Well...that was certainly better than I thought it was gonna be... I could see Carver's influence in this. The actors seem well-cast, and I actually gave a crap about what was going on at the end of the episode.
Did you watch the original UK version Wilson? I am watching the re-airing of the pilot right now and it seems to be the same as UK pilot with name changes and some subtle tweaks.
Overall I liked it and will check it out again next week to see where it goes. If it balances more with funny and emo instead of going all angst all the time, I could see it becoming regular viewing.
Nope, I'm watching as the people behind it intended: as an ign'annt Amuri-can. My mom has watched this show for a year or so, but I never got into it. When I heard one of Supernatural's writers would be working on it (and also to have a legitimate reason NOT to watch "The Cape") I tuned in. I expect nothing less than what a remake is: a remake...same thing, different audience.
I thought I would try The Cape again, but that experiment is over now. I expected a remake too for the most part, I was just wondering if you were comparing it to the original or on its own. Now I know...
The ghost girl was terrible and Sam Witwer played Aidan far too much like he played Doomsday on Smallville. I liked Mark Pellegrino and Sam Huntington but that's to be expected.
Not yet at the moment. I wasn't even really planning to watch it, but I needed to fill an hour. Pleasantly surprised so far. I may netflix the UK version at some point soon.
I think if Sally can cool it a little bit, and not be so... over the top (to put it lightly) I like her chances. I think the whole reason Witwer was cast is because of his part as Doomsday...I mean it's almost essentially the same issue... And Yes, Mark Pellegrino and Sam Huntington were my favorite parts of the pilot.
If you think THIS Sally is over the top do not watch the UK version. Each character is amped up and more over the top... more pathetic and whiney, more angst filled and awkward etc.
I thought this Sally was an improvement over the UK version honestly, far less annoying, distraught but not comically so. For me Aiden is an improvement on Mitchell too.. again more subtle than the UK version and far more vampire like in my eyes. George is basically the same but less "caffeinated"... again, to me a good thing. Mark's wig bothers me , but maybe in a few episodes I will get past it... I hope....
Overall I think it's a better casting than UK... Spot on to steal a phrase.
OMG I thought I was going crazy "Did Mark grow out his hair or something?"
But hey, if this is the more subtle version...wow. I actually thought it was exactly what a pilot needed to be. I really thought Witwer made a great vamp as well...But yeah, it was a lot like watching Sam's character on Smallville. (When the cop comes up to him, and he turns around drenched in guts...and then the cop gets it, and Sam's eyes go dark...anyway just pointing it out.)
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I thought the three main were vastly inferior to the originals, bringing much more 'syfy' acting but I did really like Mark Pellegrino. I thought it he was definitely best.
Hmm.. .finished the pilot now and comparing the two versions. This version is far less over the top. That lack of angst or nervous energy in the UK version makes the episode seem a bit slow... not terribly so. Just noticeably different.
The casting is perfect! George and Sally are basically playing the same roles as George and Annie in the UK version... just more subtly.
Aidan's mentor Bishop is far more cool than his UK counterpart Herrick, although Herrick had that comical crazy could snap any minute feeling. Bishop seems calm and collected in contrast.
So far in the one episode comparison I can feel the inner struggle to change far more viscerally in Aidan than the UK counterpart Mitchell. Only one episode in and I feel the danger, the power and the intensity of blood lust in Aidan, unlike in Mitchell.
Overall a more moody and almost sensual version of the more wry and playful UK version. A very good start.
The UK version is fun and I like it but for different reasons. From the looks of it, they will be following a very similar plotline... so you may want to wait until AFTER season 1 finishes here. I guess either way you will be watching similar events unfold so maybe it does not matter....
Sometimes a shift in the overall demeanor of a show can make all the difference and allow both to be quality storylines that share the same plot but be taken in different directions and fill a different niche in tv. :)
Me too, especially about The Cape. I'm kind of glad I haven't seen the original because then I can enjoy this version without comparing it to the other.
Agreed. I think some of that wry, witty and somewhat hyper or over the top British humor gets lost on American audiences (I'm in the US so I am not mocking). I like the tongue in cheek playfulness, but it is nice to have a tonal difference so it is not just the same show with different actors.
Not me - more pathetic, whiny and angst-filled are exactly what I want to avoid. I'm definitely avoiding the UK version then. I want more "Are you trying to scare us with Bon Jovi?" I chortled at that one.
Mark Pellegrino's hair bugged me to no end and made it hard for me to take his character seriously. It's actually the one thing I disliked most about the episode.
They tried, for gods know what reason, to make his hair look exactly like the actor who plays Herrick (similar mentor role) in the UK version... despite the fact that actor has thin hair and a receding hairline.
I thought it was good, but it kind of dragged a bit. I liked George(?), is he the werewolf? And the ghost was okay. Aidan bothered me, tho. I really really hate the whole vampire craze, and although he wasn't all twilight or anything, he was still a bit too brooding for me. I liked how wigged out the other two were, but he didn't seem to be taking the whole 'being human' attempt too seriously. I mean, he vamped out twice in one hour. I'll give it another whirl to check out part two -- I want to know what happens to the sister and if Sally can figure out how to help instead of just being a stay-at-home ghost. I loved Mark Pellagrino (even with the goofy hair) cuz he plays menacing with a sympathetic touch really well.
