-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by American Idol, it was an easy overnight Thursday victory for Fox, which beat second-place CBS by 2.7 household rating points. Third overall was ABC, followed by lowly NBC and The CW. The 1.8 household rating for NBC is one of its worst averages for a Thursday night in the history of the network.
Blockbuster American Idol scored a considerable 14.7 rating/24 share in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. In place of regularly scheduled Bones at 9 p.m. was special Mobbed, hosted by Howie Mandel, which dipped to third with a 6.8/11. Comparably, that put retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of American Idol (15.7/25) of only 43 percent. Consider this a "loser."
Despite facing Idol, CBS' The Big Bang Theory was on the 8 p.m. map with an 8.2/13 in the overnights. Next was relocated Rules of Engagement (#2: 5.6/ 9 at 8:30 p.m.), which is losing too much steam to likely warrant a renewal, followed by CSI (#2: 8.0/12) and The Mentalist (#1: 9.2/15) from 9-11 p.m. At this point, CBS really needs to think about what to do with CSI. Personally, I would move The Mentalist to 9 p.m. next fall into a new drama, and send CSI back to its original home, Fridays at 9 p.m., for one final season.
ABC had nothing unusual to report with its combination of Wipeout (#3: 3.9/ 6), Grey's Anatomy (#1: 9.7/15) and spin-off Private Practice (#2: 5.9/10). With the exception of canceled Perfect Couples, NBC was in all repeats last night. The network finished a distant fourth overall from 8-10 p.m. with its line-up of a repeat of Community (1.6/ 3), aforementioned Perfect Couples (1.5/ 2) and repeats of The Office (2.2/ 3) and Parks and
Recreation (1.8/ 3), and third from 10-11 p.m. with repeats of 30 Rock (1.9/ 3) and another episode of The Office (1.6/ 3). The CW capped off the evening with repeats of The Vampire Diaires (0.9/ 1) and Nikita (0.8/ 1). With one month to go before the May sweeps, expect a flood of repeats to populate April.

These comments by the Nielsen Media Research just go to show how far out of touch they are with the American public, I sure don't know who they are but the numbers do not lie. CSI is strong where it is and I really doubt the 14 million Americans are not worth counting in the grand scheme of things.I don't think Friday night would even kill this show, It has a strong following in older Adults whether Nielson recognizes it or not.

The Music Event didn't have much impact on Grey's
ReplyDeleteyeah CSI is still strong for a show which is 11 year old ! It is one of the most famous and popular show everywhere in the world, so I don't think they can say 12th season will be the last season, CSI NY and CSI Miami will end before the veteran CSI, I'm sure of it !
ReplyDeleteI agree with moving CSI to a new slot, it hasn't been a contender Thursday at 9pm for a while now. Friday or Sunday would be ideal.
ReplyDelete12,5 is not so bad, CSI is second ! I bet next week, Grey's will fall again and CSI will rise : this week ABC aired a special (musical) episode of Grey's Anatomy so I expected CSI to fall and Grey's Anatomy to gain some viewers...
ReplyDeleteI agree. I've also been reading the comments on the Grey's Anatomy musical and most commenters hated it due to the way it was scripted and directed. So it could cause GA to drop a little next week.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, the CSI writers have to take the focus off Ray and Haskell once and for all because it's alienating many, many long-time fans. I'd recommend that before moving the show to another night.
12.5 million viewers means jack shit when running a TV network, it's demos that matter. CSI may win it's time slot with viewers virtually week in week out but it is a constant 2nd and more often of late 3rd place in the all important A18-49 demo.
ReplyDeleteCBS will not be looking at how many viewers a show has when it comes to renewal time, it'll be looking at where it makes the most money in advertising revenue therefore it'll be looking at demos such as Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34.
CSI's 2.8 A18-49 rating is low for a CBS show at 9PM (I believe it has gone lower this season too) and Thursdays generate the highest advertising revenue rates of the week. CBS are wasting a prime revenue spot on a show with fading ratings.
My comments have nothing to do with quality of show only ratings
I agree CSI will not be cancelled before the spin-offs. I would venture one of the two may be in trouble and unlikely to return next fall.
