I don't really think there's much to the argument, but they basically feel Gwen and Rose were his "Mary Sue" characters who never had the same consequences or tragedies that he put his other characters through.
Mostly, I think people weirdly got attached to Ianto (never saw the appeal) and just wanted to lash out when RTD killed him.
Even if Gwen and Rose didn't suffer the same consequences (and I'm not claiming that to be true), what's the big deal? Since when did everyone start suffering equally in this world, you know? The saying "life ain't fair" exists for a reason. :)
I never got attached to Ianto either and I feel the same way about the subsequent fan reaction as you.
I don't see it as favoring. It's all character development, and she is the female lead. Every show does that. She is the hero, but not the tragic hero, that's Jack. Her character development is suppose to be more human and genuine than the others as she is the link to the real world. I was a big Ianto fan, but I do like his death for both the dramatic and emotional reasons. This response for a writer is great. A death isn't something that is suppose to be happy. People feeling so passionate about it meant they had the same appeal that the characters themselves did. Though I will miss the character, like I miss Tosh and Owen, I thought it was a wonderful piece of drama. -TOL
I liked Ianto a lot. I love three piece suits, so his style was always pretty cool in my opinion which maybe made it easy for me to also like his character.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Something happens to Gwen's family? I thought RTD would of made them cannon fodder a long time ago. He's not very easy on his characters.
ReplyDeleteOh, that's an opening I'm sure someone will take...
ReplyDeleteHe's been accused of "favoring" her like he "favored" Rose on Doctor Who.
I was speaking specifically of Torchwood. You can't expect characters to be treated the same across two completely different shows.
