Question of the Day - What character/show has left a lasting impression on you?
Jan 13, 2011
SpoilerTV ArticleToday's Question of the Day comes from rochey_1 who asks.
"What character/show has left a lasting impression on you?"
For me, the show that most springs to mind has to be the X-Files. It's the first show that I become obsessed with and one that started me getting online to find out more when the internet was still pretty young. Even today I find myself watching my old DVDs of the show and still enjoying the stories and acting.
More recently as you might have gathered by now, I'm a LOST fan and it still leaves a large whole in my life when I think about all the excitement and obsessing I did with that show.
What about you? What shows have left a lasting impression on you?

LOST really got me into series, but there hasn't been one that has me wanting to see the next episode as bad as LOST. The one that comes closest is smallville probably, I caught up on it really late but I love it so much and I watch the episodes as soon as I can (I don't live in America so I have to download them the next day).
ReplyDelete24 is what got me into TV series but Being Erica is probably the most relatable TV series
ReplyDeleteThe first show ... it will be Alias. It's my first obsession and change my life...
ReplyDeleteand recently it will be Fringe !
Angel was the first show I became really obsessed with - and then there was Buffy of course.
ReplyDeleteShow - I'd probably have to say Grey's, as it's why I'm doing medicine in university. I'm sad. I know.
ReplyDeleteCharacters? God there have been a few.
- Juliet in Lost obviously, her death, well, still haven't got over that one.
- Chloe in 24, seriously, she could not have got more awesome. Basically, her relationship with Jack was so special.
- Number 6 in Battlestar, Tricia Helfer's struggle between Cylon and human was so good.
There's loads more. I mean I could literally go on for days about this, but those are some of the more memorable ones.
x files!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid I watched Buffy and Charmed, and sometimes the X-Files. I really enjoyed Charmed until Supernatural came out. That's when I became obsessive about tv...
ReplyDeleteLOST!!!! it's without a doubt my biggest tv obsession.
ReplyDeleteThe first major scripted dramas I ever watched were the three major Star Trek franchises of the 80s and 90s. I was maybe 6 when ST:TNG ended and I got really into DS9 and Voyager. Those shows really embodied a lot of what I love. TNG and Voyager were the best of science-fiction procedurals, but DS9 is really what got me into heavily serialized television. It lead to Babylon 5 and ultimately LOST.
ReplyDeleteWhere I should started... there are too many, I love crime... so the most awesome show for me it's definitely Criminal Minds, it's why I study Criminology.
ReplyDeleteShow:
ReplyDeleteI grew up with Charmed, I've seen all seasons more than 5 times (re-runs) and I still love every minute of it. Charmed is and will always be my #1 favorite show because it made me who I am today.
Character:
I always had something for shows with strong women who can easily kick your ass, like the Charmed Ones and Buffy. All of them have made an impression on me, have changed me. Also Sarah Walker has made an impression on me, because well you can already guess, she's strong and you don't wanna mess with the ones she loves, because you won't live and last but not least Veronica Mars and I don't think I have to explain why, :P
LOST left a lasting impression on me. I've never been that dedicated to a show. And I've never been much of TV guy besides cartoons when I was younger. It's gotten me to want to find more well-written TV series, which has led me to start watching Dexter.
ReplyDeleteVictor from Burn Notice made an impression.
ReplyDeleteMe too X-files was my favorite show. then I became a lost fanatic...I did like the Outer Limit's the 90's version.
ReplyDeleteI also really like Breaking Bad excellent show...and just started watching Eureka it's pretty good.......but Nothing is close to LOST!
It will always be LOST. It made me the TV fan I am today. No show will likely do what that show did to me :P
ReplyDeleteCharacter wise I'll go with Jack. Over the course of the 6 seasons he was solidly brilliant, Locke had too many ups and downs, Ben lost it towards the end, Desmond wasn't important enough.
To me Jack always started my LOST craze and then ended it. Enough said for me...
Also, I seem to remember filling in a question form before Christmas but god knows what it was.
ReplyDeleteIs this imaginary or is there one somewhere in that Google Document of yours? :P
Definitely Gilmore Girls =) I still miss that show sometimes, especially when watching Pretty Little Liars and last year, a few episodes of Eastwick, which both use(d) the Gilmore Girls set.
ReplyDeleteL O S T.
ReplyDeleteJames "Sawyer" Ford.
Not only did JH have chemistry with every other actor on the show (notably, EL, EM, DDK, and MF), the character was so interesting (dark, tortured, full of potential for change and empathy, humor, heroism, etc.) and obviously a lot of fun to play. I tuned in weekly to see if Sawyer was gonna be cracking-wise and sweeping the ladies off their feet. The deeper levels of the character that were explored since S1 just kept on growing and becoming more compelling (for me) and it doesn't hurt that JH is pretty much the most beautiful male specimen I've ever laid eyes on (besides my own partner of course!)
