Rant of the Week - Enough of this Reality TV Bullshit (Poll)

2 Jun 2011

Hi all, not sure if I will actually make this a regular column but it's something I might.

Well for my first Rant of the Week I want all lovers of GOOD TV SHOWS to support this and get behind me.

For so long fans of good TV shows have had to suffer and watch their beloved shows and characters get cancelled, while all those crappy Reality shows keep on churning out the same garbage. I've had enough of X-Factor, The Voice, American Idol, or some other so called talent shows. Enough with with Extreme Makeovers, Keeping up with the Kardasians (seriously who watches that?) and all the other untalented famous for being famous stooges. And how about some of these little gems Basketball Wifes (Seriously WTF!) BAchelour Pad, Karaoke Battle USA (why not the world?), Million Dollar Decorators (Yeah right, really putting the real in Reality there),The World According to Paris (yep a billionaire heiress is just like my life), Ice Loves Coco (well good for him, I like Chocolate), Exteme Chef (If there was a risk of death it might be interesting!), and the list goes on and on and on.... What's next, Extreme I think I can Dance with Real Housewives on Ice? or Extreme Amish Lapdancing Girls.

I for one have had enough, what about you?

So here is a call to arms for anyone who is serious about their TV Shows and want an end to this drivel that is Reality TV.

So here is my call to arms if you are up for the challenge?

1) Stop Watching ALL reality TV period. Simple enough? Great lets move on.
2) If you visit TV sites that cover Reality TV Shows, Stop Visiting Them. Don't go back. Let us know in the comments which sites you've decided to stop going to. I'll tell you my ones. E!Online, TV Guide, BuddyTV, TVOvermind, Zap2IT. These sites all help promote this crap. Stop following them on Twitter you twits!
3) Do you follow on twitter any of these so called "tv experts" like ausiello, kristin, matt whatever his name is? You do? Well UNFOLLOW them NOW! Let us know in the comments who else we should avoid.
4) Never, I repeat NEVER, click on any links to any Reality TV shows that you see on the net, if these sites see that people arn't interested in those posts, maybe they'll post more about the shows we love and as a result help promote YOUR shows.

So who agrees with me? Vote in the poll with what you're going to do. Sound off in the comments.

I have great faith in SpoilerTV readers so don't let me down here!

Please let as many people know about this post by tweeting, facebook liking, google plus oneing(is that word). Let everyone know and get them voting and lets put an end to this Reality TV Bullshit

Note - Anyone voting I love reality TV shows, let me know your IP Address and I'll get DarkUFO to ban you from here :)

  1. I stopped watching "reality" tv shows a while ago. Soooooo sick of them. I don't follow any of the ppl. you mentioned on Twitter and as far as I know I don't frequent any sites that support reality tv shows. I am behind you all the way. When I think of all the good tv shows that get cancelled or don't get picked up and all the reality shows that come back season after season it really ticks me off!

  2. Good for you Meg! Could not agree more with you. Good to have you on the team!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Never really watched reality TV. Just a few shows when it started like The Real World or some local formats, but I stopped a long time ago and have no interest in this crap.

    ReplyDelete
  4. That's very cool! Don't change :)

    ReplyDelete
  5. I don't follow reality TV garbage much anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Indeed it does.

It feels good to get that rant of my chest :)

  7. All 4 steps. The first one is rather easy as I don't live in the US but am just as opposed to those reality shows (and also, most US reality shows have a Polish version and they suck even more:/ ). I love a good tv-show and was furious as hell to see that FOX can only put  few shows on the airs because not only do they only air from  8 till 10 they also have X-Factor, American Idol and other crap taking up most of the schedule. The Chicago Code was one of the best new shows this year and look what happened:/
Sorry for the rant, got a bit angry towards the end;)

    ReplyDelete
  8. The ONLY reality show I have ever watched is The Amazing Race, and I'm sorry, I can't give it up. Can't we be allowed ONE?

