Your Emmy Picks 2011: Lead Actor & Actress in a Drama Series

Jun 17, 2011

The Emmy nominations will be presented by Joshua Jackson (Fringe) and Melissa McCarthy (Mike & Molly) on July 14th. So I thought we'd post a series of polls to see who you'd like to see being nominated.

Today we kick off with two of the most popular categories: Lead Actor & Actress in a Drama Series. You can choose up to six people in each category.
Sound off below in the comments after you've voted.

For comparison here are last year's nominees:

Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) – Winner (can't compete this year)
Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
Hugh Laurie (House)
Matthew Fox (Lost)
Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)

Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) – Winner
Glenn Close (Damages)
Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)
Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU)
Juliana Margulies (The Good Wife)
January Jones (Mad Men)

  1. As always I believe that Thomas Gibson of Criminal Minds should be nominated for an emmy.  Although this season was weak for him, he was still the finest actor on the show and in my opinion on television.  I believe that he should be nominated.

  2. Hugh Laurie so high up is kinda sad, because of how bad this season was. His acting this year was kinda irritating and kinda booring to, seen before you know. The Emmy does not give prices for what people did when i came to acting years ago.

I would also vote for Andrew Lincoln for the Pilot of The Walking Dead, that was great acting. One of the best i have seen this year with Sean Bean for Game of Thrones also. So i would far more vote for them two than Buchemi, William H Macy, Olyplant, and Charlie Hunham(who i also want to see in the male lead category).

I would also not vote for Jon Hamm, because i think someone else should get nominated this year, i would tough vote for Mad Men to be the best drama series with Boardwalk Empire, Sons of Anarchy, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.

    Lead male:
    Andrew Lincoln
    Sean Bean
    Timothy Olyplant
    Charlie Hunham
    William H Macy

    Lead female:
    Lena Headey (Game of Thrones)
    Katey Segal
    Jennifer Beals (The Chicago Code)
    Mireille Enos(The Killing)
    Emmy Rossum(Shameless US)

  3. I voted for Michael C. Hall. He's been ignored long enough. Although Jon Hamm also deserves something for the 4th season of Mad Men was better than ever.

I also voted for Anna Torv. Second place was Julianna Margulies. Both have the ability to just blow me away with the slightest glance. Incredible acting all around!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Jon Hamm never wins the Best Actor, but Mad Men has always won best drama. (While this season is miles better than the already incredible first 3 seasons) I want someone else to win. Of course Fringe is out of the picture for that, but The Good Wife had my jaw dropping all season. Incredible television.

    ReplyDelete
  5. This contra - Sean Bean, Andrew Lincoln, Jon Hamm, William H. Macy, Charlie Hunam, Steve Buscemi. What planet are you from?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I hope at least Fringe will get nom for Peter Noble, it`s about time he had some recondition for that role.

Yeah, i forgot also that Jon Hamm haven't got an Emmy yet, i must have mixed it with some other award. Yeah, seasong 4 of Mad Man was pure gold.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Mark Harmon of course but then Tom Selleck is the man! Gahhh I chose Mark Harmon, it's about time someone from NCIS won something!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Why can't Bryan Cranston compete this year?  Is it because of when the show is airing?

Also, are any of the Game of Thrones actors eligible?  I know Tyrion the Imp is pretty freaking amazing in that show!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yes, Breaking Bad is airing too late to be nominated, sadly.

And yes, I think GoT is eligible.

    ReplyDelete
  10. John Noble for Fringe. I never understand why he's listed as supporting actor. He's a lead! Now Lance Reddick as Broyles is a supporting role as he has less scenes/less focus, but John is not. And of course I voted Anna Torv.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Probably Boardwalk Empire will win the prize for drama, even though Mad Men deserves it more.

    ReplyDelete
  12. He submitted himself as a supporting actor ;)

    ReplyDelete
  13. For actor my picks are:
    Holt McCallany
    Steve Buscemi
    Michael C. Hall
    Jon Hamm (hoping he'll win)
    Timothy Olypant
Sean Bean (not on the poll)

I also wouldn't mind having William H Macy in there.