Being Erica for me too
ReplyDeleteThe Sopranos, with Carmela being the character who most impressed me. She lived in a mob world that trapped her and altered her perceptions, yet she developed her own unique set of morals. I'm currently still in Lost mode, however, and Jack is the character I most admire for his courage, compassion, and work ethic
ReplyDeleteTwin Peaks was my first opsession. I still remember some of the lines. What a great show!
ReplyDeleteThe Lost came a long and got me hooked on Tv shows again. Once again a show with some great personallities.
There are some great shows running now, but nothing on the lines of lost and Twin Peaks. My two favorites at the moment are Fringe and Justified.
For me....House and Lost....When I was a kid, I loved Dark Shadows
ReplyDeleteBuffy. We had this ritual in undergrad of watching it together in our dorm. I still remember people wolfing down dinner, to get to the good seats in the tv lounge. Today if you say you have to go home and watch tv, people roll their eyes at you. But back then Buffy was a not-to-be-missed activity, and the first time I had really had that experience since I'd been more of a book-worm in my early teens. (Not to mention my high school classmates were into The Bold & The Beautiful which I refuse to watch to this day.)
ReplyDeleteI did see a few episodes of X-Files as a child, but hearing from others what that show has meant to them, it is clear to me that I was too young to truly appreciate it. So Buffy it is. First must-see experience, first purchase of the books based on the show or discussing the show. First introduction to a kick-ass heroine outside of books as far as I can remember.
I think I started getting into the whole "Internet-thing" (that I now can't live without LOL) because I was looking for info on a little known show called "Kindred, the Embraced". Since the show was cancelled after 6-7 episodes this was also my first introduction to fanfiction, fansites etc. Oddly enough when I tried watching it again a couple of years ago, I didn't think it was all that great. But hey it got me online. :)
Exactly the same for me, before Lost I only watched programmes on TV. After I watched the whole season 1 DVD I started on Prison Break, Heroes, The OC and then this escalated. It was also what made me check out darkufo and then spoilertv.
ReplyDeleteJack was the character which drew me in and the person that left the biggest impression on me.
For me it`s definitely Buffy! This show amazed me from the first episode and it got me online to find out more about it and to survive the long wait between the seasons ( I´m from germany) It was also the first show I bought all 7 seasons from ;)
ReplyDeleteI also loved the Xfiles, but Buffy was my first "love" lol.
These days I´m crazy about Supernatural ;P
Well, we already knew you liked this character. However did we figure that out -- let me think..........
ReplyDeleteLOST and its characters was a big part of my life, of course.
ReplyDeleteOther than that I would say:
- Stargate SG-1. Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson and Teal'c...man, I love those guys!! Thanks for the great 8 years (I've only seen bits of s9 & s10; never got into Atlantis; saw few eps of Universe. To me, it ended when O'Neill left).
- Battlestar Galactica. Saw the whole series in about a month two years ago and it did left a big impression on me. It's the closest thing to the 'Lost' experience for me in terms of TV shows with interesting characters and elaborate mythology that touches on 'big issues' that will never get solved (Lost on 'meaning of Life and death' and BSG on the nature of God).
- Dragon Ball Z. I was a little kid and this cartoon was my first exposure to long sprawling multi-character story.
The first was Charmed for me, and then Supernatural(still THE favorite). And know I watch plenty shows, to say at least:)
ReplyDeleteOf course I'll go with LOST.
ReplyDeleteIt's the very first show (and the only one) I become obsessed with, the first show that I watched FOR REAL without missing not even one episode, the first show that I downloaded on the Internet and the first that I watched in it's original language (I'm Italian so, it's not an usual thing to do here watching tv shows in other languages). Basically it's the main reason why I'm a such a rabid TV Shows-Watcher now.
For me it`s definitely Charlie Jade. I just can't stop rewatching it.
ReplyDeleteCharacter? 01 Boxer.
Other shows I loved: Lost, Stargate SG-1, Babylon 5.
For me it's NCIS. Tony DiNozzo was and still is my obsession. He's an interesting character and he is the reason I'm a film buff now.
ReplyDeleteoh my god what an excellent question! for me it will be Macgyver! he was the reason that i learned chemistry. i never missed an episode and i used to record it and hear in bed time- i learnt it by heart lol!
ReplyDeleteOne show that not a lot of people (and not enough) have seen that left an impression on me was Wire in the Blood. Two words... "Judas Chair".... 'nuff said! For those that like psychological crime drama with a very dark edge... I suggest you would love it!
