Diehard Fringe fans were certainly in for a surprise at the end of the season three finale, but perhaps the most surprising thing of all is that the show’s writers and executive producers Jeff Pinkner and Joel H. Wyman are still able to pull things out that garner such strong reactions from the fandom at all. After all, after three years of alternate universes, mysterious cases of the week, and mind-bending science, we really should know that just about anything can happen. Expect the unexpected, as these guys like to say! But that doesn't mean we didn't want to try to get a little something out of them about what we could expect for Fringe in season four!
“We always look at it as a new chapter every season. It’s like you get the book and so you can expect something you did not expect. We like to say that. It’s not as easy as ‘Oh, it’s a jump forward’; we always try to go a little deeper than that,” Wyman teased LA TV Insider Examiner when we caught up with him and Pinkner at the Critics Choice Awards.
“Josh’s character, Peter, made a heroic choice, and Walter recognizes he might have to sacrifice to save his son, and now we’re fighting the consequences of that,” Pinker followed up, reminding us.
Since Fringe plays with space and time and reality, the show pushes boundaries others do not and therefore can go places other cannot. For one thing, no one is definitively dead on Fringe, so if there is an old character for whom they really loved to write, they can always find a way to bring the person back.
“Without revealing anything, we have some really-- we have some things we’re very excited about. We’re bringing back some characters who were among our favorites,” Pinkner shared.
The third season of Fringe has been garnering some early Emmy buzz, which surely excites not only the fans but the showrunners who originally started with a six-year plan for the series. Naturally some of their ideas were implemented quicker than others, and perhaps than originally intended, while others are still unfolding, but the bottom line is there is a deep mythology to the story, and both Wyman and Pinkner are incredibly grateful to get to tell it on their terms.
“Our fans are incredibly loyal; we have the best fans!” Pinker emphatically announced, noting that he never worries about backlash from a controversial character moment or decision because he knows the fans trust the show and will come back to see how it all plays out and how they are taken care of in the end.
“It’s a relationship we really enjoy; we’re online; we connect with them. But I truly believe they’re going to love [the resolution from the season finale], and they’ll understand it. We have smart fans. They won’t be disappointed,” he promised.
Well, after hearing so many writers say that and then seeing so much online backlash after fans have been told to "trust" them only to feel let down, we have to admit we were wary; we weren’t sure about all that until...well, in all honesty, until we had the few minutes with these guys to learn first-hand just how thoughtful and passionate they are. We are what you would call “new” to the show because after hearing such great buzz about it we decided that it didn’t matter if it was on opposite another series we already cover, we were going to carve out time for its fourth season. And that of course, meant catching up with the first three years first. It was a luxury, that’s for sure, and it was one that Wyman pointed out not everyone can afford.
“We’ve had a lot of people say ‘We love the promos; we want to figure out time to watch’, but not everyone has time to sit down and watch [three full] seasons, so we tried to make this [fourth] season like a new pilot. We did that a little bit last season, too, but it will just be an entry point for people to come in who haven’t seen everything.”
After having done so ourselves, though, LA TV Insider Examiner can’t help but point out that there is still more than two months to marathon the already-existing episodes to be all caught up before the Fringe season premiere. Grab some snacks, some friends, your head (because some episodes may have it exploding!), and the early seasons box sets. We guarantee you will be glad you did!

Excitement. :P
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for season 4!
Just finished watching Season One and Two again and cannot wait for Season Four to arrive. Well, Season Three on BD is exciting too, but neither is arriving as fast as I want!
ReplyDeleteOh Please give us back David Robert Jones, John Mosley, and the child Observer!!!!
ReplyDeleteI want more Mosley and child Observer badly!!!
ReplyDeleteThis article just reminds me how happy I am to be re-watching all 65 episodes again, and I'm even happier knowing I am not the only one doing so.
ReplyDeleteBringing back characters? Let's start a list with David Robert Jones, Emmanuel Grayson, Harris, etc., etc.
I def eel very strongly that Peter had to take himself out for a time, because ZFT should be the real problem, as the 2026 End of Dayers would parallel them, and then also parallel what ever the real problem was in the original timeline, would suggest that time traveling terrorists should be the thing the universes have to fight against, instead of each other.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I was always suspicous of Mosley and Hoffman. (The Arrival + The Bishop Revival = Survival)
I have been re-watching episodes since the first season came out and am still doing it. I taped (the old fashioned way) season 3 and it has been awesome, even watching them by universe. Still catching up new Fringies at work and recruiting new ones.
