Question of the Day - What is your favorite theme song from any decade?

8 Mar 2011

Today's question comes from spartigus15 who asks

"What is your favorite theme song from any decade?"

This is a great question, and there just so many iconic theme tunes.

I was never a huge fan of Dallas but it's theme tune was very good and very memorable.

Other ones that really spring to mind are The A-Team, Hawaii Five-0, Cheers and the X-Files.

But to pick my favorite 3 I'd have to go with Hawaii Five-0 in 3rd place

2nd Place the original Mission Impossible TV Show

And first place going to The Twilight Zone. It's very short, but just so iconic.

So what about you? What great TV Theme songs do you love, which are your favourites and which is your all time number 1? Leave links to youtube videos where you can share your theme song.

And please keep submitting your Questions of the Day Below using the form.

  2. Top favorite: the theme song from PBS' Mystery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ge-Yr5vkYU. That whole montage, ending with the screaming lady. Love it.
In second place, The Sopranos, "Woke up this Morning," played by Alabama 3.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUT07eZoXPw
3rd place: Life and Death, Lost.

  4. i've had the angel theme in my head for the past three days, no lie.
and the buffy one is awesome of course, but i much prefer angels!

    ReplyDelete
  5. they're all so obvious i don't even feel i need to put them.
but there's the current shows, like fringe, castle, dexter and breaking bad.
and the older shows like, angel, buffy, firefly, star trek voyager, two guys & a girl!
oh, and big wolf on campus theme! haha.
but as i said, they're all way obvious. and picking one favourite would be very very hard.

  7. Since the question covers all decades, I'm going to say the theme from an old show, MacGyver : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaQvBbzslJE . each time I listen to it, it takes me back to my childhood. And besides, it's very catchy.

The Wire themes. Yes, there are five of them, one for each season, Way Down in the Hole is sung by different artists). I know it's not the opinion of many fans of The Wre out there but my favourite of the 5 seasons is maybe the season 4 theme : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QE1VEsXSmc . They all have their own identity and depth anyway, all outstanding.

And finally, I'm going to say Six Feet Under. I sure am not the biggest fan of the show (I think it's like Mad Men, a bit overrated) but the theme is wonderful : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYAe0qwg9Yw.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Has to be Buffy! X-files would probably come second.

    ReplyDelete
  9. As much as I love the X-Files theme (and it really is a classic), I have to go with Stargate SG-1's theme. It was such a huge part of my childhood and it's just always brings a smile to my face. It also makes for a kick-ass ringtone.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Good question! There's a lot of songs that I like, Farscape, Stargate, the new Hawaii 5-0, I also love Southland and Cold Case's song.

    Bored To Death http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPSb8yFGZ-E

Now that's stuck in my head : )

  16. There are so many great TV theme songs. I found the first ones that came to mind were westerns from my childhood. Paladin, Maverick, Bonanza. The most iconic has to be Rawhide.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sl2fONPgIJE
We all sang the Adams Family theme song.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVDJvrBFDDc
Who doesn't get happy hearing the Muppets Show theme song?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-_QLNkh-zI

Right now I love the theme songs from Justified and Showtime's version of Shameless.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I would have to go with ANY theme from LOST, especially "Life and Death" (I assume we're not just talking about title themes), The X-Files, Fringe, Twin Peaks, True Blood and Dexter. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. That's easy: MASH! Suicide is Painless is such a hauntingly beautiful song set against the semi-comedic plot to remind us of the horrors of war. Both the version with lyrics from the movie and the instrumental from the show (minus the weird samba version from season 8 or 9).

    Show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7xsh7DcFcc

    Movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlnB34ZDo9g&feature=related

Second would have to be the theme song to Earth Final Conflict. Pretty celtic-style rock!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efIVQgAF580

  19. Agreed! Am a big fan of cello rock/metal (Apocalyptica), so I've always loved that song.

  32. Wow I just thought of this series yesterday with the QOD about changing actors in a role or in a lead character! I totally forgot the theme however.... Thanks for reminding me how good it was!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Loved when The Blues Brothers sang Rawhide in the honky tonk bar in their movie!

    ReplyDelete
  34. For those that like the Carnivale theme song I suggest Jeff Beal's music! He did all the scoring and music on Carnivale, as well as the score on Monk, Rome Ugly Betty, In Plain Sight Theme, Jesse Stone TV movies and many more. Plus he has original CDs in addition.

  35. How could I have forgotten the theme from Cops?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYott1SeA5g
    Bad Boys by Inner Circle.

  39. Love Apocalyptica, Darling Violetta, Rasputina, etc and thank Joss Whedon, Buffy and Angel for exposing me to the genre!

Ever listened to "Jorane", Zoe Keating, or to a lesser degree Damien Rice? The first 2 are cellists and the music is all cello, less rock, but simply amazing. Damien is more acoustic coffee house rock... you have probably heard his song "The Bowler's Daughter" ,but a lot of his songs have more cello based music.

... not enough strings in rock. Okay, sure there is Symphonic Metal like Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation etc... Some are awesome, but that growling and cliche "dark metal" edge ruins so much of it for me. We need more Gothic orchestral rock bands! :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Loved the crotchety old guys in the balcony! and the Swedish Chef. :)

  41. I have a collection of TV Theme songs that I listen to everyday.
Gilligan's Island, The Love Boat, CHiPs, The Little House on the Prairie, Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Waltons, and The Brady Bunch are among my favourites.

