CW 0.8/ 1

----------

NBC: +36, Fox: +18, CW: no change, ABC: - 2, CBS: -33

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Live to Dance (CBS), Minute to Win It – 8 p.m. (NBC), Cougar Town (ABC), Off the Map (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox stood well above the Wednesday competition thanks to still killer American Idol. But not even the support of Idol could push relocated 9 p.m. occupant Human Target past a repeat of CBS’ competing Criminal Minds in the overnights. A one-hour edition of American Idol opened the evening for Fox with a hefty 15.8 rating/24 share at 8 p.m., which beat the four competing networks combined by 28 percent. That led into Human Target, which dipped to second overall in the 9 p.m. hour with a 5.9/10. Comparably, retention for Human Target out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of American Idol (16.4/24) was only 36 percent.

Although Human Target could be poised for time period victory among adults 18-49, a repeat of aforementioned Criminal Minds won the 9 p.m. hour with a 6.6/10.

Earlier in the evening on CBS, Paula Abdul on Live to Dance cannot compete with her old show, with a distant third-place 3.8/ 6 at 8 p.m. At 10 p.m. on the Eye net, week three of the four-week Blue Bloods Wednesday 10 p.m. test won the time period with a 7.5/12. Comparably, Blue Bloods built from the 9:30 p.m. portion of the Criminal Minds encore (6.7/10) by 12 percent. As a reminder, upcoming Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior moves into the Wednesday 10 p.m. hour (out of its parent series) on Feb. 16. Blue Bloods returns to Friday at 10 p.m. on Feb. 11.

Over at NBC, Minute to Win It stumbled opposite American Idol at 8 p.m., with a fourth-place 3.3/ 5 in the overnights. But a 9 p.m. installment of the game show (minus the Idol competition) perked up to a still fourth-place 5.3/ 8 at 9 p.m. That led into veteran Law & Order: SVU at a second-place 6.1/10 at 10 p.m. Although SVU will likely beat CBS’ Blue Bloods among adults 18-49, it trailed the Tom Selleck crime solver by 15 percent in the overnights.

ABC populated the 8-9:30 p.m. block with repeats of two episodes of underrated The Middle (8 p.m. - #2, 4.6/ 7; 8:30 p.m. - #2, 4.3/ 6) and Modern Family (#3: 6.1/ 9), which deserves positive mention for building by 42 percent from the 8:30 p.m. encore edition of The Middle. But an original installment of hiatus-bound (but already renewed) Cougar Town dipped to fourth, with a 4.7/ 7 in the overnights at 9:30 p.m. And recently introduced Shonda Rhimes drama Off the Map remains a bust, with a last-place 3.8/ 6 at 10 p.m. The last thing ABC needed was another edition of soapy Grey’s Anatomy set in the jungle.

As a reminder, upcoming ABC Matthew Perry sitcom Mr. Sunshine steps into the Wednesday 9:30 p.m. time period (out of Modern Family) next Wednesday. Let’s just hope that subsequent episodes are better than the lackluster pilot.

Last, and very least, were repeats of Smallville (#5: 0.9/ 1) and compatible Supernatural (#5: 0.8/ 1) on The CW, which air in originals tomorrow evening.

  1. Hey, it looks like Supernatural and Smallville beat the ratings that TVD and N got in our timeslots! Congratulations!

  2. Are these total viewer numbers or 18-49 numbers?

  3. Holy crap! Human Target did well. And its still considered likely to be cancelled.

  4. I hate Idol, but if it gives that much of a boost to Human Target.... we can at least be fair weather friends. Wow!

  5. For comparison - numbers from TV by the Numbers

Nikita / VD last Wed = Nikta had 1.4 total and 0.4 in 18-49 / VD had 0.8 total and 0.4 in 18-49
VD / Nikita last Fri = VD with 1.3 total and 0.6 in 18-49 / Nikita had 1.0 total and 0.4 in 18-49

If SV stays at 1.3 total and 0.5 in 18-49 and SPN stays at 1.0 total and 0.4 in 18-49, it's a virtual draw but Wed. is a stronger night than Friday. We need to get the word out about Friday's episodes. Get Twitter and Facebook buzzing folks. We need stronger number tomorrow. By the way, these are the numbers to beat:

New episodes last Thurs = VD had 3.3 total and 1.6 in 18-49 / Nikita had 2.6 total and 1.1 in 18-49

  6. I agree. If that will help keep Human Target on the air, I'm all for the Idol lead-in.

  7. Wow, that was great for Human target, I hope it comes back for a third season because I love it.

  8. I'm not sure a season 3 is in FOX's mind by the way they treated Human Target. In a season of 13 episodes they had 2 episodes a night on twice, and 2 special night episodes. I hope they get a back 9 this year later... or at least a short order next year for season 3!!

  10. Were those adjusted down or from a different site? The table on this site has TVD at 3.7 (1.6) and Nikita at 2.7 (1.1). Seems like each site has slightly different ratings and then they adjust them in 3 days or 7 days... so confusing and annoying to keep track of....

