Supernatural – Renewal Likely or D.O.A.?

15 Jan 2011

The Winchesters have battled ghosts, demons, and even the apocalypse. But one battle they constantly have to wage is the right to return to our screens for another year. With Supernatural's sixth season in full swing, Sera Gamble has more than proven that she can handle the show with as much heart as Eric Kripke. While fans may not like everything she's thrown at us, we keep returning to watch the further adventures of our favorite brothers. And now is the time when our thoughts turn to wondering if a renewal will be on the horizon.

Show predictors have mainly been favorable on the possibilities of a seventh season, with none saying outright that a seventh season is out of the cards. TVByTheNumbers and SpoilerTV have both deemed Supernatural safe from cancellation. Over at Entertainment Weekly, they're taking a more guarded approach and not putting their eggs in either basket.

However, those closest to the show have good feelings about a return. Jim Beaver, who plays Bobby on the hit show, tweeted to a fan that while no official word has come down, he has no reason to doubt that a seventh season will be coming. Even the president over at the CW, Dawn Ostroff, told E! "...it's doing better on Friday night than it was on Thursday night—so I can't imagine we won't pick it up."

The attention that Supernatural has been getting among fan votes has been amazing. They recently won their first TV Guide cover and won E! Online's poll for Best Show of 2010. With the amount of viewers, coupled with the expansion of the Supernatural universe into the spin-off series Ghostfacers and the upcoming Supernatural anime, it would seem unwise to kill it off. But until we get official word, fans will just have to wait and watch as the show returns to our screens on January 28th.

  1. oh, no... a seventh season?? what the hell are they going to fight now?? evil pokémons?
i'm so very tired, it should have ended on the fifth season!
(i'm so gonna die after posting this...)

  2. We are so getting a seventh season, which I'm extremely happy about! I still love this show. Watched it since the beginning and I will be there until the end.

Doubt there'll be a season eight, though.

    ReplyDelete
  3. those who are unhappy with the show or think it should have ended... there is a simple fix for that... don't watch the show.

    ReplyDelete
  4. As much as I haven't been season 6's biggest fan and would like the boys to have a chance to go and do something else it would be ashame for it to go out with season 6 being a sad on to 5 good seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I really think it will get renewed. With this season, there seems to be a lot more attention being paid to the show. They have been recognized by TV Guide and other things as well. Fans also seem to be more vocal about this season.

  6. I have a horrible feeling CW won't let this show end much like Smallville and will continue to drag it out. I firmly believe shows should have an endgame a set number of seasons and stick to it (like Lost and BSG) rather than go on and on and inevitably lose that spark of creativity that made them so great to begin with.

  7. I think a 7th season is likely, this is what Jensen said about season 7 in Barcelona in June before season 6 even started.
"I'm just saying that if I was a betting man I would probably put money on at least another, a 7th season but I don't know crazier things have happened....This is Smallville's last year so to give up two shows, two big shows for one network in one year would be a big hit, but who knows."

Considering Supernatural has been doing better than other CW shows that are on 'better' nights I dont think they would cancel both their Friday shows. I guess we will find out for sure in a few months or maybe sooner.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I actually thought the latter seasons of Smallville (7-10) were much, MUCH better than the earlier ones, but I guess that's subjectivity for you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  9. A lot of people forget that the CW is run by Warner Brothers and CBS. And as you remember Smallville,Supernatural and One Tree Hill were all WB shows. As long as the ratings are steady and the actors and producers want to continue Supernatural it will be on the CW. It does make money for the Warner Brothers/CBS as it is syndicated on TNT, DVD/Merchandise/Episode DL sales, Broadcast Rights in other Countries. And as far as I know Supernatural is the biggest syndicated show CW has going right now. If Warner Brothers wasn't happy with it, Season 5 would have been it. I mean Warner Brothers/CBS (that who the CW is) did extended Ackles and Padalecki's contracts to Season 7 this past Summer, why would they do that? It's because the figured more then likley depending on just a ratings failure on Friday they would renew it.

