-Ratings Breakdown:
There was very little of note, as usual, on this first Friday in March. CBS led the troops at an average 8.56 million viewers, and NBC was No. 1 among adults 18-49, with a 1.6 rating/5 share. Needless to say, all is not well on troubled Friday.
CBS relocated The Defenders, which wraps up its season (or series) run next week, finished first at 8 p.m. with 8.58 million viewers and a 1.5 rating/6 share among adults 18-49. Up next in the time period (following March Madness basketball) is the debut of dramedy Chaos on April 1.
Next on CBS was a repeat of veteran CSI: NY at 8.67 million viewers (#1) and a second-place 1.4/ 5 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m., followed by a repeat of Blue Bloods with an almost identical 8.44 million viewers (#1) and a 1.5/ 4 in the demo (#2) at 10 p.m. Although older-skewing CSI: NY remains an admirable performer on low HUT level Friday, CBS is unlikely to pick-up all three aging CSIs for 2011-12 and this is the one likely to go.
NBC’s already renewed Who Do You Think You Are? finished second in the 8 p.m. hour, with 6.13 million viewers and a 1.2/ 4 among adults 18-49. That led into another two-hour installment of Dateline, with averaged 6.76 million viewers and a 1.5/ 5 in the demo from 9-11 p.m., building by half-hour as follows:
Dateline (NBC)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 6.05 million (#2), A18-49: 1.4/ 5 (#1)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 6.47 million (#2), A18-49: 1.6/ 5 (#1)
10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 7.14 million (#2), A18-49: 2.0/ 6 (#1)
10:30 p.m. – Viewers: 7.39 million (#2), A18-49: 2.2/ 7 (#1)
There was nothing positive of note at ABC with its combination of Supernanny (Viewers: #3, 3.33 million; A18-49: #4, 0.9/ 3), which officially concludes on March 18, Primetime: What Would You Do? (Viewers: #3, 3.47 million; A18-49: #3, 1.1/ 4) and 20/20 (Viewers: #3, 4.75 million; A18-49: #3, 1.2/ 4). Fox filled the evening with The 42nd Annual NAACP Image Awards, which scored a typically bland 2.34 million viewers (#4) and a last-place 0.6/ 2 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. And The CW aired repeats of Smallville (Viewers: #5, 2.34 million; A18-49: #3, 1.0/ 3) and Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 2.22 million; A18-49: #4, 1.0/ 3).

I am so hoping CBS renews "The Defenders". Really love this show — and I really didn't expect to! But they've got me hooked. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the legal genre. Anyone else agree the Belushi/O'Connell combination is surprisingly enticing?
ReplyDeleteHope Fringe is cancelled. :D
ReplyDeleteHey! :( That's not fair. You can't wish a show cancelled just because it's competition to yours.
ReplyDeleteyeah! it should be cancelled.
ReplyDeleteFringe it's so much better ! What Smallville?, Supernatural! Fringe all the fucking timee! ;)
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of Fringe, but I don't want it to be cancelled just because I love Supernatural. That's not fair.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. =]
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteIt's only March and you just made the most ridiculous comment of the year!
This one will be hard to beat......
Supernatural is staying steady I guess...
ReplyDeleteI think Fringe is a better made show than The CW series, but both Smallville and Supernatural are good and very watchable.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's an adolescent way of thinking. The ONLY excuse for wanting a show cancelled is if it was in direct competition with another. For example, the battle between Lie to Me, Human Target, The Chicago Code and Fringe; those shows are in direct competition for future seasons, so it would make sense if a fan of Fringe wanted Chicago Code canceled, or if a Human Target fan wanted Lie to Me canceled.
ReplyDeleteI for one lost interest in Fringe back with S2, so whether it gets renewed or cancelled I could care less. But I'm not going to wish it to burn just because I love Supernatural more.
