Supernatural - Favorite 3rd Episode - Poll

Jun 1, 2011

I'm calling yesterday's poll a bit early tonight, but the polls are still open until midnight, Midwest US time. Our standings right now for Favorite Second Episode are:

Are You There God? It's Me, Dean Winchester with 30% of the vote
Good God Y'All is in second with 18.7%

Things were definitely closer than the blow out of the season premiere contest. Today and tomorrow we vote on our favorite third episode. This is one of the toughest for me because 4 of the 6 are in my top 30 episodes, including Dead in the Water which made Supernatural appointment TV for me. What's your favorite? Will it be a threepeat for season 4 this time? I'd say season 4 has a better chance of winning here again than in the fourth episode contest, but I've been wrong with these polls before.

Dead in the Water
Bloodlust
Bad Day at Black Rock
In the Beginning
Free to be You and Me
The Third Man

Don't forget to leave your comments about your choice and why or rank them all. Comments make for great discussion and helps speed hellatus along. Thanks for playing with us and Happy Voting!

  1. This is one of the hardest polls for me because I think the third episode in the first four seasons were all excellent.  Dead in the Water has a special place in my heart because it made Supernatural appointment TV for me.  Bloodlust introduced us to Gordon Walker, still a favorite nemesis, and Lenore, the friendly vampire.  Bad Day at Black Rock was one of the funniest episodes Supernatural has ever had.  "I'm Batman."  "I lost my shoe."  Classic!  In the Beginning added time travel to the list of angel powers and gave us Young Mary and Young John.  It added a whole new level to Supernatural's mytharc also.

The two I can rule out right away are Free to be You and Me, which saw the brothers separated and me bored, and The Third Man, which I think is by far the worst episode of season 6.

  2. Voted Bloodlust because I loved Gordon as a bad guy and as a character.

    Ordering the rest:
In the Beginning (liked the backstory)
Dead in the Water (solidly dark episode)
Free to Be You and Me (was interesting seeing Dean and Sam apart)
Bad Day at Black Rock (alright)
    ...
The Third Man (honestly did not like this episode)

  3. Bad Day at Black Rock for the humor and The Third Man for the hottest workout scene ever

  4. And might I add that Bloodlust was the first time Sammy (I'm gonna say Sammy, 'cause damn it, he is always gonna be Sammy for me!) acknowledged the fact that Dean called him Sammy for a reason and he told Gordon to stfu about calling him Sammy and how only "he (Dean) gets to call me that"; and the way that Dean was surprised/happy at that acknowledgement. Sigh. The good ole days. Plus, I think it may have been one of the first episodes where we saw him open up about his dad's death.

That's why my vote went for that episode.

  5. Uhhh, though one! All episodes are awesome, for different reasons:

    1. Dead in the Water is really scarying, and it's the first time we caught a more profound look at Dean's personality. I loved his interaction with little Lucas (that is the name of the boy, right? rsrsrs)

    2. Bloodlust is not so awesome, but we have Lenore, and the awful Gordon, a real pain in the ass.

    3. Bad Day at the Black Rock is soooo funny! And the introduction of the gorgeous Bella Talbot. I just love her! And all the bad luck thing is very funny.

    4. In the Beggining... time travel! Really cool and exciting see the young John (I really amused by Matt Cohen after seeing him at the Rising Con Brazil!) and young Mary. And finding some more of Azazel's plan is cool too.

    5. My choice, Free To Be You And Me. So, I choose this one because I really like to see the interaction between Cas and Dean. I'm a CassBoy, and he and Dean made a great duo in this one.

    6. The Third Man. Again, I would choose this because of Cas. Is in this one the famous "profound bond" line, that I love so much! And the introduction of my other favorite angel, Balthazar!