It's much the same as Shameless... carbon copy, minus slight changes.
Doesn't mean it's bad or anything... but for those that have already seen the originals, it can be a little predictable. I'm hoping both shows go off on their own plots pretty soon.
I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it, the changes to the vamp they announced was my biggest worry but he was actually the best character for me. The ghost was a bit whiny and unlikable but we haven't really seen the whole of her story yet, so I hope she improves. Annie has her down moments but her comic timing and humour are far more obvious than Sally's so far imo.
I missed Tovey, a lot! The new werewolf is ok but I don't think he could be as eccentric as George as he is played very much as a quintessential Brit that I don't think it's possible on a US version.
A few of the other characters grated on me too, still not made my mind up on Mark P. Again Herrick in the original version is such a strong character that I think it's going to take a while for his take on it to sit right with me. Like others I just couldn't help staring at his hair through most of his scenes, what have they done :S lol
Don't avoid the original-- I've watched both and while I was pleasantly surprised by the US remake, Being Human UK made me care more for the character when the episodes were through. Give it a shot.
I was pleasantly surprise. I've seen both of the British pilots and couldn't help but do a lot of comparisons and judging. (I had to watch it a second time.) I was a little surprised that this pilot was based more on the first pilot, which I actually liked, in some ways more than the second one.
For me most of the major cast were great. I liked Sam Witwer, who I wasn't too concerned about. I liked is intensity and I thought his scenes with Mark Pellegrino were great. (As an aside...I think this is the first time I have ever seen mark Pellegrino clean shaven and consequently it wasn't til the flashback that I was certain who it was.)
The actor I was least certain about was Sam Huntingon as Geor...er-- Josh (Does anyone know why they felt the need to change these characters names? Were they forced to?)
Meaghan Rath was the weak link for me. (I have always had a problem with actors doing crying scenes without crying.) She felt high school to me in a couple of scenes. I'll give it some time...maybe she'll get better as the character begins to deepen.
All in all, I liked this interpretation and plan on watching next weeks ep. I liked most of the choices they made in translating it for an American audience. Hopefully, it won't take me too long to stop comparing it to the original and enjoy it for its on merits. With this start I think this version will begin to distinguish itself and hopefully I'll continue to enjoy watching it.
It occurred to me - after a while - that Sally is a lot more like the Annie in the first pilot. The second version was a toned done version of the first one...and...wow you thought the second Annie was toned down? :-)
I liked this......i was dreading it to be honest, cause i'm already deep into the UK version, and something always seems to get lost in translation when AMERICA tries to remake UK shows....but......gotta say....they done a good job this time.
I think they really done their research this time.......cause the heart is still there, and the tone and feel of it is kept the way it should be kept.
AIDEN(MITCHELL) is better in this one.......Yes he's more american broody, but that works for me.....He's a better actor than the english version too....it will be interesting how he plays this in the future....will he start making the character his own, or continue more of the same.....only time will tell.
SALLY (ANNIE) is more feisty than UK annie.......but she doesn't have her warmth....i like her though...i think i'll grow to love her.
JOSH(GEORGE) is my fav.......he's nailed UK george perfectly.....he's got the neurotic vibe/ocd personality and when he said certain lines....i could picture george saying them....he plays him more subtle, but it works.....he's def a keeper, cause george is the strongest thing about the UK version, so i expected the same of this, and i'm very happy.
BISHOP(HERRICK) is the weakest for me....i love MARK P. and i'll watch him in anything, but in this he's not working for me so far.....i just don't buy his character, and i SERIOUSLY CAN'T STOP STARING AT HIS HAIR....it's so distracting, and doesn't suit him at all........HERRICK has this joker face, where you're not sure if he's your best friend, or worst enemy.......Bishop is playing him too calm, and i know mark can play that sort of character.....i've seen him do it....but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, FIX HIS HAIR, CAUSE SERIOUSLY.
it will be interesting to see where this goes, and how close the writers will stick to the original but.....yeah i'll be around for a while :))
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Well...that was certainly better than I thought it was gonna be...

Same here.
ReplyDeleteThe effects were a nice touch too.
I thought I would try The Cape again, but that experiment is over now. I expected a remake too for the most part, I was just wondering if you were comparing it to the original or on its own. Now I know...
ReplyDeleteBetter FX than the UK version, but that is to be expected. I was pleasantly surprised by them.

Oh wow... Hm...I'm going to have to watch the other pilot to see which I prefer now. lol

ReplyDeleteDon't avoid the original (why are we calling it the British version? It's the original).
ReplyDeleteIt is far better than the American version, in my opinion... though I do like the American version too.
Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately my LIKE button is broken. :c
ReplyDeleteThe original's actors were spot-on in terms of casting and acting... while the American version still has a lot of kinks to work out.
