So with this ominous title we kick off episode 14 of season 6. We are officially done with the first chapter of the story, the quest for Sam's soul, and onto the main villain part plus the fallout from the whole soul business. Please check out the Out of the Box television blog for more like this!
Previously, on

Last week we left off with the shocker of Sam convulsing on the floor, while internally burning in hell. We pick up right at that moment, with Dean desperately shaking him. We even get a "Sammy!" and it's super emotional (slightly lessened by the fact we knew he'd be up and about since seeing the promo). Luckily the fire dies out in his eyes in a very LOST-like shot (those guys really ruined that for anyone else), and he seems okay for now. Phew, false alarm.
Instead of immediate explanations for what happened and what he remembers, we cut to Great Falls Junior College, New Jersey, where a janitor is mopping up a science lab. Suddenly, the creepy skinless human model begins to move, and the janitor is invisibly cut on the forehead, the lights go out, and it's all VERY creepy. Doll episodes generally are. And the poor janitor is killed by the plastic monster. This reminding anyone else of that Paris Hilton episode last year...?
Back on Sam, who looks to have a bad sinus infection, but it's nothing some dodgy pills of Dean's won't cure, apparently.
Sam does remember what happened this time: about a week's worth of torment. He doesn't want to talk about it, but he claims to be "fine." He doesn't want to take it too seriously... Sam wants to fix the bad things he's done even if it means going back to hell, and wow, Sam's sense of goodness is stronger than I thought! I think he might be the most virtuous person this side of the disc eh?
"Have a heart"

Dean thinks the monster is awesome and takes its heart and makes some jokes, rejects a call from Lisa... the usual, in other words.
For some reason Sam and Dean are always the only ones who think to check the security tapes. But the tape is wiped clear of any signs of the monster, of course. Visiting the poor janitor's girlfriend is a big no-go as well - but hey, what's wrong with Glee and foot rubbing?!
It seems to be a general doll epidemic, however, because the next night in a warehouse, three towns over another poor nightshifter falls victim to the dolls and is cut on the forehead and then killed. This is ridiculous, I don't want to watch this anymore! But duty, people, DUTY AND HONOUR doesn't allow me to stop!
When Sam and Dean visit the warehouse they once again find EGF or EFG or whatever the hell it was (I haven't watched season 1 in a while)... and Sam finds the doll connection - though there's a distance greater than usual between the incidents. And even Dean thinks it's creepy!
The oldest trick in the book.

Missing, presumed... Rose Brown, whom Dean and Sam assume to be the vengeful spirit.
Lisa calls for the third time, and they figure it might be important. Turns out to be Ben, calling because "Something's wrong with mom" and he needs Dean's help. Dean is reluctant to leave [Sam], but Sam insists. Sam says something about having to figure out his past, and that's weird, since this has nothing to do with his past but whatever.
Sam visits Rose's sister, and finds out that the two victims were both working at the factory with Rose. An um, interesting investigation montage with um, interesting music (I have to admit, I was more impressed with the editing last week), and one of the guys, Johnny, gives Sam the guilty vibes.
Dean gets back home, to find Lisa... perfectly fine. They were Parent Trapped! I'm going to laugh at the fact that Dean even knows that movie.
Turns out Lisa is going on a date with Matt, a doctor, and Dean is annoyed. "I didn't ask you for anything." "Then ask me something!" great, angsty dialogue. As randomly and backhanded as I still think this pairing was forced upon us, I really like it, and I really like the angle it brings to Dean's character.
Hurry Sam, before all the evidence is dead!

Dean can't answer her what he wants from them, and a convenient camera cut later and we're back at Johnny... who clearly has something to hide.
But while he was cut on the forehead, Sam saves him before the dolls can kill him. He was "the most suspicious interview of all time", lol.
Johnny reveals how it all fits together: the boys made poor Rose think she had a secret admirer, made her go to an address... only to be met with a set-up, a doll... and then she fell and died, with a cut on her forehead.
