Grey's Anatomy - Episode 7.18 - Song Beneath the Song - Review

It was the moment fans had been waiting for last night as Grey's Anatomy honoured the songs that made the show famous in its musical episode "Song Beneath the Song".

The episode was very emotional as the team of surgeons at Seattle Grace battled to save Callie and her baby after being injured in a serious car crash. The episode involved different members of the cast singing their renditions of songs that had been a part of Grey's. The first song sung, "Chasing Cars", was performed by Callie, Owen and Bailey. Their version of the song fitted very well within the episode and I really enjoyed it.

Lexie gave us her rendition of "Breathe" as she tried to comfort Mark. She revealed to Mark that she doesn't hate him for what he did. Lexie and Mark are so damn cute together. I'm glad they had this scene, even though Lexie did choose Avery at the end of the episode.

Other songs covered included "Running on Sunshine", which was fab and also "Grace" which was a very beautiful performance. The cast also did a group performance of "How to Save a Life" which was very touching and a parallel to when the song was used in an earlier episode. Overall, some of the singing wasn't outstanding or great, but who cares. This episode was about honouring those songs! Some songs fitted better than others and at times I did think the music almost got in the way of the story but the whole concept went well together.

Back to the story, Mark and Arizona continued to argue throughout the episode over whether the baby or Callie should be more of a priority. Surprisingly, Arizona wanted the baby to be saved as she knew Callie could not live without it. Mark told Arizona that she "is nothing" in the family. This was heartbreaking to watch, Arizona did not deserve that. It had been building for a long time though, later on, we got to see Mark apologise to Arizona. It looks like the two of them might finally start to get on.

Addison had to deliver Callie's baby in order to save Callie. Arizona managed to revive the baby and both Callie and the baby survived. The episode ended with Callie (Sara Ramirez), singing her rendition of "The Story". Possibly my favourite song of the episode. It was so powerful and Sara has an amazing voice. It really helped sum up what the episode had been about. The episode ended with Callie opening her eyes and telling Arizona she would marry her. (Yay!)

Overall, I think the concept of the episode worked very well. It didn't quite feel like classic Grey's Anatomy but the songs used reminded us of where the show had come from and the "old days". It was great for a one-off episode but I'm not sure it would work if more episodes like it were to be done. The cast, old and new, all delivered brilliant performances and you could really feel their passion for the show and the music.

What did you guys think?

  2. Very few songs "fit". The episode was average as a musical, but would have been great as a regular episode.

  3. I thought it was cheesy somtimes as well, but I think that's allowed once in a while. and besides, how should've all the songs been introduced if not in a cheesy way? As for the songs, none of them reminded me of the "good old times". I remembered most of the songs and like most of them but sung by the cast it's just a whole other thing. As for the voices, I liked almost all of them. Sara, of course, Chyler, Jessica, Chandra. I was very surprised to hear Ellen sing, she has a cute voice. Justin Chambers was the biggest surprise, though. He didn't sing a lot, but that part he sang in "Runnin on Sunshine" was just amazing! Really good. Kevin McKidd however totally ruined every song he was part of. I don't like the guy, I hate his character, Owen, and now his voice is on my list as well. It's a shame, though, cause the other actors are all great and the songs would be way better without McKidding. The other actors didn't really sing a lot, though. Eric Dane only sang one line, which was good, Sarah Drew and Jesse Williams didn't really sing a lot, too, or maybe I just didn't recognize it. Kate Walsh sang along in "How to Save A Life", which was really great. I didn't hear her voice but to see that she's still part of it all is just awesome. Kim Raver was good, too. Now, Pickens Jr. and Dempsey didn't sing anything at all, which is okay. Eli and Henry singing was not my favourite moment, either. I would've loved to hear Lucy, Alex' girlfriend, sing, though. All in all it was acceptable, but I prefer hearing songs sung by original artists in the background just because it suits the concept of Grey's way better.

  4. I totally agree about Kevin McKidd
I'm sorry, he just has the most horrible tone to his voice - and he seemed to get literally every line in the episode, really annoyed me.
Leigh, Wilson and Ramirez really were the standout singers.

  5. In my opinion, the only person who could really sing was Ramirez. Fair enough the others tried. But totally agree re: Owen. I cringed at all his lines (which were far too many).

  6. Chandra Wilson can really sing too, admittedly not exactly excellently showcased in this episode.

  7. I loved the episode.& it was so impressive how they incorporated the songs with the dialogue. The cast did a great job singing especially, Sara, Kevin, Chylar, Chandra, Ellen, Justin, & Capshaw. It was a change of pace & they nailed it. Patrick & Ellen's elevator scene was so touching and sad. It was a great episode well written & acted by everyone.

I already knew that Sara Ramirez could sing, but I was surprised when I heard Chyler Leigh. I love her version of "Breathe (2 a.m.)". And there was too much Kevin McKidd in that episode. I like Owen, but I prefer other male cast member to sing too, and not only one line.

  9. I enjoyed the episode but as some have said I wish the other male actors would of sang more. I especially liked Justin voice...

  10. I actually didn't even know this was a musical episode. Imagine my surprise when they all started singing!

Anyway, I think in terms of Musical episodes, Grey's succeeded in trying to make it as realistic and "apart of the show" as possible. Most people didn't like that characters were talking over songs but, for me, it added to the tension. I'd read zero spoilers so didn't know if Callie would live or die.

    Superb.
