  1. *Passes out Epinephrine/Adrenaline needles and Kleenex out where needed*

    Dark wings... Dark words...

I've said it before, but it bares repeating... OMG I LOVE THE CREDITS AND THEME!
This week we get to see The Twins even...

Every week I am impressed by an actor and have a new 'favorite' actor, this week it's Conleth Hill!  That scene in the dungeons was worthy of analysis at an acting school!

OR maybe it's David Bradley as Filch.. .erm I mean Walder Frey. As an actor, he is about the most definitive crotchety old man you can find. He is to angry, annoyed and aged as James Cosmo (Lord Commander Jeor Mormont) is to weathered, imposing and aged!
Loved him complaining about too many children and grandchildren piling up as he remarries to a 15 year old.... Who knows how many wives he has had now.

Or maybe it's Peter Vaughan as Maester Aemon!?  IF Jon needs advice from a more wise person who understands his unique situation he can do no better than listening to Aemon! A Targaryen? Wow!

    The Wooden Stick:
Not a fan at all of what they have done to the Dothraki storyline! In the books Drogo had a gaping wound from battle and a fall off his horse... not standing against an arakh on purpose. They combined two different scenes into one and used the lesser injury to be his fatal wound? Not liking it.

Last week Dany had a swimsuit model's waist and now she is 6 months pregnant from the looks of it. It's like the producers just recalled she should be growing and showing and jumped her from first trimester to third in one episode and seemingly overnight!

Jorah had his fight, which wasn't bad actually, but then he sheathed his sword and it was clean. After a face and neck gash like that I would expect some blood or flesh on it.

Sansa happy to see her father thinking she had saved him and then shocked at what happened..... They cut off the wrong Stark head!

    The Castle Forged Steel:
The Stark scenes in the Riverlands were nice! Robb is stepping up and showing his strength and willing to make some tough choices. Choices his sister may not like and his father may not have made.
Capturing hte Kingslayer was quite the  coup and an impressive victory to put some fear in his future opponents!

Tywin v Tyrion round 2 was awesome. I love the dynamic between them! Any scene with Dinklage is awesome! He can be comical and commanding in the same breath... damned impressive actor!

    The Valyrian Steel:
All the aforementioned scenes with Varys, Walder Frey and Maester Aemon.

How awesome was the Tyrion speech to his "army"? Halfman! Halfman! Halfman! and then.... he's out! Ha! Great humor! Then seeing the hill tribes beat every man to death so enthusiastically as Tyrion says "Good to see them getting along!" I rolled... HA!

Seeing Arya's reaction to the news of her father's public trial and his execution was terrible, but so impressive! The way they used the camera spinning to show add to the disorientating trauma... BRILLIANT!

Love Bronn and Tyrion together trying to come up with what game to play! I would want to hang out with  Bronn at a party. He may be a mercenary sellsword, but he has fun!
Tyrion running through the common stripper-isms and being wrong... and very puzzled!
A very nice introduction of Shae and a very good recounting of his past marriage trauma.
When a German porn star turned actress is cast as a prostitute does she complain about type casting? I wonder....

  2. Adding HBO stills from tonight's episode and one sneak peak at next week... Enjoy

  3. Agreed on many points! Will post a more detailed set of thoughts later, but for now, I need to deal with the plot in Essos.

The tiny wound that caused the Khal his sickness was ridiculous. Yes, it's implied that Dany getting the witch woman to heal him is what caused the wound to fester, but fuuuu, what a stupid little wound. In the novel, she puts some ointment in it and it itches so much that The Khal literally rips the skin of his chest. THIS causes him to catch a fever. I like Jorah. I like Dany. I don't like what's happening to her story.

On that note, Bronn and Tyrion are the best ever XD. Loved Peter Dinklage's heartfelt backstory. Also, Arya's look at the end of the episode was devastating. For anyone who doesn't know, the man who has her is a man of the night's watch.