    For actress:
    Mireille Enos
    Katey Sagal
    Julianna Marguiles
Amy Ryan (not on the poll, hoping she'll win, though I'm not sure if she counts as lead or as supporting)
Elizabeth Moss (not on the poll)
    Emmy Rossum

    ReplyDelete
  14. Mariska Hargitay should get another nomination.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Other: Either Joshua Jackson or John Noble of Fringe. :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Michael C Hall or Jon Hamm for lead actor, and Anna Torv, Anna Paquin or Emmy Rossum for lead actress. And if the GoT cast are eligible, then I think several of them are more than deserving of an award.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sean Bean - Game of Thrones
Bryan Cranston - Breaking BadTimothy Olyphant - JustifiedMichael C Hall - DexterCharlie Hunman - Sons of AnarchySteve Buscemi - Boardwalk EmpireKatey Sagal - Sons of AnarchyMirielle Enos - The KillingLena HEadey - Game of ThronesKathy Bates - Harry's LawAnna Torv - Fringe
    Anna Paquin - True Blood

Sean Bean should be on everyone's list for Best Lead Actor I think....

    ReplyDelete
  18. Bryan Cranston can't be nominated this year, otherwise he would have won this year too.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Agree about Rosum and Hunman.... I will be happy if they're nominated but it would rock if they win! Same with Anna Torv... Not impressive to me and I love FRINGE.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ahhh ok... that 'splains it...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think Game of Thrones has the same buzz and momentum as
Boardwalk did Last year. I wouldn't be shocked if it wins since it is some serious heavy- gritty drama.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes, they are. There are about 10 actors submitted for the performer-category's for behalf of Game of Thrones. Lena Heady(Cersei) and Sean Bean(Ned) for the lead actor/actress.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think he has a good chance to be nominated as supporting actor, no chance to win, though.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah, but i would love to see him actually getting nominated for once.

    ReplyDelete
  25.  Oh ok :) I didn't realise

    ReplyDelete
  26. I approve of that list, but I'd have Ray Romano nominated. Well, and Jon Hamm who you also didn't nominate. Possibly instead of Macy and Buscemi, because I don't watch their shows. Sean Bean would be an additional option too.
Only thing I'd change about your female nom list would be Mireille Enos instead of Anna Paquin, because Paquin's acting on True Blood doesn't really impress me a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You'd nominate Heady? I thought you weren't at all with her.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I loathe it .... but I think the show is deserving of pretty much every category being nominated. XD

A lot of people like her and how they changed her from  the books....

    ReplyDelete
  29. this poll wont be an acurate result of who wins an emmy because ppl on here vote for their favourite tv show, not the best actor/actress....anna torv lol she wont ever be nominated for fringe..

    ReplyDelete
  30. So? I guess everyone is aware that this poll doesn't actually mean anything.
Doesn't mean people can't have som fun.

    ReplyDelete
  31. well, from those above I picked the ones I know and think they deserve it. Hugh Laurie (although I didn't watch this season...), Simon Baker and Mark Harmon. Also picked 'other', I think Sean Bean or Peter Dinklage deserve a nomination! and also Nathan Fillion :) and for women, I picked Emily Deschanel, Julianna Margulies and Anna Torv. and for 'other' I would put there ...Stana Katic? Better than for example, Anna Paquin... I don't like her at all... :(

    ReplyDelete
  32. So is Joshua Jackson. Joshua is a fantastic actor, but he is going to announce the nominations. I suppose that takes him out of the picture, but there is still hope for John Noble.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think the most GoT could aim to is to get nominated for Best Drama. Beyond that is really hard.

    ReplyDelete
  34.  Sean Bean.. I would have definitely nominated Peter Dinklage (sadly he won't pass for a lead actor)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Male Lead:  I voted for Olyphant, M.C. Hall, Buscemi, and "Other"
The other three I'd want on the ballot would be Joel Kinnaman (The Killing), James Badge Dale (Rubicon), and Jason Clarke (The Chicago Code)

Female Lead:  I voted for Enos, Torv, Margulies, Rossum, Beals, and "Other"
The other nominee on my ballot would be Eva Green (Camelot)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, I just don't see how you couldn't be impressed with Anna T... O.o
I loved Shameless mostly because of Emmy Rossum but she still didn't impress me as much as Anna... Hmmm
I know that Julianna does a helluva job on TGW and would love to see her win :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. No no no no no no, I seriously disagree.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lead Actress in a Drama Series >> Robin Tunney (The Mentalist)
She is a damn great actress ! It's too bad she is underestimated...

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think Dinklage has a shot as best supporting actor.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Kinnaman is terrific on The Killing, but I rather see him as supporting actor and not actually as lead.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think Anna is good, but not in the same league as some of the others and doesn't have the critics as much as others (fair or not). I wouldn't be upset if she got nominated... I just don't expect it I guess.  I added Anna Paquin more out of past awards and critical acclaim than personal like honestly. Emma too.

