Looks like the end of the line for No Ordinary Family, star Michael Chiklis has joined CBS' half-hour pilot Vince Uncensored. Disney has also removed the sets of No Ordinary Family from the Disney lot.
No surprise here, it was kind of a stupid show and the only reason I watched it every now and then was the great cast that was totally wasted on this show.
I tried to watch NOF, I wanted at least one superhero replacement series this year out of the new pilots. I just felt they took a superhero series concept and then watered it down with the worst aspects of family drama. . Still relatively well made and somewhat fun, but no darkness or grit, no real action, no real suspense etc.
Ugh, this sucks. Why not shove off the crap reality tv shows they have going on? Why is it that the good, family tv shows have to get canceled? Maybe if ABC even tried advertising more for it and changed the air time, it would have fared better. I wish ABC Family or another network would pick it up...
Also joins the "trying to reinvent the wheel" list too.
Superhero shows can work well and there is already a formula for it... When they try to add in elements of other genres or make themselves completely different of past hero shows? By trying to broaden the appeal they ruin the very elements that can make a hero series work and end up wit ha watered down product.
I don't mind that NOF tried something different. It's the poor execution that I object to. It's tough to get people to open up to the superhero genre and every failed, half-assed attempt makes it more difficult to greenlight the next project.
I get trying to make your show unique, but personally I prefer a well done "formulaic" series to a poorly executed unique show. Good writing can save even the most unoriginal shows around.
I hope all the new "hero" shows are better... I would like at least one but really 2 or more to stick around a while.
The darkness, action, and suspense was all definitely there; you just had to get a few episodes into it first. The beginning of the season was definitely way too watered-down with family-friendly elements, but once it got that out of its system, it turned into a really interesting super-powers show.
Apart from the most recent episode, I'd say it's worth struggling through those bad episodes in the beginning to get to the good stuff that comes later.
I watched the first 6 or 7 episodes I think... and it did get better, but not enough for me to stay into it. Better than The Cape was though..... so that's something.....
People might think it was a stupid show, but i really liked it. Its so intruiging and every episode pulled me in. Unlike other shows, where sometimes i had to stop in the middle because they are soo boring, i would watch throught the 40 minute episodes always wanting more!
What a shame. It is a good show. I'm not a fan of cheesy entertainment, but the show was a perfect family show about superheroes. It clicked with me. Oh well.

ReplyDeleteThe proverbial nail in the coffin here. Not a surprise, lackluster show and horrible ratings, didn't stand a chance.
ReplyDeleteIt was inevitable, but the show was starting to find itself. Those first few really bad episodes chased everybody away and they never came back.

ReplyDeleteAdd this show to the "good cast, bad writing" list along with The Cape.

ReplyDeleteI hope Powers on FX does a better job.

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the show....such a shame to see it go. But oh well, that's Disney and a lot of other production companies for you.
