Supernatural - Favorite 10th Episode - Poll

12 Jun 2011

The 8th episode poll is about to close and it is no surprise that Changing Channels won with 52% of the vote. A Very Supernatural Christmas came in second with 36% of the vote so the remaining 12% was shared by the other 4 episodes. On an interesting note, Bugs got one vote so all episodes have officially been favorited by someone. I'm leaning towards the people felt sorry for it theory myself.

Today's list of 10th episodes comes without detailed commentary because I need to watch a couple of them again before I do my ranking. However, I think they are vastly superior to many of the episodes in recent polls. My bet is that Abandon All Hope takes the prize although I'm leaning towards Asylum myself. Happy voting! Comments are a cool day in the midst of a sweltering summer.

10th episodes:

Asylum
Hunted
Dream a Little Dream of Me
Heaven and Hell
Abandon All Hope
Caged Heat

  1. It's going to come down to Asylum, Abandon All Hope, or Caged Heat for me although I really, really enjoyed Hunted and Dream a Little Dream of Me (except the ending) too.  Have to rewatch before casting my vote this time.

  2. Definitely a toss-up between Asylum and Abandon All Hope. Both were strong episodes. But I ended up choosing Asylum––for the simple fact that we had Sam turn on Dean at the end. I know, it wasn't really him, but parts of how felt were exaggerated and twisted and turned against Dean. It was this emotional battle that really won me over to this episode more than Abandon All Hope.

  3. Which one did you choose?

  4. Castiel was too hot in Caged Heat for me not to pick this episode. But I love AAH and H&H... and Hunted....

alot of great episodes here but for me there was no question about it
    i loved abandon all hope
    it was amazing
    it was shocking
    it was unexpected
it was emotional and it was awesome
it contained so much action and emotion and awesomness and the story moved pretty quickly (even if it did amount to nothing b/c the colt didn't work)
AAH is definately in my top 25 list

the rest in order would prob be
    2. caged heat
    3. heaven and hell (yeah, a season 4 episode i liked :D)
    4. asylum
    5. hunted
    6. dream a little dream of my (its not that i didn't like it, i just don't remember it as much as the others)

  6. I would say this was hard.  If Abandon All Hope was not on the list, if would be.  It is my favorite of this group, hands down.  # is a toss up but I guess Caged Heat edges slightly over Asylum, but just barely.  I would round out the rest with Heaven and Hell, Hunted, and Dream a Little Dream of Me.  I've been rewatching all the episodes.  It's hiatus.  There's little of interest for me on television.  IF I'm off during the day, I'll catch the two episodes on TNT.  Otherwise, I try to watch Leverage and Hawaii Five-O.  That's about all of the programming I get now that Smallville is going to be gone.  I work Wednesdays and Thursdays on a split shift so I dvr VDs.  Nothing else interests me.  The only show I never miss is Supernatural.

  7. For me...in order

    Asylum
    Abandon All HopeHunted
    Caged Heat
Heaven and HellDream a Little Dream of Me

  8. This was the toughest choice yet for me as I love all of these episodes a lot and frequently watch them :) (apart from Caged Heat, but it is definitely one of my favourite season 6 episodes). In the end I voted for Heaven and Hell because it was one of the most important episodes in my opinion of season 4, it was a bit different from a normal spn monster-of-the-week format, and (mostly) for the last scene where Dean confesses to Sam what he did in Hell. OPT!!! ;)

  9. Abandon All Hope, then Heaven and Hell and Dream a Little Dream of Me;)

  10. Oh, this is the toughest poll yet for me. The only ones that aren't really in the running for me are 'Dream a Little Dream of Me' (never one of my favourites despite Bobby's presence, though I do love that end scene where Dean confronts himself) and 'Heaven and Hell'. The others are all in the running. Further consideration is needed before I make this choice.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Another incredibly hard poll. The only clear decision is 'Dream a Little Dream of Me' in 6th place even though I thought that was one of the better episodes of Season 3.

    The next are probably:

    5. Asylum
    4. Hunted
    3. Heaven and Hell

Caged Heat and Abandon all Hope are two of my favourite SPN episodes - viewing them in terms of the episode - AAH was more emotional whereas CH had the shock factor and Crowley. The only way I can decide is their role in the overall arc and I think the events in Caged Heat were better followed up later so my vote will have to go there.

  12. Can't choose between Abandon All Hope and Caget Heat, bith are amazing for me..

    ReplyDelete
  13. Very hard to chose between Abandon all hope and Caged Heat. Think I'm going with the first, for the simple fact that my dear Jo was there.

