British actor Clive Standen, who most recently appeared [as Gawain] in Starz’s short-lived Camelot, has let slip on Twitter that he has heard the names of three actors that will be added to the Game of Thrones cast for season two. He calls the news “massive” and reveals that one of the 3 appeared with him on Camelot, while another appeared in some other Arthurian film or TV show.

Could he be hinting at fellow Camelot alums James Purefoy (for Mance Rayder or Stannis) or Eva Green (as Melisandre)?
The second tweet sounds like he could be referring to Merlin that recently wrapped filming Season Four. Of course there are MANY Camelot/Arthurian movies and series in the recent past he could mean. Any opinions or good casting ideas? Sound off.
Bring on Purefoy. He already said it would be interesting and confessed his love to HBO.

Clive Owen, Ioan Grufford, Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, Ray Winstone, Ray Stevenson and Stellan Skarsgard were all in King Arthur alone and many would be great in a few of the empty roles in GoT.
I'm thinking maybe Joel Edgerton or Hugh Dancy, who where in the movie Arthur, and I'm also thinking Stellan Skarsgard as Mance Ryder, and Claire Forlani seems fine for one of the women roles...I though Joseph Fiennes as Stannis too...Mads Mikkelsen would be awsome as Davos

ReplyDeletePart of me wonders if Clive himself was cast and that is why he knows a few casting bits. He could be the one from Camelot on Starz and then may have seen a tentative filming schedule and recognized a name or two.....
ReplyDeleteI don't think they're planning to bring big names, I mean Sean Bean was a pretty big name, but he's more like a character-actor and it makes sense that the creators looked for actors more on Bean's range instead of commercialy succesfull actors
ReplyDeleteYou rarely see actors from Rome these days and that's a pity. Kerry Kondon will be on Luck, but apart from her I'd really like to see Tobias Menzies, Ray Stevenson, Polly Walker or Max Pirkis on scrren again. They are all British, so at least some of them could definitely join GoT...
ReplyDeleteClive Standen not Owen... so he wouldn't be a big name, but I agree with you. I think they are better toff with talented character actors and journeymen actors with range than a name.

ReplyDeleteFiennes? Ever since FlashGorward I'm a bit reserved about him. I liked the rumour of Gerard Butler as Stannis, but I doubt he will do a TV show. Same thing applies to Clive Owen. I remember Skarsgard saying in a recent interview that currently he has too much going on to be on TV. Ray Stevenson would be awesome and he just finished his work on The Three Musketeers.

ReplyDeleteI don;t really want Fiennes but I will admit that everything I hate about him works perfectly for the role of Stannis. I find him one note and boring as an actor... in FlashForward and in Camelot, but that is kinda perfect for Stannis. I don;t want it but I can see it I guess.

ReplyDeletePolly Walker generally plays ridiculously unlikable characters, so I've grown accustomed to cringing every time she comes on screen. No fault of her own of course... She just does such a good job at being unbearably unpleasant.

Agreed about Fiennes... It's just that, as much as he would work for Stannis, I'd always be thinking about Flashforward. I still haven't been able to make myself watch Camelot BECAUSE of him. I mean, I don't think he was awful on FF... I just much preferred John Cho, Dominic Monaghan, and Jack Davenport.

ReplyDeleteAhem. I started watching Coupling with family friends when I was 12. I must have seen the pilot at LEAST 20 odd times (showing it to friends for the first time). Season 4 was awful, but the first three seasons were some of the best comedy I have ever ever seen. It was probably my love of Coupling that lead me to automatically say Davenport was great. He's one of the reasons (besides the buzz) that I'm looking forward to Smash.
He so has the look and "feel" to him! I never really pictured Roose in detail and then it hit me... Colm in a dark long wig to match the hair description... YIKES! T'was perfect!

ReplyDeleteThat's my problem with her more than her terrible performance in Camelot (I blame the writers for that more so).
ReplyDeleteShe feels too young to me to play Melisandre and she feels too old to play Jeyne Westerling. I can't really think of another femme fatale or even just a "beauty" role in the next book/season.
She could surprise me as Mel maybe, but IF I had to pick one actress from Camelot for the role it would be Claire Forlani I think.

ReplyDeleteGreen was great in Camelot. She did absolutely everything she possibly could with material that was obviously lacking and direction that was less than sophisticated.
ReplyDeleteI can't handle e-readers. I love holding and smelling books. I spend a LOT of time reading articles on my blackberry... turning a book into the same experience would sadden me. I love being able to flip to the cover to check out the maps (for example). Book 5 seems to have one of the most detailed maps yet!

ReplyDeleteI think the stink of that series writing and directing ruined almost every performance given. I only watched 4 or 5 episodes before I couldn't stand anymore though.
The only one I actually "enjoyed" was Purefoy I guess. The actor whose name escapes me that played Arthur's surrogate father was pretty good too.
I'm hoping some nice versions of the maps turn up online. They are sad on Kindle. No doubt!

ReplyDeleteJeyne is pretty easy... young and cute and you have it. They can play the character many ways depending on the actress.
Part of the problem is I'm not as familiar with UK actresses and actors as I am with US.
The only redheads that popped into my mind were Sienna Guillory and Karen Gillan from Doctor Who... Sienna may be ok, but I 'm not sure I can see her in the role.
Agrred, the first 3 seasons of Coupling might have been the best comedy ever, it was just amazing. I remember it was aired after Sex And The City on German TV when I was around 17 and I instantly fell in love with it.

Yup. It's Smash. The one about a group of people putting on a musical about Marylin Monroe. I'm a fan of musicals in general, so I was interested in seeing a serious show about broadway (vs. something like Glee), but then I found out that Davenport was cast as "Derek", the choreographer for the show.

ReplyDeleteThere's a big role for the next few seasons of Stannis Baratheon. He's supposed to be large like Renyl and Robert (who were average height on the series), bald, with a beard and no personality, cold and impersonable.
It kinda sounds like the last two roles Joseph Fiennes has played.
That said, I haven't enjoyed Joseph in his last two roles and am not sure h fits in the already STELLAR cast of Game of Thrones despite his reputation as good actor.....

Mance Rayder doesn't appear in book 2. he's talked about more but he doesn't actually appear. so i think you can safely exclude him. i could be wrong because they don't strictly follow the books-they've already said that Jaime will appear a lot more in season 2 than he did in book 2, because he was literally non-existant in book 2. so i could be wrong but i dont think so.

ReplyDeleteMy thought is that when they beef up the non-POV roles they may add in in some of the characters I have descriptions and pictures for.
I'm just not sure what they will do with The Iron Islands and beyond the wall honestly. Much like the made Theon, Littlefinger and Renly a larger part in Season One than in the books.
No I haven't read them (yet). I know there's plenty of characters yet to be introduced. I admittedly liked him in Camelot, but before that I've not seen him in anything since Enemy at the Gates.

I don´t think Joseph Fiennes fits the part. But he is a big actor and they might go for him as Stannis. I´m so bored with him, so I really really hope they find somebody else more fitting.