  10. After this first dismal half of season 6, I hope the CW gives this show a merciful cancellation.

    ReplyDelete
  11. From the ratings, I think a lot of people are taking this advice. I know I am.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I actually haven't watched Smallville since S5 I was more using it as an example of CW continuing shows for what feels like eternity ha

    ReplyDelete
  13. The season 6 Alpha plot line has been far more satisfying than weepy Satan was for me in season 5. I think they have a lot of untapped monster lore that shows great potential.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Actually the ratings have remained fairly steady for a move to Friday nights. Most shows see a far greater reduction in viewers and its holding its own in Smallville retention. Everything I have read says that Supernatural's numbers have been very impressive compared to predictions. In fact, I would say that the people who are using ratings as an example of how everyone hates SPN now are actually proving the opposite point.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Before this season started, I would have agreed with you. I was leery and sometimes vocally concerned about where they would go after the Apocalypse. However, I have found this season to be one of the more enjoyable ones for me, especially when compared to last season. I like the re-boot and think there is much life in Supernatural still.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Then why are you still here? I mean, I get it that you're disappointed because you don't enjoy watching the show anymore, but... there's nothing you can do about it, is there?
It happened to me with both the X-Files and the Star Wars prequels. X-Files stopped being fun for me somewhere between seasons 5 and 6, and I wish I had never even seen the SW prequels. But I'm going to continue to support SPN because I still truly enjoy watching it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Não gosta, pare de assistir. Simples.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well, judging by the spoilers and the episodes that we've already seen this season, I don't think Supernatural is going to lose that spark of creativity any time soon:)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well, if you are tired of watching it, there is a simply solution. ;D Stop watching it. Do you got any clue how they're gonna wrap up the alpha storyline, Sam's soul storyline (puting up a wall without poking at it is lame) and the angelic civil war in ... 11 episodes? There. No need for pokemon. They can came in season 8. ;D

    ReplyDelete
  20. In fact I enjoy Smallville now. Started watching if after season 4 because I couldn't stand it before that.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think they would be stupid to cancel it but I don't trust the CW or Dawn the demon Ostroff. She leaves, she can say what ever she wants. I hope that there will be a seventh season but I don't want to be too optimistic in case they cancel it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well a set number of season didn't help Lost. The ending was still horrible.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Actually, evil pokemons would be sorta cool...

    KIdding. :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Gosh, he was such a cry baby! I still don't get why the demons needed him.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'll admit that Season 6 has been underwhelming to say the least, but that is not in any way going to stop me from watching the show. Even sub-par Supernatural plot is much better than most of the other drivel being aired today. It's going to take something outrageous and completely un-Supernatural to make me stop watching... like a love triangle with Sam, Dean and a girl a la The Vampire Diaries, or something to that extent.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'd say likely. And if we ended on season 5(My least favourite.) I would've cried.

    ReplyDelete
  27. That's normal. You can't like every season. I think if they would have continued with the season 1 formula I would have never become a fan. Have you found a new show that you like? :D

    ReplyDelete
  28. I actually feel like now that they're really getting closer to the Superman mytharc of Smallville, the show has gotten 1000% more interesting than the earlier seasons. One of the most frustrating things for me in the first five seasons or so was that Clark wasn't close to becoming Superman yet ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. The over-all story arc is much more plot heavy this season.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The anime got 22 episodes, maybe there gonna hunt Pikachu's evil twin in one. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  31. A lot of us actually loved it *shrugs*

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes, a basic Lucifer conversation would look like this: "Destiny...Rage...God...Destiny...Sammy...Rage...God...Destiny...Sammy... Say Yes... Blah Blah Blah."

    ReplyDelete
  33. I find this season so uneven and really frustrating at times. My biggest problem with SPN is the way it treats the secondary characters, they keep bringing in great ones then killing them off (Gabriel, Crowley) for me the show isn't just about Sam and Dean I want to know more about the civil war in heaven or what's happening in hell and not just monsters of the week.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I hate the angel civil war story (and anything to do with angels anymore - I feel they are played out) and hope to never revisit it, but I definitely agree about killing off my favorite people. Gabe and Crowley are the two big ones in recent history.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lana killed it for me. Haven't revisited whole episodes after I wanted to poke my eyes out watching her in season 2/3. I will probably go back over the summer when I have lots more time.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Please do not even think that. I would hate to tulpa it into creation. Shudders!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Or why they wanted him? They were far snarkier and clever without him. Plus they had one less to share power with.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You know he is going to poke at it and somehow everything is going to come crashing into his mind. Should be interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The show is about Sam and Dean, but I am interested in what is happening with the angels. I do like that side story.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Loved the first half of season 6.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Maybe they were afraid of him, Azazel and Lilith so they pretended to want him. Not likely but that's what I like to tell myself.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't like this new storyline, sorry. It feels wrong for me, but it's my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I enjoyed "weepy Satan" last season. And I remember then most people were kissing Mark Pellegrino's ass for being such an amazing and creepy Lucifer. What happened now??