Juliana Margolis is phenomenal from what I hear... I just have some sort of allergy to her. I can't watch anything she's in... I've tried. At least I realize she's good even if I personally can't watch her.... or vote for her.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Mark Harmon for the actor :)
But as I couldn't choose between Emily Deschanel and Anna Torv, I voted for both lol =)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I had the same thought but I think that the supporting category will be much tougher than lead this year.  That's why I put him with the lead actors.

    ReplyDelete
  44. That's going to be a tough category, no question. But with Aaron Paul not being eligible, I think he might get nominated. I kind of see Holder as a good guy version of Jesse Pinkman.
And thanks for reminding me of James Badge Dale, almost forgot about him, already seems so long ago that Rubicon was cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I agree but Robin can't be nominated for lead actress. She submitted for supporting actress so that's be the category to vote for us ;).

    ReplyDelete
  46. Rubicon was such a great series.  Arliss Howard (Kale Ingram) definitely deserves a supporting actor nod for his creepy performance.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think he's nominated for sure and could win it ... a serious contender. I bet GoT will get a lot of nominations, but I doubt they will more than a couple Emmy awards. Golden Globes add in Best Ensemble and the technical awards where they will be STRONG.

    I wouldn't be surprised by...
    -Best Actor, Drama (Sean Bean)
-Best Supporting Actor, Drama (Peter Dinklage and/or Marc Addy)
-Best Directing, Drama(Timothy Van Patten and/or  AlanTaylor)
    -Best Writing, Drama (D&D)
    -Outstanding Drama Series

    ReplyDelete
  48. Genre shows are notorious for being slighted when awards season rolls around.  Don't be too disappointed if you don't see a lot of nominations for Thrones.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Lead Male:
    Joel Kinnamen - The Killing
    Brent Sexton - The Killing
Timothy Olyphant - JustifiedMichael C Hall - DexterCharlie Hunman - Sons of AnarchySteve Buscemi - Boardwalk Empire
    Jon Hamm - Mad Men

    Lead Female:
    Mirielle Enos - The Killing
Juliana Margulies - The Good Wife

I love The Killing so I'm really pushing for that. Amazing show.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Simon Baker and Anna Torv are among the most standout performances this year. Simon Baker brought Patrick Jane to new levels (especially in the amazing season finale), while Anna Torv stepped up her game and played THREE distinct characters.

    ReplyDelete
  51. william h macy needs to win!!!! he's amazing on shameless!
anna torv is my pick for female, although julianna margulies is a serious contender.

    ReplyDelete
  52. where is misha collins for his castiel character on spn?...where is sean bean for "games of trones"? where is matthew gubler of "crinimal minds"? where is lisa edelstein of "dr house"? where is mariska hargitay of "special unit"? must i continue the list? that will be cool to see some new name on the list and not only the most "popular" in the audience stuff but in the heart of the viewers and the fans that will be great.....isn't it , for one

    ReplyDelete
  53. Initially I only expected technical award nominations and maybe a nod for Dinklage, but my gut tells me they will get more than now.

I think it has the buzz at the right time , much like The King's Speech did at The Oscars. Not the same show or the same momentum obviously, but I think Game of Thrones hit its stride, peaked and will have its finale at just the right time to have the most impact.

    ReplyDelete
  54. And... Rubicon deserved a second season.... Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The only two genre projects in the last two decades to get serious awards consideration in the last two decades were The X-Files and LOTR Return of the King.  I remain skeptical.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Lauren Graham! She deserves this so much!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Edelstein is supporting actress and CW shows will never get any Emmy nominations

    ReplyDelete
  58. Guys: Charlie Hunnam, William H Macy and Jon Hamm.Women: Emmy Rossum, Katey SagalHow Kyra Sedwick won last year is still a mystery to me...that woman has alwys the same expression of her face.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Agreed. Charlie SOOOOO deserves being nominated and anyone who watched Sons of Anarchy this season would agree on that!

    ReplyDelete
  60. People need to stop voting for actors/ actresses because they like them, how about looking at their acting skills for once ???

    ReplyDelete
  61. I voted both Mark Harmon and Tom Selleck. Both great actors, and both starring on 2 great shows. NCIS is one of the best drama shows on TV, in large part due to Mark Harmon's presence, and influence. If he'd leave the show, they might as well cancel it. No offense to the rest of the cast, but 'Gibbs' effectively makes the show what it is.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Agreed on Mark Harmon. He basically makes NCIS what it is today. No Gibbs, no show :P

    ReplyDelete
  63. Shouldn't Chris Noth be considered a supporting actor, as he's only in about half the Good Wife episodes? I voted for Baker and Harmon; would have included Natahan Fillion and Donal Logue.

