Supernatural - Favorite 6th Episode - Poll

7 Jun 2011

Yesterday saw our closest contest yet with Simon Said at 29% and Monster Movie (21%) and Bloody Mary (20%) behind it. All 3 good choices in my opinion. Today's vote is different for me since 3 of the 6 episodes are on my least favorite list and one skirts very close by. It's makes voting fairly painless but not ranking. How do you rank in shades of Ugh? I hope you find these episodes more palatable. And remember, comments are the sprinkles on the ice cream sundae of life.

Choices are:

Skin
No Exit
Red Sky at Morning
Yellow Fever
I Believe the Children are Our Future
You Can't Handle the Truth

  1. Hard choice between "Skin" and "Yellow Fever" but "Skin" won my vote

  2. In my opinion, this is the worst set of episodes to vote on.  3 are on my least favorite list and 1 is very, very close.

    So from the worst:

I Believe the Children are Our Future - I believe this episode was pointless and if you think Celine Dion is bad, what's up with Whitney Houston.  Jesse, a character better off never existing on the show.

No Exit - Just slightly worse than RSaM for me because they had such a great concept in America's first serial killer and they wasted it.

Red Sky at Morning - Kripke even apologized for this one.  Enough said.  Does get points for the humor though.

Yellow Fever - I have no idea why I dislike this episode when so many other fans love it.  I found the whole thing dumb, from the plot to the jokes.

You Can't Handle the Truth - I liked the idea of Veritas even though she was way too easy to take down.  I liked that we got confirmation on RoboSam.  I hated that Dean and Lisa broke up...kind of...but then they sort of got back together....but then it was over and I was sad.

Skin - No, I do not think that skin peeling off Dean and teeth falling out is sexy.  However, I love the introduction of the shapeshifters.  It brought us great future episodes too.  I loved how we saw a side of Sam that was previously missing, ones we like to call the College Years.  I loved how evil Shapeshifter Dean was and his escape from the police.  Real Dean had some great lines too.  Yep, Skin is my hands-down vote this time.

  3. Loved Yellow Fever, especially because of Jensen Ackles and the little footage after the episode.

  4. "Skin" hands down. The gore, the twist on the shapeshifters (absorption of memories, etc.) and the whole episode was just awesome. It's when I first started really enjoying this show.
Second place: You Can't Handle the Truth. Another brilliant episode!
Third: Yellow Fever. I love this episode for the comedy (the Yorkie! Oh the Humanity!!!!) but It doesn't connect to me as well as the first 2.
4th:I Believe the Children... It might have been a tremendous misstep in the mythos, but the human/demon pregnancy thing was just dark and it could've been a cool one-episode arc if he was just a strangely slightly more than average child (instead of, you know...the Antichrist?)
5th: No Exit-- I loved this episode for the creep factor.
6th: Red Sky at Morning: Aside from a crush developing on the Bela character, it was just a meh episode.

  5. Easy one.. Yellow Fever!!! Thanks for put the previous winners

  6. Nothing from season 1 or 6 yet... Season 4 is going to win

    ReplyDelete
  7. This one was hard too. I went with Skin but I really love Yellow Fever too... and then You Cant Handle The Truth was a very close third. All three are really great episodes! =]

  8. I voted for "Skin", it was a great episode. You Can't Handle The Truth was a good episode too.
    The others are just ok.

I voted Yellow Fever. It is rare for me to choose a s4 ep as I hate s4, but this was one of those classic part funny, part tragic eps, in the fine tradition of Mystery Spot, that the show does so brilliantly.

Skin would be next. Great ep.

I didn't mind IBCAOF at all.

YVHTT is from the first - soulless Sam - half of s6. This is my least favourite period of the show ever (possibly apart from the end of s4) so this is low down my list. It was such a let down from the premis. I'd hoped that making everyone tell the truth would provide some great relationship moments. Instead it showed why there hadn't been any and wouldn't be any for some time to come. Hugely disappointing.

No Exit. Boring. Didnt like Jo in this ep.