I am really struck at this point by how straightforward the mystery is this week. I mean, not all episodes can be amazing and they do have the Ben thing to worry about too... but rather than seeking answers for Sam's relapse or anything like that, they are solving a really easy mystery, which doesn't even have the brilliancy of a season 1 last-minute twist, or the emotional investment of actual innocent people being at risk. Obviously Sam and Dean save lives regardless of who they're saving cause they're heroes like that, but we've got two murderers too cowardly to even make sure the poor sister (whom they work with and have to see every day) gets some resolution... well, it's hard to care too much.
Anyway, they predictably dumped the body, and Johnny predictably wishes he could take it all back.
Sam is disappointed, but will none the less help. "In the woods, in a clearing off something-something Road" is enough direction he needs, cause he's got super skillz, so Sam leaves Johnny to stay inside the salt line to look for the bones... yeah, this always ends well. Johnny is annoyed.
The kids are alright... naaat.

Ben and Dean have a moment. Ben wants Dean to come home, but he can't AND won't, and poor Ben blames himself. Dean plays the "when you're older" card but Ben's not getting it. Dean explains, "Just cause you love someone, doesn't mean you should stick around and screw up their life." He doesn't believe he is that person, who can be a part of the family. Ben, naturally, isn't seeing how bad Dean's life is - as any preteen boy or girl wouldn't.
"You say family's so important, but what do you call people who care for you, who love you even when you're a dick? You know you're walking out on your family, right?"
Ouch, Dean, way to get a John Winchester-like wake-up call.
Sam torches the bones... shall we bet there's a piece of her hair flying around in the atmosphere somewhere preventing her from being truly gone?
Haha, there's another dodgy montage, of Lisa and Ben this time... and the music is so RANDOM seriously. These guys need to get pointers from the mvidders over on YouTube, for reals.
Johnny heads to the pub - where he tells Jenny that he's leaving - a DOLL. Wtf? Does he know it's a doll?! Is he crazy? Why is he talking to it? I don't get it.
And oh crap, the doll comes to lifeeeee........... it smiles creepily, and Johnny is killed. Did anyone else find this super convenient and generally just too random to be credible? I get the message, the guy is lonely and has long and greasy hair, but aside from just generally seeming bored and unimpressed with Sam's scare tactics he didn't seem like the type to talk to a sex doll and pretend she is real, and talk about starting a new life with her...
I think again, I'm all for the creepy dolls moving jaggedly but I think this episode would have improved vastly if they'd used a similar camera/cutting technique as last week, where a similarly mundane MotW was made insanely scary and suspenseful by all the erratic cutting between shots and extreme close-ups. Just imagine how much more scary this episode could have been, had they utilised that method! This episode almost can't decide if it wanted to be scary or funny, and thus it kind of ends of flailing in the middle like a Magikarp which could have been a Gyarados.
The Girl With the Haunted Kidney... yeah, no, go with Dragon Tattoo

Sam looks through Rose's things and doesn't find any wayward hair (I still think that's a terribly flawed system, but we'll tackle that some other time), so he makes a new connection: it's all about the sister. Turns out she carries around something of Rose's: a kidney. Um, what now? I think this is a super interesting turn of events, something which again just emphasises how unreliable the "kill ghosts by burning all that's left of them" technique is - besides from organ harvesting in general, what about like, some distant grandchild inheriting a baby tooth, tossing it in the trash and it being buried somewhere under 10,000 tonnes of garbage? What then?!
Sam suggests hoodoo to exorcise the spirit, but as Isabel gets out of the car, Rose possesses the Impala!!!!! Whuuut! Dean is enraged, understandably! "She possesses sex dolls, this is not a sex doll!"
The Impala chases Dean, and it is possibly the funniest scene of Supernatural in a long time! As sorry as he is to do it, Dean tricks the Impala into driving into a window. Which I'm sure hurt him a lot more than it hurt her!
