Question of the Day - Coolest fight/action scene in a Movie or TV show ?

23 Feb 2011

Today's question comes from rochey_1 who asks

"Coolest fight/action scene in a Movie or TV show?"

Wow, tough question. I'll start by listing some of my favorites before naming my overall winner.

Some my favorites are:

- Rocky vs Apollo in the original Rocky
- Ripley vs the Queen alien in the awesome sequel, Aliens
- Luke vs Vader in The Empire Strikes Back

Also as bonus here is the funniest one, from Fight Club :)

But on reflection I think my favourite is Neo vs Agent Smith from The Matix

So what about you, what are some of your favourites? If you can find them on YouTube please post links to them in the comments.

  1. The fight scene in the first season of Jericho where they go to battle against New Bern, I believe. "Nuts!"

  5. Oooh, I forgot that, yes, great scene and great show.

  6. Stiletto - Raine's fight in a stretch limo with Bills - after trying to stab him with trade mark stiletto knife, hitting him with a champaigne bottle in a tight red dress she gets kicked out the door before sitting up and emptying her gun into his chest!

  7. Have to agree with the scenes you listed.... all awesome!

    Best Solo fight Scene:
Ash vs Ash in The Evil Dead 2. Okay this is more funny than violent, but one of my favorites! Best man versus possessed hand fight ever.....

    Best Undead Fight Scene:
The "walker" attack in The Walking Dead episode 4 Vatos... Without doubt the best undead fight scene I have seen on network TV.

Best One Vs. Many Fight Scenes:
Viggo Mortensen's sauna scene in Eastern Promises. Brutal. I didn't know where I should NOT look.

    Best Epic Battle Scene:
Lord of the Rings Two Towers battle is epic in both scale and execution to me! We can argue for or against the Legolas stairway shield slide scene as good or bad, but one of the most epic fights scenes filmed to me.

    Best Sword Fight Scene (humorous):
The Princess Bride Indigo Montoya Vs. The Man in Black. Great combination of comedy and fencing. The banter of sword fighting techniques is hilarious!

Indigo~ "Because I know something you don't know... I am not left handed!" .... "There's something I ought to tell you.... I am not left-handed either"

  8. Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indiana is challenged to a swordfight. Evil swordsman shows off his skills, twirling his sword around like a baton. Indiana gives him a disgusted look, takes out his gun, shoots him.

  9. One of the most iconic scenes in film of the past 50 years I think!

  10. Olivia vs Faux-livia in Fringe season 2 finale.

  11. I'm going to stick with tv shows :

    - Most of the action scenes on 24 are the coolest and most well executed I've seen on television, they don't look cheesy and without budget like most shows on networks who try to have a little bit of action once in a while. There are too many of them in 24 to mention them all, but I'm just going to say a few words about one of them : Jack vs Abu Fayed in season 6. The whole scene was impressive. It ended with Jack saying "say hello to your brother" right before he hang Fayed with chains and watched him die, those were two great references to Die Hard and Die Hard 3, incredibly well thought. Some of the action scenes in the Die Hard quadrilogy are among the best I've seen too.

    - Several scenes in Breaking Bad. The ending scene in the parking lot with the mexican brothers and Hank was badass.

    - The wedding in the season 2 finale of Chuck.

    - The epic Lost finale fight scene is flawed because of the freaking commercial break. I mean, a cut at this point is just stupid. I thought this was one of the basic rules in television, you must try to make a smooth transition between what's before the commercial and after the commercial. When you don't have a 5 minutes break, it doesn't feel right. Giacchino's music is pretty loud and annoying before commercial breaks, that's not helping.

I agree with darq, the bathroom scene with Viggo Mortensen in Eastern Promises was harsh. Awesome movie.

  14. Chuck - anything that involves Casey. ;)

24 - C'mon, all the fights are bad***.

Dukes of Hazard - Luke doing that iconic roof slide on the General Lee.

  15. Neo vs Agent Smith (Matrix)
    The car chase (Matrix)
    Neo vs Morpheus (Matrix)

  16. A few of my favorites:

Sydney Bristow versus Fake Francie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weCzyBcEQv0
    Olivia versus Olivia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVmIHEdxNDI
    Beatrix versus Elle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf5fViIrpzA
Kahlan and Cara versus D'Harans: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkUYQ_5IqkY

  17. Definitely everything in The Matrix. I liked the gun fight in Equilibrium, too. And that scene in Wanted when James McAvoy goes all Terminator on the warehouse, while extremely over-the-top, had a certain fluidity to it that was appealing.