  14. Even though I love Asylum, Hunted and especially Abandon All Hope, I just have to go with Heaven and Hell. That episode changed.. everything for me. I already LOVED SPN, but after I had watched that ep, I was speechless. I really wanna vote for Abondon All Hope, but I just can't.. when Dean talked about Hell in H&H.. it just made a HUGE impact on me.. I can't even explain it.. but that episode just means so much to me :') And also, epic torture Ruby scene, really HOT Dean/Anna sex scene.. And great action!
So my vote goes to Heaven and Hell. With Abandon All Hope as a close second.

  15. I think I'm the first to admit to voting for Hunted.  All of these shows were great, but I had to choose, and Hunted is a favorite for me - it's another one that really represents why I voted for season 2 as my favorite season in the earlier poll.  Loved the Gordon vs. Sam & Dean cat and mouse games.  Loved the music at the beginning.  Loved Eva before she turned evil ("Dude, who are you?").  Loved Dean kicking Gordon's ass when he saw him shooting at Sam (before Gordon kicked his).  Loved Ellen's response to Dean ("Well, they say you can't protect your loved ones forever.  I saw screw that").  Love the creepiness of the "yellowed eyed man" telling people to do bad things in their dreams.  And loved the twist, clever ending.  Sam got out of this by using his brains, not by some convenient solution just dropping into their lap.

    1) I voted for Heaven and Hell. I think I am in a minority that LOVED IKWYDLS and H&H. They were my favourite eps of s4. If the writers had had the courage of their convictions and continued down the road (of Ruby actually being on their side) that they were clearly planning at that stage, s4 would have been a great deal more enjoyable. Unfortunately they were (IMO) swayed by the anti Ruby sentiment and chickened out. S4 went from bad to worse after this as they decided that (via a totally unconvincing and actually ludicrous if you examine it - convoluted, complex and hugely risky long term plan decades in the making) Ruby had been working with Lilith towards freeing Lucifer all along.

    2) Hunted is another favourite of mine. I love that ep. Great final showdown scene with Gordon, Sam and a desperate Dean. Jensen's acting was amazing in that ep. The look on his face when he thought Sam had been killed. Awww!

    3) I also love AAH but didn't vote for it because it is so damned depressing and because I think killing off Ellen was a huge mistake for the show.

    4) Asylum - creepy and scary. Good ep, but not high up when compared to the other eps on this list.

    5) DALDOM - fine. Good ep. But not up there with the best.

    6) Caged Heat - no chance. No ep with soulless Sam in it will ever compete for me. Hated that period of the show.

Wow another H&H fan. We are few but mighty MrsDW. I love this ep. Totally agree with you.

The epic Ruby torture scene you mention was powerful, but sadly ended up making no sense because the writers (IMO) changed their mind about Ruby's role and real motivations after this ep. If she was (as they would later have us believe) working for Lilith and against the boys at this stage of the story, most of Ruby's actions in this and IKWYDLS, but particularly letting Alastair torture her, don't add up.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree with a lot of your comments here about the episodes, and I loved IKWYDLS and H&H too, but I disagree that Ruby's role changed.  I think there were a lot of hints back in season 3 that Ruby was working on Sam to try to harden Sam's nature and get him to start using his powers, which we know now would eventually lead to him freeing Lucifer.  The scene in Bello when she urges him to kill the virgin to get rid of the demons is an example. I think in H&H Ruby was just working on getting Sam to trust her.

My problem with this whole Sam/Lucifer storyline is that Sam, even when he was drinking demon blood, always had good intentions and was always thinking of others.  How does that equal Lucifer, who was a spoiled child who hated humanity and enjoyed bringing suffering to others?  The connection was always a bit of a stretch, and I don't think the storytellers ever succeeded in selling it.

  19. Why did you hate the ending of Dream?

    ReplyDelete
  20. lostrocks4ever12 June 2011 at 14:59

i think the whole point of that though was that he still betrayed dean (the brother) and dissapointed john (the father) and that was the connection between him and lucifer
but i agree, even though it wasn't really right, he always thought what he was doing was right

    ReplyDelete
  21. I get what you're saying about the similarity in family roles being the connection.   I just think it's a loose one.  The way I see it, Sam chose to follow his own path rather than following orders.  With John that meant going to college rather than becoming a hunter, and with Dean that meant using his psychic powers even though Dean was opposed to it.  That was mirrored Lucifer who also questioned his father.  But Lucifer became evil because he was a petulant child who had no empathy for others.  Sam was the opposite of that.