I am kind of bummed that the ratings for SPN didn't rise because that episode was CRAZY AWESOME. I just hope all those fans that stopped watching SPN back when the episodes were "so/so" to "good" return to watch the later episodes that were "great" to "awesome". The ratings were the highest when the episodes were at their "worst" (nothing supernatural is bad IMO, even "Bugs" was watchable to me), and vice versa. I hope after this spring hellatus, more viewers decide to tune back in. Either way though, SPN is doing great with regards to it's network rank.
Thank you for making the SPN fandom look bad. -.-
ReplyDeleteGraaaaah!!!! I wanted it to go up to around a 2.5 ><!!! Ah well, lol, it could have been worse, it could have gone down instead of risen just a hair. Wonder what happened with Smallville? I don't watch it so I have no idea if it's getting worse. Random viewership drop?
ReplyDeleteHonestly? Supernatural's ratings have been slowly decreasing over the years (when it was still on the WB back in S1 it had really good numbers- once it averaged 5-6 mil in viewers if I recall correctly.) I'm just grateful that it has remained relatively stable ratings-wise.
ReplyDeleteAs for Smallville- I have no idea :( I used to watch it way back in the early seasons. But from watching the ratings trend compared to Supernatural over the years- Smallville has also decreased slowly over the years. It is sad because it is Smallville's final season and it would have been nice if they had more viewers.
I love Supernatural, have yet to watch Fringe. But any Sci-Fi show that can stay on the air can only be good for the genre. I just wish they didn't come on at the same time.....
ReplyDeleteYep, It did hit those highs in its early days.
ReplyDeleteIt had a season 1 ratings average of 3.81 million with a 1.4 rating according to Wikipedia. That was its highest season, but 9 episodes in the season (all in the first 12 episodes) were over 5 million viewers. After that it was mostly in the 3.75 to 4.25 range. After season 1 no episode has hit 4 million viewers. Of course all info is only for US viewership.
Yeah, I know. Oddly enough those 9 episodes were when Supernatural was paired with Gilmore Girls-- a little shocking in my opinion that it actually went down in ratings after it moved to be paired with Smallville since I think that the pairing works better, but like I said it is my opinion.
ReplyDeleteAnd it is sad that it hasn't managed to hit 4 million viewers since it moved to the CW. But then most of the CW shows don't get 4+ million viewers on the first viewing anyway that I know of.
It is upsetting that getting renewed and picked up ultimately depends on US viewership and not on international sells, etc. But it is understandable I guess because the networks don't think of how a show does internationally rather whether or not it will bring in the US viewers since they are networks which operate in the US first and foremost.
How extremely childish of you. This is essentially the TV equivalent of "oh look a band I like is nominated for a Grammy, I hope all the other nominees die."
ReplyDeletePathetic.
Yes I can,but I'm not a hater. :P It's just my opinion. xD No way FOX will listen to me! xD
ReplyDeleteSurvival of the fittest hun,not adolescent-thinking...survival of the fittest....that rule applies to TV shows too you know. xD
ReplyDeleteDid you also notice that all CW shows have been loosing viewers over the years? I would say not just the shows but the network as a whole has dropped viewers. Look at the average ratings when the CW was launched and then compare it to now. Sure, Supernatural's ratings are down but compared to the other CW shows and assuming that Friday is considered the day with most people going out, the show is doing OK.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget that this year Spn is also on friday, worst day of tv for every networks, so to be one of the highest show of the CW and still playing on friday it's good
ReplyDeleteAnd hard to based the renew of the seasons based on international sell, cause how can you judge the Season 6 on their DVDs if they're not out in the US 'til september and not out in many country before the year after.....while you have to renew or not by the end of the winter
Why? Because you don't like it? ;D God, I hate GG but so far the CW hasn't done me the favor of cancelling it. But I don't care because I can always choose not to watch a show. Lol
ReplyDeleteOf course, he CAN wish for it. It's just not very nice. Lol
ReplyDeleteYou're kidding? A FOX show having a bigger budget than a CW show, it's shocking. Lol
ReplyDeleteWhy are we talking about Fringe? There was no new episode.
