I don't watch any of the eight shows on offer today, but I'm wishing luck to all of them on the final day of Round One!!
ReplyDeleteNikita, HIMYM, Firefly & BSG.
ReplyDeleteEasy choices today :)
HIMYM is/was one of my favorite comedies, but Parks and Rec has surpassed it. There goes my vote.
ReplyDeleteHIMYM, Firefly, and BSG for sure. Otherwise, I figured that Nikita would beat out 30 Rock due to the general CW love on SpoilerTV.
ReplyDeleteOn that note, I was REALLY surprised to see Angel beat Friends. I loved both shows, but I figured that Friends would still win due to being, well, Friends. I love being on a genre friendly fansite that still caters to mainstream fandoms. I'm sure yesterday was a great day for David Boreanez fans.
So yesterday screwed my bracket but good. At least I feel good about voting with my heart instead of my head now. Voting:
ReplyDeleteNikita because 30 Rock does nothing for me.
How I Met Your Mother because NPH rocks everything he does.
JAG mostly because I think Firefly is overrated and I know it will win anyway.
Cold Case - now here's one I love. Too bad it doesn't make it into the next round. Seriously though, if you haven't watch it, try it. There is NO show that does a better job of incorporating music into the plot and I love the crime flashbacks. It stands out as the best crime procedural of all that I have ever watched.
Nikita, HIMYM, Firefly, Cold Case =)
ReplyDeleteWait! Angel beat Friends? I totally misread the results of the last poll. (How that happened I have no idea. It's not like it's hard to read a bar graph. Blaming it on lack of sleep.) Then hot biscuits, I am back in the race. Woo hoo!
ReplyDeleteWhoa, wait, what? Backup. What's this about music?
ReplyDeleteOnly Parks for me, hope it doesn't lose against HIMYM :/
ReplyDeleteEasy ones for me today...
ReplyDeleteNikita, HIMYM, Firefly and BSG.
Nikita,HIMYM,FIREFLY and BSG.
ReplyDeleteOne of the easiest days for me...
Man, if you love shows that integrate music into the plot of the show, you have to check out Cold Case. They bring in a wide variety of music from all kinds of eras. Whatever time period the original crime took place they have music from then. It's awesome! It's also why you can't get it on DVD. The music rights are too expensive.
ReplyDeleteIf you live in America, TNT plays exactly 1 episode of Cold Case each weekday. Check it out. Even if you find police procedurals boring, it is worth it for the music alone. Plus, I'm a sucker for flashbacks and that's the other aspect that makes Cold Case better than the other procedurals out there.
30 Rocks, Parks (that was probably the hardest decision i've had to make so far this competition.) Firefly! and Battlestar Galactica.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds awesome! I am a VERY big fan of music being incorporated into the plot. I'm also really big on musicology. I just got a copy of White Collar S1 (mostly because of your push for it here on STV), so I'll have to check out Cold Case! It's too bad that it isn't available on DVD :(.
ReplyDeleteNikita,HIMYM,haven't watched Firefly or JAG,Cold Case.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I love about SpoilerTV the most. You hear about all kinds of great shows you missed. I'm currently watching The Walking Dead because people were so positive about it. I hope you like White Collar. It's my summer fun show and Mozzie is rapidly shooting up the ladder of my favorite all-time characters.
ReplyDeleteAs for Cold Case, one of my favorite things is how you go from an episode that highlights early jazz to Nirvana or Bruce Springsteen the next episode. Then later it's funk or classic rock. It really is a microcosm of American and Western music
30 Rock, Parks, Firefly and BSG. The last one was hard because I love Cold Case too.
ReplyDeleteExactly the same for me! :)
ReplyDeleteAgree about the finding out about great shows thing. It was all the positive feedback about Game of Thrones that had me watching the show, and I'm so glad I did. May have to watch The Walking Dead at some point too, I've heard a lot of good things about it.
ReplyDeleteDidn't vote on the first poll, since I didn't like the only episode of 30 Rock I've watched, and think this Nikita re-sth doesn't hold a candle to the original series.
ReplyDeleteVoted HIMYM, because I love all the acting (especially NPH), and until I watched Community, it was by far my most favourite comedy series ever. That said, I've heard great things about Parks & Recreation, so I won't mind HIMYM losing to it.
Firefly because I loved its unique (to my eyes) take on a 'science fiction' universe, and I've never heard anything about JAG beyond its name. :P
And Cold Case, since I always loved watching it and consider it the best procedural (if you can call it that) ever. I was so sad when it ended!