For the ladies: Baker, Beals Delaney, Deschenel, Marguilles and Perabo.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yeah I meant no possibility for a outstanding drama award. I think they can easily win some of the technical awards.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Michael C. Hall from Dexter and Lauren Graham from Parenthood gets my votes!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hugh Laurie is the best. He's a great actor and a sexy man.  He must win!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I wouldn't be shocked if they only got a couple technical nominations honestly.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I hate that Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic aren't on these lists.  My vote goes to both of them.

    ReplyDelete
  69. There is only one Lead Actress in my book: Anna Torv. No one else has done what she did.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Robert Carlyle-Stargate Universe

    ReplyDelete
  71. He really grew on me. Didn't really like him a lot during the first season, because sometimes I had the feeling he was over-acting. But he continuously got better.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Sorry, but then you clearly haven't seen anything else.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I would nominate Stana Katic as well!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Lead Actor in a Drama Series--Chris Meloni (SVU). He has done great work for so long, yet he has been continually ignored.

Hmm....No Mariska Hargitay (SVU) nomination this year, very curious

    ReplyDelete
  75. Cote de Pablo and Pauley Perrette, both so good!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I've seen a few others but I'm sticking with my opinion. Take it or leave it :)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Right on. She's the one.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I also think Game of Thrones is an infinitely better show than Boardwalk Empire, but that might just be my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I totally agree, Anna Torv isn't even in the same league as Anna Paquin. I find her portrayal of Sookie extremely annoying, and I love Sookie in the books.
I used to not find Anna Torv particularly impressive, but this season she completely blew my mind. The differences between the two Olivia's are so subtle and unique, and when they circled each other at the end if this year's finale, sizing each other up, the chemistry was incredible! AND THEN YOU REMEMBER THEY'RE BOTH ANNA TORV AND OMFG. With all the things there are to look forward to when Fringe returns, I find that one of the things I'm most excited for are the two Olivia's having scenes together. That she can play two (really like 5) different characters at the same time and pull it off as emotionally impactive as she did is pretty impressive. This was, for most viewers, Fringe's best season so far, and that it was 90% Anna Torv should speak volumes.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I don't think anyone expects it to be accurate. It's just a fun way to get the discussion going.
I agree that it's highly unlikely that Torv will get a nomination, but I hardly think that's because she is unworthy. Paquin gets nominated (even though she's kind of grating, and hardly someone I would consider an Emmy deserving actress) because she's an American actress on a show that is very popular in America and she's a major red carpet walker. True Blood itself is highly over-rated in my opinion, but it gets recognized thanks to usually kickass Alan Ball.
And now I'm thinking about White Walkers after typing red carpet walker and how ridiculously under-recognized the fantasy genre is during award season.

    ReplyDelete
  81. NINA DOBREV for LEAD ACTRESS

    ReplyDelete
  82. ANNA TORV - ALL THE AWARDS! :D

    ReplyDelete
  83. Are you really talking about Anna Torv from Fringe ? .. is there any other Anna Torv out there which you are seeing her by that way .. maybe an alternate Anna Torv ?

The only thing that Anna doesn't have is that she is not American , her skill in acting isn't determent by sexy face or voice , Anna didn't fail in any scenes she acted and was honestly delivering the true emotions and feelings of the character whether it was Olivia / AltOlivia /Bellivia , and she was amazing since S1 not from S3 .

    ReplyDelete
  84. Can you define for me the Worthy Actor/actress in your opinion ? other than he/she must be American or Canadian .

If Anna doesn't get an emmys this year .. totally the emmys are biased and there is some little group behind that .

    ReplyDelete
  85. Simon Baker deserves at least a nomination. He did an awesome job this The mentalist season about all on that breath taking finale...(and I'm not saying that just because i'm fan of the show. It's just the truth)

    ReplyDelete
  86. Lisa Edelstein (House) was outstanding this year and had a lot of screen time. She deserves recognition.

    ReplyDelete
  87. why cant Bryan Cranston compete this year?

    ReplyDelete
  88. definitely vote for MH on the actor side...