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'll let you off :) But if you're favourite show gets cancelled don't come running to me lol ;)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Angry is good pawel, that's how I feel!

    ReplyDelete
  11. i love this idea.. i am all for banning reality tv.. except so you think you can dance.  real dancers doing amazing dances.. i do love some sytycd.. but i don't follow on twitter or surf for it or watch any other 'reality' show.. oh, and i do not watch the auditions.. boo on that drama.

    ReplyDelete
  12. :) Ok, we'll give you one show!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm not sure I would lump all competition shows in with Reality TV. I do see your point though.

I posted a similar rant when the most recent daytime TV cancellations were announced. I don't watch soaps. I never have and I probably never will. However, replacing those shows with more reality TV junk is bad news for anyone who loves television. So many great actors, writers, etc get their start in daytime TV. Now those opportunities are gone and what do we have to show for it? More crap 'reality' TV.

  14. at least it's a summer show.. doesn't compete with anything i would fight for.. if it was on in the fall.. forgetaboutit.  ;o)

fyi, if you ever decide to form a mob & go after American Idol, i have my pitchfork and fire ready to go.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yep, but those shows cause the shows I like to cancelled and I personally can't stand them. It's a slippery slope. If we get rid of Reality shows, then the networks will just fill it up with Compeitions :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Deal! I'll have a large hammer ready!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I hate reality tv too, but this seems kinda out there.
I don't really watch any reality tv at all so I guess I'll do step 1 since I always have done step 1.

    ReplyDelete
  18. What frightens me, and I mean terrifies me to the very core of my being, is that AMC have commissioned two reality tv programs.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Bob, that's very true, and it's a sad day when a quality network like AMC are going down that route. I fear we'll never see another Rubicon, The Killing etc again.

    ReplyDelete
  20. "Out there" is exactly what I'd like to see in a weekly rant column lol. It's fun and seems to generate a lot of comments.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Don't worry I have a few ideas up my sleeve :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Generally, I don't particularly mind that there is reality tv, but if the Killing is not renewed because of some idiotic show like American Idol I will personally fly to America and shoot the executive producer in the face.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't watch Reality Television.  In fact I don't watch most of what seems to be so popular on this site and find certain fan bases to be way more annoying than any reality tv show ever came close to being, but to each his own and live and let live and all that.   Who am I to suggest that something is stupid and should be banished from existence just because I don't happen to find it interesting?  I did vote for #1 though because I already don't watch.

    ReplyDelete
  24. i hate most reality shows, but master chef AUS and Amazing race are alright. and dont think i am being generous, i really really hate reality tv!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I hate Reality TV shows with you too!  But I use Zap2it to see what GOOD shows are on TV at a given time of the day I don't know what is on, if it helps I'm not on it more than a few seconds.

And here's hoping we can bring down the era of Reality TV!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I made this pledge to myself a couple of years ago and have weaned myself off DWTS and Project Runway. I was already over American Idol. But there are certain shows that I like, and some educate me. Cooking contests are sometimes downright interesting (Bobby Flay, for example). As long as they are not using the darndest ingredients that I never would use, I find the judge's comments interesting. I used to love Designed to Sell when it was on and learned a lot, and I like Design Star.

So, I believe one has to be judicious.

if selected with care, reality TV can be oka

  29. Every time I've stopped the remote on a reality show, I end up feeling slimed. They show me the worst of people, how to be rude and awful, and everything that's wrong with America. I'm proud to say that I've never seen Kate and her 8, any teen mom shows, any real housewife show, any tattoo-motorcycle-pawnshop show. I just can't stomach them--any of them--and I'll read a book. Give me some well-written, entertaining, scripted TV any day.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Amen sister! You're preaching to the converted :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm doing 1,2,4 ALL THE WAY! Reality tv is soooooooo annoying

    ReplyDelete
  32. I HATE reality tv shows. They make all of our countrymen look like selfish, drunken assholes. So I'm all on board for this. If you need people for a mob of some type, please count me in!

