I agree about his comment on trailers and keeping things too close to the vest. Trailers that show it all is no fun. With the Super 8 trailer they didn't show a LOT, it was teasing. Even the movie itself teases until about the middle/end with what it is was in the train. And I loved it and how it was shot and the lens flares! Getting a bit off topic there, but I wore (one of) my Fringe shirt(s) to the showing. As for people making remarks about JJ not being involved in Fringe, I think in the very least he does sitdowns and talks about the upcoming seasonal arcs and main plots, even if he's not actually penning the scripts or directing an episode, he still has say as the co-creator. Either way, Wyman and Pinkner are doing a fabulous job as showrunners and I know S4 will blow my mind.
I, for one, am kind of sick of Fringe blowing my mind. Now, don't get me wrong, I love that the show is willing to take risks, and experiment... But, a big part of what drew me in during season one and especially season two was the characters and their relationships with one another, and the quiet family drama against the Scifi backdrop. They used to tell us that's exactly what the show was about, too - family. But, more and more as the ante gets upped, the writing of the personal touches gets worse. Hackneyed dialogue, emotional subtlety traded for cliches, inconsistent characterization, etc.
The latest shake-up was definitely a "OMG" moment, but to me, that's all it was. It left me cold. Now, again, props to Fringe for risks and mystery - plot and gimmick can be a good show. Just, you know, not a great one.
So, I'm wary about next season... I'll be there, of course, but I'm just not emotionally invested anymore. Intellectually invested, definitely, but the heart is gone.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I hope he is right. :P
ReplyDeleteYa .... because Season 3 finale didn't blow anyone's mind at all.....
ReplyDeleteDear JJ
ReplyDeletePlease, please, please, don't ever stop being this awesome. Seriously.
JJ, super 8 was good stuff, but can you please let the people who actually write Fringe make those kind of statements, it'll hold more water.
ReplyDeleteHis name is attached to the show, he is not going to say its going to suck.
ReplyDeleteI hope he is right though!
Season 3 did it for me.... but i hope 4 is equally as good if not better

ReplyDeleteI've been waiting for a post like this for a long time. Bring it on J.J.!! I'm ready man!
ReplyDeleteI love what he is saying :)
ReplyDeleteS4 will blow our mind .
I think season 3 finale is actually good. No big specia/visuall effects, but I think they've got a rich story-telling on that. IMHO :)
ReplyDeletecant u feel the irony in darq's quote?
ReplyDeleteI believe the term you are looking for is sarcasm not irony.