RSAT. The old lady groping Sam? Nuff said.

i don't mind any of those episodes and i think there are some far worse ones to be had.
for me it came down to skin and yellow fever
skin was awesome. a shipshifter became dean and stole his car and ran around shirtless and had an epic fight with sam. and the episode starting from the end with dean and the tortured girl was exciting.
i loved yellow fever for the humour. ghost sickness making dean afraid of everything, from sleeping on the third story to running from little dogs, i loved every part of it. when dean screamed when the cat jumped out of the locker are went on the "we're crazy people" rant at sam, gosh i love this episode!!
so in the end, i voted for yellow fever. funny trumps action and awesome monste in this poll, although both showcased jensen at his finest (being comedy or shirtless :D)
my next choice was red sky at morning which i know most people hate. but, i liked bela and i loved how the boys always reacted to her being around. deans reaction when his car was missing was priceless. and we saw the brothers in tux's. to my memory thats the only time that's happened so that made it pretty special.
the last 3 are probably all tied in last place here, i qan't really think of anything specific to any episode to pull it on top of the other. except maybe the castiel action figure in IBtCaoF. that was pretty cool

i also didn't like season 4 except for a few episodes here and there. i never understood why there was so much love for it

  12. lostrocks4ever7 June 2011 at 08:04

i agree that maybe the plot of yellow fever wasn't the best, especially the way the ghost was killed, but i loved the humour of it.
and the eye of the tiger outtake at the end which will always be a part of that episode in my eyes.

i still think its funny that kripke appologised for RSaM and bugs by saying it was bad writing

  13. Red Sky at Morning is the worst episode of the whole series for me. I disliked Bela from the start but this episode made me actually and deeply hate her. I was honestly considering dropping the show if they had kept her because whenever she was in the room, the boys' IQ was dropping like a rock. After this ep, I approached every episode of S3 with caution and I have never watched any episode with Bela Talbot in it again - what a *peep*. I know that for a time, the writers boasted about how fans loved to hate her - I just hated her. It was the only time that I actively campained for a show to get rid of a character and I danced and jumped and sang when they killed her. Yes, that's how much I hated this episode and her character.

Best of these listed above? Skin, hands down.

But overall? Episodes 6 were a bad, BAD bunch.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I definitely agree that Episode 6 hasn't been one of the Supernatural writer's best slots.

My order would probably have to be:

    6. I Believe the Children are Our Future (Pretty much everything Dahne said about Jesse as a discarded plot thread)

    5. You Can't Handle the Truth (Didn't really like the way Veritas was handled)

    4. Red Sky at Morning (didn't hate it as much as other people - but I guess I have the same view regarding Bela as a character)

    3. Yellow Fever (although the Eye of the Tiger rendition was pure classic)

    2. No Exit (Enjoyed this more than most, it seems)

    1. Skin (One of my favourites from Season 1)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Does anybody see a Sam episode in this bunch? I saw a couple of nearly 50/50 episodes... but no Sam episodes IMO. Each of the other episode collections, so far, had at least 1 episode for each of the brothers... This one doesn't. Then, I checked the 7th episode and they seemed to be nearly all Sam episodes or they at least have a good part for Sam.... Hmmm, weird. Now I get to check for that pattern in Season 7.... and hopefully Season 8 and 9 and 10 :-) We can give them a break after that... maybe.

I really like Skin, Red Sky at Morning, and You Can't Handle the Truth... I kind of hate Dean not trusting Sam to the point of wanting to kill him in his sleep... but I love Sam lying even during the curse on Dean and to Veritas. When he tells Dean He has his back with that earnest look on his face poor Dean looks so confused and guilty... Then Sam turns away and all emotion drops from his face *shiver*. I love to watch that over and over and over again.

  16. Skins is amazing, but I voted for You Can't Handle the Truth, because I really like that episode

    ReplyDelete
  17. Definitely harder then yesterday. I'll go with Yellow Fever, close to Skin and No exit. Actually, I like them all. But still - Yellow Fever;)

Me neither lostrocksever. It systematically destroyed the boys relationship in a contrived, ooc way just for dramatic effect. I hated it.

exacly, up until season 4, sam and dean always shared the spot as fave. but since season 4, dean has risen to the top of my favourites list and no matter what they seem to be doing to try and fix it, i don't think they will ever share that spot again in my eyes.
too much of this show is about dean now and it has been like that for a while

    ReplyDelete
  20. I voted You Can't Handle the Truth, I believe it's one of the best episodes of season 6. Loved the tension in this epi, the gory dentist scene and the gross eating a tongue by Veritas. It was a "what's wrong with Sam" episode and I loved how it kept me wondering until the very end. RoboSam being able to lie to the Truth was awesome. Also loved the tiny Dean/Cas bit.

I loved Yellow Fever, but neither is it the best comedy SPN has done, nor an outstanding storyline. The way they defeated that ghost was actually very disturbing. I liked the appearance of little Lilith, though. I adore the Eye of the Tiger outtake, but that's exactly what it is - an outtake - and I do not consider it a part of the episode. It's all Jensen in there, not Dean.