ReplyDeleteI'm not even going to speculate about S4, just going to patiently wait...Not!
Fringe Rocks!
I totally forgot about Nick Lane, Sally Clark, and James Heath! It would be so cool if they made it and where apart of one of the Fringe Divisions! (And of course I would love more Frank Stanton and Mona Foster)
ReplyDeleteYou should get a Fringe medal for your recruiting efforts. ;)
ReplyDeleteI watched all three seasons for the first time from April to May, and I feel like doing it again before September.
ReplyDeleteWe got season 4, that's reward enough, plus Anna answered my question on the Fan asks clip :) One of these days I'm hoping to make it up to Vancouver and watch them film.
ReplyDeleteNo time for slacking off. Fringe Rocks!
ZFT weren't the problem, they were preparing for the problems when no one else was
ReplyDeletethe child observer definitely! i'd also like to see Charlie's spider doctor again.. giggles.
ReplyDeleteI love Jeff and Joel. As much this new Peter's plot make me a little worry, I do trust them. And I hope so badly that they bring Mr. Jones back.
ReplyDeleteIn the finale we learned that Monreau (and Walternate) where apart of End of Dayers Terrorists group which where blowing holes in the fabric of space time with the potential to create new realities, which then also reveals the case for the blue (and by extension red) universe, as this is how the machine came to exist in the blue universe--from the original future (or really in terms of even order the past) universe. ZFT is reapeated manifestation of these things, as so are the end of dayers...It was revealed that The ZFT manofesto was written by Bell to prepair, but Robert David Jones amongst others took out the chapter of ethics and was using Bell's beliefs, creating a terrorist group and improperly activating Bell's and Walter's cortixifan subjects to get to Bell--as David Robot Jones re opened a door, which mirrors what Monreau and Walternate start to do in the possible (repeating) 2026.
ReplyDeletedavid robert jones and harris would be awesome!!!! i loved the storyline involving harris! in s1 fringe had a more fbi feel to it that i miss a bit, and it was intersting to see how they had to respond to someone who was an outsider. one thing that i've noticed in s3 is that the circle of people involved in the cases kept reducing! now it's just them 3 and broyles. they are never in the fbi headquarters anymore and never get a bigger team to do raids! i miss that!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point about not much FBI involvement anymore. When they need any info it's always Astro to the rescue research wise . I guess it's a trade off.... more myth arc heavy plots means less outsiders involved.
ReplyDeleteFor me FRINGE started to hit on all cylinders when it amped up the serial aspect of the mythology and cut back the number of MOTW episodes. Even those MOTW episodes tied into the myth arc for the most part.
That's why I think it would be so neat of some of the cortexifaners would be apart of the fringe divisions now-- and they can battle it out with time traveling terrorists and get back to some of those actiony-Fringe cases, but yet keep the character depth-story mirroring fringe cases of season 3 with in it! Just to have that 'bridge' back to season 1 (and 2) would be so nice!
ReplyDeletei think fringe has improved since it's become more serialized, and i like that, like you point out, even motw episodes are relevant to the overarching mythology. but i do wish that it had maintained some of the external elements it had. you don't have to sacrifice mythology-heavy plots for that. and imo it gives a credible background in which to base the fringe story!
ReplyDeleteIf I recall correctly there's at least a dozen unaccounted for cortexiphan grown-ups roaming the Fringe world(s). Would be great if they expand on that in S4.
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Dan! That's some very intense Fringe-watching you did.
ReplyDeleteYou should re-watch all 65 episodes(imo) between now and Sept. to be 'fresh.'
WIth JR Orci back in the writers' group, be prepared for lots of references to prevous episodes.
Interesting , If "Robert David Jones" is acting as how Walternat was acting in " the day we died " I don't blame him ! he was seeing one thing which is : his world should survive .
ReplyDeleteBut , Jones dead , even by taking Peter off from the history that will not change the facts because linking the 2 universes = 2011 from the real time , which will suggest all the events before 2011 did happen .
I think Rachelle , Ella , Leob , and maybe Lucas can be coming back , but for jones .. we maybe will see AltJones ..... who was helping Jones from the other side .
LOVED, David Robert Jones. Jared Harris was ridiculously good.
ReplyDeleteThe child Observer was one of my favourite episode from season 1, so I'm game for that.
Perhaps they might bring back Agent Harris, he was the type of character you love to hate.
please bring back rachel an ella!!! i miss seeing olivia with them!
ReplyDeleteMe too!