And here's the very convenient resolution to a very predictable mystery, because oh no - Isabel suddenly starts bleeding from the mouth as Rose appears, and Rose takes her kidney back and goes up in flames, killing Isabel. Wow, poor girl, that was so uncalled for! And very, very convenient. I wonder what made Rose do it, because as far as I could tell there was still one guy left unpunished, and why would spirit Rose want to destroy herself AND her sister? That... made no sense to me.
But sad ending huh? Morale of the story: can't always save the innocent!
Luckily the Impala can be fixed up though.
What, no more Braeden Bunch?
Now Dean and Sam have another life on their conscience (although I don't get this part either, because they didn't get her killed; Rose randomly decided to combust herself. But anyway), and Dean is depressed and disillusioned about what they do - what Ben said really got to him. But see, while before I got distracted by the weird-ass montage, I really need to make a point here that I don't think this was the end of Lisa and Ben. I think Ben's line about Dean abandoning his family is going to come back to, so to speak, haunt him, and at some point towards the end of the show we'll see him make the decision to not be like his father, to disobey tradition and actually settle down. Whether or not Lisa will have him is her deal (luckily she doesn't have a lot of personality so she can be molded any which way - though I have to say, I think the actress works extremely well with what she gets), but this didn't necessarily scream closure to me, it was more like, "Yeah so bye for now, but see you in a half season's time". Which kind of generally fits with the tone of the episode, no?
But of course, by leaving Lisa and Ben and going back to Sam, Dean has also made a choice, a choice which I'm sure reassured a lot of SPN fans. Sam is truly back, and is Dean's rock once again: "it's not all bad... at least Satan's left the building," Sam consoles. Sam thanks Dean, for what he's done, and tells him to keep fighting... and it's all very bittersweet.
But whatever happens, Sam's got your back Dean!
Quotables:
Dean (holding out a plastic heart replica): "Be my valentine?"
Sam: "...Rubbed her feet during Glee..."
Dean: "She possesses sex dolls, this is not a sex doll!"
Ben: "You say family's so important, but what do you call people who care for you, who love you even when you're a dick? You know you're walking out on your family, right?"
Rating: 2/5
So that was Supernatural this week - I'm sorry, but a ho-hum episode if I ever saw one! Now, I feel I should explain my ratings system this time: basically, 1 star is the lowest BUT it is still pretty damn good television, as all Supernatural is! 1 is pretty much on the level of Bugs, Red Sky at Morning (though I did like Bela), Criss Angel is a Douche Bag or All Dogs Go to Heaven, while 5 is like, Ghostfacers, All Hell Breaks Loose, What Is and What Should Never Be, Mystery Spot, The Monster at the End of This Book... basically this is a very, VERY personal, subjective list - one which will most likely give next week's episode a 10! I like a special, but not a gimmick. This episode gets a 2 because hey, it wasn't terrible, and the dolls WERE creepy, but other than that it didn't have a whole lot going for it. The real issue, Sam's hell relapse, was totally glossed over, Dean returning to Ben and Lisa was great in theory but reeked of missed potential, and the central mystery was formulaic and unengaging. Only thing that might have bumped it up would have been the amazing Impala chase scene, but even that wasn't enough to detract from the appalling montages. Stylistically it just blanched in comparison to last week, and that hurts it.
Now NEXT week....... as I wrote my undergraduate dissertation on postmodernism in television (and specifically Supernatural), I am already predispositioned to LOVE IT - it is the future of television you guys, I am telling you! But more on that next week - I might even use references for that one. ;)
Please note though that next week's review will be delayed, and appear some time during the week, because I have to go to London next weekend and won't be able to watch the episode till I come back. But have a great week, and see you next time yayyy!

Wonderful review :)
ReplyDeleteGreat recap Selina.