About the rest - I do not dislike RSaM as much as everyone does. I actually really liked the Dean/Bela dynamic in this episode, their scenes together were hilarious. Skin - well, I guess I don't have it high on my list, cause I've seen too many shapeshifters in the show already, I don't value the first one that much anymore. No Exit has too much Jo in it for me to even consider it. I Believe wasn't bad, but I agree making the kid so powerful and then making him disappear was absolutely pointless.

  21. Eye of the Tiger was the best part about Yellow Fever for me.  I still watch that clip when I need a laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  22. geordiegirl19677 June 2011 at 12:59

It didn't have that effect on me. I still love Dean and Sam equally, but I think they took a huge risk with what they did to Sam's character in s4. They made Sam act in ways not consistent with his character, or with the events of the story. I feel they did this just to shake things up dramatically. Well it did that, but sucked all the enjoyment out of the show, felt contrived, and it took them a very long time - until the end of s5 - to recover from.

I don't agree the show is just about Dean now. I think it is pretty even between Sam and Dean. I think what they have forgotten about, and does need more time / attention, is the relationship between them. Genuine brotherly moments have been few and far between ever since s4, but it was particularly noticeable this season - not least because the relationship was totally absent for the first half of the season.

  23. geordiegirl19677 June 2011 at 13:02

That dentist scene was up there with the MBV eating each other scene as one of the hardest to watch in the history of the show. The locusts in the brain scene in The 3rd Man was also hard going.

i agree things didn't really start to get back to almost normal until the end of season 5. but somehow for me, dean just gradually became my favourite over sam.

i think they are again evening it up more now with season 6 but alot of these last 2 and a hlaf seasons have been about dean or seeing things from dean's perspective. his opinion of what sam was doing was wrong or his opinion of what cas was doing was wrong or his decisions and people lying to him. we only found out what was going on with sam when dean did because we were watching the story through his eyes

    ReplyDelete
  25. Voted for Yellow Fever.  Skin would have been number two.  As for YCHTT, it had some good moments, but I doubt I'm going to be voting for any episodes with RoboSam in them in these polls, with the possible exceptions of Caged Heat and AiS - depending on the competition.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The best part for me was the part at the end where Sam and Bobby partner up to save Dean.  I think that's probably the only time in the series we've ever seen Sam and Bobby work together alone the way Bobby and Dean are always working together.

    ReplyDelete
  27. While I somewhat agree with what you're saying here, I've also noticed that while a lot of the audience tends to see things from Dean's perspective, there are a lot of hints in the story that Dean's point of view isn't 100% right.  While Dean saw what was going on with Sam as a betrayal in season 4, when Sam was lying to him about the Ruby and the demon blood, the thing is, it wasn't ABOUT Dean.  Sam's lying was about him being ashamed of something inside of himself.  Dean made it about Dean.  Also, a lot of the lying was subtly balanced out.  In Lazarus Rising, Dean calls Sam and lies about what he and Bobby are up to. And then we find out Sam is lying too.  Dean lies about not remembering Hell, and then we find out that Sam is lying about what he was really up to that year.

I'm curious how the Cas thing unfolds when the show comes get back next season.  Yes, Cas was downright scary at the end, but the point about Dean's self-centeredness has been driven home by the writers this year.  First Bobby calls Dean (and Sam) out on it in WaB.  Then we see the Cas/Dean relationship play out.  There's something obviously wrong with Cas from early on (this comments about regrettable things, the kiss with Meg), but Dean never really tries to approach Cas as a friend to find out if he's in trouble.  Instead he barks orders at him and implies that Cas isn't helping him enough.  In Caged Heat, Cas makes a comment that he wishes that he could be with Dean and Sam more often, and instead of probing further to find out what's going on, Dean interprets that as an apology.  Even at the end, when Dean is making his final plea to Cas to get the souls out of him, Dean's argument is about Dean - how this all will effect Dean (that he lost Lisa, Ben, and Sam, and doesn't want to lose Cas too).

Where I'm going with this is that the way things are presented, as viewers we've more likely to see things through Dean's point of view, but I also think the writers are putting enough doubt in there that maybe we should be challenging that POV?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Except it's not technically a part of the episode. It was an outtake. I believe many people voting for Yellow Fever forget that.
Although, gotta love Jensen for delivering that ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Caged Heat will be up against Abandon All Hope and Heaven and Hell, I guess that makes it a tough competition. Samarra has IMO zero chance against Mystery Spot, even though it was a great episode.