    FOR COMPARISON SAKE-LAST WEDNESDAYS FINALS

Doesn't really seem to matter which repeats CW air on Wednesday's against Idol. It'll be interesting to see how ANTM and SFTW do with all new episodes.

  14. I know. The way FOX has handled Human Target's schedule does make me worry about cancellation. I looked for nuggets of hope in the coverage of the TCA press tour in January, but not a kernel could I find. Only news of Fringe or Lie to Me. However, since Human Target did score a bigger audience (though just marginally) than Lie to Me on Monday, mayhap FOX will take a second look and take a chance on Human Target for a back nine or season 3 instead of Lie to Me?

  15. American Idol is still doing good with their ratings, not that I don't expect. All in all I'm happy to see that my favorite shows are still doing good.

  16. SPN is tied with nikita but Smallville is .5 and vd were .6

STILL its pretty close for not on our night :D

  17. well AI is just before it kinda helps :DD

    ReplyDelete
  18. I love Human Target so I'm glad it did well even though PIFeedback called it a "loser" - most shows would lose viewers and demo out of AI. I watched HT online today - great episode - because I was watching and recording Supernatural last night.

Now, this is not a bust on AI or Fringe, but AI is the most watched show on regular network TV at the moment and even on "bad nights" it pulls at least "20 million" Nielson viewers, who watched at least one "Fringe" commercial "last night and likely at least one on Tuesday. By comparison a little over 1 million "Nielson viewers" watched SMV and SPN last night - these reruns had very little or tv promotion - and by and had only fan support to get the word out. I watched SMV last night and there was only one SPN promo and that was for the SPN episode that followed; SPN did have two promos for the upcoming episodes but they were the same promos that have been airing. Both shows ran banners advertising the new episodes this Friday.

The CW network's promotion $$$ (as concerns Supernatural) against Fox's (advertising Fringe) is a joke ... it's like miniDavey vs Goliath - it's a joke - yet Fringe (and again I am not knocking the show) will reap the possibly large benefits - and bragging rights - of the adverts. I know SPN is an "aging show" but the CW never promoted it much when it was in it's second and third year. I feel like a child having a tantrum but it's so "unfair". The CW depends on Supernatural fans to promote the show because it's not one of it's pampered pets and it has never been.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree with most of what you're saying.. other than the unfair part. It's frustrating that The CW only hypes a few shows and even those promotions are not seen by nearly as many people as its "competition" Fringe". I just don't think that its one show vs the other in reality as much as it is in the fans minds.

I don't think The CW depends on fan promotion as much as they don't care if the show lasts or not. It just does not have much upside potential in their eyes. Even if it got promoted like Fringe gets promoted by FOX, I don't think SPN would get 5 million plus viewers. I like the show and want it to last, bu the US ratings keep going down.. meaning even the people who already know about it have stopped watching. It is very, VERY rare for a series to rise in numbers any large amount after its fifth or sixth season. NCIS is one example of it happening , but it is uncommon to say the least. Fringe will get similar treatment by FOX if it continues to drop... in fact it will get cancelled since FOX has higher expectations for its shows. So that "unfair" part you mentioned is a double edged sword. Sure Fringe gets more promotion, but its network expects far more from it. Trust me.. Supernatural is in a better spot. Fan promotion can has kept SPN around this far and may for another season or two. Even if Fringe fans galvanized and worked as hard as Supernatural fans, it likely would not save Fringe if the ratings drop much more.

All we can do is watch the shows we like, suggest them to others and hope enough people watch them that the network keeps them going.

  20. It may come down to how well next season's pilots are coming together for FOX. If they think they have strong pilots to replace Lie to Me and Fringe... the shows might be doomed. I think both could be solid with numbers about where they are now (maybe a little lower), but if FOX wants more..... UGh! I lost interest last year in Lie to Me, but I have hope both shows have earned a "back nine" or at least another 13 episode season and then a back 9 next year if FOX's pilot's burn out....

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh I agree with you - it's just a juvenile rant at "the unfairness of the universe" ;) .

It still bugs me that Supernatural has lost much of the positive momentum that it had going until both SMV & SPN were preempted with little notice.

Comcast (my media provider), EW.com, and tvguide.com only have SPN as one of their TV listings, all three are promoting a new Fringe ep tonight(TVGuide.com has a nice write up on Smallville though as well as having it on their "Watch List. TV.com has the "encouraging"article "Will Fringe and Supernatural kill each other"; however as fans of both shows know and Fringe- only fans have realized from the Fox move to Fridays that Fringe has now become the beneficiary of not one but two weeks unopposed by their significantly weaker competition. in total viewers as well as in demo.

We'll see tonight how both shows fare. I do hope that tonight demonstrates that there's room for both to co-exist, recognizing that there's (Nielson) fans of both shows who must now choose which show to watch live and which to record.

  22. Yay Human Target! Glad to see it's doing well in views. Hopefully this is enough to keep it from getting cancelled. Seems like it has a pretty solid fan base to me...we can't let FOX take it away!!! ;P