But do I really have to give up Ausiello? I like reading his hints for scripted shows... i don't think he really does stuff for reality except recaps really.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm with you on boycotting reality shows. They're dumbing down the nation. Reality TV characters are blowing up their lives just to be on TV. They're taking away jobs from good actors, script writers, and directors.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ok,, but you have to promise to ignore his Reality Tweet :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well said Josie, glad to have you on board.

    ReplyDelete
  36. mmm i can't take any of the steps. i've never watched any reality tv shows :D

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm with ya 100% I hate that reality TV bullshit always gets my shows cancelled

    ReplyDelete
  38. What really sucks is when great shows get cancelled after one or two seasons, whereas reality junk can go on for years and years.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well, so far AMC doesn't go down quite this road and so far I doubt that they would come up with something like American Idol or Dancing With the Stars.
As far as I know one of their reality programs is about advertising firms, so this something they are doing because of Mad Men. And I don't know if it got picked up a dit's the second program, but some time ago I read about a reality format AMC was planning about Freddie Roach, a boxing coach who is fighting Parkinson's disease. Which sounds at least like "quality" reality TV compared to most other crap. And I don't fear that AMC will pull the plug on one of their quality shows for a reality show.

Can't say I'm happy about this development, but looking at it financially I totally understand AMC. To make money they have to expand and these days there's almost no way around these reality formats.
I keep saying that the success of reality TV (along with the incredible rise of sharing dumb and unnecessary information on facebook, twitter & co) is one indicator of the intellectual decay of our society. Sadly, I don't see a way out of this...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thanks for the website and I would use it for shows that are new but I also like to know what else is on at like noon or something.  I'll figure something out because I want to help to destroy this Reality TV phase.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I make an exception for the more "real" reality series like American Pickers, Deadliest Catch and Out of the Wild etc. I don't really watch any reality competition show regularly, but I do check out SYTYCD as friends and family watch it.

I quit going to those reality TV 'spoiler' sites long ago since they seem to cater to the lowest common denominator..... just like most reality TV shows.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree completely. Many series don't make the networks any money worth mentioning. If having a few reality shows on their network allows a network to make some quality drama series they otherwise would not have been able to afford, I am all for it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I watch survivor and have from the beginning, but this year even that goes!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Dont like it dont watch it!

I watch Strictly and BGT every year and enjoy. People can watch what they want.So called 'Great' shows get cancelled because no one wants to watch them and sometimes that's because some people would rather watch reality TV and that's their right. Maybe those 'great' shows aren't that great?!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Very well written. I've never watched any of these shows but they're getting harder to dodge around. The t.v. listings are showing more of them all the time. At first I figured they'd be some short lived thing. Unfortunately the opposite has happened. It's a sad time indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  46. While I agree with the heart of the post, I feel that reality TV represents something that is generally to a documentary what a tabloid is to a newspaper, but can occasionally find itself inching towards documentary. To condemn ALL reality television might rule out the occasional gem.

If we're talking about the lesser quality (but high ratings) threats of talent competitions (X-Factor, American Idol, SYTYCD, etc), to the middling quality threats of competition shows (Survivor, Fear Factor, Amazing Race, etc), all the way to things as abhorrent as Jersey Shore or The Osbournes, then absolutely, get them off my television and stop stealing my ratings!

Then you get shows like Jaime Oliver's Food Revolution, which didn't actually have very good ratings, but which attempted to do something good with its reality premise. Sometimes, just sometimes, these shows trickle over into the educational.

Do I need to watch celebrities go to rehab or stupid famous people being stupid and famous, definitely not. Would I mind getting some quality documentaries? Absolutely.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I never watch reality shows so you don't have to convince me of anything.  However, I'm not sure step #2 makes any sense.  Avoiding entire websites seems ineffective as opposed to avoiding the specific pages and articles dedicated to reality TV.