I really loved Skin, but I went with Yellow Fever b/c its one of my top favorite episodes of the series...and it has the Eye of the Tiger bit at the end <3

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ahh, I actually really enjoy many of these episodes!
Hard to choose, but "Yellow Fever" gets my vote! Adored that episode XD
I also really like "Skin", "No Exit" and "Red Sky at Morning".. I don't know why people think those episodes are so awful xD They're not exactly the best of SPN, but I think most of the acting was great (as usual), the humor was also awesome, like usual.. Don't really think they are too bad :P

    ReplyDelete
  32. I liked "Yellow Fever" the best on this list. Yesterdays was just too close to call because I love all of those episodes!

    ReplyDelete
  33. That first one's going to be a tough call.  I'll probably go with AAH and Mystery Spot.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Skin would be my first choice .
But I cant really chose between the others episode 6 never seems to be the strongest .

    ReplyDelete
  35. It just feels like I'm so biased when it comes to this stuff, as most of my votes have been cast to episodes that are in seasons 1 and 2. I guess it shows how much I love those seasons more than the other seasons.

Anyway, I also chose "Skins". The introduction to shapeshifters was amazing, as it was almost a weird myth to think about. We always assumed they existed as entities in these myths, but to see how they were interpreted by Kripke et al was magnificent. I also loved, like you said, the college-years of Sam that I desperately wanted to see, and Dean's feelings on those things. But my favorite part of the episode has to be fake-Dean proclaiming real-Dean's feelings to Sam. And, can I just say one thing? It's a little weird that the real-Dean was out of it when the proclamation was happening, but was suddenly awake when they were rescuing each other. I'd like to think he was awake the whole time, because this was the only way he was allowed to tell Sam how he felt through that difficult time when they were both away from each other.

Anyway, an amazing episode! I kind of wish we get some of these episodes in season 7. I really, really want those subtle, brotherly moments before things became too much about TALKING ABOUT EACH AND EVERY THING, ya know?

    Thanks again for the poll!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Agreed which tells you what I think about Yellow Fever - the best part isn't part of the episode.  Of course, the best part of Salvation for me is the previouslies, so my taste is different from most.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I chalk that up to plot contrivance more than Dean was secretly awake but I know a lot of people agree with you.  I agree that Skin was well-done - scary, poignant, and good mythos.

But what I TOTALLY agree with is that they need to stop all the chitchat and start KILLING things.  Season 4 and 5 went overboard on "the touchy-feeling self-help yoga" junk.  More action, less emo - that's my motto.  I think season 6 headed in the right direction until we were sucker punched by the Cas goes angstyemo plot.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I would have much rather watched your version of I Believe...  Antichrist was way too overboard.

    ReplyDelete
  39. My personal feeling is that season 4 started strong and went rapidly downhill mid-season.  However, if you look at the season as a whole season 4 maybe the most divisive with people usually really liking it or really not.  Chalk it up to the DemonSammy plot line and the division of the brothers.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I don't think that most episodes are Dean or Sam.  They are brother episodes and that's what I see when I look at 6th episodes as a whole - nothing different from the others.

    ReplyDelete
  41. LOL kripke apologized for it??? I didnt know tat ahjahhaah.

and wow i cant believe you didnt like yellow fever, im a sucker for stuff like this ahahah

  42. HARDCHOICE! Skin Yellow fever and I really liked you cant handle the truth....

    3- YcHtT
2-... argh! i cant. Yellow fever is just AW and Skin is AW! TOO!!!..<

..... gotta pick skin cause seriously SHAPE SHIFTER!!!!

  44. 11 12 13 14 and then 15. i think I'm gonna accept the end at season 15 yep... :DD

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well, I picked Yellow Fever.  I loved Dean being scared of everything.  When Sam calls him on going the speed limit...rotfl  And I loved the whole section with Lilth...and the cat in the locker...and Dean carrying the flashlight...and freaking because he was using a fake id...and the line "you know who does that...crazy people :)   As you can see...loved it

    2. Skins.  I didn't like the gore, but I loved Sam coming to terms with the fact that his old life is gone.

    3.  You can't handle the truth.  Totally worth it for the conversation between Dean and Bobby.  And RoboSam was so creepy.

    4. I Believe...  didn't like this episode, but didn't dislike it as much as the other two.  The concept was interesting, just not really well played out.  Loved doll Cas and loved Sam trying to fight for the kid because he can't help that he comes from evil and Sam gets that.

