House - Amber Tamblyn Teases Her Exit

Apr 11, 2011

Amber Tamblyn has dropped some hints about her departure from House.

Tamblyn joined the show earlier this season as Martha Masters but will leave when Thirteen (Olivia Wilde) returns to Princeton-Plainsboro.
Speaking to TV Guide, Tamblyn explained that Martha will leave because of one of her actions.

"She's going to potentially break one of her own rules in a very interesting way that is going to divide her," she said. "And it's going to break Masters a little bit, which will be really interesting to see because she's kind of been unbreakable."

Tamblyn also confirmed reports that she is now working on a new project for Fox.

"Katie Jacobs, who is the executive producer of House, approached me about this idea and I loved it," she said. "Ed Burns, who is the co-creator of The Wire with David Simon, is writing it and we just sold the idea to Fox. Hopefully we'll be making a pilot. It's about a young teacher set in the world of public education in America, which is kind of a touchy subject."

  1. This sounds like a logical progression. House hasn't been able to break Masters from her dedication to the truth but House has been able to distort her perception of the truth and taught her to use it as a weapon.

  2. Wow, public education is THE subject these days. I read _work hard, be nice_ and _savage inequalities_ for school, plus I saw the lottery film. I also think many higher ups are harping on teachers, who don't make much money and do a thankless job, when they themselves wouldn't cut their pay and benefits. (I think that if public officials cut something from people, they ought to take the same percentage cut themselves. Otherwise, it's too easy for them.)
I really hope that pilot flies - as long as they don't make her character as clueless as that girl going to teach with a pearl necklace in Freedom writers. Even P.Dempsey couldn't redeem that film.
I mean, you can be naive and inexperienced without being stupid (i.e, you don't know how to break a fight, you don't know that the students are ribbing you, you don't know what punishments go down at your school... Anyone who's had a sub can come up with ways they are clueless that isn't stupid.)
Plus, they could set it in Camden, NJ :p or in East St Louis or in a charter school reluctantly sharing its space with a public school. In a place where they don't often set stories. How about the Deep South where they didn't have interracial proms till last year and where that girl had to sue to go to prom with a girlfriend? Or locating it in any working-class town with an elite college would make it interesting (Vassar/Ploughkeepsie, Yale/New Haven)... There's a lot of potential there and it's really a hot-button issue.

  3. I think that these are all great ideas! Did that girl really sue her school? That's incredible, I had no idea things were that bad in the US
