Question of the Day - Which TV show/s should have ended much earlier than they did? (POLL)

1 Jun 2011

Welcome to another Question of the Day. Today's question comes from @dupinka who asks.

"Which TV show/s should have ended much earlier than they did, or are/were being unnecessarily prolonged?!

Great question.

I'm going to be answering this for shows that are still on the air but feel free in the comments to use shows that have already ended that you feel went on too long.

For me it has to be One Tree Hill, currently just finishing it's 8th season. I think it should have ended after Season 7.

So what about you? Sound off in the comments which show(s) you think have gone on too long or went on too long and why, let us know also when they should have ended.

Vote in the poll below for current shows which are 5 or more seasons into their running life that you think should have ended already. You can vote for up to 3 Shows.

82 comments:

  1. Two And A Half Men definitely. I can't think of any other show at the moment.

Also, both Grey's Anatomy and The Office have been on for seven years, not six.

  2. One Tree Hill for sure. I only watched 1 season and I can't see how they can do 8 season of that shit.
    And Grey's Anatomy, House..
Gossip Girl isn't on the list but I submiting it.

  3. None to be honest, whilst I'm not a fan of procedurals, and CBS comedies continually bore me, just because I don't like them doesn't mean they should be cancelled, hey if they get the ratings someone must like them so they should live on.

  4. The SImpsons definitely should have ended a couple of years ago, it's just not the same show it used to be. South Park isn't as good as it used to be, but at least still has enough funny episodes and moments.
Don't really watch a lot of the mentioned shows (anymore), most procedurals get boring for me after some seasons and I don't really watch any procedural show on a regular basis right now.

  5. I only watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Office, HIMYM, Family Guy and The Simpsons. I've just seen the first season of Weeds, I liked it so I'll come back to this show later this year perhaps.

I still enjoy It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Office and Family Guy :

    - It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is one of the best comedies I've ever seen and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it... granted, I've only seen the first 4 seasons, I don't know about the last two (yet) but so far it's such a treat.

    - Regarding The Office, I have seen every episode available and it is compelling comedy as well, but the last 2 seasons were less inspired and enjoyable than seasons 2, 3 or 5. And yet, as boredom was taking over, the writers woke up in the last third of the 7th season (episodes 7.16 to 7.25) which was outstanding, the show at its best. Michael Scott/Steve Carell's departure clearly gave the writers something great to work with and they provided 10 truly good episodes.

    - Family Guy is very fun too (despite The Cleveland Show and American Dad having better seasons than FG, this season). I have to admit I haven't seen seasons 2 to 7 except a couple of episodes though, so I can't compare to what Family Guy has produced in the past, I'll probably catch up this summer but compared to some other sitcoms it is still very entertaining.

It's been a while since I've been enjoying an episode of HIMYM (seasons 2 and 3 are long gone), now I watch the show because I'm used to it, not because I like it.

I don't even know why I watch The Simpsons anymore, there are tiny good jokes flotting around in each episode but it is overall a very expendable show now, and it's just a habbit I have to watch it.

  6. Only can attest to what I watched.
The Simpsons - Bart has been a kid for my entire adult life.
Law & Order: SUV and CSI equally for the same reason. Need a little variety now and again.

  7. actually seasons 1-4 of OTH were really good, as long as the kids where still in high school. From season 5 it started becoming terribly crappy.

    ReplyDelete
  8. definitely House and Himym.
house season 7 was very disappointing ,specially the finale...
himym is not the same show that it was b4.and its getting worse every episode.
just tell us who the goddamn mother is already !!!!!

  9. It mortally offends me that One Tree Hill is still on the air when every single show I've ever watched has never lasted more than 6 seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I watch "CSI", CSI:Miami", "Bones","House MD" and "The Closer".
My answer: "NONE of them" :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Should have already ended: The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, Law & Order, CSI (all of them) , One Tree Hill (after season five), Two and a Half Man.
One more season and then stop, please: Desperate Housewives, House, Grey's Anatomy.

  12. I personally think Supernatural should have ended after its 5th season finale. Apart from that also HIMYM (even though I still watch it), The Simpsons, One Tree Hill, Family Guy, and all those damn procedurals.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think CSI Miami, but mainly because I can't stand David Caruso:D

House has lost it's magic during the years, storyline gets a bit boring, and with Cuddy leaving it doesn't get stronger.

I dont watch Two and a Half Man, but with that whole thing around Charlie Sheen I think they should rap it up. Dont think Ashton Kutcher is gonna do the show any good.