A last note (sorry for the huge comment), I absolutely love the variety in this contest and how we now often get 4 polls a day. I vote every time, even if I don't comment. Thank you for the great work you're putting in this competition, and also to the fans for the energetic commentary. I might not like some of the 'super favourite' series, but I know what it means to absolutely love a show. :)
Parks & Recs vs. HIMYM was probably the hardest decision for me in this competition. P-Rex has been amazing this last 2 seasons and is currently simply one of the best 2 network comedies. However HIMYM in its prime was a really great and fun show and i still enjoy it. So due to the fact that it has been on for 6 seasons now and being very funny in its first seasons, HIMYM gets my vote today.
ReplyDeleteDidn't really watch any of the other shows apart from 30 Rock and a rare glance at JAG, so those shows also got my vote and I kept myself out of the last one.
Verdict's still out for me about Walking Dead. It will depend on if the plot and characters pull me in more than the gore sucks me out. Not a huge fan of gore. Although I will say that if the Walking Dead doesn't win massive Emmys for make-up, something is wrong. Their zombies look awesome, gore and all.
ReplyDeleteAgain, I voted with my bracket in mind. 30 Rock, HIMYM, Firefly and BSG. Although HIMYM and Firefly were luckily what my heart wanted too. xD
ReplyDeleteAnyone else notice the massive photo-shopping in the Firefly picture? Even if he is further into the foreground, I can't see Nathan Fillion being THAT much taller than Summer Glau and Sean Maher.
Would you say it's worth watching though? And how bad is the gore factor, are we talking True Blood level or worse, because I'm not good with that stuff!
ReplyDeleteYou haven't seen Firefly? Such an amazing show.
ReplyDeleteI haven't. It's part of a long list of shows I need to watch... I'm trying out Arrested Development atm... as well as Chuck :P
ReplyDeleteI can't really say yet. I've only watched the pilot and the main character is currently stuck in a tank. I'll see the next 2 episodes today so I'll have a clearer picture of what it is about then. The man and kid the main character hooked up with at first were intriguing. I hope they make it out of the house without getting bitten by zombies.
ReplyDeleteNathan is 6'1" and Sean Mahar is 5'10". It's probably because of the perspective of the shot that he looks like a giant there.
ReplyDeleteSitcoms don't draw big online crowds... certainly not here... we're all about sci-fi, drama and the supernatural/ghosts/aliens!!!
ReplyDelete... and singing kids :/
AD is a great show too ;) A lot of really good running jokes most people only catch on their second time watching the series though.
ReplyDeleteThe bad part was seeing Oz taking a beating from Stargate which also isn't exactly the most popular show here. I didn't have much hope, but it hurt anyway.
ReplyDelete30 rock, HIMYM, Firefly, BSG.
ReplyDeleteMusic in TV and Film is my favourite music and I love it when the worrk it into the flow of the story. The Transformers trailer, as much as I'm not a Transformers fan is a great example of how awesome moving images & music work together!... my ipod is full of tunes from Inception, LOST, Fringe, Kick-Ass,
ReplyDeleteE.S.Posthumus has lots of songs as well!
Somehow I also bought Muppets Christmas Carol and it made it into my musical life... I call it the exception that proves the rule :P
You mean Glee? I don't think we have a very big Glee community. Most of the time we have polls where Glee pulls ahead it because the polls spread to Tumblr and Twitter. If you go back to the Romance Comp a lot of people supporting Glee in the comments were first(and last) time posters.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure some of them stuck around but I haven't seen a lot of them since.
You'll like the final few episodes of S1 then... it takes a step back from the Zombies and focuses on the characters!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, STV is great for finding new shows :)
Stargate, as a franchise, ran for over 15 years. Almost every sci-fi fan(and we have a lot of those) has seen it. And if they haven't they should.
ReplyDeleteEvery day I read your comment and see you're backing one of the losing shows...
ReplyDeleteAlso every day I go on the prediction table and see you near the top. Did you just pick all your least favourite shows in the bracket? :P
Out of the 3, I would say that Arrested Development is vastly superior. Hard to believe that Jason Bateman went from that bratty kid on Silver Spoons to such comedic heights.
ReplyDeleteOh ok. xD I just saw it and he looked REALLY small.
ReplyDeleteI think he just knew to pick head over heart lol.
ReplyDeleteIf you have the ION channels they play a ton of Cold Case. A ton.
ReplyDeleteGlee's always around the top ten shows on the site, if not ever at the top. Just checked out the stats and apparently True Blood is the hot show atm :)
ReplyDeleteHm. Maybe I just instinctively blocked out most of the Glee stuff. My bad.
