TNT Orders Second Wave of Falling Skies, Cable’s #1 New Series
Epic Series from DreamWorks Television and Executive Producer Steven Spielberg, Starring Noah Wyle, Scores as Major Hit in U.S. and Abroad
TNT has renewed Falling Skies, cable’s #1 new series, for a second season. The epic saga about the aftermath of an all-out invasion by an alien military force has been a tremendous hit both domestically and internationally. Falling Skies, which airs Sundays at 10 p.m. (ET/PT), stars Noah Wyle and comes to TNT from DreamWorks Television and executive producer Steven Spielberg. TNT has ordered 10 episodes for the second season, which is slated to air in summer 2012.

“Falling Skies is a true standout series, from its ambitious storytelling, high-profile cast and production team to its phenomenal success when it comes to international and time-shifted viewing,” said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). “We’re reaching new audiences with Falling Skies and look forward to seeing where this fascinating and exciting series takes us next.”

Falling Skies takes place in the chaotic aftermath of an alien attack that has left most of the world completely incapacitated. Tom Mason (Wyle), a Boston history professor and the father of three sons, must put his extensive knowledge of military history to the test as second in command of a regiment of resistance fighters protecting a large group of civilian survivors. Falling Skies also stars Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton and Drew Roy.

Falling Skies premiered in the U.S. on TNT Sunday, June 19, drawing an extraordinary Live + 7 audience of 8 million viewers and ranking it as cable’s top series launch of 2011. The premiere also garnered an impressive 3.8 million adults 18-49 and 4.5 million adults 25-54. Through its first three installments, Falling Skies has averaged more than 6.4 million viewers through a blend of live and time-shifted viewing.

Falling Skies is quickly becoming a global television sensation. In the opening stages of its rollout in more than 75 international markets, it has already drawn strong – and in some cases record – audience deliveries for networks airing it in the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela.

In addition to Spielberg, the first season of Falling Skies has been executive-produced by DreamWorks Television heads Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank, Graham Yost and screenwriter Robert Rodat, who wrote the pilot from an idea he co-conceived with Spielberg. Mark Verheiden and Greg Beeman have served as co-executive producers.

  5. Same thing here. It seems to be keeping a steady viewer base though so maybe it did improve.

  7. Interesting that it's been renewed already.  I'm enjoying it and so far it's better than other new shows I've tried but not interesting enough to take the place of a show I already watch.  They need to ratchet up the action and lessen the military vs civilian plot to really take off in my book.  If they do succeed in gettting Ben this Sunday, it will go a long way in my faith in the overall plot.  If they don't, I'm going to be looking for dragging plot lines in all subsequent episodes.

  8. Can't agree more.  Get Ben, get out, and move the overall story along.  Why did the aliens choose earth?  Why do they need slaves to harvest scrap metal?  What makes the mech tick?  What do the aliens eat?  How close are they to humans in communication and thought?  There are a lot of good ways to go with this story.  They just need to choose plots that are most interesting and Ben is not.  Neither is the commander vs the doctor, although they mitigated that one a bit last episode.  I hope it continues.  Mostly though they need to pick up the pace.

  10. I'm not too surprised.
It has had good, consistent ratings for TNT and the series has a long post-production time so the sooner they get Season Two going, the better it is for TNT.

Personally, I'm not sold on the series yet. Something is msising for me, but I still can;t put my finger on an exact cause...

  11. I'm okay with this.  Falling Skies isn't the best by any means but it's good entertainment.

  12. That's how I fell....
Falling Skies is good, solid science fiction TV. That's uncommon enough these days, plus sometimes a methodical, solid build in the first half of the season will lead to an incredible back half of the season pay-off! I have hopes.

  13. Alright, I may give this show another chance!

  14. Ha!
Waiting to see if it gets renewed before fully investing yourself? I do that for those shows I'm on the fence with....

  15. Yep you said it. I like the show but only in a casual "while I'm doing other things" sorta way. So far it hasn't captured my full attention, but this is good news, and maybe it'll pick up for me too now that it has a little more wiggle room.

  16. I'm also good with this and I do like the show, but feel that they need to do some tightening up, as some of the acting performances have been lacking and I am waiting for the writing to step it up. I'll keep it in my queue for now.

  20. I'm a huge Noah Wyle fan from ER but I don't quite get the series...
I don't know.. maybe it's not my cup of tea. Some charchters are like cartoons - like general dickhead.
The fact that Tom has 3 grown sons is kind of wired -He just doesn't look old enough.. even with the beard (and I love the beard. I do. )

let's just say this - I'm going to keep on watching just because Noah Wyle is in it, not because of the plot, or the quality of show.

    Shallow - shallow me.

  21. I've not had the chance to watch the fourth episode yet, and the fifth's on very soon! haha.

I have really enjoyed what I've seen so far, and it's definitely one of my must watch shows this summer.