  14. Thank you for not putting Smallville up there!!  Because it's last few seasons were top notch, (as far as Smallville goes!)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Supernatural should have ended at season five, the last season was terrible - with the exception of Crowley.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The poll is only for current shows, Smallville is over :)

  17. I feel the same way about One Tree Hill, watched a couple of episodes of season 1 and I simply cannot understand how this show has found a way to cheat cancellation every single year... for instance Life UneXpected had some serious potential and I wonder if the ratings were as low as they were because it was aired together with One Tree Hill...

One Tree Hill has gotten terrible. There is either unecessarily drawn out drama, an intense disaster, or every couple on the show (which has the cast all paired up) is completely happy. It should have ended when Lucas and Peyton left or when they all graduated high school. And for those who think Supernatural should have ended with season 5, I disagree. Yes, season 6 wasn't perfect and had a few flaws, but it still delivered a great storyline that came together in the final episodes of the season and had some amazing standout episodes

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think the majority who said Spn should have end after season 5 said that cause Eric say he had a 5 years plan and before Spn was renew for S6 there was some debat about going after Eric's plan or not.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Current shows from the list: 2 1/2 Men, House, and The Office.  I used to be really into Desperate Housewives, then every episode seemed like the same old formula. Should have ended at the end of year 4. Also American Idol. It is so over, and has been for a while.

When I saw the topic, I immediately thought of past shows that I quit before they went off the air. The X-Files was a show about scary alien monsters, until it wasn't. When it got all romancy it turned into a different show, and I gave up.

NYPD Blue. I really loved that show, but then Jimmy Smits wanted out. I heard that Rick Schroder was a good replacement, but I was already gone. When the host goes to bed, the party's over.

ER. Green, Ross, Hathaway--gone? Me too.

Definatley desperate housewives. It's the first show that immediatly came to mind the moment I read te question. I dont understand how that show is still going.
Other shows I think should have Ended are house (which is nothing like what it used to be) 2 and a half men (just gone on for way too long) and how I met your mother.
Don't get me wrong, I love HIMYM but I just font find it funny anymore. It's become more soap opera and drama and less comedy these last few years

  22. One Tree Hill should have ended with Peyton and Lucas and it did 4 me anyway so OTH 4 shure

  24. Whoo, that is two of my questions posted.. I love it! The shows I had in mind when submitting it were House, CSI: LV, Desperate Housewives and also Friends

    ReplyDelete
  25. the x-files, for me!! it was stupid to keep the show going without mulder!
ER too, it run its course in season 7...

    ReplyDelete
  26. For me, it's Bones. I used to be addicted to the show, but it's become so procedural, and their will they/won't they has gotten tired. I say, just hook up and end the show and make room for the spinoff they have.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't know besides "Heroes" I never thought it would have been better if a show had been cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I didn't feel SPN delivered a great storyline or came together at the end.  It was a poorly written and planned out season.  I still can't believe that EK wrote the final episode.  It has some of the cheesiest dialog and Sam's wall breaking seemed like pointless filler for the show.  We didn't learn anything new about Sam, his POV, or what he went through.
    Here's hoping S7 is better!

    ReplyDelete
  29. House should have ended at least 3 years ago. The first three season were the best I've ever seen on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I vote for Family Guy which to me hasn't been good since it was brought back after Season 3, and if you were doing shows that ended I would've voted for Smallville because the last few seasons were terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I feel like L&O SVU has been going on way to long :/
That sound in every episode annoys me lol

    ReplyDelete
  32. With The Office and Two and A Half Men losing their top people, this would have been the right time to end them. If Greys is losing people after next season it will be time to go.

House has been sinking for a couple of seasons.

I gave up on the Simpsons and South Park years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  33. X.Files should have ended with William's birth. Next to that House of course. The last season was just too "much".

I disagree on L&O SVU ... The show was great, last season, great and less great episodes, like every season but without Meloni ....

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would also like to say i'm rooting for the day that American Idol takes a shotgun blast to the face...

    ReplyDelete
  35. As much as like Supernatural it sang its song 2-3 seasons ago. Now it's just a boring soap opera.
I also voted for Law and Order SVU and Two and a Half Men

    ReplyDelete
  36. The biggest one for me would be House. Also voted for Family Guy and CSI Miami.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Good to see someone who is still able to enjoy what we are given !!..

    ReplyDelete
  38. X-files should have ended when Fox and Scully left.

Supernatural should have ended  last year or before.

Weeds is on its last legs.

House should have ended after Season Four.