I disagree that Sam ever betrayed Dean.  He chose not to obey Dean but at the end did it openly and even invited Dean to come along with him and Ruby to hunt down Lilleth.  Earlier on, there was lying on Sam's part to conceal the fact he was drinking demon blood, and there was lying on Dean's part about him remembering Hell, and that he was a torturer.  But I don't think betrayal is the right word here.  They were both covering up something they were ashamed of.

  22. I voted for Abandon All Hope (one of few season 5 episodes i really like with  "The End", "Changing Channels", and "Swan Song) followed by Caged Heat, Hunted, Asylum and Dream a Little Dream Of Me.

Whatever Ruby's motivations in s3, the clear implication at the start of s4 - right up to these 2 eps - was that she had come out of hell, hellbent (see what I did there? ;-)) on helping Sam get revenge on Lilith.

If she was on Lilith's side in H&H and IKWYDLS, why let Alastair torture her? There was no one else there to see what she went through so it couldn't be said to be done to convince S&D of anything because they didn't see it happen. The plan was for Ruby to get Alastair there, and Dean to get the angels there. She could have easily done that without the torture. The excuse (retrofitted later via a very clunkly and obviously placed line in the finale) was that Alastair wasn't in on the plan. But that doesn't work either. Alastair was Lilith's right hand man, so should have known Ruby was on team Lilith, and not telling him was both unlikely and massively risky. Because Alastair supposedly didn't know about Liliths wonderful masterplan, and Ruby's crucial role in it, he might well have killed her in H&H. Or the angels might have in the showdown in the barn. That would have put a big spoke in Liliths wheels. Also if R was working for L, why even tell S&D about Anna? If she hadn't they would never have know the difference, but the demons would have got Anna and been able to break the seals much quicker with her telling them the angels plans.

I still maintain that these 2 eps were written with the clear intention that Ruby was on Dean and Sam's side, or at least that they genuinely shared the objective of killing Lilith, and that where they went with Ruby after this was due to a change of plans. This change of plans then meant that much of H&H/IKWYDLS doesn't really stand up to scrutiny.

    ReplyDelete
  24. hmm.. really? wasn't that just to get them out of all the angel business, so that she could get Sam out alive, to later kill Lilith? I don't know, I've never thought about it like that.. xD

    ReplyDelete
  25. You make some good points, and it's possible they changed directions, but I think it's also possible that Ruby was handing S&D this victory with the angels because her objective to get Sam where Lileth needed him was far more important in the end.  Another possiblity is that Ruby didn't initially know that Anna was an angel and was giving them info she didn't think was related to their bigger campaign, again, to build trust with Sam.   A third possibility is that she believed that Alistair would outpower Cas and Uriel (which seemed to be the case) and didn't forsee Anna getting her grace back and escaping. Letting herself be tortured helped build her credibility.

  26. HUNTED-didn't like a single other 10th episode of the series.

If these polls have told me anything its that there are actually a hell of a lot of episodes of SPN that I haven't liked.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wow, there's not one of these episodes that I really "love". I like them all, but nope don't love any... Actually, Abandon hope is probably my least favorite episode on the list. I cry for 5-10 minutes every time, so I avoid that episode like the plague. I guess some day I will be able to "survive" Ellen realizing that Jo is dead... but not anytime soon. Maybe if I didn't have a 20 something daughter it would be easier.... *sniff*.

    ReplyDelete
  28. too hard...love many of the 10th episode but "abandon all hope" was a great one...like asylium...caged heat didn't like so more now that i saw all this average 6th season...

  29. Well this is an interesting new feature on SpoilerTV.com. I've been seeing these articles for a while, but it never really occured to me that these actually are polls for favorite SPN episodes. To be honest, I'm a bit shocked. When did the site become SupernaturalTV.com? Or are these polls gonna be here for every show?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ok, so Ellen and Jo's death was one of the saddest scenes ever for me, and very poignant. But there is no contest for this episode: CAGED HEAT hands down one of my all-time favorites. Even amongst this great competition :P

Even in the mediocre season 6, I found quite a few awesome episodes, and this is around the top of the list for me :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. YOU'RE GONNA DIE. THIS, THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO BECOME.
    (I love the ending....Love it!)

