Last Week's Winners - Best One-Shot Antagonist or Monster
Last week we had some runaway winners and one close race. Since all polls have officially closed, here are the winners:
Season One - Shapeshifter Dean from Skin with 105 votes (23%) and then Bloody Mary with 95 votes (20%)
Season Two - Meg-Possessed Sam from Born Under a Bad Sign blew away all others with 205 votes (46%). The Djinn, darn, from What Is and What Should Never Be was in second with only 84 votes (19%).
Season Three - Casey from Sin City received 95 votes (24%) over a very close Madge Carrigan from A Very Supernatural Christmas with 91 votes (23%)
Season Four - Shapeshifter Dracula from Monster Movie had 134 votes (35%) while Ghost Meg Masters from Are You There God? It's Me, Dean Winchester had 71 votes (19%)
Season Five - Famine from My Bloody Valentine with 101 votes (24%) and Patrick from The Curious Case of Dean Winchester had 72 votes (17%)
This week's topic: Favorite Episode
This week we are going to nominate a little differently. Instead of nominating your favorite episode by season, everyone gets to nominate 12 episodes throughout seasons 1-5. They can all come from one season or be spread out. Just remember that your first 12 are nominated, but anything more than that gets cut-off. I honestly feel the hardest part of this week will be nominating. It's tough to choose. Also, you'll notice this has been re-named Favorite Episode instead of Best. So choose the ones you like best for whatever reason.
We will not include season 6 for now because it is only halfway done. For those of you new to nominating, we will nominate until the end of the day Tuesday (midwest USA time) and then begin voting on Wednesday. Voting usually remains open for about 2 days with a new poll each day until we get to the end of the week. Then I may release 2 polls at one time so that all results are finished by Sunday night. This allows me to put last week's winners on the next week's question's nominating page.

I really had a hard time choosing not to choose any season 5 episodes, but when I had to decide which episodes to reject, I thought which of them I'd rather watch over and over again and so I ended up with no episodes from season 5. As you can see, season 3 rocks my list with 4 episodes, although I was this close to putting here Death Takes a Holiday instead of The Kids. It was Ben vs Tessa, Pamela and Alastair and I'm still not sure if I chose right...
Oh and by the way, my taste must be way different from other SPN fans, cause I only voted for one out of the five best monster winners (Famine)...
ReplyDeleteThis should be easy.....NOT! Narrowing it down to just 12 is going to be a bitch here have been a lot more brilliant episodes over the years than there have been bad. Surprisingly season 3 has probably some of the best episodes of the series but it's quite often regarded as the weakest of all the seasons.

And I have a "complain" - why did we count LOST Finales ( Live together, die alone, Through the looking Glass, The Incident, The End ) as 1 episode, but not Supernatural - just because they don't air together in one night? And with SPN I have to decide which "All Hell breaks loose" was better - part1 or part2 ( just like with Fringe's "Over There ) ... that's just mean

And now that I think of it, I'm glad we're not doing season 6 for now, cause it would make limiting down to 12 episodes even harder. I'd definitely need to consider putting You Can't Handle the Truth and Appointment in Samarra (my fav season 6 episodes so far) on the list.

I've seen it at least 100 times and every time it gets me. I'll never get tired of this episode. There are others that I've adored also, but none as much as WIaWSNB. If only it had a shorter title. :-)

ReplyDeleteare you kidding me? The Kids Are Alright is on my favourite episode list! I also liked Dream a Little Dream of Me - perhaps not a favourite, but definitely not a bad episode! The Rapture! You disliked the Jimmy-the-vessel-of-Castiel story and Misha's amazing acting? And come on, those season 6 episodes weren't all that bad either! I actually loved Live Free or Twihard, regardless of the wasted comedy potential it had.
ReplyDeleteI agree on Bugs and Criss Angel, though. Don't remember No Exit and Hollywood Babylon that well and I still haven't made myself watch Route 666, so I really can't tell. I do know that I strongly disliked Ghostfacers. I could name some season 5 episodes I found rather boring, so I guess those would count as my least favourite ones too.
I finally gave myself a time limit to choose because I started adding things back in until I ended up with more than I started with. Glad to hear I wasn't alone in my waffling.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain. There are so many shows that I watch where it would be a struggle to come up with 20 really outstanding episodes. I'd end up filling in the bottom with shows I thought were merely great. On Supernatural it is harder to come up with 20 episodes I despised. It's the mark of a great show it is when I feel stronger about Supernatural's mediocre episodes than I do about many show's great episodes.

ReplyDeleteI don't have much luck on these polls either. Of the 14 we've done, I've only agreed with 5 and most of those were really close. I expect my average to go way down at the end of this set too. By the way, I'm going to cry (figuratively) when What Is and What Should Never Be loses to All Hell Breaks Loose - part 2. I'm already dreading that poll and we haven't even finished nominating yet.
ReplyDeleteSeason 3 is my "If only" season. If only the writers' strike hadn't gummed up the works, it probably would have been my favorite season. There was just so much good at the beginning of the season.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain and hate to add to it, but All Hell Breaks Loose - part 1 and 2 count as two separate episodes. You need to cut one more out of your list. (ducks under the table to hide)
ReplyDeleteTo me season 2 will be a tough choice between In My Time of Dying and What Is and What Should Never Be. IMHO, All Hell Breaks Loose has nothing on these two (which doesn't mean it's not a great episode), so I'll feel your pain if it wins.

