House - Latest on Lisa Edelstein

3 Jun 2011

The character of Lisa Cuddy wasn’t expected to disappear after House’s seventh season. In fact, Executive Producer David Shore told EW that he was planned on Cuddy’s alter-ego Lisa Edelstein to be back for more after they shot the drama’s finale.

As a result, Shore would have crafted a different season ender had he known her plans. (The actress, whose contract expired at the end of season 7, declined to renew her deal). ”I don’t know how exactly [he would have changed the finale],” Shore told EW during a special charity event for House Thursday that benefitted the Writers Guild Foundation. “I don’t what it would have been. It probably would have involved more closure on the character. I was really disappointed. I am still reeling from it but we just started meeting a few days ago like we always do this time of year to try to map out the first half of the next season and we are having some very frank discussions about what we are going to do.”

House scribe Peter Blake, who co-wrote the finale with Shore, said explaining Edelstein’s departure will end up being the easy part. “Weirdly for me, I think the harder question to answer is, what would we have done with Huddy if she was still on the show? I think both would have been hard although we all wish Lisa was still here,” Blake said. “The hardest part about her being gone is we lost an important character to write stories about. I think everyone know that the writers have nothing to do with her departure. It is a big deal because the Cuddy-House dynamic is one the reasons people watch the show. It was one of the driving forces of the show and one of the reasons it kept bubbling up.”

    and they destroyed it because...?

It's also the main reason many viewers stopped watching the show. I really wish Shore and the writers would learn to distinguish House fans from huddy fans. We're not all in the same group. Maybe more former viewers will become regular viewers again. I know I will. Hopefully season 8 House will be something people will want to sit down and watch again instead of something that's just on in the background.

  3. "The Cuddy-House dynamic" isn't a term that applies solely to the Huddy relationship.

  4. They didn't, Lisa Edelstein did. Their great dynamic would have
continued and would have been further explored with even more depth if Lisa Edelstein had stayed. "Dynamic" is not a synonym for romance.

  5. I think they do a fine job distinguishing House fans from Huddy fans, anti-Huddy fans, fans of change for the better, fans of change for the worse, fans against change of any kind, procedural fans, serial fans, comedy fans, drama fans, fans of realism, fans of artistic liberties... by not fully catering to any type of narrow-viewed fan category, they've basically pissed off everybody at some point, except House fans (aka, me).

  6. Erm, no. The writers had House drive his car into her house. That is a horrible and unforgivable act of violence. In any even remotely realistic setting, that means she will never want to be anywhere near him again. The romance was clearly over, but now any chance of being friends or even just co-workers is gone too. Just how would they ever be around each other again? How could she possibly ever forgive him for doing something like this? Answer: there is no way. No realistic way anyway.
And so it was indeed the writers who completely destroyed their dynamic, not Lisa. She was just smart enough to see that and realize there was nothing interesting to do on the show for her anymore. Sadly :-(

  7. No, Lisa Edelstein did not. House would have criminal charges laid against him and would realistically not been able to talk to Cuddy so I don't really see how they would have explored or deepened anything when one half of them is an abuser.

  8. The House-Cuddy dynamic was the main reason people watched the show in the last seasons, because let´s face it: how long can you attract viewers with the same formula? Nobody cares anymore about the diseases. It's all about House and his problems, so Cuddy became a key character in his development. Having said that, I liked this season's ending because if they weren't going to move forward with their relationship, it was better for them to kill it. Quite frankly viewers would have gotter tired of being jerk around with the no HUDDY. So Lisa Edelstein made the right choice. If they wanted to destroy something that had the pontencial of being a great story for nothing, then she made the right the call.

  9. Nobody got this upset when Cameron left and they destroyed her character too, so that should tell you how big a mistake they have made.

  10. I thought it was just a question about money, not about the ending or the stories to come (that haven't been written yet).

  11. It was unquestionably going to be rough, but not necessarily impossible. People have been known to want to spend time around people even when they aren't particularly safe or good for them. Cuddy did feel guilt over the breakup and has forgiven him against better judgment in the past. We also have no idea what House's response will be to what he did. It's very true that he's really stepped up his game for this one, but there is none-the-less precedence for at least partial forgiveness. Ultimately, we'll never know what would have happened to their dynamic, good or bad, because of Lisa Edelstein's decision, not the writers. You don't know if she decided to leave because "there was nothing interesting to do on the show," that's in your head.

  12. Cuddy can drop the charges and change her mind. You don't know what would have happened or why and neither do I.

  13. They were never friends to begin with, even before they started dating. So even if they wen't back to what they had before the dating, what would that be? He insults her and makes fun of her cleavage and she rolls her eyes at him?

  14. There are actually fans of the the show and the character of House who aren't fans of cuddy and huddy. You shouldn't say that "nobody" cares about the medical mysteries. That used to be the core of the show. It was House and the team solving the medical mystery. Wilson was his friend and once an episode cuddy would say no and then change her mind. When cuddy because a main character and LE became a costar the show suffered from soap-itis.

Viewers may have gotten tired of House being a jerk with no huddy, but clearly viewers got very tired very quickly of House becoming nothing more than half of huddy.

Glad that LE left the show because hopefully they can move on from huddy now and write some decent episodes that don't focus on House as a lovesick lapdog.

  15. Many people got upset about that too, Cameron fans are just less noisy.

  16. You took the words right out of my mouth. The medical mysteries were always the most important part of the show for me.

  17. You took the words right out of my mouth. The medical mysteries have always been the most important part of the show for me. House solving cases no one else can solve is the core of this show. He's an ass, but he's a genius, that's what I love about him!

  18. medical mysteries? where are they? it's always the same thing now, not funny or dramatic anymore, the openings are always the same, I'd say yes stop with romances and stupid storylines as Taub and Rachel, but please writers some good medical cases like in the first seasons!
and no no no for a romance between 13 and Chase, romances are dumb in this show, exemple : huddy since season 6.

  19. <>

ITA 100%  Huddy ruined House and I bet that LE left because she realized that Cuddy was going back to the 5min of screentime she was supposed to have since Season1

  20. The ratings for S7 dropped like a rock. Oh yeah and the main story was Cuddy and Huddy.

  21. Don´t agree with the first part, but I agree with the second one

  22. Wait for the ratings for S8.......black hole is coming

  23. Huddy was there from minute 1 in House MD tv series, the difference was sex or not sex...
Medicine, Cuddy and Wilson are the three supports in House's life. Where House will be without Cuddy, without Wilson  and without Medicine, after the last episode...? (I don't think he could be a doctor after a murder attempt, not next year, at least)