  4. Hard to watch the last scenes with Arya again. I'm still shocked and annoyed HBO did NOT nominate Maisie for the Emmy Awards.

One factor that is or will be lost from the books is Yoren "rescuing" Arya.....
In the series he is jovial and almost charismatic in fact. In the books Yoren he is stopped, old, greasy, with lice-ridden hair and he has the sour smell of stale piss... downright creepy and sinister. In the books this mean and creepy, foul-smelling man is almost accosting Arya more than playing a sympathetic hero like in the episode. It made for an even MORE traumatic event if that is possible. Like out of the frying pan and into the fire.

  5. I expected Ned to be killed off ever since Sean Bean was cast in another show, but I would have never thought it would happen before the season finale and in such a way. He gave up his honor, confessed to a crime he didn't commit and yet he was still punished.
I hope Sansa learned a lesson and won't trust Joffrey & the Lannisters from now on.

Great finally seeing David Bradley appear. Almost forgot that he was cast a while ago. Arya certainly won't be happy to hear that she was promised to one of his sons. Robb also didn't look too happy and Theon had problems hiding his mischievousness.

Again, the plot at the wall seems a bit disconnected from the rest of the story. But it was interesting to find out another Targaryen is alive. I wonder if this will have an impact on the story later on.

The Dothraki storyline was my least favourite this week. It had its moments in the past, but I'm also a bit unhappy with it every now and then. And I actually can't really believe that such a wound would cause Drogo to die.
At least there was a suspense-packed cliffhanger. Have no idea what will happen next, but I expect either Drogo or Rhaego to die. But either way I think Dany will be facing serious trouble.

Most entertaining story was almost of course Tyrion's. Playing a GoT version of "I never", being knocked out before the fight, having some great scenes with Bronn and Shae (she looked so familiar that I had to look her up and it's Sibel Kekilli, an actress I know from several German films); it's always a pleasure watching the imp.

Was a bit surprised that they didn't show the fight, kind of like in Rome. But after last week I expected some big war scenes.
Anyway, how the hell did they manage to capture Jaime without anyone noticing? At least they now have some leverage against the Lannisters. But with Ned gone, how will this play out?

  6. I think Tyrion will continue to be the most fun storyline for you... I think GRRM looks at Tyrion as himself on the page honestly. And maybe Arya as his newlywed wife?

I was awaiting the Battle of Whispering Woods with Jaime cutting down 10 stark men trying to get o Robb and kill him, but in the end I didn't miss it honestly. It would have been very fun to see and it is fun to read, but I can understand why they didn't show it or the Battle of Green Fork. Some one on another site said it better than I could..."Some economic thoughts:Let’s take Troy for example. That film had an estimated budget of about $175 million dollars (in 2004, not adjusted for inflation) and ran about 2 hours and 40 minutes long. The film also had somewhere in the neighborhood of about 20 or so characters with significant lines or roles. It had some pretty cool battle scenes, I thought, but this came at the expense of effectively raping the source material to tailor the story to suit the desires of a consumer audience hungry for the next GladiatorGame of Thrones, by comparison, has a budget of about $60 million and the series will run for a total of about 10 hours. On top of all of this, GoT has over 30 named characters who appear in at least half of the episodes."

  7. I was a little bit dissapointed by this episode. I was hoping for at least some part of the battle, but I hope they'll just leave it to the big one next week. I saw the end coming, to be honest. And I have no idea what Arya was doing. Otherwise, Varys was great, Robb was great, and Tyrion was amazing. His scenes with Tywin, the drinking game and story time with the whore, but especially his speech to the tribesmen were the best of the episode. When they ran beside him and knocked him out, I literally ROFL'd.

I'm giving this one a 'Great' because it was great, but not as good as I expected. I'm hoping for a spectacular finale.

  8. I absolutely cannot wait until Joffrey meets his end and I will grin from ear to ear to watch that little **** go down (haven't read the books so I don't know if it'll happen).  But damn it!  I love Sean Bean, I loved Lord Eddard Stark, and I want some damn vengeance.  Take down all the Lannisters except for Tyrion!

