Critics Choice Awards - 8 New Shows Honored

10 Jun 2011

Seven broadcast and one cable series made the cut in the Most Exciting New Series category at the inaugural Critics’ Choice Television Awards. The category, voted by broadcast journalists who have seen the pilots and any available episodes, recognizes shows premiering after June 1, 2011. Some of the most buzzed-about new series, including NBC's Smash and Fox's New Girl and Terra Nova, made the list, while others, including CBS' Person of Interest and 2 Broke Girls and ABC's Pan Am, didn't. Here are the honorees (there will be no winner in the category, with all eight shows acknowledged at the awards show June 20):

Alcatraz - Fox - Warner Bros.
Apartment 23 - ABC - 20th Century Fox
Awake - NBC - 20th Century Fox
Falling Skies - TNT - DreamWorks
New Girl - Fox - 20th Century Fox
Ringer - CW - Warner Bros
Smash - NBC - DreamWorks/Universal Media
Terra Nova - Fox - 20th Century Fox

  1. These years pilots are truly amazing. Alcatraz, Awake, Falling Skies, and Terra Nova are on my can't-wait list.

  2. Ringer?  Fabulous!  I knew that show would get the CW some positive press and they sorely need it.

  3. I think this category is counter productive to be honest, not my cup of tea.

  4. Alcatraz, Awake, Ringer (Great !)... I am looking forward for that show.

  5. I bet at least 2 or 3 of these don't air a full season even....

  6. Totally agree! I think a few of these may be deserving of awards after they air and they earn it.... Pre-air awards are ridiculous at best and at worst set the bar too high and doom the series before it even airs!

  7. Exactly! This is good for no shows because ones who get the award (as you said) sets the bar too high and for those who don't will get less viewers as they are seen as the less exciting new series.
Seriously, you know this is wrong anyway though because neither Hell on Wheels or Homeland is on it.

  9. I'm going to try Alcatraz, Awake, Terra Nova, Falling Skies and maybe Ringer of these, but I miss Hell on Wheels!

  10. Maybe it'll premiere too late for the category, depends on what criteria the shws had to meet to be nominated at all. But usually I'd guess a show like Hell on Wheels should be included.

  11. Yay for Terra Nova and Ringer, they're the two new shows I'm most looking forward to. And it's great to see a CW show given recognition for once!

  12. Hell on Wheels premiers earlier than Smash and Awake at least, I believe?

  13. I am hoping this is the beginning of the metamorphosis into a new, hopefully more respectable network. Ringer could be good enough to help be a leading influence in future programming for CW after Dawn leaves.

  14. It was just an idea. Hell on Wheels will most likely premiere in October, maybe AMC will pair it with The Walking Dead. Maybe AMC didn't submit the pilot, it would be interesting what criteria a show had to meet.
When will Smash & Awake premiere?