    ReplyDelete
  89. I love Chris Noth but I don't consider him the Lead Actor on The Good Wife. He's around for about half a season, and I am pretty sure he submitted himself for supporting alongside Josh Charles and Alan Cumming, particularly seeing as those two are in the show much more frequently.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Emily Deschanel of Bones needs to get recognized. it feels like it's long overdue. for people who don't watch bones but are interested in seeing how good she acts, i suggest you watch episode 9 of season 6 (S06 E09) The Doctor in the Photo, and episode 22 also from season 6 (S06 E22) The Hole in the Heart

    ReplyDelete
  91. Lead Actress in a Drama : Stana Katic ( Castle), Emily Deschanel ( Bones), Paget Brewster ( Criminal Minds), Kyra Sedgewick ( The Closer), Kim Delany ( Army Wives), Brigid Brannagh ( Army Wives) All these women are awesome and talented and should be recognized instead of having the same people every year, especially stana katic, she is inspirational and just amazing!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  92. While Castle does have spotlighted "Look at me, I'm acting!" episodes like House of Blue Bloods does, I think Nathan Fillion is the center around which the show spins.  Replace Tom Selleck with another ponderous actor and Blue Bloods goes on.  Not Castle.

Why is Chris Noth on the Lead Actor's list?  He's a recurring character and was in less than half of this season's episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Hugh Laurie should have got an Emmy for the first seasons of House but the last two have been so bad, other than in Very Special Episodes like the mental hospital one, even  he looks like he's bored with the show.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I definitely agree that Kyra Sedgewick and Stana Katic should be on that list, more than Kathy Bates and Dana Delany, both of whom had only half seasons of their shows this year.

Sedgewick won the Emmy last year (I think).  Stana Katic turns in beautifully understated performances that you often have to watch twice before you can get all the nuances.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Yo gregorylkelly, need to ask you something bb related. add me up. 2101E47A

    ReplyDelete
  96. where is Nathan Fillion in any of this??? he should soooo be nominated & then of course win the emmy :P

    ReplyDelete
  97. Lead Actor- Jensen Ackles Supernatural

    ReplyDelete
  98. And so was Hugh Laurie. He is one of the greatest actors I've ever seen. Yes LE was great and it was her last season as Cuddy, so...

    ReplyDelete
  99. But Laurie is a great, great actor. I believe there is no one better.

    ReplyDelete
  100. After six seasons Jensen Ackles should finally get recognition

    ReplyDelete
  101. Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) For six seasons Jensen has consistently done  unbelievable work  It's time for Jensen to get his dues

    ReplyDelete
  102. I love for this to happen right along with you but there's a better chance of California becoming an island than Jensen being recognized.  (big sigh)

    ReplyDelete
  103. Anna and Emily are my favorite! :))

    ReplyDelete
  104. No-one deserves it as much as Anna Torv.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I'm hoping mark harmon wins an Emmy this year!!! The last two seasons of ncis was strong for him and he deserves an Emmy nod!!!! Ncis should be nominated too but I'm also glad that tom selleck is on the ballot too!!! With mark and tom those too are a force to be reckon with!!!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Lead male: Jensen Ackles in Supernatural.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Kyle Chandler — Friday Night Lights.
    Steve Buscemi — Boardwalk Empire.
Charlie Hunnam — Sons of Anarchy.
    William H. Macy — Shameless.
    Timothy Olyphant — Justified.
    Michael C. Hall — Dexter.

Jennifer Beals — The Chicago Code.
Julianna Margulies — The Good Wife.
Connie Britton — Friday Night Lights.
Katey Sagal — Sons of Anarchy.
    Emmy Rossum — Shameless.
    Anna Paquin — True Blood.

I'm sorry, I love Fringe and I hope they'll have noms for best drama and best supporting actor (John Noble) but Anna Torv never really impressed me with her acting skills. Yes, she's sexy and has a very sexy voice, but that's not enough compared to the other 6 actresses.

It would be pretty amazing if Charlie Hunnam and Emmy Rossum won. They're young, but they were outstanding in SoA and Shameless. But somehow I don't think they'll even have nominations.

Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment), Sean Bean (GoT) and Jeremy Irons (The Borgias) could (and should) get nominated, imo. I would give Jason Clarke (The Chicago Code) a nomination as well (but TCC being cancelled (damn), I don't think that will happen).

As for actresses, Holliday Grainger (The Borgias) is wonderful as well, she enlightens most scenes. I knew Jeremy Irons was awesome but she is a breakthrough. She probably won't be considered as a lead actress unfortunately. Julia Stiles (Dexter) deserves one too, but I guess she'll be listed as a guest-star - she was credited as a special guest-star throughout the 5th season, like Jimmy Smits in season 3 and John Lithgrow in season 4 (Lithgrow won that Emmy, and rightfully so).

    ReplyDelete
  108. Same here. Thomas Gibson Criminal Minds is over due !

    ReplyDelete
  109. She does the role perfect according to the book, she an good actor that can play a baddie like Cersei in a good way without doing the part to much, if you catch my drift. One may not like her character, but she can be a good actor for one even tough he hates the character.