  9. I'm not complaining about the fight and looking at it froma financial point of view I totally get it. At least that way Jaime's kidnapping did come pretty much out of the blue.

  10. I just re-read the Drogo injury chapter in the books since I couldn't recall exactly how bad his wound was.

It was after the Dothraki conquered another tribe, he had an arrow in his arm and the rival khal had cut off Drogo's nipple. The flesh hung off his chest still attached by a small piece of flesh. So the wound was at least a inch or two square chunk of flesh missing.

Substitute a serious battle wound for that AWESOME one on one fight and a small scratch and the rest plays out very similarly.

  11. I felt the EXACT same way when I first read the book. Then add in the magnificent performance Sean Bean gave and I will miss Ned Stark even more!

It will be interesting to see if your desire for Lannister-icide will change in Season Two or Three. I found myself rooting FOR a very surprising person in the next two books. No spoilers tho :)

  12. Well thank you for giving me a surprise to look forward to for next season, I'm planning on reading at least Game of Thrones this summer and hopefully the 2nd book before next season.  If I had to guess, I would guess the person you're rooting for would be Jamie because my opinion of him has changed over the course of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Maybe... maybe not... I'm not telling! :)

I hope someone (perhaps you?) does a review of the series as a non-reader who watched the series.... then read the books after the fact. I would find it very interesting to see how someone's opinion of the series changes with book knowledge.

Everyone is different of course, but I thought knowing the books enhanced my enjoyment of the series. I do wonder though If I would have enjoyed it more not knowing....

    ReplyDelete
  14. I also plan on reading at least the first book before season 2, not sure if i should/will read more. Hard decision.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I can see how hard it would be!

Weren't you the one that did not enjoy The Walking Dead due to the differences from comic to series? Hmmm maybe someone else, but that is always a risk for some people.

  16. Like most here I was incredibly happy with the episode overall.  Maisie is amazing, the scene with Varys visiting Ned was just a beautiful piece of work, the direwolves were missing again (booooo!!), and even though I knew it was coming Ned's death made my throat swell up like I had swallowed a bee.

Also like most, I have a huge problem with the Dany storyline.  From a literary standpoint she is truly a main character.  Some may disagree however from beginning of book to end, she is probably the character which experiences the most growth/change.  I have a hard time thinking of Ned as a main character for the reason that he experiences nearly none and is basically the same character in his death that he was when we first meet him.

I have been sorely disappointed with Dany's lack of growth displayed on the show, it has been disjointed - almost sporadic (much like her pregnancy).  Emilia does a wonderful job drawing that fine line between vunerable and icily regal and what few amount of lines spared for the Dothraki story lines have been crucial to next weeks finale but like the baby bump, it's almost been an afterthought.

I also loved the drinking game - it totally reminded me of LOST whe Sawyer and Kate played "I never".

Every week I lose another piece of my heart to Peter Dinklage ... Ah Skittle <3 (die Shae die).  He doesn't overpower the scenes but every scene he's in with whomever he's with always end up being my favorites.

Joffrey, you smug a$$ ... grrrr
Sansa, that's what you get stupid
Cercie, yeah - not as in control as you thought hmmm

  17. Liked the episode in general, but two points...

    1) Why did Ned decide to go against what he'd said in the Prison? He said he would never confess and that he was ready for death...
    2) Khal surely has had far worse injuries and for him to suddenly die is a bit rubbish.... :(

Can't believe Ned's gone already! Crikes....

Would have liked to see some of the battles too...

    ReplyDelete
  18. @AdamdHarris:disqus Ned did that to save Sansa. Varys' last question to him about would he do it to save his daughter made him change his mind.

  19. I'm the same way... I have read the first 10 or something chapters of A game of thrones and I like them, but I'm not sure I'm going to like the series as much as I do now if I know what's goin to happen.