    It's a shame they can't all win =/

    ReplyDelete
  6. Don't know which I'm voting for yet.
But I know which one is last on my list. There's not many episodes I out and out dislike, but The Third Man is one of them. It seems hardly possible to me that Ben Edlund was responsible for it.  I hated the kid torture and I don't care if there was a 'good' reason for it or not. I disliked Balthazar intensely (although I have to admit he grew on me so much I was sad to see him die in 6.22).  And I really, really dislike the whole 'profound bond' thing.
The best thing about the whole episode was RoboSam's 'plastic piece of crap' car being totalled.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Dead in the Water because...Amy Acker.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Its just me or season 4 is winning in any tourtmant?XD

    ReplyDelete
  9. AGH...I know which one is the clear winner for me: IN THE BEGINNING...
But DAMMIT... "I lost my shoe!" is just pure comedic GOLD, so Bad Day At Black Rock is 2nd place...
And then there's Bloodlust at #3... Free to be You & Me was a great one for Mark Pellegrino if I remember correctly... Dead in the Water had Amy Acker, and the incredibly creepy water kid...
SO Bloodlust and Dead in the Water are tied at #3... FTBY&M is #4... and The Third Man is #2345. Because that episode was #%&*ing terrible. The only thing that redeems it for me is Balthy.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I greatly enjoyed most of these episodes, but Bad Day at Black Rock has my vote. "I lost my shoe... :( " I am still amazed at how much like a little lost four or five year old Jared made Sam look in that seen. And "I'm Batman!" Dean was having so much fun! Free to Be You and Me is probably second, since I love watching Dean having fun as Cas's expense. Upside down FBI badge tehehehehe. i loved getting the back story on the Impala and seeing young John and Mary in In the Beginning, so that goes #3. The re-introduction of the Impala and meeting Gordon gets Bloodlust to #4. I don't like Gordon, but he is an important character. And it's where we meet Lenore. I don't like that Dean trusted Gordon over Sam (hmmmm...foreshadowing?????) but this was a very compelling episode. Dead in the Water STILL creeps me out. Just went lap swimming at the gym yesterday, thinking how glad I was that I hadn't watched that ep in a month or two! The Third Man ranks 6th for me. Liked the introduction to the plagues and the charger meeting it's end (so happy they didn't land on the Impala...), but I didn't like how uncomfortable Robosam made me feel in the soul search scene. I do not like wondering if Sam was really still stuck in hell or if he is really a monster now! (Yes, I know it makes more sense later, but I still don't like going through it) Don't get me wrong, I think Jared did an amazing job with the character...after all, how hard is it to take a character I love and make him so unlikable just by changing a few mannerisms and attitudes? Brilliantly done! So yeah, loved all the episodes, I just liked a few a little more :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. This one was really hard! I went with Bad Day at Black Rock because its just so funny! But it was really hard to choose between that one and In the Beginning because I loved Dean going back and meeting young John and Mary. But after that it would probably go Free to Be You and Me, Bloodlust, Dead in the Water, and The Third Man.

    ReplyDelete
  12. the episodes that lost out during the first and second poll, they are not in contention again? cuz, being that they were in contention for best and second best episodes, they should be at least third best, right?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wow, this is really hard, I didn't realise that all of the third episodes were so good. I went with "Free to Be You and Me" because I like the Cas/Dean dynamic. But it was super close with Bad Day at Black Rock, because that episode was hilarious and super gory.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The were not in contention for best and second best episodes, it's just the first and second episode of every season (so it was a contest between 1x1, 2x1 3x1, 1x2, 2x2, 3x2 etc.) ;).

    ReplyDelete
  15. I voted for Bad Day at Black Rock, one of the funniest episodes of the show !!
In the Beginning was really great too!
The worst was The Third Man !!

    ReplyDelete
  16. And you lost me here! Which one should I choose? I love Dead in the Water, Bad Day at Black Rock and In the Beginning! Maybe I'll go with DitW, cause recently I decided to watch some old episodes from season 1 and this is one of my favourite;)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, this isn't hard for me at all!