    ReplyDelete
  44. Not me. I found him to be the lamest part of the lamest Apocalypse know to man. I think Mark Pellegrino is awesome but that the way they wrote his part was way off to me. Alastair and Zachariah were the real bad guys of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  45. That would be the best storyline ever.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I much preferred Lucifer!Sam from The End. I wish that rendition of Lucifer could have had more chance to be seen. However, the inclusion of Death both last season and this season has made me extremely happy!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I foresee a screaming Sammy as the wall comes tumbling down and we end for the season finale (thus leaving us wondering "what's gonna happen next season?!" all summer long).

    ReplyDelete
  48. As long as the storyline is there, I want the show to continue. So far, Sera has done a good job of giving us "Supernatural: The Sequel" which was the intention.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Ostroff actually thinks the ratings have gone up (from my research, I see the ratings as having remained steady). I think that's phenomenal for a move in the schedule!

  51. Is someone told me back in Season One that the show would have Satan, God, angels, etc I would have thought they were crazy. But the evolution of the storyline was so organic that it made perfect sense.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Though they have been doing other things (well, Jensen has) with voice work. I do get sad, though, when they miss out on other projects because of SPN commitments. Jim Beaver and Jensen have both been in that situation that I know of.

    ReplyDelete
  53. They're certainly getting more attention, which is good!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Well, when networks find a show that works (and makes money) they don't want to let it go easily ;) And both Jensen and Jared have said they don't want to be in Tom Welling's situation where the show drags out for too long.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hey, Rufus is still alive! And I do hope they find Gabe in Purgatory. I miss him :(

    ReplyDelete
  56. Death and Crowley were the two best additions to season 5. Truly bright spots in the SPN 'verse.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Losing Smallville makes it much more likely that SPN will stick around. The network can't afford to lose both their powerhorses at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Exactly!

(Also, I really wish One Tree Hill would just end. It's lived way past its prime.)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I wasn't ready to let go in Season Five, but I did see (if they had ended it) how the storyline had been sufficiently tied up and I would have been okay with that.

    ReplyDelete
  60. And I agree with that. When the lead characters are tired of doing the series, it should end. That simple. No drawing out like The X-Files. I am ecstatic that they want to continue but I will also support them when they want to move on. I look forward to supporting whatever they do next. Let's just hope it's not more horror movies because I can only take so much Devour, Friday the 13th, and My Bloody Valentine. :-P

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm just hoping he makes it through the episode that they are currently shooting. If he dies, it will make my favorite SPN spin-off show difficult. You know the one were Bobby and Rufus team up to hunt together and squabble like old married people the whole way. That's so much awesome my TV might explode.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Even the actors seem to be rooting for its demise.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Jensen's been doing quite well in the voiceover market (which I appreciate because he was an awesome Red Hood!) The fact that he's got his foot in the door on that one has set him up to have a number of future opportunities.

(As an aside...I actually liked My Bloody Valentine;)

    ReplyDelete
  64. I would totally watch that show! I adore Rufus and I definitely love his and Bobby's friend-enemy relationship.

    ReplyDelete
  65. while i'm a huge Supernatural fan you have to consider that the CW are only keeping it running to avoid losing another friday night show, with Smallville ending this season ratings on the channel will drop considerably. Not sure there's much more they can do with Dean and Sam, for me Sera focuses on what she'd like the characters to do rather than what the characters actually would do when faced with these situations. That said i'm enjoying season 6 so far but there's only so long they can drag it out.

    ReplyDelete
  66. they all gave me the creeps, especially Alastair and Lu. but that's my opinion...

    ReplyDelete
  67. Did you read the article's title ?

Were discussing the show's chances of getting renewed, who cares if you or somebody else didn't like the first part of the season, you can talk about that somewhere else.

The ratings only will tell if SPN will get a 7th season, and so far it's looking great.

    ReplyDelete
  68. just because I don't know how it's gonna end it doesn't mean I must enjoy it. Lost is a good example.

    ReplyDelete
  69. at least it would be funny. or not.

    ReplyDelete
  70. also the thing about Sam scratching the wall I definitely agree that he'll do it, I think it'd be an interesting twist to have it that Death has placed the wall as a way of keeping Lucifer out, when Sam scratches he crawls back in and regains control. Like Samifer said 'in the end' no matter which paths they choose, no matter which details they alter they'll always end up in that position, he wins so he wins.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Though I don't like the whole Apocalypse: The Sequel storyline, you make it sound horrifyingly awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Calm down, she has the right to say her opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Not when every article is an occasion to point out how the show sucks. That's not what it's about it, is it ?

