Game of Thrones - First Season Visual Effects Breakdowns

27 Jul 2011

Here we have the Season 1 VFX breakdowns from Blue Bolt. Basically, it's a "before and after" video of the scenes where visual effects were used. Very interesting to see how the field of vision was expanded with FX or the FX were merged into the film footage! Some of the best VFX I have seen on a TV series. Kudos Blue Bolt!

BlueBolt were the lead vendor on HBO’s sprawling fantasy series, completing around 300 shots with photo-real CG environments and CG dragons.

Lucy Ainsworth-Taylor took on the role of Lead VFX Producer for HBO.

Angela Barson was the 2nd Lead VFX Supervisor for HBO as well as the overall supervisor for BlueBolt.

  1. Nice video.. too bad there was no soundtrack dubbed over the footage. Some of those transitions are just shocking and I would have never expected there to be that amount of VFX used in the scene!

    Incredible stuff!!

  2. Great accomplishment. And I probably was standing right or near the spot where they used Valletta as reference for the King's Landing wide-shot when I visited Malta in last fall. :)

  4. Game of Thrones is definitely a 12-hour movie airing on television.

  5. Apparently in Westeros, buildings simply appear out of thin air quite often.
That was shocking to see all these buildings you'd expect just to be there in the background but really aren't. o.o

  6. Last year I was unaware of the book and TV series, so I didn't looked out if they were shooting on Malta at the time. Watching the series though I spotted places like the entrance to Medina which was used as entrance/exit for King's Landing when Ned arrived or Catelyn left. And of course the stunning cliffs plus the Dothraki wedding location with the Azure Window in the background.

  8. There is another VFX Breakdown video I saw on westeros.org. Lots of violent stuff, and cut to great music.