    ReplyDelete
  42. lostrocks4ever8 March 2011 at 20:42

I love a great theme song I can sing along to
    my faces are
    Gilligans island
    Hawaii 5-0
Psych (and all the alternate versions)
    South park
    The simpsons
    Big bang theory
    NCIS

And all the theme songs which aren't theme songs at all like lost and supernatural, those dark, slow ominous tones and startlingly loud glass shattering (lost and supernatural respectively) are just the best little tunes to hum along to :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Damien's best-kown song probably is "9 Crimes" which was also used on a pretty good True Blood season 3 episode. And talking about Damien Rice almost always reminds me of Charlie Terrell. Ever since I heard his song "Redneck Gigolo" in the vastly underrated movie gem "Poolhall Junkies" I love this guy.

    ReplyDelete
  44. To be honest I don't really care much about themes. The only thing that came to my mind was the theme of the movie Boondock Saints which even got me to learn playing the tin whistle.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Arrested Development

    ReplyDelete
  46. I have read your blog.. the Bob Loblaw lawblog.... You, sir...are a mouthful!

    ReplyDelete
  47. "take my love, take my land, take me where I can not stand...."

    ReplyDelete
  48. Lol, which show do you mean? Earth Final Conflict Boone/Liam S1/S2, MASH Henry, Trapper, and Frank for Potter, BJ, and Charles? Or The movie version of MASH to the TV show lol?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Honestly, I mostly listen to classical music, but Nightwish and Apocalyptica are definitely awesome :). I've never heard of the others, so I'll check them out! Oh, and I do like Damien Rice, but don't know his stuff particularly well.

If you like pop with classical influences, check out Patrick Watson or Pierre Lapointe (piano), or, my personal favourite, The Swell Season (or The Frames, same lead singer).

    ReplyDelete
  50. Darling Violetta does the theme from Angel, Rasputina did a few Buffy songs (I think you were a fan of both shows). Both are that light Gothic alternate rock sound.

I will check out those artists. I like some classical but have always had a hard time finding musicians I like as much as the people suggesting them to me. I like Yo-yo ma and a few others whose names escape me (they aren't in my heavy rotation list). Any other cellist you can suggest?

A few years ago I got into some "classical" guitarists like Newton Faulkner, Rodrigo y Gabriella etc. Love that percussionist guitar sound.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I meant Earth: Final Conflict's theme.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh, then yes, I know Darling Violetta lol. My bad. And yeah, I am a huge Buffy/Angel fan! If you like The Frames, have you seen the movie Once? The Swell Season is essentially the group Glen Hansard (lead singer of the frames) formed with the girl from that movie. Either way, I would recommend that movie to everyone ever!

I guess when it comes to classical music, I'm not really a fan of particular artists. I just like specific composers. That aside, the best cello player I have heard would probably be Jacqueline du Pré. She has a really depressing/tragic life story involving dying of MS and her music is just so incredibly passionate.

    ReplyDelete
  53. "When I am through with you, there won't be anything left."
I think that sums it up for me. (Damages' theme song is just PERFECT)

Others include: Veronica Mars, Dexter, Carnivale, Fringe, Medium, X Files, Angel, Buffy, Charmed, and so many others...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Never saw Once... maybe I will add it to my Netflix queue.....Added Jaqueline du Pre to my "to listen to" list...

Recall the band at the Bronze playing in season 2 episode with the Judge? They played a song called Transylvanian Concubine... That is Rasputina.

    ReplyDelete
  55. You listen to them every day? That's impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Love Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins (The Chicago Code).

    ReplyDelete
  57. There are already so many great theme songs in the comments, it so hard to decide which one is the best.
I just have to throw in a little 80s flavor -> Riptide :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMq59GCaIfw ... and "21 Jump Street" and "McGyver"

  59. Oh, this will be fun :D

TWILIGHT ZONE - Def second this one...it's so DOO DOO DOO DOO and very original...you can recognise it anywhere.

DOCTOR WHO - Same as above

X- FILES - Another 'iconic' theme tune for a 'iconic' show......the longer version is even better.

BAYWATCH - Ok, don't all hit me at once...but gotta say, i love this theme tune that replaced the original one of season 1.....and it is so AWESOME to work out to..."i'll be ready....I'LL BE READY"

LITLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE - Oh' this one is so 'nostalgic' for me...My Mam used to have this on, on a sunday while she made the 'Roast'.....and i used to sit there as a kid watching this show, and i could smell the chicken/veg *sigh* .....really brings back memories :))

FRIENDS - "I'll be there for you".....this one was really fun.

St ELSEWHERE - this was another one i loved....don't ask me why!

COPS - Never watched the show but the "Bad Boys" song had me rockin out....i'm very embarassed now ;))

STARGATE - Love the theme tune of this, but the movie theme is even better...actually the whole score is impressive <3

HOUSE - Hate this show, but love 'Nara'

MASK - Another one i'm completely embarassed to admit i like..... but it's just so 'guilty pleasure' to listen to...I have it on my Ipod *hangs head in shame*

I'll be leaving now...enough embarassment for one day :))