    ReplyDelete
  74. I believe Supernatural will definitely get a 7th season....and the way it's going, I'd like to see an 8th....there's huge potential out there for new stories to be told, and if everyone involved is keen to continue, I say go for it.
Other shows go on for a lot longer and still maintain a high standard, so I see no reason why Supernatural can't do that.
The first part of S6 has been a little uneven, but hey, we have a reboot in progress...new showrunner (even though Sera has been around since day 1, it must be daunting to follow in Kripke's footsteps)....new writers and new directors this season too....
I'm loving it and looking forward to seeing where the rest of the season takes us. And like I said, based on what I've seen, I'd be up for a 7th and even 8th season

    ReplyDelete
  75. As long as the storyline is there, J2 have said they'll be around...and so shall I :)

    ReplyDelete
  76. No offense meant to anyone, but you're right. It's not wheter or not you like the show, it's whether or not you think it'll get cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Talk about flogging a dead horse. Time to put the Supernatural baby to bed. Should have done that after S4 really.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Disagree 100% with your statement as that would mean the series ending with Lucifer escaping. Love, love, love your icon! I'm still snickering. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Just like a lot of us is loving SPN right now and don't want it to end *shrugs*

    ReplyDelete
  80. You think it's dismal, I love it. What's the saying? Opinions are like ... - everybody has one *shrugs*

    ReplyDelete
  81. so agree with both of you there. It is reminding me of 7th Heaven. Drug out to the point where there was a campaign to cancel it. I could not believe the fans. The show did 3 finales and the fans still wanted it to come back. Finally they had said enough and actually went out on a low note instead of the high note they would of had in the first Series finale. OTH is hitting that point. They keep on bringing in new characters hoping that it refresh the show, but people don't care about the new people it has always been about Brooke, Haley, Nathan, Mouth and Skills. I could care less about Chase, the actress (see can't even remember her name), or any of the others. Please just let that show end :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. Gosh, now you've scared me O.O! Shhhhhhhhh! Don't give the writers ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I never understood how fans can want to see a show canceled. Beyond my comprehension.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I can agree with you there Louise. It is like they drop these huge storylines and then just drop them. Kind of like throwing half-eaten bacon cheeseburger out the window. I want to know more about purgatory. But really WTH is up with the monsters mounting an army. We have heard NADA about that since in was mentioned.

I know they said they were suppose to done with the apacolypse and everything, but how can you have Raphael show up, talking about how he wants to restart the end of days....then have Cas say it is not going so well up there for him. What if Raphael wins the war???? WTH is going to happen to Sam and Dean then??? They just can't leave those storylines out there on the sidelines.

Especially for me, b/c while I am watching the show....these things are in the back of my head and I am always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Oh and if Monsters or other creatures go to purgatory....then where do demons go when they have their bones burned or stabbed with Ruby's special knife. Do they go to hell or purgatory??? When they are exorcised they go back to hell. They seem tooo scared to be going back to hell. Purgatory???? If that, then did Crowley get exactly what he wanted???

Ugh!!! Shutting up now. Head spinning. 13 days. 13 days. 13 days.....

    ReplyDelete
  85. I'm really enjoying this season so far (especially if it goes where i think it's going)! I think the writers have done an excellent job of misleading the fans (especially in the teasers for the next week). I'll watch Supernatural for as long as they can keep this up!

With the depth of mythology and the continuity of the character arcs,, the series feels more like a series of novels than a TV show... This is amazingly good :-)

    ReplyDelete
  86. The mythology and arcs of SPN continue to impress me. I'm loving it!

    ReplyDelete
  87. I'll be fucking pissed if Supernatural gets cancelled

    ReplyDelete
  88. Personally I think the angels arc which started in S4 was the best thing that ever happened to the show so seeing them handle it so badly at the end of S5 and for S6 (so far) is a big disappointment

    ReplyDelete
  89. That's the thing they have so many storylines with so much potential but they just don't handle it very well! I know people say its all about Sam and Dean but seriously the mythology is so damn interesting the show could really go on for a lot longer if they actually used it properly instead of when it suits them.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I thought exactly the same. I'm happy the Apocalypse storyline is over and I don't want it back, but this would be both logical and interesting to watch. I would even be ok with the series ending with a The End ending kind of scene. With Lucifer's "I told you so". It would be kind of masochistically amazing.

Although I do believe what Lucifer said in The End has already come to life. Sam did say yes to him, while Dean did not to Michael. The details were different, there was so white suit, but we did see Dean confronting Lucifer in Sam's body. And then there is another thing, the wall Death put was to hid Sam's memories from hell, not Lucifer. It's not like Sam and Lucifer are conjoined for life. Even if they shared a body, they were still two different spirits/souls. I believe Death just saved Sam's soul, leaving Lucifer, Michael and Adam in the cage (poor Adam, by the way - I really hope we'll see the boys trying to save him as well in the future. When they get over Sam's hell and post-hell trauma.)

