Buffy Season 8 - Recap

7 Mar 2011

For those who are solely interested in Angel Season 6, I will eventually recap that too but we need to know Buffy's journey first. To even begin Whedon’s Season 8 Buffy recap we need to start at Whedon’s first canon comic book within the Buffyverse which is weirdly enough the ending, where Buffy and Angel’s fight will take them, and seemingly Buffy’s final resting place.
Fray is a comic series which began during Season 6 of Buffy and ended a few months after the final episode of Buffy aired. Fray is a Slayer in a distant dystopian future, we are told that she is the first to have been called in two hundred years and that the Slayer cycle is to begin anew. While it is important to ask why did the Slayer cycle end in the first place, it also puts into doubt the actions taken by Buffy in the final season and how great they were in the grand scheme of the Slayer mythology. Did Buffy’s “every one a slayer” spell have a detrimental effect on the Slayer lineage and in some way cause this dystopian future?
It’s safe to say if you loved the ending to Buffy in its television form, both the message of unity and Buffy’s final smile of peace, you should not continue to read either these recaps or Season 8 because in typical Whedon style we are heading somewhere bleak, full of bad decisions, death and eventually Fray’s future.
Right, have the optimists left? Because here’s the next bombshell; Fray is told of the final Slayer that was called, the mysterious Slayer fought an apocalyptic army of demons and when it was done, all magicks, and demons were banished from this earth. The final shot of this sequence shows that the Slayer was also taken through some portal with the other demons, on the assumption that this is Buffy, she is banished from earth and forced to live in another dimension with the demons. Not in the least bit similar to the final scene in Season 7 which portrayed an image of hope and happiness in store for Buffy. However it is important to note that this story of the final Slayer is told by an unreliable source and so this fate of Buffy is not set in stone, we’ve also seen other inevitable prophecies not come true the way we thought (Buffy’s death in Prophecy Girl being the prime example).
This is Whedon’s least conventionally linear story to date, we’ve seen flashbacks (Buffy, Angel) flash forwards (Dollhouse) and now we literally jump from Season 7 to the end, then to Season 8 then we move back and forward until we have all the information that will perhaps lead us to Fray’s dystopian future. You game?

  1. Season 8? only seven seasons.

  2. Season 8 was a little whacky for me... something Whedon admitted had probably been a mistake in retrospect. They went overboard with the "unlimited budget" and it became less and less what made Buffy great.

There were some really great moments in there though and an "epic" feel to it. I especially loved everything Faith/Giles. So I'm in!

Sorry, I guess I should have mentioned it was the comics. A few months ago I posted a poll to see if people would like to read a Buffy comic (official comic continuation written by Whedon) recap.

  4. It was also sometimes difficult to follow. I stopped reading due to school a while back (I think I'm only on 25 or 26) and have yet to pick it up again. I know that I will/I will enjoy it, but it was hard to follow characters in comic book format when they were hard to differentiate.

  5. I'd like to read the recaps, yes. Although I think the show had a perfect ending and I find that an 8th season in comic book form is disappointing, I'd like to know what happens. I just know that Dawn is a giant, and that the main characters don't necessarily appear in every comic book, contrary to what would happen with the episodes of the series.

  6. There are recaps for the Buffy/Angel continuation on the Buffy wikia site.

  7. Why do we need to know Buffy's first? Angel season 6 came first, and recapping Buffy might confuse some people since the Shanshu and Angel's return from Hell are in there.

  8. I read them all in two sittings.

It wasn't hard to follow for me... just a massive departure from the TV show, which I guess was to be expected, but I know it would have alienated a few fans.

I'm also not a fan of the entire plot (Twilight, etc) which I won't say here as you haven't read that yet. XD

Chronologically, Angel S6 is before Buffy S8, but publication of S8 came first. So to respect Whedon's original order of plot points I will be starting with S8 and then when the time suits I will fill in Angel Season 6. There is another reason that I have decided to do it like this but I cannot explain without ruining major plot points. I am trying to tell the full comic story in a way thats most beneficial for people who do not already know the plot.

  11. Im confused as to how it works. Whats the proper order your suppose to read them in? And where can you get them from? can you get them from Ibooks for the ipad or kindel? or do you have to get them from a proper comic book shop?

It has been so long since they first came out in comic form that are now in collected paperbacks. Use your region's Amazon and look for Angel: After the fall, and Buffy (season 8) volume 1 "The long way home". From there you should be able to work out which other ones you would need to buy. Chronologically it goes Angel: After the fall, then the rest of that 'Season', then Spike's mini series, then Buffy season 8, and I will be covering each one of these stories in my ongoing Recap. :) Hope that is some help.

Glad to have been some help, however I would have no idea about getting them on Ipad. I'd be surprised if you couldn't get them on Ipad though, plus i forgot to mention I would recommend buying Fray (The future slayer), it is written by Whedon himself and although is set 200 years after Buffy, it is meant to be read before Season 8.

  15. What?! haha lol.im so confused for some strange reason. Why is it suppose to be read BEFORE season 8 if technically its set after season 8. that doesnt make sense. well not to me anyway.

And ive sort of half looked for it on ipad and cant really find it. maybe its just me that cant find it on the ipad or perhaps im looking in the wrong place in the store altogether. but i might try and find it on the kindel and do it that way but its probably cheaper getting from amazon though...hmm....

If you have seen Dollhouse, Fray is kind of like the season 1 finale "Epitaph one" where you see well into the future, then you come back to 'present' time and see how events unfold to take you to that place. Or another way to look at it, in Buffy's season 1 there is the prophecy that she will die, and then you find out how that prophecy comes true.
Buffy season 8 has 7 volumes, and the final volume 8 comes out soon.
Angel has a few hard backs so they are more expensive, Angel after the fall, i think has about four or five books.
