-Ratings Breakdown:
It was another slam-dunk overnight Tuesday victory for CBS with its combination of NCIS (13.8 rating/20 share), spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles (10.8/16) and critically-acclaimed The Good Wife (8.7/14), which just snagged Julianna Margulies her second consecutive SAG Award victory. But The Good Wife’s adult 18-49 advantage in the time period will be nowhere as significant as the 123 percent in the metered markets over NBC’s distant second-place Parenthood (3.9/ 6).
NBC opened the evening with another two-hour edition of inspirational The Biggest Loser, which averaged a respectable 5.7/ 9 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Here is the half-hour breakdown:
The Biggest Loser (NBC)
8:00 p.m.: 5.4/ 8 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: 5.6/ 8 (#2)
9:00 p.m.: 5.8/ 9 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 5.9/ 9 (#2)
As always, look for The Biggest Loser to deliver among adults 18-49.
Elsewhere, ABC and Fox tied for distant No. 3 in the overnights, each with one hour of repeat programming. ABC opened with an encore telecast of on-the-fence freshman drama No Ordinary Family (#4: 2.8/ 4 at 8 p.m.), followed by V (#3: 4.0/ 6) and Detroit 1-8-7 (#3: 3.6/ 6) from 9-11 p.m. Although V did manage to build by 60 percent from the 8:30 p.m. portion of No Ordinary Family (2.5/ 4), a 4-rating in the overnights is certainly nothing to boast about. Nor is Detroit 1-8-7, which will be replaced by long-awaited Dana Delany crime solver Body of Proof in March.
Fox populated the night with a repeat of Glee (#3: 3.8/ 6), followed by the season (or series) finale of game show Million Dollar Money Drop (#4: 3.3/ 5), which is unlikely to return anytime soon. Had this been the dog days of summer, Million Dollar Money Drop would probably have been more welcome.
The CW aired original installments of One Tree Hill (#5: 1.7/ 3) and relocated Hellcats (#5: 1.3/ 3), which just do not resonate in the overnights. Eight seasons into its run, it is time for One Tree Hill to officially call it quits.

CWs ratings were down for this night. Many SPN and SV fans were threatening a CW boycott of all but their favourite, badly treated, shows this week. Has this had an impact? Personally I doubt there is much crossover between the fandoms of SV/SPN and Hellcats / OTH, so I'd be surprised if this was a big factor. Still these ratings for the CW are poor. They need to realise, and quick, how much they are going to need SPN next season and announce its renewal. If they did this before Friday it would a) generate a huge amount of publicity for the return from hiatus, and b) go a long way to winning back the goodwill of a very loyal and dedicated section of its viewership. Come on CW - you know you want to....
ReplyDeleteSome of The CW's shows were up this week or same as last few weeks , so it has not affected them too much if at all.... yet. That may change tonight, Thursday or Friday.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is most CW shows can get 2 millions viewers (give or take). SPN has tons of international fans but they don't count on the ratings... still the number one thing looked at by networks. Even their terrible shows get just under or just over 2 million any given week... not much less than SPN.. sometimes more. Supernatural is not part of the teen "pop culture" as much as their other series despite the depth at which the fans love the show. It may be the best show on the network, but it does not make them the most money. If they cancel SPN, they will plug in some new (most likely worse) series and get more buzz and similar ratings in the USA. Maybe better ratings even like The Vampire Diaries last year or Nikita this year to a lesser degree. Would any other network pick up Supernatural? I don't think so (but I hope). I prefer Supernatural to any show on the network, but in a strict business sense... I think Supernatural needs The CW as much and most likely more than The CW needs Supernatural.
#NOF did alright considering it was a repeat! I really really hope they can at least sustain 6 million viewers when it returns next week Tuesday! These last few episodes are make or break for the show!
ReplyDeleteV drop is not too worrying as NOF is a very bad lead-in and as snow storm couldn't allow more viewers to see the show in the east coast. As long as V stays over 5 millions of viewers and more, V still has a chance to come back for a third season. But I still think that V should come back in prime time.