ReplyDeleteHa!! If we did everyone's top 50, the only episode that wouldn't be in the running would be Bugs (at least I hope it would be out). I did consider skipping the nominating phase and going straight to voting, but then everyone would be mad at me for only letting them choose one. :-) Think of it as preparing your choice for the vote. Hopefully it will make it easier.

ReplyDeleteSeriosuly I'm still freaking out about Death Takes a Holiday. I do mostly because noone else has nominated it and I'm afraid it won't get into polls. I probably won't vote for it anyway (too much in love with On the Head of a Pin... which also means I will have to leave out season 4 premiere and finale and it will also be painful), but the least I can do is to make this episode appear in the poll, where it belongs as a total ass kicker... right? But when I think of ditching any episodes from the ones I named, it's too painful!! Maybe I just should give up on an episode that has already been nominated by others?

But in the end, it definitely comes down to Route 666 and Bugs for me. Or anything with Becky. Or Ghostfacers. Or Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things. Hmm, maybe it won't be as easy as I thought.
We have completely opposite tastes. There are several here in my top 30 favorite episodes, and a couple in your favorites that are in my top 30 worst episodes. I love that Supernatural has enough depth to incorporate both of our tastes.
ReplyDeleteBut hey, we do agree on Bugs, No Exit, Route 666, and probably The Rapture if the list is expanded by another 10 episodes. On the flip side, I agree with Mystery Spot, Bad Day at Black Rock, and A Very Supernatural Christmas. Those were all awesome!
Mia, out of all the nominations, yours most resembles my top 25 list. We have similar tastes. And I completely agree about Ghostfacers. Not only was it a bad episode. Not only did I have to suffer through Hell House 2. But it had the absolute worst timing of any episode with the exception of Route 666. Ghostfacers took one of the only 4 episodes they had to tie up the Dean going to hell plotline. What the heck were they thinking! There was absolutely nothing in that episode that couldn't have waited for season 4. I don't think I would have as much of an issue with the episode if it had been on the middle of season 4. Then it would be just a waste and not a colossal flaw in judgment.

ReplyDeleteBy yeah, my top 10 worst would be: Bugs, Route 666, Sin City, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Heaven and Hell, No Exit, Exile on Main Street, The Magnificent Seven, Dead in the Water, Sex and Violence.... They all had their moments (except for the first 2), but overall, these are the only ones I just would never watch twice.
"There was absolutely nothing in that episode that couldn't have waited for season 4". Except for the "is it...cancer?" line. Come on, it was funny! But a love it or hate it ep if there ever was one.

It's not just you. Here's what I really liked - it did completely end the 5-year plan and it would have been a complete end for the show minus the last 2 minutes if it had ended. It was the first episode to completely star Metallicar and she deserves more love. Bobby didn't stay dead for long. It gave me hope that I would never see Adam again.
ReplyDeleteHere's my issue - too much Chuck, way too angsty and too little plot. I expected the Apocalypse to be bigger, but that was a season-long issue more than just this episode. But I also felt like I had seen it before. And that's my biggest issue. The whole time I was thinking I already saw this on Buffy. I knew Metallicar was going to be the yellow crayon most of the way through. I knew Dean would be Xander and that Sam was Black Magic Willow. I get that it was pulling at heartstrings, but my head was so bothered by this that my heart got sidetracked. In the end, it was the first time when I liked the penultimate episode better than the season's finale. Looking back, I usually don't like the penultimate episode because it's all the emoting and the final is the action. In season 5 it was reversed and as such Swan Song is a very good episode to me but not fantastic.
However, most fans loved Swan Song and I expect it to lead the poll. You are one of the first I've heard who didn't think it was awesome either. But then again, I think season 6 is vastly superior to season 5 and that's not a popular opinion either.

I'm not crazy about Swan Song either. I mean, I love what you hate, the Chuck voiceovers in it. And I loved the very end, pretty much from the moment Sam jumped in. It was one of the saddest things I've seen. But other than that, the episode was empty for me. Season 4 finale was almost all talking and still I think it had much more action in it and was way more intense.

ReplyDeleteBut for me the WORST EVER is Family Matters. I mean come on, we come back from the most torturing hellatus ever, after I Know What You Did Last Summer and Heaven and Hell, and we get an episode so bad that it was literally painful to watch.
Also the episode after that Criss Angel Is a Douchebag was boring as hell. And the one with the tooth fairy and that Jesse kid... what is the title of that...
So yeah I could come up with a top 10 worst anytime, too.

That's exactly what I thought. If they could've fleshed out a few more episodes...the season would probably even beat season 4. Then again, there's also the whole "if only they'd seen it ahead of time" and they made an amazingly compact 16-episode season that would be more like cable shows and would've probably been more compelling... oh well

I love The Rapture...Jimmy was great, and we Dean finally sees Sam's habit...which leads straight into the final 2 eps...

ReplyDeleteI don't get all the hate around Family Remains. I loved it. Perhaps I don't feel your pain, because I wasn't up-to-date yet then (beautiful times of watching 5 episodes in a row...), so I didn't know it was after the hiatus and all, but I really enjoyed it. It was like back to horror roots for once in all that angel-66 seals drama. It felt like season 1 again and I loved it. And the story was way better than in The Benders IMO. The confess by Dean was indeed a bit too early after Heaven and Hell, but apart from that, I really liked the episode.

Guh, his happy face in the firework scene during DSoM and when he's arguing with Sam while he's detoxing? Gorgeous work by the kid who Jared and Jensen love working with for his hard work.