ReplyDeleteLost definitely was an obeseion and still haunts me. No show (or barely any) compare to it on a level of depth, writing or acting that's on TV now. Plus every time I hear someone say "DON't TELL ME WHAT I CAN'T DO!" I always flash to Locke or one of the LOSTies!
And th elast show that still enters my mind daily despite not being on the air for years is Arrested Development! I cannot begin to count the number of times quotes from that series enter mind throughout the day!!
Veronica's snark would give even Dean Winchester a run for his money!
ReplyDeleteI caught a few episodes of Kindred when it aired (or in reruns not sure )and thought it was fun... may have to check it out again! I had forgotten about it....
ReplyDeleteChuck.
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt Lost. Lost was the first show (and only show) that really made me feel passionate about what I was watching. After discovering Darkufo that only enhanced my viewing pleasure with Lost. Oh how I miss you Lost :(
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I have been watching The Young and the Restless since I was 5 years old. Yeah it's a soap opera, but it's a wonderful guiltly pleasure that I have watched almost my entire life.
Geez, it's like we had the same television trajectory. I used to obsess over Charmed reruns on TNT after school ...and Veronica Mars O.o sheesh, Veronica Mars. No words can express...
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. Nobody does snark like Veronica Mars. Some of the stuff that girl says... lol
ReplyDeleteNo series can top Lost on my "obsession list", but the first US show that I became addict to was 24, and I have a special love for that series.
ReplyDeleteWow.... I was certainly a fan of exclamation points in this post.....
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely question, and something I've been thinking about recently as well. :) Definitely The X-Files and its characters (also supporting characters, not just main ones). This show was my first real 'fandom' and has stuck with me. <3 Also, shows that I watched and loved when I was a teenager, e.g. Northern Exposure and The Pretender. OH and OF COURSE, Stargate SG1!!! Super duper favourite. :D Jack O'Neill. :D
ReplyDeleteLIFE UNEXPECTED
ReplyDeleteThe X-Files and Buffy did more for me TV wise than any other. Before I primarily read and rarely watched TV. The X-Files brought me my first experience with online fandom and introduced me to fan fiction. Buffy was my first watercooler show. Typically I'm not into a lot of shows other people want to discuss - no Survivor or American Idol for me. But I could talk to students about Buffy and when I went back to college, I met other Buffy fans there.
ReplyDeleteNowadays, it is Supernatural and I think when it is done it will surpass both the X-Files and Buffy as my favorite and most influential series. For one, Supernatural is still going strong in its 6th season by which time Buffy had lost her prime. Second, Supernatural has an involved mytharc but doesn't get weighed down under its own weight like The X-Files did. But mostly it's because as much as I loved Mulder and Buffy, they do not have the same emotional weight to me as the Winchesters. That may change as time passes but Dean is the only character that has consistently engrossed me for 6 years. Usually after 3 years a character gets old to me. Also, Supernatural has required more of me as a fan. I've been involved in renewal campaigns, rejoined FB after much protest, started writing recaps, started on this site, learned how to do countless new things on the internet, got a blog, and much more. In short, Supernatural has become more a part of my everyday life than the X-Files and Buffy did.
shows I'm not sure there are too many to name, but characters that left a lasting impression I would have to say Denny Duquette from Grey's Anatomy.
ReplyDeleteFor me it would have to be lost and supernatural. Lost was the first big serial show I ever Watched.
ReplyDeleteIt had the big mysteries and was the first show to get me onto the Internet.
But then there's supernatural. My all time favorite show. Lost got me onto this site but it's supernatural and it's fans that keep me here
I guess both shows have changed my life pretty epicaly
Lost had a lot of great qoutes that I still use
ReplyDeleteI miss lost
I would have to say, as far as recent shows go, that Supernatural has definitely has a lasting impression on me. Even though I started watching it towards the last part of season 4 (the first episodes I ever saw were Sex and Violence and After School Special), I was instantly hooked. After that I started the entire series from the beginning and fell in love. I have rewatched the entire series multiple times since then and I cannot imagine my life w/o this show. I also cannot even remember what its like not watching the show (and its 2 GORGEOUS main characters)
ReplyDeleteBrooke Davis & One Tree Hill
ReplyDelete24 got me into thrillers
ReplyDeleteChuck got me into fun, action and dramedy
White Collar got me into crime and fun capers with Peter Burke and Neal Caffery
Angel got me into SPN, action and adventure.
V guilty pleasure....sometimes.
bingo i'm currently watching it and i'm loving it. :)
ReplyDeletefor characters i feel head over heels in love with Jack Bauer he became my ultimate hero on 24 and stayed that way through out the series and same thing happened with HRG from Heroes, John Casey from Chuck, Peter Burke owns my heart on WC, and Angel and Cordelia Chase from Buffy and Angel i'm loving together. :) and I still like Joshua from V.