ReplyDeleteThen you lead a very protected life. Lol
ReplyDeleteI hope the CW is the most watched network next season and the logo gets a different color, a girly pink.
Did I beat it?
I'm aware of that fact and that's why in my original comment-- I said that I'm glad that Supernatural's ratings are relatively steady. It seems not to be influenced as much by the fact that Fringe has also been moved to Fridays.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't judging S6 rather I was making a comment as a result of being a part of the fandom for 5 years and noting that the CW has the power of renewal and not Warner Bros. who produce the dvds, etc and they care about the ratings that come from the US viewship (and to be honest, they look at the ratings of the age group more than they look at the actual numbers.)
In addition, I was just stating the unfortunate fact that compared to the ratings of S1, the subsequent ratings of the following seasons including the episodes of S6 which have aired so far have been low.
As for whether or not there is going to be S7-- I think that there is a huge possibility that there will be a S7 because Supernatural does great for the CW and it doesn't look like they will have something that can replace Supernatural that easily.
I agree with you. I would have thought that by now, the CW would be doing better than it is given that it's been on the air for almost 5-6 years now. Who knows? Maybe the CW will surprise us...
ReplyDeleteSupernatural is doing great and honestly, I think that there is a high possibility for S7.
I laugh at your attempt to make the most ridiculous comment. Here's mine.
ReplyDeleteI KNOW that the CW will be the most watched network, not just next season, but for 500 years. CBS will also cancell every crime procedural on the network and begin to air sci-fi tv shows. Charlie Sheen will quit every dastardly aspect of his life as well.
It's in the bag.
My attempt...
ReplyDeleteI bet in 2012 people will stop watching "reality TV"; the new CW president will win The Nobel Peace Prize by uniting the world thru Supernatural - promoting it, funding it and renewing it for 5 more years; Charlie Sheen will be "Born Again" and become TV history's greatest and most profitable tele-evangelist; Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh will join Greenpeace and start a network to promote environmental ideas; and procedural TV will go the way of The Dodo and serial TV will take over.
they don't have the choice to look at the age ratings ^^; The 18 to 40-something group is the harder group to get in touch with on tv, harder than 50 YO and + people. So the more you have young people watching, the more you'll get pay for the commercials.
ReplyDeleteNot saying it's fair, but it's buisness ^^; ....I hope there was a way to count international people, but the sell of DVDs can't never count....maybe an internet ratings would be great in the futur for ratings :)
Guys, guys, guys. Play nice.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope that Supernatural and Fringe do battle on Fridays for many years to come :)
I wonder if (and this is for any/every show out there) if drops in ratings are inevitable because of people ending up ditching their Nielsen boxes as they get to TVs, or start most of their TV viewing online. Everyone is steadily migrating to online viewing. Makes you wonder how accurate Nielsen ratings are. I'd gladly watch commercials online if that meant it counted my viewing. It's such an outdated system.
ReplyDeleteLOL pink!
ReplyDeleteForget that. Let's hope they change time slots so that people can watch both live. I love Supernatural. I've watched Fringe (every episode in seasons 1 & 2). I hope they both survive. The only show I am actively rooting against being renewed is Shedding for the Wedding - well all reality TV I guess.
ReplyDeleteI loved Fringe at 8 and spn at 9 or vise versa THAT would be A great friday night (or any other night *cough* )
ReplyDeleteRepeats of Smallville and supernatural?.... yeah
ReplyDeleteI've been reading this (down)
ReplyDeletehttp://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2011/03/01/cw-when-all-ratings-fall-its-not-bad-news-for-individual-shows-just-the-network/84053
And then I read this and....
