Potential great news for Criminal Minds fans: Co-star A.J. Cook is in talks to return to the CBS crime drama next season as a regular, and she may be joined by Paget Brewster.
Wow! That is RIDICULOUS! If they wanted to sty they should have taken pay cuts or time cuts in the first place.... but to play out multi episode goodbye arcs and then say "PSYCH!... I'm coming back" is just lame.
That is EXACTLY how I take it too. She wanted to show she could be a bigger role on a different series and it didn't play out well for her.... so now she will come back likely for less cash. All the while she could have taken that deal in the first place.
I completely agreed about their decision for JJ honestly. Prentiss I did not think needed to leave.
I thought that 2 episodes ago was one of the best CM episodes in more than a year and that was without JJ or Prentiss at all. So I don't think this is a caving in by TPTB at all. They always had this offer on the table for Prentiss(Brewster), but she was the one that did not like it. She was the one that did not want to take less face time or money. Every network or creative team has the right (and arguably the obligation) to cut costs to make their series more appealing for renewal.
Exactly! The sudden major focus on Garcia or the addition of the new character Ziva made it even more uninteresting to me. It's rather frustrating that CBS was trying to 'fix' something that was not even broken but worked just fine the way it was.
I knew that this was going to be like what happened with Adam Rodriguez (Eric Delko) on CSI: Miami last year!
He left the show as a series regular but had some guest appearances during the show's 8th season, then came back as series regular at the start of the show's 9th season.
Now, the same thing might happen with A.J. Cook and Paget Brewster on Criminal Minds!
I never followed CSI:Horatio but I wonder why Delko was let go? Money or personal issues? IF it was a cost concern or salary negotiations I would be interested to know what he was hired back at compared to what he was let go....
Likewise I will be interested to see the comparable salaries of Cook and Brewster. If they come back for less I understand the move COMPLETELY since that is what CBS wanted to start with, but if they come back with raises.... then the logic is lost on me!
If I remember correctly, he left because they couldn't come to terms financially. After landing just a few guest appearances on various TV shows (like Psych and Ugly Betty) during his absence, he took what was offered and came back.
I would assume so. At first she was hired full-time, then a 3 episode arc, then more time when Brewster sleanbed towards leaving, but she really has not seemed to be a full time player yet the way they have used her. So I would hope they let her go if Prentiss is back.
Well A.J. Cook didn't get a choice in the matter. She was forced out. And at first Paget didn't either, but I guess somewhere along the lines they changed their minds...my guess is after she was already picked up for the pilot.
They don't have any control over the arcs or the creative decisions. And as for "they should have taken pay cuts..." Really? Would you take a pay cut at your job? I wouldn't.
No CBS offered her the choice before hand or she would not have had the chance to do a pilot. She could take a smaller role and hunt for a new pilot, leave altogether or stay on more as a part-time player.
If anything her willingness to come back is a result of her pilot not working out too well... not CBS hearing she got a pilot and panicking.
Um.. yes I would if it meant the show staying on. Just like athletes restructure contracts all the time to allow the team to spend money elsewhere and make the team better.... Likewise many athletes or actors take less money for roles because they want to be part of a project that cannot pay them "what they think are worth".
Any show can cut a role back and chose to pay an actor less at the next contract negotiation. That's business... and good business sense at that if they need to cut the budget.
So if I worked for a business that needed to make cuts and I was offered part-time at less money or leaving altogether I would NOT fault the business. If I needed the job I would stay on for less, if I thought I could get employment elsewhere I may leave. Much like Brewster tried to do. It's just business.
I think Adam benefitted a little more than that so I wouldn't call CBS the champion in that negotiations. He now writes and directs episode. He already did one this season and there's talk on him doing more so I think that was part of their new deal. Pretty nice for Adam if you ask me.
As for Paget and AJ coming back I'm torn between really wanting them to return and really wanting them to snub their noses to the CBS executives lol. The show definitely is not the same without them.
Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god! I REALLY hope they come back! That would make me SO happy! :D I miss them on the show (Paget especially) it just ain't the same without them /:
To Aydrian: Can I just say that it wasn't Paget or A.J's decision to leave Criminal Minds. A.J was fired and Paget was pushed out. Both actresses were enjoying their roles on the series and had no intention of leaving until they were forced too. So really you should be asking CBS and the Criminal Minds writers to make up their minds.
I personally hope that both incredible women come back since CBS and the writers have clearly realised what a colossal mistake they made getting rid of them both.
does anyone else think that the girl who came in to replace JJ whose father was a serial killer (i don't remember her name right now) looked exactly like JJ?? like, only from some angles but boy! in those angles i was sure she was JJ!!! did anyone else see this or is it just me missing JJ?
This is something i've been following for awhile. Whats been played out in the media to date:
Neither of them had a choice initially, it was a 'decision from higher up' that had nothing to do with the writers or cast. The initial press release referenced financial reason for not renewing AJ's contract & shortening Paget's roll to write her out by end of season. That was quickly retracted to be replaced with the usual BS of new creative direction / slimming it down for a 'leaner meaner team'.
Fans threw a hissy fit with the way it was dealt with - enter a petition. Even members of the cast signed, while commenting via tweets etc general expressions of displeasure & bafflement. By this stage AJC was gone, but CBS was still catching some serious flack. At that point they offered PB the option to either A) resume her normal contract or B) keep the current one they had shafted her with so she could pursue pilots, but with the option to return if she didn't get a pilot or it never got picked up. Because CBS changed their stance & decided they wanted her back - CBS & its affiliates refrained from offering her her any new rolls.
She got cast for a pilot. Now mentions of these offers for both of them. What also remains to be seen however is what will happen to Thomas Gibson and Shemar Moore at end of season when their contracts run out. Currently they are still 'in talks' with the network.
You'd work 8 day weeks, 17-18 hours a day, with contract restrictions (essentially non competition clauses) which basically give you NO LIFE through the shooting season... only to have half your job cut from under you AND not really be able to take on another job because of the contract you're bound to?
Riiiiight.
Unless you've worked in this industry, you don't really have a leg to stand on to make comments like this. Fans have an off-kilter notion of "saving the show" and "do what you have to do for your show". This is a business. And this is a life. There comes a point where you have to do what you have to do to (a) save your sanity (b) have a career (c) do what's right for both.
The suits often look to cut costs and will make decisions that affect an actor. The RIGHT move for the actor is to pull out of the project. That's what Brewster did, and that was the right decision. It allowed her to go elsewhere. Now, the suits are coming back with a new offer, and she's free to decide whether or not to come back. In the end, the fans win. In the end, SHE wins if she wants to return to the show. Walking away was the right decision. Being offered what was essentially a half season with a schedule that would impair her ability to pick up anything else (it's not like she can easily "guest" elsewhere, what she would need is a new pilot) and come back next season with another reduced load.
The ones who REALLY lose from all this? The writers, the showrunners and those who have creative say on the direction of the show. It's a freakin' mess. Trust me. Damage control is a pain in the left buttcheek. You spend a lot of time having to undo and adjust around this kind of mess. Or around actors who flip out. Or... yeah. Now that? That is MY field, and why I need to buy shares in a pharmaceutical company because man, I eat my weight in ibuprofen weekly.
If I were a writer that spent 6 weeks saying goodbye to Prentiss and heard rumours she may be coming back now.... I would be irked... seriously. So I understand and agree. I think CBS made the right decision cutting JJ and cutting back Prentiss's role, and Brewster made the right decision to leave. Either of them returning would be right also... so it is a win/win/win/win issue.... except for the creative team.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I really wish they would make up their minds. Leave or stay, choose one!
ReplyDeleteI guess Brewster doesn't like the chances of her pilot getting picked-up.
ReplyDeleteThis whole departure-return game just makes the CBS look like idiots.
ReplyDeleteBest news in a very long time. Criminal Minds is not the same without them!
ReplyDeleteis thomasgibson and shemar moore coming back
ReplyDeleteWow! That is RIDICULOUS! If they wanted to sty they should have taken pay cuts or time cuts in the first place.... but to play out multi episode goodbye arcs and then say "PSYCH!... I'm coming back" is just lame.
ReplyDeletehope they both will come back - it would be my wish come true :) please come back - both :)

