Guillermo del Toro has offered a status update on his Incredible Hulk television series.
The Mexican filmmaker told FEARnet that the live-action adaptation is well into the scripting stage.
"We turned in the outline to ABC about four weeks ago," he told the website. "And then we did a rewrite for ABC on the outline, and now we are lining up the pages."
Del Toro, who is developing the project with Battlestar Galactica producer David Eick, went on to say that the show will feature an entirely new take on the Marvel Comics hero.
"One of the points of this project early on with Marvel was, 'We're going to do this thing different, and here's how. Are you interested?' And they were," he added.
Incredible Hulk is being scheduled for an autumn 2012 debut.

There is something inherently campy to the Incredible Hulk, I just don' know if a live action series could work unless they make fun of themselves in the process. The old series was cheesy, the recent movies were bad and fairly good I guess., Even the uber-talented Edward Norton couldn't make his Hulk movie great for me, but it was significantly better than the Ang Lee mess.
ReplyDeleteMaybe this new take on it would be something more believable and watchable.... maybe..
Well, with it being a television show, I imagine that they would have to make the Hulk somewhat less impressive than in the movies. Obviously, that wouldn't be to the extent of the original show with a guy in green paint, but still. If they make him less ridiculous, perhaps they can make the premise less campy? It's either going to be a comedy of sorts (a la Charlie's Angels reboot), or something super serious. I mean, it's del Toro and Eick. I say we prepare ourselves for something kind of gritty.
ReplyDeleteI like Del Toro. I loved Pan's Labyrinth, Cronos and Hellboy movies. It's just The Hulk that throws me off I guess.
ReplyDeleteThe "less impressive" aspect sounds more impressive to me XD. I hated how huge Hulk became in the movies... and the CGI. I find Banner the most interesting aspect of the story. The tortured man trying to deal with the animal within, but most people I know wanted to see "Hulk smash" and the FX.
I will keep an eye out either way since I like del Toro.
Cautiously optimistic here but I hope they can pull it off. del Toro is awesome and I like that they might be doing a different spin on the Hulk. But, like @darq said...it's still the Hulk.
ReplyDeleteOn one hand, 'Del Toro making hulk for tv, sounds great'.
ReplyDeleteOn the other,'Holy noodles batman, there's a comic book series on every channel :( '
All I can say is "take your time." A project like this is monumentally easier to screw up than it is to get right.
ReplyDeleteWow that is so true!
ReplyDeleteSlightly more interested in this than yet another Hulk movie, main because I'd like some consistency with an actor playing Bruce.
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't even know what to think about this. I love all of Del Toro's work, (Pan's Labyrinth might be my favorite movie ever) but sheesh... I am burnt out on superheroes lately...much less having to watch it every week. Obviously this project is in capable hands, and I won't make up my mind until it comes into fruition (or until it is quietly swept under the rug, like Kripke's adaptation of Neil Gaiman's "Sandman")
ReplyDeleteHulk is a solid character when in good hands. I prefer the his comic book counterpart myself - like - http://www.comicbookandmoviereviews.com/2011/07/incredible-hulks-631.html
ReplyDeleteI hope they could used the same cast from the 2008 film or if they use a new cast then get the right person for the cast instead of a cheap cast.
