The Playboy Club - NBC's Salt Lake City Affiliate Refusing to Air the Show

Jun 13, 2011

KSL Television has informed the NBC Network that the station will not carry the program, the Playboy Club, scheduled to begin on NBC in September.

The decision is based on the station's long-term policy to screen programming for material which significant portions of our audience may find objectionable.

KSL President and CEO Mark Willes said, "The Playboy brand is known internationally. Everyone is clear what it stands for. We want to be sure everyone is clear what the KSL brand stands for, which is completely inconsistent with the Playboy brand."

KSL and the network will look for options to allow the show to be seen in this market on another channel.

KSL Programming Director Michelle Torsak said, "Our intent is not to tell people what they can and cannot watch, but rather to share programming with our audience in accordance with our mission."

KSL and the Deseret Media companies are sponsors of the "Out in the Light Campaign," which seeks to educate people on problems associated with viewing sexually explicit material.

The chairwoman of the Utah Coalition Against Pornography -- community activist Pamela Atkinson -- prepared a guest commentary on the issue.

"The Playboy brand is known internationally. Everyone is clear what it stands for. We want to be sure everyone is clear what the KSL brand stands for, which is completely inconsistent with the Playboy brand." -Mark Willes

  1. Is this an episode of Big Love or what?

  2. Can they really afford to do that, being an NBC affiliate with the ratings that entails?

  3. Yeah, I'm sure NBC will air nudity on primetime, good call for noticing that, KSL !

Seriously, what are they afraid of ? Besides, they haven't even seen a single episode of the show (or maybe just the pilot), so why are they banning it already, just because of the title ? Someone needs to make them remember that you don't judge a book by its cover.

Now I hope this station won't complain about illegal downloading.

  4. Why are Americans so afraid of "possible" nudity? Human beings are born NAKED for christs sake.

But, perfectly fine with all the violence and gore on tv, no problem.

  5. Hypocritical, puritanical asshats.  Where were they when CBS was airing The Defenders?  The fact that Jim Belushi still gets work is deeply offensive to me.

  6. Even though I think the show is going to suck I think this is just stupid. I don't doubt that same affiliate airs trashy stuff all the time, if not worse. It's like the Lane Bryant commercial that that was censored from showing on ABC and FOX. Both networks show Victoria's Secret commercials and shows that are violent and sexual in nature but won't show the Bryant commercial because the models are BBW. Complete hypocrisy...
