Supernatural - JDM's Almost-Return And More

Your eyes don’t deceive,Supernatural fans. Once upon a time, in a far away land known as the Supernatural writer’s room, a man known as John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) was briefly considered for a return in tonight’s episode, which finds Sam and Dean in an alternate reality after Balthazar unsinks the Titanic.

In a chat with EW, Supernaturalexec producer Robert Singer (yes, uncle Bobby’s namesake!) tossed out this nugget of trivia along with much more in preparation for the finale episodes of the season.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So tonight’s episode: What can you say about how it sets up the rest of the season?
ROBERT SINGER: We’re really building to this last sort of run; it’s very Cas-centric, if you will. Without giving too much away, certainly this episode has this element in it of pointing out how much the boys mean to Cas. But I think, conceptually, we wanted to play with this gimmick that we’ve always toyed around with. We finally found the right vehicle for it in this episode, using Cas as the anchor for all this sort of changing history and all that. This is a concept we’ve always wanted to do. This was a good springboard for that. We spend a lot of time as we get near the end of the season with the Cas/Sam/Dean relationship. It’s the first of a four-part arc.

I’m so happy to see Ellen (Samantha Ferris) back in this episode after she died last season. Tell me about the decision to loop her back in for an episode.
We knew we wanted to have a surprise in this world. We played with a number of ideas. We played with the dad idea; we played with Jo. We sort of settled on Ellen because A) she’s a fan favorite and B) in a perfect world, she probably would be a good mate for Bobby. We were kicking around a number of possibilities, and when we got to that one everyone said, “Yeah, that’s the right one.”

You seriously considered John Winchester?!
He was on the table. God knows if we could have even gotten Jeffrey [Dean Morgan]. We didn’t know. As soon as [we] came up with Ellen, we said, “Yeah, that’s right.”

Jo wasn’t in this one, though. Any plans for her to come back?
Not before the end of the season. Next season; who knows. We have to get a next season first!

Fans aren’t worried, I think. Are you all?
We hear, “Not to worry.” We’re proceeding as if we will get a next season, but we haven’t heard anything officially yet. There’s many a slip ‘twixt the cup and the lip. So we’ll see.

Amber Bensen is coming back, though. Correct?
Yes, Amber is in an upcoming episode. She was in one I directed many many years ago now. She was great then and really did a nice job for us. We like her a lot.

Same character?
Mmhmm.

Last pressing issue: You killed Rufus, Bobby’s bff. Is he dead/gone for good?
Nobody on this show is ever dead for sure. [Laughs]

Thoughts about this:

- Too bad about JDM. Could've been so awesome.

- Yay for Cas-centric plot!

Also, here's a clip I made, a "Road So Far"-ish recap for tonight's episode.

  1. My thoughts:

Ellen > John. I'm happy with the decision.

Also, it'll be awesome to have Amber Benson's vampire back on the show! I miss her!

  2. Totally in sync with you. I am far more stoked about seeing Ellen than I would about seeing John. Ellen and Bobby together has to make for some great times.

  3. Although I love JDM, I agree with you. But as an Israeli, I'm sad they didn't bring Alona Tal back too :P

And thanks ^^. Second video I'm ever editing, but I think it turned out alright.

  4. Didn't realize this was a four-part Cas arc. Yay! I'm suddenly more excited for tonight's episode. I probably would have preferred John over Ellen, but Ellen's great too. It will be fun to see her again tonight.

  5. I SO cant wait for the cas centric one. And yeah I love Ellen more then John I'm happy. I get more sentimental seeing her cause I miss her and cried so much when she died. John wouldnt have the same effect, I like the actor not the caracter that much

  6. I regret John, but Ellen is great. Amber Benson is an awesome return, but I regret Jo. I always thought of Dean and Jo as a possible item. I think Jensen may have thought it also. Dean's proposition was not for a sister. The final kiss that Dean gave her was not sisterly. The kiss on the forehead, yes, but the lips was not. That was Jensen's idea and not in the script. yeah, I'd like Jo back.

  7. My thoughts... YAWN to the Cas stuff, he doesn't interest me, I just don't have any real emotional investment in anyone outside of Sam and Dean and I don't want them to have this massive network of Bobby and now an angel that they trust and more like Balthazar, Rachel etc...I like it when they only have one another the stakes are SO much higher then.

  8. Jo was originally slated as a love interest for Dean but fan backlash was so rampant that they wrote Ellen and Jo off and burned down the Roadhouse. I wasn't a fan either, mostly because the Jo in my head was better developed than the one in season 2. For most people, Jo was too young, too inexperienced, and far too whiny to be believable. I think the writers could have made her a much stronger character (and then did a few seasons later), but at the time she looked and sounded like a 16 year old. Seriously, she made Dean lie to her mommy. Really?

  11. Not thrilled about having the rest of the season even remotely Cas-centric. Hopefully he takes care of the war and goes on his merry little way. I know lots of Cas fans will disagree, but he just doesn't bring anything to the show anymore for me and I'm finding his parts as construed and uninteresting as I found Bela's. He worked great for the apocalypse storyline, but that's over, so the angel story needs to move on.

  13. that would be the only thing to make me stop watching this show, it was horrible when tehy tried to pair them, please writers don t ever try that again, plus evenn alona said on a conevntion couple of times that she was gla dthey iddn t since she though t they ouwld hav ekilled each otehr cause they weren t a good mathc romantically as characters, and samantha even agreed that sort of chemistry just wasn t there on screen, seriously it was creepy in abandon all hope.just cause those who hated this now have no need to be vocal about it anymore since she is gone for good doesn t mean we schanged our minds about.

  14. I would've LOVED the return of John for one episode. I always loved the dynamic between him and the boys, even if he wasn't exactly the father of the year (ok, well, he was a jerk). But I loved him with the boys!! I mean, I loved the idea of Ellen and Bobby but man, brigning John back would have been really something.

and please, no more Jo, ever!!! I enjoyed seing Ellen so much, becasue Jo wasn't there. In her case, what's dead should stay dead :P

  15. Jo and Dean was the worst possible pairing ever. Ugh. No chemistry at all. If the kiss was Jensen's idea, that's actually the first scratch on the absolutely perfect picture of him I have in my head. seriously, Jensen?
