Simon Mirren to leave Criminal Minds at the end of Season 6

20 Feb 2011

Criminal Minds executive producer/ showrunner Simon Mirren leaving the veteran crime drama. Mirren, who joined the series right after the pilot as a supervising producer, was promoted to executive producer at the beginning of Season 5.

This past October, Mirren, along with fellow Criminal Minds veteran, exec producer Erica Messer, took over showrunner duties alongside longtime exec producer/showrunner Ed Bernero when Chris Mundy left as showrunner of the Criminal Minds spinoff and Bernero shifted his attention to the new series. There is talk that Bernero may also leave Criminal Minds at the end of the season. He has a drama pilot, Partners, in contention at ABC but even if his pilot goes to series, he is expected to still have some involvement with the Criminal Minds franchise.

  1. I don't know who this is, but I hope Ed doesn't leave!

    And please fail, spin-off!

  3. First CBS throws out its two strong female characters and brings in an annoying Mary Sue newbie, now all the behind-the-scenes pillars are leaving. NOT a good sign.

  4. this show has a lot of BTS problems... they need to get their act together! it's way too good of a show to be imploding like this!

  5. Does anyone know if this show has been renewed for season 7? At this point it may be to late for this show even if they have a season 7 I don't see a season 8 as any possibility.

  6. It must be doing good if they did a spin off of the show. Once Prentiss leaves I think it'll go downhill though. If Reid or Morgan leave I'm done with the show.

  7. Producers and showrunners leave series... even established series quite a bit to start new projects, concentrate on family or something else in their life, conflicts behind the scene over money or talent. Sometimes it is a sign of things to come and others times it is just business as usual in television land.

Unless I hear more details this doesn't make me react much at all. IF the show takes a direction I don't care for or the level of quality goes down.... then I will start to take notice. so far this season (and all of its "behind the scene problems" people talk about) has been one of the better seasons in the shows recent years. Its overall cumulative ratings for the year are actually up from last year too...from 13.70 million to 13.85 million to date.

Could this have something to do with their decision to write-out JJ and Prentiss? If it does, then I say good riddance.

  9. Hi Beth.

No, it's not been officially renewed but it's pretty much a certain to be
    renewed.