ReplyDeleteDo you think that is because the new season just premiered and most fall shows don't have new season spoilers out yet? Where did you find the stats by the way?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info :) Going to watch a few episodes when I have time.
ReplyDeleteReally? That is such a bummer because I don't get ION. In fact, I'm not sure that I have heard of it. Is it available in America?
ReplyDeleteRe: Nikita, I thought the same at first but it keeps getting better throughout the season and I'd really recommend giving it another chance :)
ReplyDeleteIt is but it might be hard to find. I have DISH and ION is above channel 200 lol.
ReplyDeleteNikita, How I met your mother, FIREFLY!!! and Cold Case!! :)
ReplyDeleteI voted for Nikita of course. It is an amazing show and I am still extremely happy that it got renewed for a second season!
ReplyDeletemy bracket went all wrong when Friends lost.... :/
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely because the new season just premiered...
ReplyDeleteI have access to the site stats so I occasionally pop over to see how various shows/posts are doing.
To fill your curiousity I can tell you the top few from the last month are True Blood, Supernatural & House whilst for example the month before was Gossip Girl, Grey's & House. So it sways depending on what's happening and what's hot at the time.
Well, this is a weird round for me... not so many that I watch...the only ones I DO watch are underdogs by a mile...
ReplyDeleteMy VOTES:
30 ROCK: In Tina Fey we trust. also... "WHERE'S MY SANDWICH!???"
PARKS & REC.: Because even my love of Alyson Hannigan isn't as much as my love for the Pawnee P&R department
FIREFLY: JOSSSSSS WHHHHEEEDDDONNN!!!!
Battlestar Galactica; mostly for the bracket...as I have about the same experience/opinion of both.
Arrested Development had me on the floor for hours at a time at the beginning of this year. Great great show.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Parks & Rec. is just an outstanding show.
ReplyDeleteOh sh*t. My bracket is done for.
ReplyDeleteParks and Recreation is one of my favorite shows, so I voted for that. But I'm going to have to start watching How I Met Your Mother, since everyone likes it so much. And 30 Rock has given me lots of laughs, so even though I'm in an anti-Tracy Morgan mode, I voted for it.
ReplyDeleteLucky... lol I like statistics like that.
ReplyDeleteThe series uses such expensive/high profile music that if they were to be available on DVD they would have to cut out the music and put in something else, so I think it's better just to watch reruns on tv... (That's what I have read anyway.)
ReplyDeletefirefly ftw! firefly forever! (and also nikita) :P
ReplyDeleteThe gore is bad but not as bad as decapitating a horse on Game of Thrones. O.o
ReplyDeleteIf you can watch GoT you can watch TWD.
The episode where they have to take the guts of a zombie and rub it all over themselves it probably the grossest part to me...
I have heard of it. Don't have it, but I see commercials for it I think.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm surprised about Supernatural because we are only getting new spoilers now. However we are a chatty bunch, for good or bad, even when there isn't anything new to discuss.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Wilson. I find the stats fascinating because it says a lot about TV and the online experience. Generally we only see who's commenting and that doesn't tell the whole story.
That horse thing on GoT was horrible, but I suppose I can just look away during the really bad parts :P Like the one you're talking about there, which sounds vile!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. It was bad enough when iTunes took out the classic rock in Supernatural for season 1 (seriously how can you watch Skin without In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida or Metallicar without Back in Black), but Cold Case without the music would be a travesty. Reruns are just another reason to hail TNT.
ReplyDeleteit breaks my heart that Parks and Rec is losing to HIMYM, despite being a fan of both shows, although I must say I expected it. But HIMYM has been on a lot longer, that's my justification and I'm sticking to it! But I love them both, argh!
ReplyDeleteoh, dislike. P&R should win, every time, always!
ReplyDeletebut alas, I do see where your frustration lies my friend.
Voted P&R because NOTHING can surpass my undying love for Amy Poehler, not even my incredibly strong obsession with NPH.
ReplyDeleteI'll take your advice on that and give the first few episodes a watch. Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear that :) Hope you enjoy it, and just remember that most shows take a few episodes to really get going.
ReplyDelete30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Firefly and Battlestar Galactica.
ReplyDelete1. 30 Rock : I love this show. It is less funny than The Office, it is not as groundbreaking as Community, the writing is less sharp than Parks and Rec but still, I would never miss an episode. Granted, season 3 and 4 weren't exactly as good as the first two but the 5th season may have been their best season yet. 30 has never been bad though, I always smile while watching it. Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin rock, the dialogues are just great (the plots may be weak sometimes but there are always plenty of amazing lines). Nikita had a great first season but it can't match 30 Rock.