Newsradio should have never tried to replace Phil Hartman with Jon Lovitz!

    ReplyDelete
  39. OTH for sure . I guess teen shows are only good when the kids are in high school after the show starts to suck .

    ReplyDelete
  40. The only shows on here I still watch are NCIS, Bones - both only occasionally, and Supernatural is still much watch tv for me. None of the others have kept my interest or loyalty. They've either never grabbed me from the start, or I've gotten bored within the first 3 seasons. I've only ever watched One Tree Hill once and that was enough for me. House started off great, but once they fell back on the tired old 'will they won't they' crap I was gone. Thank god Supernatural still manages to surprise me. All we need now is th get rid of the angels and we're good to go for a few more seasons yet.

    ReplyDelete
  41. As for non scripted shows,  I would add American Idol to the list.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Don't get me wrong, I'm a die-hard fan of One Tree Hill, but with the last two seasons it is not so OTH anymore.. The sixth season finale was just perfect as a series finale, when Lucas and Peyton left.. Season 7 was better than 8..  But I think these two seasons had become crap particular to the fact that they didn't know if they were coming back the next year or not.. Now they know it's the final season (9) they can go full throttle and maybe get Lucas and Peyton back..

    ReplyDelete
  43. ...Project Runway, America's Next Top Model.....

    ReplyDelete
  44. One Tree Hill should've ended the second Chad Michael Murray left

  45. I'm sorry but creative work needs to jump out at you from the time, the time slot comes on,right on through to the first break,it has to have been met with days of intense interest,so much so that your body and mind are stiffff from tightness, your jaw bone locks up when ever the teaser comes to mind. And then, and then the long awaited event has arrived,he (the consumer) yells out in disgust having counted the minutes away from the previous shows ending noncommercials and all of a sudden it gets quiet, quiet like you hoped there would be.Where is it, your on edge, your grabbing guides and news papers you'r shouting it should be on loudly in your head and then puff like waiving a magic wand your eyes meet the TV screen your pupils open as large as they can, as if darkness has come but it's your inner you not wanting to miss any part of your long awaited new friend The actors click, the script clicks it all goes well together like you hoped it would. The Omnipotents of the show will be with you week after week after week.
Man I could do this stuff for a living, any body interested?   Ken Justice   714-869-1395

  46. I chose The Simpsons, NCIS and One Tree Hill. Nuff said.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I kinda agree with you about SPN they destroyed it when they made Cas go bad. I'll never forgive them for that.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Well out all those I only currently watch one show, and that Grey's Anatomy and I think it should end next season. I think all the storyline are set to end already. I don't know what else can they do with the characters. Callie and Arizona are marry and happy with a baby.  MerDer is marry with marry people's problem but they can resolve it which according to Shonda Rhimes they will. Cris and Owen are marry, they should stay together have the baby. Mark and Lexie should just get together. They can bring back Lucy for an episode or two for Alex. Jackson and April should just get together. Teddy has her husband Henry.  They already did a musical which is one nail in its coffin, most of the characters have been in life threatening situations. There is not need to prolong it pass next season.

That said I used to watch Desperate Housewives, but got bored, I think it should've ended before they did the time jump. Used to watch One Tree Hill, also got bored and frustrated and I stopped watching before they all graduated from High School, it also should end ASAP. Weeds should also end, I am surprise that it hasn't end, it ridiculous now.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yes, and it wasn't even anyone's fault at Newsradio. It's just that you couldn't watch it without thinking of the tragedy :(

    ReplyDelete
  50. OTH-should have ended when CMM left
Grey's-hit it's creative peak a few seasons ago
Desperate Housewives-again hit its creative peak a few years ago

If I could vote for a 4th it's be SUPERNATURAL because as much as I have loved it and am invested in Sam and Dean the show has hit and surpassed its creative peak (probably at the end of season 4) now it seems like the writers new and old just cant be bothered in actually telling an interesting an cohesive story about two brothers who hunt the supernatural but instead spend episode after episode thinking up ways to be clever/different. Its all very well doing META episodes and what not but those should come along with a solid storyline. Also Sam and Dean's problems have started to become a little soap opera-ish. I cant remember the last time Dean wasn't all self pitying and depressed or Sam didn't have yet another reason to feel bad about himself. If they don't want to loose me as a viewer next season I suggest they get back to what made this show great-two brothers hunting things and saving people. Let them have a little fun along the way, talk to each other and actually work on getting over their issues. I want to actually look forward to tuning in every week not dread what melodrama I'm going to be subjected to next. Sort it out people.

sorry for the rant but I just really want to enjoy my show again.