But still, vote for Caged Heat! if only for the pizza man?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I have put these polls on here as a fun way for SpoilerTV's Supernatural fans to pass the hiatus.  I'm sure that DarkUFO would be happy to allow you to create a poll for your favorite shows.  Just ask him.  I'm not sure why having a poll for our show would be a problem for anyone else.  It hardly means that SpoilerTV is all about Supernatural.  Checking out the new postings I see many, many shows represented.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah, maybe I overreacted a little.. You have a good point, and I don't have such a big problem with it. I might be kind of jealous, 'cause the shows I like don't have a big community like Supernatural does. It just surprises me that I'm the only one who seems to be bothered :) anyway, have fun voting

    ReplyDelete
  34. I loved all of these episodes but I won't go into long boring detail about why.

I'm voting Caged Heat. (and not just cuz of the pizza man scene.)Although Abandon All Hope and Asylum come very, very close.
H&H - I disliked Anna from the first and my opinion never changed. The best part was Dean's confession to Sam about torturing souls in hell.
Both Hunted and Dream a Little Dream had really great moments.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Definitelly between "Abandon all hope" and "Dream a little dream"... now I must chose....

    ReplyDelete
  36. Although Abandon All Hope had Ellen and Jo's amazing goodbyes and Caged Heat allowed the boys to make up for working with Crowley earlier in the season, Heaven and Hell was the best episode. We were introduced to the real Anna, discovered more about angels, found out about Dean's trip to Hell, saw Alastair's creepy side and had a huge fight between angels and demons (on screen! which doesn't happen often)... and come on, the grace was pretty awesome looking :D

    ReplyDelete
  37. IMO, Lilith had a lot of doubts about letting herself die in order to free Lucifer. Ruby did a lot of impractical things to gain Sam's trust. Had Sam gone through with the spell in Jus In Bello in Season Three, Ruby would have died and thrown off Lilith's plans. Had Sam been in the station when Lilith had shown up, she probably would have killed him. Ruby was more loyal than Lilith was... she needed to succeed in her part of the plan, but Lilith knew that Ruby's role would eventually end up killing her. that's why she tried to back out by making the deal with Sam in The Monster at the end of this Book.

    ReplyDelete
  38. This poll is a great competition, but I didn't really have a problem choosing.

I voted Heaven and Hell, this episode will always have a warm spot in my heart for its great angel-demon dynamic. Like I said in the 9th episode poll, I loved Anna in season 4 and I really liked the connection she had with Dean (the only other girl I liked with Dean so much was Lisa). It also had Cas and Uriel and the tension between them and the boys was great too. Plus the famous "you see, he has this weakness, he likes you" aww, beginnings of the Dean/Cas friendship. Plus the fact Dean was ready to get Anna killed to save Sam. Plus Alastair. Plus the BIG REVEAL about torturing the souls. I mean, for me this episode was almost perfect.

The rest are all strong episodes too, especially Abandon All Hope and Caged Heat, but I just dislike Jo too much to vote for any episode with her in it and the fact they had to push that totally fake supposed-to-be-love-relationship between her and Dean till her very last second on the screen made me turn my heart to stone to the point I was actually happy about her death. The sad thing was Ellen died with her. I liked Lucifer in this episode and his talk with Cas. And I liked how Cas threw Meg on the floor and walked on her :P

by the way, these polls show me how different my taste is from the majority of SPN fans. If Croatoan and Abandon All Hope win their polls, then I will have voted only for 4 out of 10 winners, not even 50%...

    ReplyDelete
  39. That's the hardest one for me so far..Unsurprisingly though my vote goes to "Abandon All Hope".The episode was INSANE!
That being said, not voting for "Asylum","Heaven and Hell" and "Caged Heat" is just wrong..  : (

    ReplyDelete
  40. If it helps any, I'm batting 3/10.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I had to go with Caged Heat.  Loved Cas, pornos, Crowley, Meg... everything about it was just spot on.

#2.  Heaven and hell-- Totally worth it for the end scene with Dean and Sam on the Impala.
    #3. Dream a little dream
    #4. Asylum
#5. Abandon all Hope--didn't enjoy this one either...I know I'm totally the exception.  Again, its a Jo thing :)
#6. Hunted--Considering I can't even remember which on this is, it has to go to the bottom.

  42. geordiegirl196713 June 2011 at 10:01

I agree Chris. Sam's actions in s4 were not aimed at Dean. He didn't want to betray him. In fact he desperately wanted Dean to help him, but he was convinced killing Lilith was the right thing to do, and he believed Dean's experience in Hell had left him gunshy. He wanted to be the one who did the hard thing, and took that responsibility because Dean had been doing that for him his whole life. And he was still trying to make up for the fact that he couldn't save Dean from his deal, and wasn't the one who got him out of hell in the end. So when Dean didn't support his play he did it anyway. He disobeyed him - yes. He hurt his feelings - definitely. But he did not betray him.
