Psych - The best comedy you're (probably) not watching!

I'll start with a review that I think pretty much sums this show up - "The best under-the-radar comedy".

That's pretty much Psych in a nutshell.
Now, I'm from Israel. I don't know how popular the USA network is, by itself or compared to other channels. Maybe in comparison, a lot of people watch Psych. But that's not how I understand it. It airs on Wednesday nights. I think that's a good day. When most shows usually start out in week days and are then "sent to die" in the weekend when the ratings go down, Psych did the opposite. It started out on Fridays, and got bumped up to Wednesdays.
It's series premiere averaged 6.1 Millions viewers, and it was the highest rated scripted series premiere on basic cable in 2006. But I'm gonna stop with the ratings angle, 'cause again, I'm not expert about it, and this could mean nothing.

So here's a summary of of the show for those of you who never heard of it, or heard bits and pieces:
Shawn Spencer (James Roday) is a hyper-observant guy, with eidetic memory. After he's arrested when one of his anonymous tips is believed by the cops to be inside information, he convinces them he knew it because he's a psychic, and uses his gifts to "prove" it. They let him go, and he decides to open a Private Investigators agency along with his childhood friend, Burton "Gus" Guster (Dule' Hill), posing as a psychic.
Other characters are Shawn's father, Henry (Corbin Bernsen), a former cop who wanted Shawn to become a cop too. Shawn often comes to his father for advice about cases, and he can also be seen in flashbacks, when he tried to prepare little Shawn to become a cop.
Detective Carlton Lassiter (Timoth Omundson), the cop that arrests Shawn, is skeptic about his abilities. He works at the Santa Barbara police station, along with his partner, Juliet O'hara (Maggie Lawson), who Shawn is very fond of. There is also Karen Vick (Kirsten Nelson), the police Chief.
That's basically what you need to know. The show has only few continuing storylines, as most episodes are "case of the week" style. There's no problem jumping into the show, but of course it's better if you watch it from the beginning.

Now, I've watched a few episodes of many popular comedies, like Two and a Half Men, 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, etc. While some were funnier than others, I enjoy Psych more than all of them. And why was it so great? Here are a few reasons:
1) It perfectly combines a cop show with a comedy. Most cop shows take themselves seriously...Not this one. It's extremely fun to watch. Silly, but in the best way possible. It manages to show a good, interesting case and investigation, but does it in a way that makes you grin all the time.
2) The main leads- It's hard to believe that Roday and Hill aren't really childhood friends. Their chemistry is so natural, you'd think they know each other since kindergarden. Their communication, either verbal or physical, is the crown jewel of the show, and they make one of the best pairs on television.
3) The other main leads- Timothy Omundson is also fun to watch, playing the serious, sarcastic, sick-of-it-all Lassiter. Sometimes his attitude seems a little extreme, but he plays it out so well, it looks natural.
Maggie Lawson is also great. She can display a cute, charming Juliet at times, but when things get rough, she can also be one bad-ass chick. Her romantic tension with Roday is practically perfect (Maybe because they're a couple in real life too. And yes, they met on the set.)
4) Guest stars- Being an under-the-radar comedy, you might expect Psych to bring in mostly anonymous guest stars, with a familiar face once in a while. BUT the show is frequently visited by big names that could easily make an awesome movie cast. With guests like Judd Nelson, Cary Elwes, Peter Weller, Ally Sheedy and more, you know you're in good hands.
5) References- As kids growing up in the eighties, Shawn and Gus frequently makes 80's references concerning the case. But don't worry, fellow 90's people, there are more modern references too. And they're being fired in a crazy rate. Didn't get one? Then you'll get the next one, coming 2 minutes later.
These are just the main things out of many that makes this show a rare treat. It may seem childish, but people of all ages will find something to love. And as long as this article makes at least one person a new Psych fan, my job here is done.
5 Seasons of Psych have aired, with an upcoming 6th season (Premiere date is still unknown). Try catching some reruns, or better yet, buy the DVDs. The money is worth it, to the last cent.

