  1. Ladies and gentlemen.. introducing the new best show on TV Game of Thrones.

The credits alone are a better production than many series on network TV.

Amazing production values! Better than anything I have seen on TV... even better than Deadwood, Carnivale or Band of Brothers. To build an entire realm and make it feel ancient, lived and used is difficult and deserves note. Compare it to Merlin or Camelot and those feel like fantasy and GoT feels real. Expect awards to come next awards season.

The quality of acting is on par with the best shows on TV like Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad etc. Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage and Maisie Williams stand out to me.

The best part to me is the subtlety of the plot and direction. No beating you over the head with facts or details.

I love how Arya was introduced without a single word, 2 or 3 brief scenes and yet you know much about her. She is a tomboy, hates girly things like needlework, resents her girl sister Sansa and excels at archery (and pea flinging) and the more manly pursuits!

The thought behind using a different "color feel" for each kingdom is brilliant! It should make it easy differentiate for those that have not read the books.

I did have a few minor misgivings... the Targaryens have dark eyebrows and the ages of all the cast being moved up 3 to 10 years. Overall a very good asaptation of the book and very, very well done.

  2. I really enjoyed it - way more than I expected to. And for those detractors who think it's bad just because it's "fantasy," I will say that nothing about it was impossible in the real world with the exception of dragon's eggs. So don't knock it before you watch it.

  3. Agreed... It is more character driven than most "non-fantasy" series on TV!

  4. I assume they aged up certain characters for their upcoming sex scenes. I can’t fault TPTB for making that adjustment.

It was a brilliant start to what is certain to be a brilliant series. I cannot wait for the next episode.

  5. Right. I understand their decision, but it plays oddly as I watch it on the screen. I will adjust in an episode or two I am sure.

I watch more TV than I like to admit, but this is one of the very few series I know I will be eagerly anticipating each new episode as soon as I finish watching each week.

  6. Pretty good, although I have to admit that this episode didn't suck me into the show as for example The Killing pilot did 2 weeks ago. Sure the production value was great, acting was great (Addy, Dinklage & Harrington stood out for me), but I guess all the mysteries & conspiracies need a bit more time to unfold.

The ending was a bit predictable for me even though I haven't read the books. As soon as I saw him climb up I almost expected something like this. Nevertheless it left me hooked for next week.

All in all I was expecting a little bit more (but I guess the long hype is to blame for that), but it was a great start. And I'm really looking forward to seeing Gillen appear.

  7. The books are like that too for most people. There's no one big event that sets everything off and grabs you. To use a food analogy... he shows you the ingredients without saying what he is making, he then puts them all into a crockpot and they simmer slowly, building layers of flavor and in the end the combination and evolution of those layers give the final product a complex and balanced flavor that you weren't expecting from the initial ingredients. Yes... I am hungry...

That scene with Bran is a little predictable, but trust me... the books as a whole are not. How they translate to screen I don't know just yet...

Also, his work is not paced like many writers. It doesn't really happen so much in three acts and build as the story goes on because he writes in in various points of view... switching who is the lead in every chapter. It pays off in the end as the various parts all form a complete picture, but it does have a different feeling to it and I expect the series to be somewhat similar in that respect.

Gillen's character is pretty fun in the books! I think we will see more of him in episode 3 onward... maybe some in episode 2 though.

  8. Thanks for the input, but I was pretty fine with the pacing. As I already said, the hype made me expect a bit more, but that was my initial reaction right after the episode. The more I think about it, the better I think it was. And so far I'm glad I didn't read the books although I'm afraid that at some point in the future I won't be able to resist and start reading them.

I like Gillen as an actor and what I've read and seen so far about Littlefinger makes me very interested in him.

  9. Reading the books is that damned double edged sword! In this series you get so much more info in the books, but I think you have said in the past that you don't like knowing the books and then seeing changes to them on the screen? I hope you don't give in too soon before the first season is complete...Stay strong! :)

  10. I guess I'm pretty safe for the first season, I've currently got myself some new books which should keep me busy for a while.

  11. I rated it ok but look forward to more substance now that we have a crash course in the players. I am looking forward to next week and think this will be almost as much of a must see as HBOs True blood.

  12. Agreed. I put Great, but felt the same way. It was a LOT of setup, but the payoff should be awesome :D.

  13. I just watched Winter is coming again with a few friends that do not have HBO and one of them said something VERY telling to me. She has not read the books and when it ended she kind of paused, thought and then said "That was very well done, but what is it about?"

I hadn't thought about it since I HAVE read the books and know, but from the first episode you really can't tell what the overall plot of the series as a whole will be. After some thought I think Game of Thrones would have been better served by having a two hour premiere and having an unnamed certain big upcoming event at the end of the second hour to set the table for the entire series.

  14. Well, I haven't the read books either, and after the premiere, I'm on the fence. Like I get that their setting up characters and all that, but it needed a 2-hour premiere, that's a bad job by HBO.

  15. If you have the time and interest I would give it a few more episodes. The books are heavy on details and exposition and from the reviews I read of the series it picks up greatly after episode 3 or 4.

  16. That's a really good point. One friend told me that she loved it, but that "nothing really happened until the last couple of minutes."
