HBO comedy pilot overview

Mar 26, 2011

HBO has greenlit Spring/Fall, a half-hour comedy pilot led by Tea Leoni. The series is set in the New York fashion world: Leoni plays “half of a dysfunctional partnership between two women with different approaches to career, family, and friendship.” Kate Robin (Six Feet Under) wrote the script and will produce with Leoni, Jimmy Miller (The Other Guys), and documentary filmmaker R.J. Cutler(The September Issue). Deadline imparts that the pilot will shoot this June.

HBO’s current half-hour comedies — Entourage, Hung, Eastbound & Down — tend to skew male, but the projects in the pipeline suggest intent to program a female-oriented comedy block in the near future:

- Enlightened: Laura Dern plays a woman who undergoes a spiritual awakening; created by Mike White (Year of the Dog)
- Veep: Julia Louis-Dreyfuss stars as the vice president; created by Armando Iannucci (In the Loop)
- Girls: Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture) is developing the series with Judd Apatow
- Stitch N’ Bitch: Ellen Page, Alia Shawkat wrote the hipster-mocking script with Sean Tillman; Page and Shawkat may star
- I’m With the Band: Zooey Deschanel plays a groupie in the late 1960s; based on the memoir by Pamela Des Barres, who reportedly conquered Mick Jagger, Keith Moon, and Jimmy Page among others

Whether HBO wants to harken back to the Sex and the City salad days or compete with Showtime’s femme-friendly comedy lineup, they now have plenty of ammunition. It will be interesting to see which of these make it to air. Tilda seemed like a lock given stars Diane Keaton and Ellen Page. But HBO passed on the series.

  1. Enlightened is pretty official, there are trailers on the Internet and HBO got the show a homepage on their website : http://www.hbo.com/enlightened/index.html

HBO still has new seasons of How To Make It in America and Curb your Enthusiasm to include in their schedule, besides Hung & Entourage (summer) + Bored to Death & Eastbound and Down (fall).

In 2012, there will be no more Entourage and Eastbound and Down, so there are two spots available, maybe for Enlightened + Veep/Grls/Stitch n' bitch/I'm With the Band. I hope Veep gets picked, the pitch is very good and so is Julia Louis-Dreyfuss.

  2. HBO has also greenlight a pilot with Ed Burns called "40". Ed Burns is an actor that have been in a bunch of movies, he has also guest starred a couple of times on Entourage. The series is also made by some of the same people behind Entourage/How To Make It In America.

How To Make It In America S2 will start in the summer, most likely somehow get aired same nights as Entourage.

  3. It's not a complete list of all their comedies and pilot. There will also be a pilot about a struggling stand-up comedian. It's a show by Galifianakis, but I don't know if he'll also star in it. Only know that his friend Brody Stevens will be starring in it.
Sounds a bit like Louie to me.

Enlightened should be pretty official, I agree on that. Also the cast looks really awesome, this should turn out to be interesting.
I love Zooey Deschanel, but not sure I like her project. Can't say alot about the other 3, but Veep and Stitch N' Bitch don't sound too bad.

  5. I guess this means that that FOX comedy starring Zoeey Deschanel isn't happening?