  20. Khal Drogo may be dead/dying, but Jason Momoa is going to kill it as Conan! I just saw the trailer on TV and looked at some Youtube vids.

Um.. yeah.  I'm picturing 90 minutes of Khal Drogo giving speeches around a fire and kicking ass...

  21. Nope, I haven't read the comics when the show started, started reading them afterwards and hope this won't be ruining season 2 for me, but I'm confident Darabont won't screw it up for me because at least most of the alterations from the comics made sense. Only plot I'd criticize would be the Vatos guys, that was rather unnecessary.

  22. I'd rather would have submitted Emilia Clarke as lead actress instead of Lena Heady. On the one hand Clarke has grown on me and is doing a pretty good job (although I personally don't think it's Emmy nomination worthy yet) and she's far more present than Cersei who isn't having a really huge part this season. On the other hand I'm also not a fan of Heady's acting on GoT so far although when I heard she would be on this show I was happy about it and never expected to be criticizing her.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 90 minutes of a shirtless Jason Mamoa is totally worth $10 for the theater.  Plus I'm a huge fan of Boris Vallejo's art and the original Conan movie (despite Arnold's laughable acting ... um "skills"?).

    ReplyDelete
  24. Since you haven't read the book, you should know that they never wrote from Cercei's POV in book 1 or book 2.  I think Lena's performance is hindered by the fact that she only interacts with the POV characters and we never really know what she's thinking.  Definitely wouldn't have submitted her as lead yet she gets far more screen time than Dany who IMO really should be.

  25. loved the episode, im not going to repeat what everone said, i agree about Khal's wound being silly and stuff but! i'd like to point out that this episode was probably the best directed this season, It had awesome camera shots (seriously compare it to last few 'static' episodes), great scenery, no wait awesome scenery, the bridge was epic! and the aftermath of the battle looked amazing. Alan Taylor should direct more episode next season, He better be directing next week's season finale too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The thing everyone needs to realize about Drogo's wound is yes, he has had worse. The WOUND is not killing him. If I had a wound like that and someone stuffed it with poison, it would kill me too. Look to the 'witch' in regards to Drogo's sickness

    ReplyDelete
  27. I thought cinematography speaking it was one of the best episodes of the year!

The camera movement and angles added so much in this episode. Most of it was due to the direction I think too, but some was having more emotional material to film I'm sure. Regardless, I see why they used this episode for their Emmy nominations(Editing, Directing and Writing Categories).

    ReplyDelete
  28. If no one else does that and I had the time I would probably enjoy writing those reviews of the episodes and reading the book after the fact.

From my experience the books are always better than the movies/shows because books have the ability to dive deeper into what a character is thinking or little things that make a scene more memorable that can only be described in words.  In that regard I'm hoping that reading the book after the season will give me more insight into the characters and scenes.

Oh, and thanks for not telling me who I might be rooting for next season because I love the mystery!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I just feel sorry for Danaerys now.. (or Dany, I just can't force myself to call her that, I haven't read the books, so I'm not so familiar with her :D). I was all like: Yaaay, way to go, girl, whenever she stood up to her white-haired idiot of a brother. But now she seems rather desperate. I wonder if she's ever going to gain the trust of the Dothraki again. Or convince them not to kill her.

And again, I LOVE Arya. She is the best character.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Believe me when I say that by the end of next weeks finale you will have absolutely ZERO pity for Dany ... shock, awe, amazement, and if they do it right you might even be drooling.

I don't want to give it away because it is so damn good but if you go back and watch her scenes from this season again and the listen to the lines again after the finale, the only reason you'll have to feel sorry is that they didn't spend more time with her.

Perhaps they've done it on purpose to make the ending more ... UMPHtastic.  I have noticed the lack of certain props recently that were very prominent in the books and they showed initially but now not so much ...

All I can say is that if the death of Ned Stark blew your mind get ready to wear a helmet next week to keep your brains in place.