  51. "Bart has been a kid for my entire adult life."

Ha!  That made me laugh.  Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm excited about MegaloCas.  The angel storyline was really dragging so for me it was either kill Cas or make him evil.  I think this new twist has a lot of potential.

    ReplyDelete
  53. wtf supernatural should never end you queer baits

    ReplyDelete
  54. Absolutely with X-Files.  When your main characters go it's beyond time to end it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. What you said about Weeds got me thinking, the season three finale was one of the most perfect season finales ever, with Nancy getting rid of her old life and such, that could have easily have been a series ender.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Sam did a looooottttt of bad thing in season 4, and he was able to redeem himself. Why is everyone assuming right from the start that Cass is destroy forever? Give him a chance

    ReplyDelete
  57. Sunny gets better with age...

    ReplyDelete
  58. Why is Family Guy on this list? Such sacrilege.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Seriously? Have you seen the mannequin episode?

And don't get me started on that alpha nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  60. If Smallville was up there, I'd bet it'd have the most votes xD

    ReplyDelete
  61. I love all of my shows' concepts. There is no surprise here...

    ReplyDelete
  62. Seriously, how can anyone still watch South Park? It was funny and edgy when it first came out, now it's  just annoying and stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  63. The Simpsons isn't allowed to end until I die. It's as old as I am and will always be my favourite show (along with Lost) even if I don't watch it consistently anymore just because when it was good it was ~*BRILLIANT*~. I've rewatched the first ten seasons' episodes at least 200 times each. At LEAST! :P

    ReplyDelete
  64. Even though I can pick three that I haven't seen that I think should have ended, I'll pick with the ones I have watched.
The Simpsons because even though it still has some funny moments, it just isn't the same. Even when it's still funny, it's just been recycled over and over again.
The Office with this season, won't be the same without Michael
And Sunny. While I do enjoy the show, it's all the same, imo.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Just like the season finale of Arli$$ the year before it ended (he realizes that his friends mean more than profits) would have made a better series ender than the one they used (his friend dies sending him into a midlife crisis of sorts; which causes him to explore some lost mine in a ghost town)...

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree :)
But when I read people who are judging wether a show should end or not, it saddens me

    ReplyDelete
  67. Of all of those, the only one I still follow is Supernatural. The writing is still good, the story lines are still original, and and they still keep you guessing.  They may make me angry at times, but I never know what's coming.  I like that.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Actually, the poll uses current shows but the author said to feel free to mention shows that have already ended but you may have felt went on too long.

    ReplyDelete
  69. You can't base OTH on only watching a few episodes. That being said, it should have ended when they wrote Lucas and Peyton off the show 3 years or so ago. The show has been going downhill ever since.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Maybe you should reconsider your show choices then...

    ReplyDelete
  71. I like it when they judge a show they don't even watch. THAT is what saddens me.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I totally agree with you on OTH. Season 5 was wrapped up so nicely and then they brought it back. The whole premise of the show was the brothers. Then okay so they kept going for two more season and at the end of last season they wrapped it up pretty good with everyone so happy. Thought FINALLY its over. Then nope, let's bring it back!! I am actually scared on how they are going to write this season...

    ReplyDelete
  73. Amen! :D lol

    ReplyDelete
  74. CSI has been on for 11 years, not 10.  CSI Miami is 2 years behind CSI LV.  And as far as shows that should have ended: all three CSIs, House, Family Guy and The Simpsons.  The rest of them I can't judge because I don't watch them.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think the only thing holding up OTH right now is Brooke

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yeah, OTH isn't quite OTH after season 4, and without Lucas and Peyton seson 7 was just crap.

    ReplyDelete
  77. HIMYM - I think it's time we found out who the mother is

    ReplyDelete
  78. Definitely One Tree Hill.. The show just doesn't work that well after Burton and Murray left. Seen about 5 seasons of Grey's. Then it became incredible borring. LOVE Supernatural, NCIS, HIMYM, It's always sunny, Family Guy, The Simpsons and South Park. And I'm looking forward to get started with The Office, Weeds and Bones

    ReplyDelete
  79. Definitely Law & Order SUV it's been on way to long and it is 1/15/2012 that i am answering these questions.
Simpsons,The Closer, and Desperate Housewives but this is there last year....

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think OTH should have ended when CMM left... it begin to suck after that! and despite the fact that i don't like how Sam story line turn out, i still find SPN very entertaining, but  i think it's time to end before it's ruined.