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty that 2/5 may have been too kind. The more I think about this episode the worse I realise it actually was. It was poorly written and even more so when you realise the potential it it had. I agree they did gloss over the whole Sam's hell memory thing and they did it in favour of a very poor MOTW story. But I think the reason they may have done that was so that it didn't cause an uproar when Dean left Sam to go check on the Lisa/Ben situation. And while I don't like the Lisa/Ben arc at all, I definitely felt that it needed closure. For the most part it did. I don't think we'll be seeing the Braeden's again (any time soon any way), I think Dean walking out and going back to Sam was a clear indication to Dean as well as Lisa and Ben that Dean chose Sam (and hunting) over Lisa/Ben (and his slice of apple pie).
Ben's whole speech to Dean about 'walking out on your family' was very well done when you realise that like us, Dean applies it to Sam and not the Braeden's. He'll feel guilty for a while and maybe a little upset over the end of that particular chapter of his life but he'll get over it. What he would never get over would be leaving Sam/walking out on Sam. Sam's words of support at the end of the episode really drilled it home to me, it wasn't about Dean loosing Lisa/Ben it was about him choosing Sam. In that sense the episode kind of reminded me of 'ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN' when Dean compared himself to Lucky and his situation-loosing the only people who have ever cared about you-at the time he was referring to Lisa/Ben and not Sam because Sam at the time was RoboSam and didn't have the capacity to care about him. Sammy though (as we saw at the end of the episode especially) is not RoboSam and does have the capacity to car and he does. So anyway it seems as though the Braeden arc is over, that terrible montage of flashbacks had an air of finality for me.
I'm going to pretend this weeks episode never happened, especially given how brilliant last weeks was (and even the week before). I'll give the show a free pass because as usual Jensen and Jared were awesome, because there were two really nice brotherly moments (beginning and end) and because I've seen the preview of next weeks episode.
I loved your review.First things first,it was not as critical as the one I read on buddytv.com...like,the reviewer there gave me the impression that he was a hater...Anyway,I would give the episode a 3 to 3,5/5.I didn't like it that much, but it was kinda different...I mean, mannequins DO work...at least for me.And I believe that this was the best time of the season to put an end to the whole Lisa & Dean story, because from now on,the brothers need to focus on saving the world, not their love lives.
ReplyDeleteCAN'T wait for next week's episode,I'M SUPER excited!!! :D
i liked the episode a lot more, think as with all it depends what kind you like (ghost hunt, sth apocalyptic or else). i didn t think it was for closure though, maybe delay it for this season, if anything i thought it felt zipped up inychtt, but this opened up the possibility again, which is good, it adds sth new i odn t understand why everyone wants this storylien to be swept under the carpets so badly, but ithink thats why everyone reads that into it,cause everyone expected that to happen. if they cut away after her speech then that woudl have been teh impression, but after his one-seems like confirmation it s family either way. it would be like permanently writing mary/john, jess out , even if they would die they are a big part of teh story now .no character is liked by everyone anyways.don t hink it will be revisited this season, maybe sometime next who knows.i thinkit was left open , mcuh more so then ychtt
ReplyDeleteIt's EMF, ElectroMagnetic Field.
ReplyDeleteanyone who watches Two and a Half Men should see some connection. The ghost of ROSE kills people via MANNEQUINS. in TAAHM's latest episodes Rose has these creepy mannequins as well :D
ReplyDeleteI gave the episode a fair rating of 3/5. It was a slow episode but it had it's moments.
ReplyDeleteAnd it is safe to assume that you were a LOST fan once?
Great recap, Selina. I enjoyed the episode and I would give it a 3.5/5. What really saved the episode for me was the end conversation with the call back to Live Free or Twihard - "I've got you're back" - but this time Sam meant it and Dean knew it. Made me want to go awwwwww.
ReplyDeleteThe mannequins were disturbing, especially the first one. Some good lines in this one but overall an average episode with an average feel for me.