Bad Day at Black Rock hands down!! One of the best episodes of the entire series!!
some months ago I'd have written it was the best comedy episode of the show, but now that we have The French Mistake I'm not so sure anymore... :P
but anyway, it was brilliant!!! I love the fact there are actually no monsters or demons in it, just a little inconspicuous rabbit's foot. And there are absolutely too many great comedy lines to put them all here. The whole episode was written wonderfully and the background music just cracks me up xD

so my vote naturallyt goes to BATMAN! xD

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lot of good ones here's today
In the beginning was great. I loved the whole Mary was a hunter and john wasn't twist.
Bloodlust was also great. We didn't get alot of vampire episodes and this one introduced Gordon who was a great character and human rival for the brothers
Free to be you and me had some great moments, all involving dean and cas, mainly in a strip club

But the hands down winner with no doubt or questioning in my mind is bad day at black rock. That episode is absolutely classic and is very high in my top 20 list. It's funny and awesome and I have watched it and quote it ("I'm batman") many times
I loved the whole cursed rabbits foot idea with the good and bad luck
Sam with his bad luck and dean with his good luck set up the episode with perfect humor
This episode also introduced bela. I know I lot of people didn't like her but I did. I found her interesting and different to what we'd normally been seeing on the show and her interactions with the brothers was always funny. I loved how much they hated her
So all round, I loved this episode, I found it was one of the many season 3 episodes that were absolutely awesome classics.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I also hated seeing the brothers split up. The best part of this show is how they work together so even though we may have gotten some great dean and cas scenes, seeing sam and dean apart like that I found really boring.
That's also one of the reasons why mannequin sucked, they weren't working together, and so soon after sam had gotten his soul back no less

    ReplyDelete
  20. This one was hard because I love Bad Day at Black Rock but In the Beginning is my Favorite followed by Bad Day at Black Rock, Dead in the Water, Free to Be Me and You, Bloodlust, and The Third Man.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I had to pick Bad Day at Black Rock.  Too many classic lines in this one for me not to.  The "I'm Batman" line alone would win it for me.

    The others in order:
    In the Beginning
    Free to be You...
    The Third Man
    Dead in the Water
    Bloodlust

For me, I was never a Gordon fan and think I may have only re-watched this one once or twice.   The Third Man I actually liked.  Intro to Balthazar, the angels falling into Sam's car, the workout scene.  Dead in the Water had Amy Ackers...'nough said.
And I loved the Sam/Jess--Sam/Lucifer scenes in Free to be..
And the intro to Campbell's was right up there too.

After picking my favorite, the rest of the order was difficult (except last place :)  )

    ReplyDelete
  22. Tough call. I wanted to vote for Bloodlust because I love Gordon, but I went with Free to Be because Sam made a smokin-hot bartender, and the visit to the brothel by Dean and Cas was priceless.

    ReplyDelete
  23. As everyone has said, the calibre of third episodes seems to be incredibly high. There really is nothing much separating the four others: I didn't hate The Third Man as much as many others did, and Free to Be You and Me was an important stepping stone in getting the brothers back together, Dead in the Water was one of the most solid MOTWs and Bloodlust set up many elements that the show later revisited which were great.

However, the two standouts are Bad Day and In the Beginning. I think the latter is one of the series' best episodes because of the phenomenal way in which they made a time travel story work really well, tying the mythology of the past into the present so fantastically. Nevertheless, Bad Day was a hilarious comedy episode, which was definitely one of my Season 3 faves.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Dead in the Water. Because that was the first episode where we saw tha there was more about Dean than women and beer. It was the first time that Jensen was allowed to really spread his wings.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I've thought about this some more and i've adopted a new tactic because having eliminated both TTM & In the Beginning I still found it difficult to choose. So, rather than list everything about the episodes I'm going with my overall gut reaction when I think of the episode - otherwise I won't have decided before the poll closes. Using that logic - which isn't logic at all & will have changed by the next poll anyway here goes:4th Free to Be You and Me. 3rd Bloodlust. 2nd:Bad Day At Black Rock. 1st Dead In the Water - purely because when I think of this episode I always see Dean erupting from the water with Lucas in his arms. - which always makes me feel good

    ReplyDelete
  26. My #1 choice was Bad Day at Black Rock- the sheer comedy of it! Nothing beats "I lost my shoe" and Sam's adorable puppydog expression.

Free to Be You and Me- Sam was seriously the sexiest bartender I think I ever seen. I liked watching him throw darts, and oh yes, he was shirtless in the beginning of the episode.

The Third Man- The hottest workout scene to ever grace my television scene.

