Doctor Who - Daleks to be given a rest

The Daleks are to be given "a rest" from battling Doctor Who, writer Steven Moffat has told the Radio Times.

Moffat, who is also the BBC television show's executive producer, said: "They aren't going to make an appearance for a while. We thought it was about time to give them a rest."

The Daleks were voted the scariest villains in the history of Doctor Who in a poll of fans in 2007.

Moffat said they had been defeated by the Doctor "about 400 times".

Created by Terry Nation, the Daleks are the Doctor's hugely popular enemies who have made regular appearances in the long-running science fiction show since first appearing in 1963.

Moffat said: "There's a problem with the Daleks. They are the most famous of the Doctor's adversaries and the most frequent, which means they are the most reliably defeatable enemies in the universe."

Recent episodes of the show, which stars Matt Smith as the timelord, have been criticised for being "too scary for children".

But Moffat said: "It is horror, but horror for children. It's scary in the way that a fairy story can be scary."

    I love the Daleks, but also find myself getting bored with them from time to time. Would love to see more episodes like "Blink" and love the Weeping Angels as an adversary.

    Honestly, I'm on board with a hold on all the Gallifrey/Time Lord/Dalek stuff. I think a couple years off from all of that, including The Master, would be beneficial.

    Good.

    They have been seriously over exposed since the relaunch, they've been used what, 6-7 times. We need a new recurring baddie. Like the Silence.

    I'm glad Moffat has seen the light, I thought the reasoned they were overused was because Terry Nation the man that owns them had some contract which stated they had to be used every season? Maybe I imagined that

    I prefer the new Daleks to the old (as in, the ones introduced in 'Victory of the Daleks' compared to the revamps introduced with the 9th Doctor), so I wouldn't mind seeing them again, even if it's just one episode. It could just be a teaser for something that can happen 2-3 seasons from now...

    Doesn't look like anyone here is too upset by this (I'm just nervous about what scary beasts he's going to put in their place - not just too scary for children) but Moffat stated on Twitter that he meant that the Daleks would be a given a rest for this season only. So if anyone is worried, don't worry they'll be back. I don't think there is anyway the Doctor will ever fully escape them.

    Very good decision.   Defeating them every alternate episode for several years running definitely takes a toll on the 'scare' factor.  I'm all for a Dalek rest.

    I think this is a good move for the writers. I have tons of Whovian friends (including myself) and we love Doctor Who, but we all agree that the Daleks were being way overused, especially in the 4th-5th seasons. I personally want to see more episodes with the Weeping Angels. They will forever be the scariest DW monsters, in my opinion.

    Daleks are bad guys from a by-gone era, regardless of what colour you make them, they are still tin cans with sink plungers on them. I think I can safely say that an episode with a dalek in it centrally is one I won't enjoy. The worst thing is that because they are meant to be "scary" the writing usually takes a hit as well.

    I'm cool with easing up on the Daleks.  I'm not cool with the "too scary for children" rubbish.  The new show is more sophisticated and challenging than the old one and people should adjust their viewing accordingly.