I loved this ep even though it had its flaws. For me the negatives were:
ReplyDelete- The lack of budget for SPN has really showed in the last few eps. Dragons are people with hot hands, huge spiders are people with messed up faces, and possessed mannequins that you never actually see move. Personally this doesn't bother me that much, but it has been more obvious recently than I have been aware of before.
- Very little background music and, on the version I watched, an excess of background traffic noise in certain scenes.
- The stuff with Lisa and Ben was a bit inconsistent with how their break up was portrayed in previous eps eg Twihard. It seemed Lisa now wants Dean to be a stay at home, construction working dad - where previously she had accepted that he was a hunter who would come home between jobs. Dean's reasons for not staying - that it would encourage Ben to be a hunter, and that he wasn't good for them - made more sense than Lisa's reasons for not wanting him. Dean has clearly chosen Sam over Lisa and Ben. This is sad but inevitable.
But these were outweighed by the positives;
- I loved the brotherly interractions between Dean and Sam. I loved that they started the ep exactly where the last one left off, and we saw poor Dean's desperation at facing losing Sam again. Sam was great in this ep in the role of supportive brother - something we don't always get the opportunity to see. And the scene at the end, 'I have your back', was wonderful
- The twist with the haunted kidney was great
- The actress who played the sister was excellent; very sympathetic
- The possessed Impala, and Dean's reaction was great.
Overall a decent stand alone ep. Not a classic, but highly enjoyable. On your scale I'd give it a 3.5/5.
Nice review. Though I really liked the episode. It's weird cause I agree with your little comments aahhaah.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing is the dean running away from the impala scene. I REALLY didnt like that. You know season 1 pilot when they did it? well remember jensen's face = being scared cause his car is running im over. Then remember in yellow fever when he is running away from the very scary dog ;) = acting like a crazy personne, but that work because Dean was crazy. Well (yeah I do have a point hahaa) this scene made me think of the yellow fever one when it should have been the one in the pilot IMO any way. it anoys me a little this season. (the stone scene, this scene. And others I just dont remember now...)
good note: NEXT WEEK WILL BE AWESOME (and if it sucks I'll be crying hahaha)
? on the version you watched?
ReplyDeleteOverall, I gave it a 3.5/5. I don't know what it is anymore, but I'm just not enjoying it as I used to like the previous seasons (seasons 1 and 2 being the best ones–IMO). Maybe it's the lack of best-of-mullet-rock? Or, maybe it's the lack of "real" brotherly angst, and not the soulless Sam bullshit. I don't know. I keep waiting for it return to it's previous ways of dealing with brotherly turmoil (something we were supposedly promised before the beginning of this season).
ReplyDeleteLast episode was done so frakking well (something I hadn't seen in season 6 thus far), that it led to so much potential this one could have possibly had, but alas, I didn't see that potential being fulfilled (the wall of Sam being scratched and whatnot). Maybe it'll show up again. I don't know.
I actually liked the whole mannequin-thing. Besides the (horrible) graphics, it actually worked pretty well. They still managed to retain some of the humor we normally see from Sam and Dean (with Dean having the more snarky comments :P), which, I think, worked to this episode's advantage (in easing in to a normalcy for their relationship).
I hated, HATED the montage (and the crappy, not-so-mullety music that went along with it). As Dean would say, "no chick-flick moments"; this one being the WORST one. I don't understand. Did they fire their previous writers? Did they forget the essence of Sam-ness and Dean-ness? It was just all so weird. Augh.
I actually enjoyed the ending. It was nice to see something cannon about these characters we've come to love (and sometimes hate). It was almost like a slap into reality–you win some and you lose some. And what better person to say it than Dean's little brother, Sammy? It could have been more refined, but still cannon enough.
Overall, it felt like a not-so-good fic, which had some humorous moments and some angst. Like you know it would have read better if the author had put in that extra minute.
Great review, I agree.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, I would have made All Dogs a 2 and this one a 1.
Um, BuddyTV/ John Kubicek is in no way a hater...He's a critic, and there has to be one episode that's the worst of the season.