Since web traffic is measured by page views in most instances, avoiding specific pages would send a more direct message.  Avoiding an entire website sends a much more opaque message, if any at all.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Agreed completely. I enjoy websites like EW and TVOvermind because they occasionally have interesting content. I just skip over the crap I don't like. Do I care about the newest season of Jersey Shore, nope, but I love reading articles by Doc Jensen.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Totally with you! There is to much reality TV and none of it is good.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm behind you one hundred and TEN percent, Spoiler Girl! I can't stand reality TV...

    ReplyDelete
  51. hahaha. Nice article...
Thumbs up in agreement from me

    Plus I'm curious what's next?

I don't watch much reality TV besides The Real Housewives of NYC/NJ/Beverly Hills and Jersey Shore (i'm sadly addicted), but I enjoy watching for the entertainment value, especially when normal programming is on haitus for summer or what have you

  55. lostrocks4ever2 June 2011 at 23:03

As long as realty tv shows don't include competition shows like survivor or amazing race I'm behind you 100%. I can't stand any of that crap on tv. I think it's all mindless and pointless and I don't understand how there can possibly be so many of them!!
I don't watch any of those or support them in any way so I'm already doing all four steps

    ReplyDelete
  56. Monthly Moments of Madness?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I never watch reality TV anyway.

ALTHOUGH, even though I never watch it, I have to defend So You Think You Can Dance, as it actually has people on it that know what they're doing and know what they're talking about. It's renowned among dance enthusiasts and experts because of the level of talent showcased and for having judges that actually know what they're talking about (as annoying as one in particular may be).

    ReplyDelete
  58. I don't watch Reality shows to begin with. But I do watch The Soup so I get my weekly dose. Sounds like a good plan.

I loved me some "Rubicon" and AMC crapped on it. A pox on AMC.

  60. pagefortyeight3 June 2011 at 02:03

I don't EVER watch ANY reality shows.  I don't even watch sitcoms anymore. I don't watch Hollywood gossip shows. I just won't support garbage on my TV. How the hell is it possible to get 10 years (and counting) of "American Idol" and only 4.77 seasons of "Alias" or just 40 piddling episodes of SGU? I want to kick somebody's ass.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Reality TV drives me absolutely crazy. It makes me actually angry when people argue with me about them being scripted. They are brainless, boring, and it makes me mad some of the reality stars making millions have like a -50 IQ. Shows that are brilliantly written, acted, directed, etc., actually get way lower ratings than reality TV bullshit. Lastly, I now vomit whenever I see Snookies face.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Love So You Think You can Dance and Project Runway. Hate ****** I follow T****** for the spoilers. Haven't watched any of the dating show crap, and gave up on the entire MTV universe years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Pawn Stars at least gives you a history lesson. There's good and bad within the broad spectrum of "reality" Just as there is with cop shows and Sci Fi.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I would love to say I could quit watching all reality TV, but i cant. I enjoy some, like stuff thats on the discovery channel and OLN. But i HATE all the other kinds of reality TV, especially garbage like jersey shore and  any other crap like that. I would love to see more real tv shows.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I am soooooo damn sick and tired of ALL "reality" tv shows,,,,,

    ReplyDelete
  66. NO WE WON'T!!!!!!!! IT HAS TO STOP PERIOD.

    ReplyDelete
  67. PAWN STARS,  ARE YOU KIDDING ME?  THESE PIGS MONEY FROM YOUR DEMISE AND YOU LOVE THEM FOR IT. IF YOU WANT A HISTORY LESSON READ A BOOK.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Its all crap, reality my backside. Its a show designed to make money and all the sheep watch them. Ifnyou are free thinking and able to read a good book then this rubbish is notmfor you. However there are more brain dead sheep thqn free thinkers so the bullshit keeps getting churned out.
