Last week a nasty Doctor Who rumor was circulating — that even though Matt Smith has signed on to do another 14 Doctor Who episodes, there wouldn't be a full season next year. Sadly, these suspicions have been confirmed.
Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC One, was speaking at an event where we got the first confirmation that Doctor Who would NOT becoming back for a full season in 2012. A member of the audience, Wayne Clarke, confirmed via twitter that "Danny Cohen says there won't be a full series of Doctor Who in 2012, but a special run for the anniversary in 2013."
Which means that perhaps only a few episodes from the new season will air next year, and the rest will air in 2013. Cohen joked that the delay was due to Steven Moffat's other commitments on Sherlock Holmes, but the BBC later clarified that this wasn't the real reason (according to the BBC's Lizo Mzimba.)
But at the very least, let's hope this means the 50th anniversary will be an even bigger celebration of the show's long history, with tons of cameos and a huge storyline.

I've only seen 1 episode of this entire show, do not usually follow the news about it or anything, but this is just awful. Sorry Doctor Who fans. :(
ReplyDeleteUgh. I am so sick of this "splitting up the seasons" bullshit they seem to be pulling with so many sci-fi shows. It always seems to be money based so they can wring more money from us by selling the two halves separately for the same price you could buy one season for. It's disappointing.
ReplyDeleteWow. They skipped a year in 2009... now again in 2010. Not cool at all for Doc.Who fans, but sadly a common theme with UK shows...
ReplyDeletewtf
ReplyDeleteI am seriously displeased.

ReplyDeleteThere is no excuse for this. Moffat (reportedly) has the plot for season 7, they're starting to recruit writers, and the BBC gave the show a pick-up almost an entire year in advance. There's no good reason not to get this done.
ReplyDeleteSay what you want about American TV but 9 months a year we're grinding that stuff out like clockwork.
Well played, sir.
ReplyDeleteUnless it's not network. For example, Syfy had Season 4 of Battlestar Galactica completed and still split it up with many, many, many months between the airing of the first ten episode and the second half. I was actually thinking that this splitting up the season might be a result of American success.
ReplyDeleteO.O It's 2011 isn't it?
ReplyDeleteIf it were about the American success of the show the last thing they'd want would be an extra long hiatus. Just ask all the network shows that took huge ratings hits after their winter breaks this season. NBC and The CW learned that the hard way.
ReplyDeleteI meant 2012 :P
ReplyDeleteNooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
ReplyDeleteMoffat just tweeted: "Dr Who: misquotes and misunderstandings. But I'm not being bounced into
ReplyDeleteannouncing the cool stuff before we're ready. Hush, and patience."
I don't know if this makes me relieved or more nervous?
They did actually say just before the end of season 4, that they were planning on having alternating years, full season, specials, full season, specials, and so on.