  1. I love Psych, once you get into it and are on board with the characters it is laugh out loud funny. I love all teh eighties references, and the guys and the writers are great fun to follow on twitter too :D

  2. So true Shawn and Gus banter are great, and they're my favorite bromance of the 5 best I can think of (other 4: JD/Turk - Scrubs, Corey/Shawn - Boy Meets World, Troy/Abed - Community, House/Wilson - House)

  3. It's funny alright. But so far I can't get into it. I've liked what I've seen so far but I dunno I just can't explain it.

  4. Psych is so funny, I really like it, it doesn't get much publicity in the UK or errr any it seems, it's a shame....

  5. I like Psych. I always have. The one criticism I have as a longtime viewer is actually a blessing for potential new viewers, and that is this...

Nothing ever really changes on this show. Character progression is painfully slow on Psych to the point that watching an episode from season 1 is almost exactly the same as watching one from season 5. You, as a new viewer, can jump on board at any point and not really have to play catch-up.

This is a show about an overly-intelligent man-child and his childhood buddy screwing around and solving crimes. If you're looking for a fun piece of fluff that will make you laugh for an hour, this show is for you. Just don't expect anything deeper than that.

  6. I watched Psych in the beginning and loved it, but the 'psychic vibes' Shawn was having and his overselling of them got old to me. I tried last year to catch up p on episodes I missed. I enjoyed them, a lot, but it got old to me again. I love catching an episode now and again, but it is just so repetitive. I have issues with procedurals for the same predictability and repetition. I guess I love their formula, but it just never changes and I need some evolution from a series to be a regular viewer for years.

All that said.... the chemistry between Shawn and Gus is AMAZING! Both Roday and Hill have incredible comic timing. I love their inside jokes and pop culture references. The 80s references alone give me fits! The flashbacks at the start of each episode and then the ensuing story ties in are great stylistic plot devices. I always recommend Psych to friends because most people do not tire of the repetition as fast as I do.... Great series.

  7. I have been a fan for years and I absolutely love it. Shawn and Gus really do have amazing chemistry and its hard to believe James and Dule haven't been friends forever. Each episode's case/plotline is always so interesting. The show rarely has just a plain, generic murder or crime occur...the situation/theme is always something different (ex: murder in a old-west tourist trap, a murder attempt tied to an American Idol spoof, and so so so many others). I also love the dynamic b/w all the characters. Psych really is an ensemble comedy where every star gets a chance to shine

  8. Me too. I watched it regularly for a while, then slowed down. Now, if there's nothing else on, I'll watch it and enjoy it. I got a kick out of the Nestor Carbonell arc, Lostie that I am. But there's nothing that will keep me on edge and waiting for the next week. I already know what will happen the next week. About the same as last week. Still, it's fun

  9. This is another one of my favorite shows! I honestly couldn't see how this could get any better. It's epic. B) I'm completely happy with the fact that Shawn and Juliet are now a couple! :D Been waiting for that for awhile...

  10. i totally agree with everything said here!!
psych does not get enough appreciation anywhere!!
it is by far my fave comedy above how i met your mother, community, big bang theory and modern family (those are the ones i watch)
james roday and dule hill are amazing and unbelievabley hilrious
i love how half the dialogue of the show is improvised. it just makes it twice as funny
the running jokes are amazing and far funnier than any running jokes of any other show
i wish more people knew about psych

  11. Meh, I tried it but it's just not the right humour for everyone I guess. I thought the main character just came over as an annoying jerk, lol.

  12. I loved the show at the beginning. It was so funny and sweet at the same time. But these last few seasons, more and more eps are painful to watch because Shawn's behaving like an arrogant ass or downright dumb. It's embarrassing and I find myself ffwding through more and more episodes. It's a shame, really.

  13. it's just too much of a cop show for me. It can be very funny and the main stars are great, I think Lassiter and Julie are funnier than Gus and Shawn, but I miss an over-all story arc. If there is nothing else on TV or one of my friends who is a Psych fan is over, I will watch it and have a great time but I don't miss it if I forget to watch it.

  15. I've been meaning to check this show out on Netflix. Your description of it makes it sound very similar (at least in spirit) to the show Castle. Can anyone tell me how the two shows stack up against each other in their opinion?

  17. Never really thought about it, but you're right, they do both have similar premises. I think Psych is a comedy with dramatic bits, but Castle is more of a drama with comedic bits.