2. Parks and Recreation : One of my favourites comedies as well. In fact, it is literally the # 1 comedy of the 2010/2011 season. I did not think season 2 could have been topped, and clearly I was wrong. Amy Poehler is charismatic and funny, Ron Swanson is my hero, Rob Lowe's character makes me laugh just by being on screen, I'm always amazed to see what Tom comes up with, etc. Perfecty cast, subtle and smart writing, a mockumentary style that I love. I think Parks & Rec is currently better than The Office, and actually just like The Office I had a hard time with season 1, that I did not find funny in both shows. But then they both became some of my favourites comedies.
I used to like HIMYM, seasons 2 and 3 were extremely funny (not a big fan of season 1, surprisingly). But since then, the show has gone downhill. It's been 3 seasons that HIMYM is bad. I don't care about the Mother stuff (like the writers), I just want to watch a funny sitcom and we're mostly far from it for a while. Even Barney can't save the show from being lame now. So my vote went to Parks and Rec.
3. Firefly : Firefly may be overrated but that doesn't mean it's a bad show, quite the opposite. I like very much the western/sci-fi mix Joss Whedon has done here. It's not his best show but it's a highly recommendable entertainment.
4. Battlestar Galactica : To me, this show is a landmark in television history. For once we get to have grown-up, complex, serialized sci-fi, beautifully filmed (I love the shaky-cam style) and acted. And this show probably has the best soundtrack of any TV show (the composer, Bear McCreary, is a genius). BSG is not my favourite show but it surely is in my top 15, and it may be the best remake ever done on TV (well it is the best as far as I'm concerned).
Haha. I must admit I usually do watch more than one episode of a show before I write it off completely. There's only a couple of others that I've done that for. Maybe I should rethink those as well :P
ReplyDeleteAfter I nearly made the mistake of giving up on TVD because it started badly, I now try to at least watch a few episodes before making my mind up. Yes you should :) What shows are you thinking of?
ReplyDeleteOh crap, I didn't even remember that. *shudders* thanks for reminding me of that travesty. Skin's music was some of the best of the entire series for the uses at least.
ReplyDeleteI don´t watch either Nikita nor 30 Rock, so I didn`t vote in the first poll. My votes in the other polls were HIMYM, Firefly and BSG
ReplyDeleteNikita
ReplyDeleteHIMYM
Cold Case
HIMYM, 30 Rock, Firefly, BSG
ReplyDeleteNikita, HIMYM, JAG, and Battlestar Galactica get my vote!
ReplyDeleteJoss Whedon is a Gunious love all of his shows.
ReplyDeleteVote Firefly!
Did VD get better because I watched season 1 because of the Best Show contest last year but it was too soapy, emoangsty melodrama for me? Plus, Stefan irked me with a passion. One thing for it - it was vastly superior to the Twilight trainwreck so I know people who compare the two haven't seen it.
ReplyDeleteJoss Whedon is a genius but Firefly never did anything for me. I have a theory that it is best loved by those that fought against its cancellation and who got the movie made. Are you in that category or did you like me watch it in one setting?
ReplyDeleteIt got so much better. The first 6 or so episodes of S1 were beyond cheesy but it really picks up after that. In my opinion, it improves with every single episode and season 2 is especially good. The show manages to fit more twists and turns into each episode than most shows do in an entire season, and many of the characters have grown so much over the two seasons. The acting is vastly underrated (Nina Dobrev deserves an award) and as for Stefan, just wait till the end of season 2.
ReplyDeleteHa I get what you mean, Summer looks like a little kid next to Nathan!
ReplyDeleteI only watched Firefly for the first time about two years ago, and I absolutely loved it. (Loved it to the point that I attended a Joss Whedon convention last year to meet Alan/Wash and Jewel/Kaylee)
ReplyDeleteI will agree on the Joss is a genius part though.
same
ReplyDeleteNIKITA all the way!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen the others except for two episodes of JAG, those that served as the pilot for NCIS. Didn't really like it.
I've heard a lot about Firefly. Still don't know what it's about though.
Can't wait for round 2!
Im already scared for tomorrows vote CHUCK vs CASTLE will be very tough
ReplyDeleteI votes how I met your mother because I absolutely loved the first 4 seasons and never really watched parks and recreation.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I haven't watched any of the ther shows, Ive heard great things about both Nikita and firefly so my votes went to them
Lastly, I voted battlestar galactica, for my dad :) he likes those shows. And I have no connection to cold case.