    The Bourne Trilogy--
In terms of pure, unadulterated badassery, this is it for me. Jason Bourne is without doubt one of the deadlist "realistic" characters I've ever seen in action. It's pure poetry to see this guy fight, and what's so cool is that someone can actually do that if they trained enough. That appeals to me much more than the whole fantasy/dystopian element fueling major action flicks nowadays.

  19. My favorite fight scene in any movie was the fight in Inception where the gravity keeps rotating: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvDba2nMv_U

In TV it would be Jack vs. Locke: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fwj8pqtiWlE

  20. Oh, I thought of another good fight scene I love...
HBO's Rome when Titus Pullo is sent to be killed in the Gladiatorial ring and Lucius Vorenus jumps from the stands to defend his brother in arms shouting "THIRTEEN!" This scene has it all... great choreography, brutal violence that makes you look away, the emotion of not wanting a character you love to die, and then the elation of unexpected help arriving.

  21. I love Bale and usually take note when e has movies coming out, but I missed this movie... Never heard of it. Very good fight scene. Fun to see close combat in a wide open space like that.

  24. One I have to mention (more for laughs then anything) is Puppet Angel Versus Spike :P

  25. Jason Bourne definitely has some of the coolest fight sequences, especially in Ultimatum. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) jumping off the roof into the window is probably one of the parts in the most epic, I feel.

More recently, NCIS:LA has had some cool action/fight scenes. The beginning of Season 2 when Callen is dreaming about chasing the mysterious gravesite visitor is one of my favorites (the parkour/choreography is just astounding!) In "Empty Quiver" when Callen and Sam are trying to stop a group of bad guys from stealing the truck with the nuclear weapon (though they don't know that at first). Also, in this past week's episode when Kensi is fending off her attackers and Deeks, who's injured, comes out of the hospital and puts a bullet through the bad guy's chest with Sam and Callen breaking speed limits just to save her. I could go on but there's just too many scenes from NCIS:LA that I can think of.

  27. Was mazing how much that puppet reminded me of angel!

It's in my all-time best funny fights list too with The Princess Bride sword fight I listed earlier and The Black Knight "fight" from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

  29. Thanks to darq for the idea for the list format.

Best Network TV Division Fight Scene:
"Human Target" reigns. I have a hard time deciding between Chance vs Baptiste or Guerrero vs anyone he's fighting.

Best Sword Fight Scene - Non-humorous
"The Adventures of Robin Hood" - Robin vs Nottingham (Errol Flynn version. It may be "old school" for some, but both actors actually were expert swordsmen in real life, and I miss the days when fight scenes were not beyond the realm of human abilities.)

Best Sword Fight Scene - Humorous Division:
"The Princess Bride" - Indigo Montoya Vs. The Man in Black.

Best older actors/characters whooping on younger opponents:
"Red" - Bruce Willis vs Karl Urban.

    Best Bond fight scene:
"From Russia With Love" - Sean Connery vs. Robert Shaw. The scene on the train.

Best Fight Scene in a Chick Flick:
"Bridget Jones' Diary" - Colin Firth vs Hugh Grant. When the two men are fighting after Grant's character crashed a small dinner party Bridget with Mark (Colin Firth) as company. I almost labeled this category: best wanker fight scene.

    Best Funny Fight Scene:
"The Legend of a Drunken Master" - Jackie Chan vs. Ken Lo

    Western Gunfight:
"The Shootist" - John Wayne's final film, the final scene.

Best Fight Scene just for its Cult Icons:
"The Way of the Dragon" - Chuck Norris vs Bruce Lee

    Best Duel Movie Scene:
    Luke vs. Darth Vader

Best One Vs. Many Fight Scenes in Movies:
"Serenity" - River vs the Reavers.

    Best Epic Battle Scene:
"Lord of the Rings Return of the King", the last battle is amazing. Plus Legolas & Gimli keeping count, the Oliphant and "That still only counts as one!"

    Best Brawl:
"McClintock" - John Wayne movie. I'm a sucker for the Duke

    Best Crazy Gibson -
    "Lethal Weapon". The ending.
