Game of Thrones - Episode 1.09 - Baelor - Ratings

Jun 14, 2011

Despite airing against the Tony Awards and the NBA Finals, HBO’s Game of Thrones tied its series high in the ratings Sunday night.

Thrones delivered another 2.7 million for its premiere telecast, same as last week’s high, and was down just a tick overall for the night (3.4 million). Yes, it’s safe to assume that number would likely be slightly bigger if not for the stiff live competition. Given the outrage over Sunday’s Game-changing twist that left a contingent of fans threatening to quit the show, next week’s season-finale numbers should be interesting.

Thrones also received some great news yesterday when it gathered several top nominations in the Television Critics Association Awards. The first-year show was nominated for best drama series, new program and program of the year.

  1. Woot :). I can only hope that angry viewers don't throw the threatened hissy fit and actually bail on show because of last episode's ending.

  2. Viewers who do that are so silly, I've not even read the books and I knew some serious shit was going to happen this season. Ned was a great character but the most interesting? No way. Plus the writers couldn't change what happened apparently its central to everything else that happens in the story.

Ahhh fans and their OTT reactions!

  3. Was I really the only one who saw Ned's death coming for about 2 episodes? They were setting it up pretty well. First, if they actually let him live the main story with the Starks and the Lanisters would be squashed. And second they firmly established that absolutely no one is safe. When they killed Rob, Ned's story line ended. He no longer had a place in Kings Landing and there's nothing they could do with him if he went back north. Useless characters tend to die in this show. Plus in dying they can send the plot in a whole new direction. Why is everyone so shocked that it happened?

  4. Agreed.
I wrote a little bit about that in the episode poll earlier wondering how people will react to knowing the series heroes are NOT Ned and Robert.... but really the Stark kids.

Good to know ratings were solid again! I wish HBO was like BBC and as soon as a series was over that very week the DVD set for the season is released. Instead, we will get HBO's usually pokey DVD release that will come sometime right at the start of next season 9 or 10 months later.... Sigh.

  5. I saw it coming because Sean Bean already signed up to star in another show, but story-wise it was a surprise. Ned was the main character and the hero so far. Usually these kind of characters don't get killed off so easily even if show creators say nobody is safe and that's why a lot of people were shocked about it.

  6. Well, now it doesn't seem like such a surprise as it did when I watched it. Fortunately, I tend not to think about the writers' intentions, if you do that, you can usually guess what they're up to. Not just in GoT
