Another great question, and there are many to choose. I'd love to see graphic novels like Preacher, Sandman etc turned into a TV Series. However if I had to pick one it would be Y: The Last Man.

Y: The Last Man is a comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra published by Vertigo beginning in 2002. The series is about the only man to survive the apparent simultaneous death of every male mammal (barring the same man's pet monkey) on Earth. I would love to see a proper adaptation for Spawn. I occasionally read other comic books in the past, but only Spawn was able to totally capture me in his entirety. It's simply Todd McFarlane's masterpiece (and for everyone who doesn't know - he's the guy who created Venom, the imho best Spiderman villain).
ReplyDeleteThere already has been a pretty bad movie and an animated HBO series, but it really is a great comic that I always thought deserved better than that, because it has everything I like in a good drama. There's this battle between the forces of good and evil and Spawn/Al Simmons, originally planned to be a fighter for evil, decides not to play by anyone's rules and gets caught up in the middle of this ancient battle. He's also a very troubled character who keeps getting haunted by his decisions and his past. There are also gripping storylines about the life Spawn had to leave behind, a lot of awesome supporting characters as well as kick-ass villains and side-kicks. There's a lot of great character development going on, it has thrilling storylines, but also funny moments.
It’s such a rich story and although I don't actually believe it'll happen, I think that's a comic worth adapting.
I'm going to take some liberty here because the question also mentions books, and I don't read comics but I do read novels. I'd like to recommend the wonderful novel Olive Kitteridge, by Elizabeth Stout. Olive is one of a large cast of characters, living in Maine, whose lives intermingle. Stout's novel is actually a collection of short stories, each centering on different residents of the town. The show would be a cross between Desperate Housewives and Lost, with lots of different characters, and they each get centric episodes. Not science fiction, just very human.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see A Series of Unfortunate Events. Even as mini-series. The movie was nice, but it only revoled around the 3 first books out of 13, and I think there's a lot of potential for this. Would be nice if they can keep Jim Carrey as Count Olaf, too :P

ReplyDeleteComics that could all make excellent series... Sandman, Preacher, Fables, Marvels. And those first three, there have actually been efforts to do just that, but the plans never went through for any of them.
ReplyDeleteThere are many it's true, but if I had to choose just one I would go with Malorie Blackman's Noughts and Crosses. Brilliant concept exploring racism in a contemporary context by reversing it.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many books and manga that would be great live-action shows. Most comic book adaptations forget to adapt to the new medium and use realism to their advantage. But I would say I would love to see 'X' by Clamp. If for no other reason than to have some kind of conclusion after waiting years to see it finished. *sigh* Most books are great for movies, it just depends on the director to transfer it well.

I can't come up with any books right now..I think most books work better as movies...

As a middle school librarian, there are almost too many good YA novels to choose from, but the first two that popped to mind are Heist Society by Carter and The Last Thing I Remember by Klavan. Of course, I'm really looking forward to seeing The Hunger Games on film later.

ReplyDeleteExcellent. There'd be enough in each novel to make a mini-series of 4 episodes or so. As long as they remember that in this world, the center of the universe if Africa and they don't try to make it into the US or the UK to make it easier for the audience.
ReplyDeleteI think the Julia Spencer Fleming novels (In the bleak midwinter, I shall not want, etc) have enough UST, mystery, adventure, and local atmosphere to create a good summer series. Furthermore, a woman priest (Episcopalian) who's also a military pilot/chaplain offers a type of character we haven't got on TV yet.
ReplyDeleteI used to be a huge fan of the "Famous Five" series, by Enid Blyton, when I was a kid, and I'd love to see an updated TV show with each story in a 42-mn format. Recently I saw that they'd released the "old", original 1930s-1950s stories and updated versions of the novels (2010's!) so it'd be cool to have an updated tv show too, for our kids. I know a lot of 30-40 year olds who'd be delighted. :D

I always wanted to see the John Sandford "Prey" series about a Police Detective (and later a P.I.) who catches serial killers and violent criminals brought to film.... and I am getting my wish with Mark Harmon in the lead role of Lucas Davenport.
ReplyDeleteHe is not exactly who I pictured as Lucas, who is in his late 30s, tall, wide-shouldered, with piercing blue eyes and a "chilling" predatory stare, a scar along his hairline down to his mouth.
I pictures Julian McMahon, Gerard Butler, Wentworth Miller, or maybe even Paul Walker, but they went with lead of the number one show on TV. I can't really blame them too much. Despite him being far too old, he should play the role well... I hope!
Imagine it woul have to be on Premium cable with all the violence, but I'd tune in. I have thought it would translate well to film or TV since I read The Icewind Dale Trilogy.

Jack L. Chalker wrote one of the best series of books ever, it began with "Midnight at the Well of Souls" and continued with other well of souls books. The books are science fiction in nature with great action, adventure, interesting creatures and characters. It would be an expensive undertaking but I think well worth the price of a planet with 1.560 different sentient beings on it.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood, would be an awesome book series to come to T.V of course it would have to be on HBO but would attract a great number of followers for sure!!