Bloodlust- Sam being awesome and saving Lenore and her group of good vamps. Gordon getting his ass handed to him was priceless. I loved it when Dean punched him and said "Okay, I'm good. We can go!"

In the Beginning- I like this one and all, just not enough Sam. Though I did love seeing Matt Cohen playing young John Winchester. So HOT!

Dead in the Water- I loved watching the boys dive in the water and Sam save the mom in the bathtub, but that's about it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. Bad Day at Black Rock - The funniest episode and lots of brotherly moments.
    2. Bloodlust - Gordon was a great villain
    3. Dead in the Water - The episode was good, but the kid actor wasn't believable.
    4. In the Beginning  - I liked the time travel but missed the brother camaraderie
    5. Free to Be You and Me - I liked Sam's story while they were separated but hated the brothel scene with Dean and Cas.
    6. The Third Man - Second worse episode of the season behind only The Man Who Would be King.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Gordon was one of my favorites too.  I like how Dean thought he was an ally at first but was swayed by Sam into seeing hie black and white point-of-view for what it was.  Also, seeing their reaction when they realize Gordon killed his sister.  Awesome!  I miss Gordon and his fanatical ways.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ha!  People do seem to like season 4 so far.  If it wins the next round I'm going to suspect the poll is rigged and I created it.  :-D

    ReplyDelete
  30. This one is really tough for me too.  Oh, and I'm jealous that you were at the Rising Con.  I bet it was insane fun.

    ReplyDelete
  31. C'mon, The Third Man is in my top 10 episodes of all time.  That would be the top 10 worst.  Basically the whole episode goes flat after they "rule Moses out as a suspect."  The only thing that redeems it for me is some one-liners and the destruction of Sam's sad little car.  I'm surprised you don't give it points for the gore though.

    ReplyDelete
  32. xLiesj is right.  This isn't for best episode overall, just where we'd rank them against other episodes in their same position (all premieres against each other, all finales, etc.)  If we have time, I may take the winners and do an ultimate vote but it depends on how long Adam's Best Show contest lasts.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I voted for Free to Be You and Me. Classic Cas moments! And hot bartender Sam! :)

Though I do also love In the Beginning. I'll have to rewatch Bad Day at Black Rock. I can't remember it at all.

    ReplyDelete
  34. That's how I ended up too.  Dead in the Water wins on nostalgia for me but Bad Day and Beginning are very, very close.  I'd add Bloodlust also in my toss-ups.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I was originally going to do a best line in each episode poll but Bad Day reminded me that there would be far to many choices.  It does have some of the best lines this side of the Pilot.  I also didn't mind Bela in small doses.  I thought she was funny most of the time but I do see how her constant one-uppance got annoying for people who watched season 3 in marathons.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I still maintain that the lake scene is one of the most perfect scenes in Supernatural.  The way the sound goes off and the operatic music swells.  The emotion in Amy Acker's face.  The relief when Dean comes up with Lucas only to not see Lucas moving.  Perfection.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I thought I was the only one who didn't like The Man Who Would Be King.  Glad to know I'm not alone.  Talk, talk, talk and no action.  Bah!

    ReplyDelete
  38. wow, how opinions vary... The Man Who Would be King is for me one of the very best episodes of the season, if not the best one.
So now I'm curious - what is your favourite episode of season 6?

    ReplyDelete
  39. what are you talking about? Bad Day has been in lead all day long and it's most likely going to win this...

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree that Bad Day is likely to win and I hope it does, but In the Beginning is a strong competitor.  I was merely pointing out that if Metamorphosis is strongly competing next round, especially over my beloved Weekend at Bobby's and The End, I will be shaking my head.  It will be fun to see how Wilson votes though because I know he really enjoyed both Metamorphosis and WaB.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'll give you my favorite four:
The French MistakeThe Man Who Knew Too MuchFrontierlandUnforgiven

The only reason The Man Who Knew Too Much is not #1 is because I though they shortchanged Sam's story.