??? 0_o this is the last time I'm checking ANY ratings lols, making me all excited and nervous and queasy for Supernatural. And I think just because we don't watch or like a certain show *cough (The F word) we shouldn't wish it bad. GO NCIS teehee!!
smallville is on fridays, which wouldnt really get 3 million veiwers coz ratings are not very good on fridays, besides the show is doning very well coz its on fridays
ReplyDeleteif the sow was aired on thursdays then it would of have 3.5+ millions besides many people are watching smallville online these days, and the show itself is still top notch
Oh for the love of sanity - Fringe and Supernatural are not in competition. Neither one will effect the other's cancellation or renewal chances. In fact, I doubt anyone on this site has a chance to effect either show because most people do not have a Nielsen box and therefore are not counted. The fact that Supernatural scored essentially the same without Fringe on as it did with Fringe on shows that Fringe does not effect Supernatural's viewer numbers. If Fringe has basically the numbers next week when facing a SPN rerun, could we please stop the baiting between shows? One show has nothing to do with the other. I hope they both return in different time slots if only to keep from having the same conversation all the time.
ReplyDeleteEverything, as a whole seems to be dropping viewers. Whether it's because there are so many channels these days that naturally specific show ratings will drop or because there are so many ways to see said shows.
ReplyDeletewhat do they mean repeat? , it was a new episode of SPN last night. And Then There Were None.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind it being cancelled, but not because I dislike it. I just want Supernatural renewed. There will never be a comparison in my opinion. I watch Supernatural every time it is on. I dvr Vampire Diaries. My total interest in the CW is there. I'd include Smallville but I'm looking at renewals. I love Leverage and It's renewed and filming. Hawaii Five-O is a must. The rest of the shows I used to watch, I have to wait til they are on dvd and get them on Netflix. Between work and school, I try to to write. I don't have a lot of time for television, so I'm selective. I'm behind on everything except Supernatural. I never miss an episode.
ReplyDeleteUmm on the board above it said that CW aired repeats of Smallville and SN, but they were both new episosdes. Someone fix that.
ReplyDeleteSo true. And I agree SPN and Fringe aren't in competition...unfortunately those that want to cause baiting between the shows will continue. The argument between the two shows is like the networks and Nielsen ratings...out of date, irrelevant, and not known to act rationally.
ReplyDeleteI tried and another person tried to get MB to correct; we were ignored but M Berman did come back with a response for half hour breakdowns of CSI:NY and Blue Bloods on the same page (1) of our requests to edit. I've seen MB respond to corrections before so basically our request was ignored.
ReplyDeleteI know. I was saying the same thing.
ReplyDeleteIt is a very outdated system and you would think that with all the new technology they would have upgraded the system by now but they haven't.
ReplyDeleteI hope they return as well. It's the most refreshing legal show in so many years.
ReplyDeleteI don't give up that easily.
ReplyDeleteI kidnapped an angel to make a trip to the future and I know that the CW will put Supernatural back on Thursday 8 pm to fight 'American Idol' and our show will beat the crap out of Idol ratingwise. It will be watched by bezillion and bezillion of viewers. And at 9 Eric Kripke's new show 'Octocobra' will air and it will be...fantastic Muhahaha!
I stole your bag! ;D
Yes pink! ;D Don't laugh, it's a shy color! It will blush and turn into red!
ReplyDeleteI think their target demo is the problem. They seem to have lost most of their casual viewers and ABC family is beating their ex-No. 1 women demo show Gossip Girl with Pretty Little Liars! They need to broaden their audience! Vampire Diaries is a good start, it has a female soap operish focus, but it also attracts other viewers and it creates as much buzz as GG back in the day.
ReplyDeleteThere we go again with this whole last night's winners and losers thing....you really start pissing me off.....
ReplyDeleteAnd who the f*ck are you again? :D Don't remember asking for your opinion,so get the f out, please. :D
ReplyDeleteYour welcome?...I din not...I just voiced my opinion you know...