ReplyDeletegreat news
ReplyDeleteI almost feel bad for Rachel Nichols now. Almost.
ReplyDeleteAlmost being the key word. Maybe she can join Suspect Behavior.
ReplyDeleteI think the powers that be can thank themselves for this. After all, they started this ball rolling.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more. The show seems to have a big whole that just can't be filled.
ReplyDeleteNow this makes me HAPPY!
ReplyDeleteI completely agreed about their decision for JJ honestly. Prentiss I did not think needed to leave.

Oh thank goodness, please CBS fix this. The show is pretty dull without them.
ReplyDeleteExactly! The sudden major focus on Garcia or the addition of the new character Ziva made it even more uninteresting to me. It's rather frustrating that CBS was trying to 'fix' something that was not even broken but worked just fine the way it was.

What the devil is CBS's logic?
Ziva isn't on Criminal Minds, she is on NCIS.
ReplyDeleteI hope they do, it woulod be incredible!
ReplyDeleteI never followed CSI:Horatio but I wonder why Delko was let go? Money or personal issues? IF it was a cost concern or salary negotiations I would be interested to know what he was hired back at compared to what he was let go....

ReplyDeleteSo it worked for CBS the first time... I can see why it went down this way for CM too....
ReplyDeletefinally! The show just hasn't been the same without them :)
ReplyDeleteIn my humble opinion all this is about money, nothing else... anyway so if brewster and cook are back does that mean they will let Nichols go?
ReplyDeleteI would assume so. At first she was hired full-time, then a 3 episode arc, then more time when Brewster sleanbed towards leaving, but she really has not seemed to be a full time player yet the way they have used her. So I would hope they let her go if Prentiss is back.
ReplyDeleteThank ggod. This is the best news I could have imagined. Why CBS had to make us to go through all this hazzle I will never understand though.
ReplyDeleteSorry, got her name wrong. I meant Ashley Seaver the new FBI agent whose father was a serial killer. She's portrayed by actress Rachel Nichols.
ReplyDeleteWell A.J. Cook didn't get a choice in the matter. She was forced out. And at first Paget didn't either, but I guess somewhere along the lines they changed their minds...my guess is after she was already picked up for the pilot.
ReplyDeleteWow CBS caught on a little late didn't you? But I guess better late than never...
ReplyDeleteThey don't have any control over the arcs or the creative decisions. And as for "they should have taken pay cuts..." Really? Would you take a pay cut at your job? I wouldn't.

ReplyDeleteI hope it's true I would love for A.J Cook and Paget Brewster to come back.
ReplyDeleteIt would be awesome to have them both back!! :D