  31. Daenerys certainly has had a hard time so far! Born during a rebellion that killed her family, raised by an unstable brother that feels like he owns her, married off for troops, transplanted into a foreign culture, lost her only connection to her past, losing her connection in her present and she's a soon to be single mom surrounded by violent barbarians that will want to kill your baby since it is the old Khal's bloodline.! I feel bad for her too and I didn't even like her in the first book! Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I had wondered about that too! Those certain unnamed items that were always on camera but have not been seen now for i think 4 episodes almost. They're trying to lull us to sleep and then WHAMO!

  33. I believe theres a saying about whatever doesnt kill you ... Danys about to bring the fierce.  I CAN"T WAIT!!!

  34. Here I am trying to be careful and someone has spoiled it in the promo comments ... just a warning for those who don't want to know.

  35. Wouldn't happen to be the things that I mention in the podcast a lot would they? :P

    ReplyDelete
  36. Busted - I haven't done the podcasts yet ... I'm downloading now with my head hung down in shame :(

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hmmm... Maybe?  XP

I haven't heard the new GoT-centric podcast yet.... if that's what you mean.... I am eagerly waiting it!

  38. At least you get the benefit of the segment breakdowns to FF or RR the podcast (as if anyone would EVER do that!), I'm always awake right as they post them and listen before they have a segment breakdown added. Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oooh, now I totally know what you mean.. Damn me for reading these discussions! :)

    ReplyDelete
  40.  It sucks, but despite all your effort not to spoil it, I got it (combined with the comment below :D) and now my imagination is over-heating (if that's a proper english expression.. probably not)

  41. The most interesting thing about this episode to me is that it's truly the end of the beginning of the saga that is A Song of Ice and Fire.

For 9 episodes people have watched and many likely thought Sean Bean and Marc Addy (as Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon) were the stars of the series, but this episode closed that act and revealed the heroes/heroines are actually the Stark kids! Game of Thrones: The Next Generation.

I am really interested to see how people react to finding out this dark, and gritty saga has mostly children as its lead characters from here on out! Will they tune out ? Will it hook them? Obviously it is not a series made for children, but will losing the two most heavy-hitting adult characters make some lose interest?

Ok so I oversimplified a bit to say it's all about the kids from now on... guilty. Those kids are in a very adult world so it is never going to be Disney-esque It is just so unique to TV series to centralize most plots around 2 lead actors and then kill off said actors. Personally, that is what drew me into the sage on a level unlike anything I had read before. It was powerful, unique, realistic and downright unnerving! If GRRM will kill off his two leads, what else might he do? Is anyone safe?

Questions like that are what make Game of Thrones so powerful and unique to me... and what makes me sad there is only one episode left this season. Truly no other series on TV is like it...

What do you all think and feel about it?
Tune in next week for the ramblings of an insomniac part 2: the finale....

  42. You don't know how excited I am to read this. When watching the first few episodes, I was dissapointed by the little space they were giving Robb, Bran, Arya and Sansa (and I honestly don't remember the youngest boy's name). Bran was a skilled climber, he was a smart boy, and they crippled him. I expected Sansa to turn against her family and  be able to kill just to marry Joffrey and become a part of the royal family. Mostly I was baffled when I saw how much potential Arya, a great archer and incredibly inteligent girl, had and how little opportunities they gave her to show it.

I honestly expected Arya to suddenly be grown up after a "time jump". Imo she could carry the Stark legacy on her own. Well, I hope my hopes will be fullfilled :) Sansa really let me down, isn't the girl kinda selfish? I hope Arya will get to her and give her a few slaps! And that Arya will step up and start stabbing Lannisters with her Needle every chance she gets.

    ReplyDelete
  43. This is so true - I can't wait to see Arya and Bran next season.  They are both so engaging and their stories are the ones I most look forward to when reading.  And they are both so adorable :)  Maisie has completely won my heart this year.  I'm even looking forward to Sophie's Sansa next year despite how annoying her character is now, she is going to have some really meaty scenes in season 2 (or at least more so than in season 1).