ReplyDeleteHmm...not!The one who sounds pathetic is you, because f*ckers like you make most people afraid of publicly expressing their opinions...what is childish here is your thesis against a person you don't even know...and yet because the internet offers a form of anonymity, you call me immature and give an example that shows just how immature and narrow,-minded YOU are...
ReplyDeleteDude, please restrain from such comments. We try to keep a more friendly approach on this website.
ReplyDeleteWe take that article from another website where someone puts the time in to express his opinion on what the ratings mean.
ReplyDeletePlease try to refrain from the negative comments in this manner towards people who are offering their opinion. We like discussions on SpoilerTV but we don't accept abuse such as this.
I don't even want to know what 'Shedding for the Wedding' is...
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should tell that to the rest of the members...THEY are the ones who started this,THEY should be the ones to whom you should talk about keeping the website clean.I have every intention to keep it clean, but I also want people to respect my opinions just as I respect theirs...something which is NOT happening as you may have noticed...
ReplyDeleteI think such a controversial statement as wishing a show would be cancelled would always create a discussion.
ReplyDeleteDirectly Insulting and swearing at other members of our community is not acceptable
Same goes for them.Doesn't matter,it's my opinion.I don't like Fringe,so I want it cancelled and that's all there is to it...Same thing happened to buddytv...I said that I was in favor of a show and ppl started thumbing me down...SO,I decided to never comment on either website ever again.Nice to have talked to you.
ReplyDeleteI like you Darq :) you were right to say that.
ReplyDeletefringe is on at 8 then supernatural at 9??
ReplyDeleteThe less you know the better off you are. Truly sucky idea on an already sucky netlet.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a load of bull. That's actually hilarious. And if you're gonna pull the cliché opinion card well guess what? I was only expressing my opinion right back atcha :D
ReplyDeleteOh well, no biggy. Fringe is a favourite among many FOX execs, and Supernatural is approaching an end it should have hit seasons ago. Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the next season of Supernatural was announced to be the last, that's if there even is a next season, but Fringe on the other hand is sticking around for now, sorry to disappoint you dear :D
I "wish" it was like that.
ReplyDeleteI think it's worth watching the first 5min to be tromatise
ReplyDeleteI hope you never have children. The end.
ReplyDeleteThere are different ways to express your opinion: a) a mature, and tactful way, and b) a childlike way. When you express yourself so immaturely, you reveal aspects about yourself that expose your persona. The thing is, we don't have to "know" you, because through your use of words and overall attitude as reflected in your comments, we know enough.
ReplyDeleteOMG People why ague over a t.v show it is just a tv show at the end of the day. It is the most stupid thing ever!. I dont like The Fringe , but to all out there who do i hope it goes on for them . We all have different opinion's but its sad to argue over it .
ReplyDeleteI can comment! Yay! Sorry, it's the little things that make me happy! Thanks, Andy!
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Sue :)
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with what Classified said but you aren't helping either. How about we wish that both shows return. Right now, it is highly likely that Supernatural will have at least another season if not more. I hope Fringe returns as well. Wishing or declaring that either show will be cancelled says nothing for the fandom on either side. SpoilerTV is a pleasant place to go without flame wars. Let's keep it that way please.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to be completely misinterpreting my side on this. I'm not wishing cancellation on Supernatural at all, I'm just saying how I feel the show is going as a former Supernatural watcher myself. Right now I couldn't care less about SPN, I try not to indulge these petty competitions but Classified was just being completely ignorant in my opinion. Sorry if I didn't handle it in a way you approve of, whoever you are.
ReplyDeleteThis argument is tiresome. I respect all people's opinions, so I am not arguing to anybody. I am going to say that we all need to take a breather and lay it rest. Resuming it is pointless - noone is suddenly going to accept they are wrong and it will only leave more people insulted. It's done.
ReplyDeleteMost sensible comment I've seen on this page, thank you for grounding things. My apologies to the site and visitors for contributing to the mess.
ReplyDeleteThank you. :)