ReplyDeleteI would have to say BUFFY and SPN the only two shows I've ever obsessed over
ReplyDeleteCharacters who have left a lasting impression on me-
SMG's Buffy Summers-strong, fiesty, kick-ass, kind, caring, managed to save the world and deal with being a teenager at the same time, I thought she was a pretty good role model in my teen years.
Sam Winchester- for me one of TV's best characters-hot and sexy, a real nice guy with serious issues (and a lot of them not your every day issues the average Joe has to deal with), courts controversy, divides a fandom, an unconventional hero, a man who makes mistakes and owns up to them, carries his guilt with his head held high instead of drowning in it and sets out to redeem himself instead of wallowing in self pity.
I'm a person who looses interest in things and even people very quickly so for the story of Sam Winchester to have held me captivated for 6 years is really something. He's not perfect but he is a good man and a character very close to my heart.
-Alias was my first obsession. That was the first time that waiting for a season to come out on DVD or for a channel here to start showing it wasn't enough for me.And my favorite character, one that I will always love, was Julian Sark(played by David Anders).I absolutely adored him, even though he was one of the bad guys.
ReplyDelete-Battlestar Gallactica.I saw it after it ended, but I am still impressed by it.Took me a little over a month to finish the whole series.
-More recently my biggest obsessions and, until now,my all time favorite shows are Numb3rs and,of course,Supernatural.
I discovered Numb3rs a year after it started.A friend of mine gave me the first season to watch while I was sick and I never missed an episode since.
I really don't know what to say about Supernatural.A few years back,if someone told me that I would get on a plane alone to travel to another country for three days,in order to meet the actors of a show,I would call him crazy. But I will do it in a few months. That's all I have to say!
The first show I became obsessed with was Popular. I loved it
ReplyDeleteLOST and Babylon 5 have both left a lasting impression on me. Both series had writers that did something DIFFERENT. 24 had an incredible twist to it as well, but B5 and LOST will always have a place in my heart.
ReplyDeleteI know it doesn't sound original, but ditto on everything you just said. Lost & Jack, my obsessions. I still miss them both like a member of my family died.
ReplyDeleteThere hasn't been another for me since Lost either. I find it hard to believe that there ever will be. Spoiled by Lost for any other t.v. show. There are plenty of others I enjoy, but I was downright obsessed with Lost, and Jack was always my favorite character. I fell in love with the show & its characters.
ReplyDeleteLost and Jack. I'm heartbroken now that it is over.
ReplyDeleteWow! I'm impressed by your dedication. No international plane rides for me I'm afraid. And I am missing Numb3rs too.
ReplyDeleteNot one mention of "Scrubs"? I'm disappointed!
ReplyDeleteLOST. . i really miss it. I miss that feeling of "omggg i cant wait to see what happens next!!" It had everything..great plot, amazing characters...even the bad guy (ben linus) was likeable...no show has ever been like it...ughh i miss it :(
ReplyDeleteFor show, absolutely no question. LOST literally altered my path in life.
ReplyDeleteCharacter... Tougher. Much tougher.
That's not that easy .... first of all X-FILES' Mulder and Scully of course because it was the first show I watched from the very first to the very last episode.
ReplyDeleteBut also JAG's Harmon Rabb (because he looked sooo good in dresswhites) and Law & Order SVU's Olilvia Benson - because of her past.
I'm an American, but the dedication you reflect here is the same as mine. Go Losties!
ReplyDeleteThe first was nip/tuck, then, LOST, Greys and the first season of Gossip Girl.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm totally obsessed with Vampire Diaries and Fringe.
As for the character Juliet in LOST, Elena&Damon in Vampire Diaries and Blair in Gossip Girl.
Well, don't imagine anything crazy...I'm going from Greece to Italy,it's not a huge trip(only a couple of hours)!
ReplyDeleteBut I always wanted to go to a Convention and until now this is the closest one!I am a little nervous, but I'm sure it'll be worth it!Have you ever been to one of the Conventions??
First the X-files, Then 24, But then LOST to me to a whole new level of obsession, Ive never in my life been so taken over by something, cant believe its gone. :-(
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke for me is the best tv character of all time, but Lost had many many great characters that complimented each other.
LOST got me hooked like no other tv show had done before (and I suspect ever will) but Twin Peaks is the closest I can relate to, regarding "obsession".
ReplyDeleteAs I said before somewhere else (@darkufo...), until Twin Peaks tv shows were innocent; it changed the way I saw television and only some years later LOST gave me that sense of awe, the true feeling that there are authors reaching the level of geniuses.
The only difference to your statement is that now I go with The Walking Dead :)
