The Boondock Saints, one of the greatest cult classics around. Although it was only shown in five theatres for one week when it was originally released, the film has gone on to spawn a sequel and has gained a massive following, making it a bonafide cult classic.
Tomorrow the film is receiving a Blu-Ray re-release (our review is coming soon) and I had the chance to sit down with director Troy Duffy for an interview (full interview coming soon). While speaking about the film, I asked him whether a Boondock Saints 3 was on the cards. Turns out it is, but not in the format we were expecting.
Duffy told me that he actually has plans to continue on the story of the MacManus brothers but not on the big screen. Instead, he’s in talks with TV execs to bring the story of the Irish vigilantes to television. He told me that it would be a faithful adaptation meaning that a network like HBO or AMC would be hosting it, allowing Duffy to portray the violence and language that fans have come to expect. He also told me that stars Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery are interested in participating.
While nothing is confirmed, Duffy seemed pretty confident that it’s going to happen. I asked him about a film as well although he seemed less sure of that. After all, it’s much harder to get a feature film made, especially these days. Here’s what Troy Duffy had to say:
“We’ve been approached to do a possible Boondock Saints TV series. So the fans may be getting a part 3 as a television show. We might be able to pull that off….I actually called both Sean and Norman and they both said “hell yeah, we’ll drop everything.”
I then asked him for confirmation that it would indeed be on a network like HBO or AMC and he said, ”that is correct.”

I'm having mixed feelings about this. I absolutely loved the first one, it was such a great movie, it is and always will be one of my favourite movies. Damn, because I loved the theme song so much I even learned to play the tin whistle.
ReplyDeleteThe second one was fun, but definitely not as good as the original one. I would have prefered just one movie to be honest. And even though after part 2 I was open for a third one, I'm not sure I like the idea of a TV show. Plus it would possibly mean to get rid of Daryl on The Walking Dead.
On the other hand a Boondock Saints show on a network like AMC or HBO does in fact sound a bit tempting. I'm torn on this issue...
Agreed completely! Loved the first movie, haven't seen the second yet, but AMC or HBO would be awesome. Also, if it's AMC, he could move between shows. Even then, they probably wouldn't film at the same time.
ReplyDeleteI agree that on a network like AMC and HBO it could work but I really like the character of Daryl on The Walking Dead and another show would possibly mean getting rid of him. Still I'm probably one of the few that really enjoyed the 2nd one and I'd much rather see a 3rd one at least before we consider a show.
ReplyDeleteI definitely enjoyed All Saints Day, but as I said, the first movie is one of my all-time-favs and it's pretty hard to live up to that standard. But after the second one I even wanted a third one. If Duffy can pull it off and make a TV show instead, I'm fine with that too, although I'd prefer a movie. But I will watch whatever they come up with anyway.
