Starz is developing The Brink, a supernatural crime drama project written by The Grudge scribe Stephen Susco and executive produced by Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski through his Blind Wink Prods. The Brink is based on J.C. Hutchins’ book Personal Effects: Dark Art. The interactive supernatural thriller, which features various online extensions, is described by CSI creator Anthony Zuiker in his review as "equal parts House, CSI, and The X-Files." It chronicles art therapist Zach Taylor’s investigation into the life and madness of Martin Grace, an accused serial killer who claims to have foreseen, but not caused, his victims’ deaths. Blind Wink's Jonathan Krauss is executive producing in addition to Verbinski.
Verbinski -- whose latest film, the Johhny Depp-starring animated adventure Rango, is riding high at the box office -- first ventured into television in the fall with another supernatural drama. Titled Magical Law, the project, written by Pirates scribe Terry Rossio, was set up at Fox and followed specialized cops and lawyers prosecuting otherworldly crimes.

Sounds kind of interesting, but I'm not a big fan of Starz per se. They tend to use to strain after effect in their shows like using slow-motion violence.
ReplyDeleteWell Camelot has not won me over yet... have my doubts still . Spartacus was ok at best for me. Good production value and decent actors, but way over the top with ridiculous effects and sex. I did LOVE Party Down and Pillars of the Earth. But for some reason I think of Spartacus as a "STARZ series" and the others a just on STARZ.
ReplyDeleteI guess mostly it will depend on which parts of each series they add to the mix!
it's great news that more and more filmmakers are more interested in making tv shows. Since the quality of the big Hollywood blockbusters is getting more cliched and harrowing than ever, the TV show format can make them spread their wings.
ReplyDeleteAnd from the description of the Starz show, it seems like after Spartacus, Pillars and Camelot....the station is getting darker and darker in the mood of their series. I fancy this direction!
That's EXACTLY what I meant by a "STARZ series"... Spartacus. The slow-motion blood spray was cliche and gratuitous. I am not anti-sex at all, but I would prefer a 50 minute show to not have 10-15 minutes of sex in it. Time wasted that could have been better spent on real plot and still accomplished the conveyance of sexuality.
ReplyDeleteDespite its poor rating one of the main reasons Party Down was cancelled, because Starz didn't think it's a good fit for the image they want to have for their network.
ReplyDeleteOH ..... Happy St. Patrick's Day to any of those with the green in their blood.... or the desire to have green beer in their stomachs!
ReplyDeleteIt's called a "style" of directing. It's the show's style. It was always advertised as "300 The Series" so I don't know what people really expected.
ReplyDeleteBesides, one show doesn't make the entire network.
I don't have issue with how it is shot directly.... I just personally don't care for it. It's a well done series and others can like it if they chose of course! And like I stated. I FEEL like Spartacus is a a STARZ STYLE series. I don't know it to be the basis for every future series of theirs.
ReplyDeleteNo question about it that this is a style of directing, but to me in this case seems a bit like cheap sensationalism.
ReplyDeleteAnd even though I haven't seen a lot of Camelot yet, it kind of has a similar feeling to it and because of that I'm not a big fan of this network yet.