    ReplyDelete
  91. I already thought the fairies episode was very un-Supernatural. I mean, this is as far as they can go with weird in my opinion. But even though, I still enjoyed it (hey, trying new is great and I respect them for having the courage to do it)

    ReplyDelete
  92. Yes, Jared's Lucifer in The End was truly amazing. As I said somewhere, it was the only time in the entire season I thought he was creepy. And made look powerful. Too bad Jared didn't manage to pull it off that well at the end of the season. But apart from this one episode, Lucifer had nothing on Alastair and Zachariah.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I only wish they have a storyline for Dean for the future. This season is all about Sam and what's wrong with him. I thought his possible domestic life with Lisa could be it, but they cut it short so quickly. Really, I want Lisa and Ben back in his life someday. As bas as it sounds, I quietly hope sth nasty is gonna be after Ben (or Lisa) so that Lisa (or Ben) would have to call Dean and he'd come and save them again. And teach Bean how to defend himself (no, not to make him a little hunter - just so he knows how to protect himself and his mom).
Although I'm still supercurious to see what happens with Sam. And Alpha's (especially with that great twist Crowley's death was). And Cas (need more of him asap).

    ReplyDelete
  94. I do hope they still have sth meaningfull and big for the angels, otherwise I agree bringing them back was useless. As much as I love Cas and will have severe heartaches if he ever leaves the show (or maybe they should just have him fall to be a real human? then we could have Cas, but no angels in the show).

    ReplyDelete
  95. Awesome. And to add my two cents about this season, I LOVE the new mythology. It has the intrigue of the first 2 seasons but the complexity of the fourth and fifth. I love it. As for individual episodes, it took them a while to find their feet again, but they're improving almost weekly now! I'm very excited about what I've heard about the second half of the season. I can definetly see this expanding into a seventh season. Maybe not more, but let's not go there yet.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Lana did get annoying, didn't she? But she leaves don't worry! You might want to skip season 4 though, it's really Lana heavy.

    ReplyDelete
  97. This is a show that had a suicidal Teddy Bear and featured a Dracula ordering pizza with a coupon...and you think that the Faeries episode was too bizzarre? :P

    ReplyDelete
  98. I'll echo what others have said. If you're tired of the show, stop watching. It's not a judgment, it's the best solution for you.

I won't lie, I had my problems with this season. I hated Soulless!Sam with passion. Some people like him, fine, it's their opinion. I just happened to hate him because it was this that made the show distance itself of what it was, because of the interactions between the brothers. Well, this and the fact that I miss the full Sammy a LOT.

Now that Sam will be back, I'm sure things will get better to me. I can't wait for the show to return and see the brothers being themselves again.

Now, if you can't take it anymore and are tired of giving it a chance, please, think about the some of us who still enjoy, love the show and aren't prepared to say goodbye yet. Try to stop wishing it gets canceled and just... move on. I'm not saying that you aren't allowed to express your opinion. You are. I'm just saying... Let the rest of us have our fun and our boys.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Thank you CW for the good news of learning that our favourite show 'Supernatural' will be (hopefully) renewed for a seventh Season and eighth, nine and many more in the future...As I always say, 'Supernatural' is and will remain the best show ever on this planet thanks to our two gorgeous hottest stars of this Universe...Supernatural is doing so well right now with the greatest storyline so far of Season 6 ( Soullest robot-Sam) ..so they have to keep ' Supernatural' up and running ...NO ! No!! they can't get rid of our beloved 'Winchesters Bros' that easily ..Cause we, the loyal 'Supernatural' Fans will kill the new CW boss if ever they come to that.. Please, bring on Season 7 or else ...You've been warned CW !!

    ReplyDelete
  100. The things I've heard about from the second half of the season has gotten me really excited!

    ReplyDelete
  101. ...well, they tacked on a sixth season. lol
It was supposed to be 5 seasons, but they spread out the storyline through six seasons because ABC was desperate...

    ReplyDelete
  102. thanks for your comprehension, that's exacly how I feel about the show. But, as I said somewhere around here, I am a huge fan and it REALLY HURTS to see my favorite show going downhill like this. Maybe, when Sam gets back to normal, the show will be good again, and that's why I still give it a chance, I watch it.
But even if things get back to normal, I still don't think the storyline is strong enough to demand a new season, cause it would be filled with maaaany stupid filler episodes while the actual storyline could be resolved in half a dozen episodes.
As a fan, I have to be able to admit when it's time to let a show go... Sorry if it bothers other fans, but it's what I think... =/