ReplyDeleteAugh. I don't even wanna talk about Bugs. The more I read your review, the more I hate this episode. Why, oh why, did they waste this episode? I really don't understand what the writers are thinking this season. Did they all trip on asphalt and break their HEADS. I'm just praying to the gods (I'm a bit of a BSG fan lol) that this show gets better, for Supernatural's sake!
ReplyDeleteI'd give a 3 or 3.5
ReplyDeleteI agree about the editing - especially after last week.
My impression was that Dean didn't really get a choice in whether or not he would go back to Lisa and Ben. Despite Ben calling Dean out on walking out on his 'family' (Yay Ben! for that) Lisa told Dean she was trying to get over him. To me that signalled she really didn't want him back.
I don't think we'll be seeing much of either Lisa or Ben again, although Ben and Dean have an obvious attachment, so who knows? Ben was right about the family thing, and Bobby is a classic example of non-blood Winchester 'family'. I never saw a future for Lisa and Dean anyway, but regardless of whether you're a 'fan' of Lisa or not, I think the writers had to deal with the situation sooner or later, rather than just leave it hanging. It wasn't complete closure, but probably the nearest we'll get at this point. The writers have much more important stuff to deal with in this half of the season.
I'm really enjoying the brother interaction.....Sam's soul is back so Dean has relaxed back into his more usual persona.
Sam's had a lesson in not scratching the wall. Do I think it'll stick? Not a chance. I think there'll be plenty more opportunities to witness a Sam 'hell relapse' that won't be 'glossed over'.
This is not an episode I'll be re watching over and over, but we should be used to filler eps on SPN so that's fine by me.
I actually completely liked the episode and I'd give whole 5 points to it. And some of the episodes you claimed as "1/5" are my favorite so I guess we have different opinions, I guess. I liked it because it completely reminded me of past episodes, there wasn't an actual constant action but it was just nice seeing them be brothers again. All the family moments were just lovely.
ReplyDeleteGuess I'm really spreading the hate now. Next week's episode looks a lot better. They've been promoting it a lot more too, so that's an encouraging sign.
ReplyDeleteRandom, but have you guys seen the new footage from the French Mistake from Misha's 10 on top spot?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIf63-eFT0E
WHEN'S FRIDAY ALREADY? I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE after Mannequin 3.
amazing video!!!
ReplyDeletejust made me a million times more excited!!!!!
sooo pumped
i love misha!!
great review but i'd prob give it a 3.5/5
ReplyDeletei did enjoy most of it
so pumped for next week though that i was kinda on a euphoric high while watching this one just in anticipation of next week
Er...suffice to say that I am in the UK and am unable to watch the show through the 'usual means'. So the quality of the version I see is not always top notch.I am not sure whether the sound quality problems I experienced were on the original version. It was most noticeable in the scene between Dean and Sam at the coffee stand near the beginning.
ReplyDeleteAre we ever going to hear about the Mother of All Evil again? We will learn anything more about the Soul mystery- the assignment Death gave Dean? Will we ever hear about the angelic Civil War again? Or the missing Heavenly Nukes?
ReplyDeleteI feel the writers keep bringing up these new mysteries/plots and never go anywhere with them. I feel its a very disjointed season.
I also feel the brothers haven't really killed anything major this season. They kill some dogs, but we learned there are killer dogs in a bunch of homes across America just waiting for some kind of single. Now there are killer spiders out there reproducing....Baby shapeshifters just waiting to grow up to cause havoc....have I forgotten anything else?
If just starting to feel that for every monster they kill there are a hunderd more out there.
So many of you complain about it and I actually liked the Lisa and Ben montage. Maybe it wasn't pure Supernatural style, but it was touching. Actually, the Dean/Lisa/Ben storyline made this episode watchable and not crappy. And the music wasn't all that bad either, it was way worse during other parts of the episode.
ReplyDelete