Excited for round 2 starting tomorrow. This is gonna start getting very exciting :)
A University girl did a research on what draw more online crowds this spring...don't know if you saw it :)
ReplyDeletewait! isn't Cold Case in dvd? OMG , that's totally wrong!! :( I missed a lot of episodes and I thought, well, I can always buy the dvds... and I live in Spain so I have no chance to see it (legally)... :S
ReplyDeleteNikita, Parks (since HIMYM doesn't deserve to continue, and I don't even watch Parks), Firefly, Galactica for me!
ReplyDeleteDahne I believe actually watched all of season 1 (right, Dahne?) I can understand why Dahne would say there's too much melodrama, as I myself watch the show halfway for the outright ridiculous teen drama to laugh at it, along with the awful product placement. But season 2 (starting with the last season from season 1) was just really good...Still ungodly teen-angst driven, but good good twists, and Katherine imo is a good character, and her introduction to the storyline really shook things up...
ReplyDeleteIt's weird because the story is pretty good, it's just the dynamics between some characters is like "Seriously? Someone please just get this emo bunch a tissue?" but outside of that, it seemed like every episode had something shockingly good that happened in it (felt like a season finale every week, actually...) And then Lauren Cohan's character's sideplot was one of the best of the season for bringing ACTUAL drama to the show and sort've putting the usual crap on hold. lol
I didn't... you have a link.
ReplyDeleteI'll see if I can find it back...
ReplyDeleteI remember one of the main point was pretty much what you just said, that's why I thought of that article when reading you :P it's pretty much scifi that attract online community cause of the univers that create around a scifi show, a very own world to the show and the people around it :) Like that's pretty much why according to her research the try to make big conventions (lie the sci-fi ones) for cops shows or normal family show failed :)
OK, I am trying not to puke during this zombie chopping scene. This is definitely the worst gore of the season? Because i'm not sure I can take this show if it isn't. VERY VERY GROSS!
ReplyDeleteIs it the one where Supernatural fans were found to be the most passionate fandom online? I think I have a link to that one. It was on TV Overmind I think.
ReplyDeleteI remember that one too but it wasn't the one I'm searching ^^; It was like 10 pages long scan in a pdf formatUnless the article was based on those 10 pages :P
ReplyDeleteSadly, no DVD. I've been on the e-mail me if it's going to become a DVD on Amazon for 3 years now. Still, no e-mail. I've given up hope that it will ever come out.
ReplyDeleteYes, I did watch all of VD. I wanted to give it a fair shot before harping on it. I remember that Katherine was a nice twist, but was in it for like a minute. Glad she stayed. I also liked Cohan in Supernatural so that's a plus. Not sure if I'm up for too much teen drama even if there are twists though. You know how I hate the crying and the emoangsting.
ReplyDeletePlease don't let JAG and Cold Case win. Battlestar Galactica and Firefly are two of the best shows to ever be made.
ReplyDeleteBattlestar Galactica and Firefly ftw!!!!I love Whedon shows!!!!
ReplyDeleteSame here, exactly.
ReplyDelete:( that's bad...
ReplyDeletePlenty of people have told me to give VD more of a chance than I did originally, which was one episode, but even after watching the first few episodes, (i am aware you said below that it gets better after about 6) it just didn't appeal to me.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I only watched the first episode of Covert Affairs, and didn't go any further. Same with Body of Proof. and The Protector's only had two episodes out so far, but I only watched the first then wrote it off.
I'm sure there's more, but I can't really think of them off the top of my head. haha.
I watched Firefly in one setting like you did, but I loved it. It got me hooked right off the bat. I fell in love with the characters. and even watched the movie straight after I finished the series box set. There was just something really unique about the show in my eyes.
ReplyDeleteI do like your theory though. I doubt I'm as much of a 'die hard fan' as the people who were fighting for it when it was around.
and, I agree with everyone who said "Joss Whedon is a genius."
Katherine is in it a lot more in S2, and Nina Dobrev has been doing an amazing job with her two roles on the show.
ReplyDeleteAll i'm gonna say is that you're missing out on a really great show by not watching VD :)
ReplyDeleteThere really is no other show like it, it was so original and unique. Really wish it'd been on longer.
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly_(TV_series) :)
ReplyDeleteIt's an amazing show that you should definitely get around to watching at some point!
I watched all 6 episodes of Walking Dead now and for me the answer is it sucks big time! It was either too gory or frankly too boring for me. Half the time I wanted to vomit and the other times I was fighting sleep. The pilot was decent but gory. The season finale was the best episode because it had 15 minutes of nice solid action in it and a good guest star. Mostly though it sucked. But that's just my opinion. Critics seem to disagree. The zombies are really cool looking though.
ReplyDeleteNikita, HIMYM, Firefly & BSG.
ReplyDeleteEasy choices today :)