    ReplyDelete
  42. That's the infamous "I lost my shoe" episode! The one with the rabbit foot where Sam is cursed after touching it and all of his luck turns bad! lol

    ReplyDelete
  43. Dead in the water...It was the episode that made me stick with the show (Plus Kim's first episode ever).
It holds a special place in my heart and ALWAYS makes my "top 5 SPN episodes" list.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Loving the Dead in the Water love.  Usually people think I'm nuts for including it in my top episodes, but I fell in love with Supernatural with this episode and every time I see it, I remember how awesome it was the first time.  I don't usually stay with shows beyond 3-5 years, but Supernatural is an exception.  I liked it from the pilot but it turned into obsession with Dead in the Water.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Of course "I lost my shoe" episode is number one that was hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I had to go with Free to be You and Me... It' so sad to see the brothers
apart, but Dean going on a case with Cas is hilarious! And this makes
the idea that Dean hadn't seen Sam in five years (in The End) much more
realistic. and makes his choice to rejoin Sam far less certain.
In the Beginning would be my next choice... "I'm going to hell... again"
is a great line. Though with what we know now, I really have to wonder
what all the Campbells were up to (I'm looking at you, Grandpa Creepy)
that Crowley had Samuel down in the basement....
I love Bad Day at Black Rock, poor Sam really should've put that
rabbit's foot in the zip up pocket in his jacket! I love how it's funny,
but the whole time you're terrified for Sam... classic Supernatural!
And who doesn't love Dean's 'I'm Batman!' Of course he saves his
brother, that's his definition of good luck :-)
Dead in the Water and Bloodlust are both great too (really, all five of
these episodes so far are pretty close for me, and for different
reasons, so this is hard to choose) DITW is just plain creepy, and I
love seeing Dean with a little kid for the first time (and seeing Sam's
reaction to it). And Bloodlust gives us a 'good' monster, and the true
monster:Gordon (I never liked you Gordo). I also love Sam being a
balancing factor for Dean, and saying that he'll just have to stick
    around!
The Third Man is my least favorite (though I like it). I think the whole
first half of Season 6 just feels off.. but really that's because of
Sam. I think it's a real credit to Jared that he could pull off soulless
so well that we really don't like or feel comfortable with Sam long
before we know what's wrong with him. Getting fans to not like a
character that they've loved for years is a real challenge. I think he's
an amazing actor, and I love that we can tell at a glance which Sam
we're dealing with... How happy I've been with the second half of the
season is directly proportional to how uncomfortable the boys
relationship was in the first half.

    ReplyDelete
  47. 1. Bad Day at Black Rock - It's hilarious, and I actually liked Bela's introduction to the series.
    2. Bloodlust - It made me love Sammy <3

    3. Free To Be You And Me - It was fun watching Castiel interact with humans.
    4. In The Beginning - I liked meeting Samuel and Deanna, and the scene
in the diner was an excellent homage to Back To The Future.
    5. Dead in the Water - We saw Dean's soft side for the first time, which
was good. Even if it is all we see these days. Plus, Amy Acker.
    6. The Third Man - It was alright. I recall something about a profound bond.

  48. For me it's "Free to be you and me" : even if the boys weren't together physically you could feel them still being with each other in their heart. The opening montage with "Simple Man" was so amazing, the way Dean was looking at the empty seat next to him in the Impala, so sweet. I loved the scenes between Sam and Lindsay, the two of them really worked well ! I loved how Sam spit the daemon blood, so powerful. The scenes between Cas and Dean were also great.
Awesome writing, very good director, amazing acting : Free to be you and me is a personal favorite and one I didn't see coming !

Oh and... My GOD Jared looked SO good in this episode !!! XD

    ReplyDelete
  49. Bad Day at Black Rock was the funniest episode IMO, but In The Beginning still holds a very dear spot in my heart. It is still in my top three favorite episodes of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  50. oh, got it... thanks...

    ReplyDelete
  51. hey btw, which won the best season? i bet it was s04

    ReplyDelete
  52. Bad Day at Black Rock has always been one of my favorites.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I don't think Metamorphosis has any shot at winning the next one, it will be either The End or Weekend at Bobby's, like you say. Still don't get the hype around the latter, but people really seemed to enjoy it a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Season 4 beat season 5 by 12 votes.  Just shows that my taste in Supernatural runs counter to the majority.  Season 5 is my least favorite by an eon.
