AMC announced today the renewal of "The Killing" for a 13-episode second season. From writer, executive producer and series showrunner Veena Sud ("Cold Case"), season one premiered on Sunday, April 3 to 2.7 million total viewers. The series currently reigns as the second highest premiere season for an original drama in AMC history. "The Killing" is based on the successful Danish television series "Forbrydelsen" and is produced by Fox Television Studios and executive produced by Mikkel Bondesen ("Burn Notice") for Fuse Entertainment. Season one's finale premieres Sunday, June 19 at 10pm EST.

Since its debut, "The Killing" has garnered rave reviews and critical acclaim. The Hollywood Reporter hailed, "when each episode ends, you long for the next - a hallmark of great dramas." The New York Post said "You will be angry every time an episode ends" and The Los Angeles Times called it, "A show that is visually poetic, normatively compelling and, most important, sustainable for a good long haul." Vanity Fair said, "The Killing is the heroin of dramatic television series... I kept watching... and watching... The Killing is the best show on television."

"Veena and her writers, cast and crew; FTVS; and Fuse have shown us how much room there is to elevate the crime drama with this series," said Joel Stillerman, AMC's SVP of original programming, production and digital content. "The suspense of the investigation in each episode, and the emotional intensity of the characters over the season give this show a visceral quality that makes for incredibly powerful television. A lot of loyal fans made a huge investment in this show this season, and we are thrilled to be able to bring it back next season for all involved."

David Madden, president, Fox Television Studios, said, "We are proud to bring back one of the most extraordinary casts on television to tantalize, scare, mesmerize, and occasionally infuriate the audience for one more season, with Veena Sud masterfully at the helm again. The audience response to this show has been so overwhelming, and it is a privilege for us to have the chance to produce more episodes, especially for a network as shrewd and tasteful as AMC. May 'The Killing' never stop."

Shot on location in Vancouver, "The Killing's" season one is anchored by a breakout cast, including Mireille Enos ("Big Love") as Sarah Linden, the lead homicide detective investigating the death of Rosie Larsen; Billy Campbell ("Once and Again") as Darren Richmond, Seattle's City Council President running for Mayor; Joel Kinnaman (Snabba Cash) as Stephen Holder, an ex-narc cop who joins the homicide division in the investigation to find Rosie's killer; Michelle Forbes ("True Blood") as Rosie's mother, Mitch; and Brent Sexton (W., In the Valley of Elah) as Rosie's father, Stan.

AMC's Joel Stillerman, SVP of original programming, production and digital content, Susie Fitzgerald, SVP of scripted programming, and Jason Fisher, SVP of production, oversee series production for the network.

  2. i havent watched it, planning on watching it? Does it get boring? i mean, the whole show is about one case right?

  3. It's slow paced, but incredibly good. I for myself am pretty sick of procedurals dealing with one case per episode. This show sheds light on the repercussions this case has on police, family and politics. It also explores the relationships between the characters pretty detailed.
Very happy it finally got renewed although it was expectable.

  4. As long as the show sticks to the one season, one case format I'm happy about this.

  5. I would rather have Rubicon. This is a good series though. Happy to see it back for another season.

  6. Totally agree, if the Killing doesn't reveal the killer in the next episode I don't think it will get anywhere near as many viewers next season.
That said I will miss Michelle Forbes.

  8. *Warning: Potential spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen all of the aired episodes yet!...*

First of all, thank you AMC for this! :) As someone who lives in Seattle and really appreciates in-depth mystery/homicide movies, this show is the holy grail for me.

Second, my apologies in advance for the length of this post!

And third... I think I have a pretty good idea of a possible plot course for season 2. Of course, a week from now I'll either be proven totally wrong or at least get an idea of whether I'm on the right track or not, but hey, it's pretty fun to theorize regardless, especially when a show gives you so much to work with.

At this point I think it's clear, the killer is someone powerful, someone pulling the strings. It was easy to miss and I didn't catch it at all until I watched a second time, but Richmond said in two weeks he would know if he was the next mayor. Consider the timeframe here. This is day 12 of a 13 day season. 2 weeks from then would be 26 days after the murder. So if they continue at the pace of an episode = one day and pick up right from where they left off, season 2 could hypothetically end with the election.

I definitely believe we will learn who the killer is, definitively, in episode 13... but I don't know how easy it'll be for Linden and Holder to catch them, mainly due to the killer's connections and power. And if Richmond isn't the killer and Linden and Holder stake everything they have on it being him, nobody would believe them anymore and they'd be on their own, leaving them to potentially go rogue and continue the investigation on their own in season 2. Everyone loves to root for the underdogs.

So season 2 in my mind could very well be Linden and Holder knowing and believing the truth when nobody else will. Since we'd already know who the killer is, we could start following them almost like they do with a big bad in Dexter. We'd watch their instability, ruthlessness in covering it up, and we'd witness firsthand that insane urge that drives them to kill again. Maybe we'd see them attempt to use their connections in order to take out Linden and Holder, creating a whole new sense of paranoia and adding a sort of conspiracy theory aspect to the mix.

Either way, I'm sure I'll still love whatever it is they have planned whether it's an entirely new case or not. Who knows, maybe they'll still be trying to catch the killer under the radar AND be working on an entirely new homicide as well. But from all the seeds they planted this year, I wouldn't be surprised if they just keep peeling back layers and layers of all the already introduced characters (aside from probably the Larsens) while adding more complexity to the political and media coverage to increase the stakes.

  10. This + Rubicon would be nice.

  11. I also would love it whatever they decide, but my preference is for an entirely new case. I'm curious about the title, though, because it indicates a single case. If it were "A Killing," that would be different.

  12. Oooo, just read that "Aunt Terry" will be back next season. So there will be at least some link to the Larsen case.

  13. watched it. I am a big fan of murder mysteries and this was my kind of show and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it but I was disappointed with the ending, but I am keeping an open mind and will watch the next season.