    5. Red Sky.  Totally worth a re-watch for the boys in tuxes and the old woman who was Sam's date

    6. No exit.  Would have loved it if Jo wasn't in it.  Just dislike her character all the way around.  Does nothing.  But I did like how they took care of the ghost.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Toss up between Skin and Yellow Fever.

    ReplyDelete
  47. They were just trying so frakking hard to have these talks. I mean, we don't need reassurances from the brothers each episode because we know they're always gonna be there for each other. We just need the hidden "chick-flick" moments, like "Bitch/Jerk", smiling at each other, nodding, hand on the shoulder––stuff that isn't a frakking sermon! But, that doesn't mean we have to get rid of the "talks" entirely. I still love the talks, but not in each and every episode (well, maybe it wasn't in EVERY episode, but it sure felt like it). It just made the brothers seem so out of character. Actually, I'm gonna have to disagree on the season 6 comment. The reason being: they did too few of the hidden "chick-flick" moments, which we were at least guaranteed every season.

AND YES ON THE FIGHTING. I miss the hardcore fighting. I miss the frakking music. I miss the fighting + music. I miss the simplicity of the hunt, of the emotions, of each character, of the plot, etc––simplicity of complicated things. I don't know. I hope you get what I mean lol.

I am praying to the TV gods (and Castiel) that we truly, truly go back to the roots, without taking steps backwards, ya know? I want them to evolve, but keep their "core" Sammy-ness and Dean-ness.

    ReplyDelete
  48. "I think what they have forgotten about, and does need more time /
attention, is the relationship between them. Genuine brotherly moments
have been few and far between ever since s4"

    THIS! THIS!

I have not seen the "moments" since season 3. I was sitting there thinking, "Is this the show I used to watch? Are these the same Sam and Dean?". I don't know. Sigh. I want them to bring those subtle moments back in season 7!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Seasons 1 and 2 are always gonna be my favorite. I don't really see any of the newer seasons matching up to what the earlier seasons had. There was a different feel to them, ya know? They were just so unique and different. I don't know. Season 3 was also great, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I love Skin, Yellow Fever and I Believe the Children are Our Future. Red Sky at Morning and No Exit are episodes I enjoy watching when I haven't seen them in a while, and I enjoyed You Can't Handle the Truth when I watched it (one of the better season 6 episodes in my opinion, especially with how cool Veritas was!). In the end I voted for Yellow Fever because it was funny and telling about Dean and his time in hell all in one.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Skin has to be the best episode followed by Yellow Fever, only because of the comedy.  Watching macho, tough guy Dean running from a Yorkie gets me every time.  The other things he was afraid of and Sam's responses to them was funny.  I enjoyed Jared and Jensen's comedic timing in this episode.  They were good.  I would follow those with You Can't Handle the Truth, No Exit, I Believe Children Are Our Future, and Red Sky at Morning.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hi, Dahne, Thank you for these polls. I'm enjoying them very much. I tend to read things a bit later than everybody else, so that my possible comments come to my mind about some poll when nobody is paying attention to that poll any more. That's why I usually don't post much, even if I completely agree with you that comments are really a gift for us all during hellatus. I do love reading them.

I just completed my own counting of which episode I would choose for each of the 22 polls and I'm surprised at the result: 10 from Season 2, 4 from Season 1 and 2 from each of Seasons 3, 4, 5 and 6. I mean I knew I preferred season 2, but it's so overwhelming I can`t believe it.

I also suppose Season 4 is the one going to get the most love in these polls, and I'm surprised that Simon Said won over Monster Movie. I love both of them but really prefer Simon Said, which is quite good: it has great comedic moments and is also a very interesting input about the special children mithology. Season 4 vs Season 2 was also real tough in the Premieres poll: I chose In My Time of Dying, although I perfectly understand people choosing Rising Lazarus.

In this poll I'm choosing No Exit. None of the six sixth episodes really stand out for me, but it's so hard for me to see No Exit in the last position that I really have to vote for it. I had a lot of fun seeing Jo interacting with the brothers.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hi Maria!  I'm so glad you commented.  It's fun to read what others think, especially in such a long break before season 7 returns.  I'm not surprised that Simon Said won over Monster Movie because Andy is a pretty popular character.  However, I prefer Monster Movie too.  I love its classic feel and how funny it was.

As for choosing a preferred season, I once tried to pick a season mathematically but they all came out close to tied.  Well except season 5 which is my least favorite.  For me, it's more about individual episodes than the season which is why my votes go all over the place.  I love that you already figured out how you are going to vote for the whole contest. :-)
