Ryan Murphy has revealed that the original members of the Glee cast will graduate high school at the end of the third season.
The Glee creator spoke to Ryan Seacrest in a radio interview on Friday, confirming that he intends to stick to his plan of refreshing the cast of Glee at the end of the 2012 season.
"This next [season] will be their senior year, and then that [they] will graduate," Murphy said. "We didn't want to have a show where they were in high school for eight years. We really wanted to be true to that experience."
Original cast members that may leave at the end of the coming season include Rachel (Lea Michele), Finn (Cory Monteith), Quinn (Dianna Agron) and Puck (Mark Salling).

this actually makes me so angry.
ReplyDeleteThank God!!
ReplyDeleteNothing worse than "high school" kid with a comb-over!
Cory is dangerously close to having one. I think a few should have graduated last year honestly....
i'll watch season 4!
ReplyDeleteWhile it's definitely the more realistic option, I have a sneaky suspicion a lot of fans will be exiting with the original cast.
ReplyDeleteI think everyone can agree what helps the show pull off some of it's more gimmicky elements is the (on the large) fantastic cast, if a second rate actress was cast as Rachel she would come off as annoying and unsympathetic, but Lea Michele pulls off the part really well. It's a brave decision, and, to be honest, I'm not sure it will pay off.
ReplyDeleteWell, it's good to see this happening, but I don't know if I like it...
ReplyDeleteI mean, I'm really tired of the "glee club" aspects of the show (so I don't know how I will stand another season of that next year). I like it because of characters like Santana, Brittany, Kurt, Blaine...
So, another "we're going to regionals, then nationals..." year with new and possible less interesting characters? I don't want to see "the Mike, Tina and Artie show".
Another option is to follow that departing characters, like Kurt and Rachel in New York.
Rachel and Finn? oh thanks God! they are suuuper annoying.
ReplyDeleteBut Quinn and Puck?oohh noo..!
I can't see any reasons why Puck (or Brittany for that matter) couldn't stay for another year.. passing exams (or whatever you must to do to graduate in the US) could be hard for them :D
let's just hope they'll keep Santana.
I agree with you, that would be totally logical to follow the main characters after high school, and I hope viewers won't stop watching the show just because new characters will come (for the moment, only 2 girls ... ) I'll be watching season 4 too ;)
ReplyDeleteYep, you're right, I read that Brittany won't be graduated, so I guess she'll stay at high school ;)
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, I hope they will keep funny characters as Santana, Puck or Kurt *crosses her fingers* =)
this is kinda exactly what I was thinking ...
ReplyDeleteI'm torn about this. Yes, the general idea behind it is a very good one. But it also means losing those characters ... and I don't want to ... letting go of so many of the main cast with the same season is almost as if the show ended after 3 seasons already. I know that it will still go on and that we'll still see some of the people, but ... yah ... I don't know ... it's good, but then again it's not good. (And I totally saw that coming and it wasn't a surprise, yet it's still kinda shocking to get an official statement)
ReplyDeleteIt will never be the same, no matter who they cast. A bunch of people will stop watching and then the writing will keep slipping, and it could possibly turn out to be a huge mistake. But as he said, keeping them in high school for 8 years would be too. This is going to make me stress out over the summer and next year. >:(
ReplyDeleteI'll miss Lea as Rachel, but most of all 'Lady Di' as Quinn.
What everyone above me has seemed to forget is that just because the cast is graduating high school, does not mean they are leaving the show.
ReplyDeleteMy theory: Next year, the Glee Cast will successfully place in the National competition, but they will be ranked the last possible posting (i.e. 10th place). Then, Season 4 will focus on the choir having to do the nationals tournament and climb to first place. That way, all the characters can still be in the show and we can see the graduated characters struggle with both being freshmen in college and still competing with show choir.
At least, if I were a writer on the show, that's how I'd want to accomplish it. Anyways, people who stop watching the show just because some characters leave obviously don't understand the true premise of the series. So in my opinion, good riddance and good luck to Glee season 4. I'll be watching.
Chanelle Montpetit i agree with you do a spin off with them in new york because what is glee without those four alot of original fans will leave with them leaving for me what is glee without finchel.
ReplyDeleteAnd funny cause I think a lot a viewers will also leave.. wonder why ryan fucking murphy!
ReplyDeleteedit: I will watch season 4 if we get kurt though :P but then i wold be happy if it ended there. (spinoff with kurt blaine rachel and finn in newyork anyone? cmon that finale really got me going about that idea)
That's good. I was hoping they wouldn't keep them in high school forever that would be silly. But those new cast members better be good.
