POLL : Fringe vs Supernatual (Watch or Record)
11 Jan 2011
Cancelled Shows Polls SupernaturalAs you should all know by now, Fringe is moving to Fridays and will be against Supernatural.
So which will you watch and which will you record?
Sound off in the comments.

Wow, this poll is just tryin to instigate a war! LOL
ReplyDeleteAs a fan of both shows I have to admit that SPN has been much weaker this season while Fringe is only getting better. It deserves more attention.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I just read what Kevin Reilly said about Supernatural, the way he made fun of the show. What an idiot. Supernatural has been on air 3 years longer already - when Fringe has 6 years under its belt, then he can make fun of another genre show. Until then, beware of what you're saying, Mr. Reilly. Genre fans are a vindictive bunch.
ReplyDeleteFRINGE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSupernatural all the way !!!!
ReplyDeleteI think this is Fringe's best season to date, but definitely not Supernatural's. Just the difference of a show in its prime and a show past its prime... still very good, but nearing its end.
ReplyDeleteDef. gonna give my support to Fringe. The show needs more seasons and I'll certainly be watching and DVRing it. Don't watch SN, but I harbor no hatred for it...no intent to watch it, however.
ReplyDeleteI'm in a position where I can only record one show. I always record SPN AND watch it. I can't time shift here. My husband will record Fringe and we'll watch it when I'm home in a couple of months. Honestly, the writing on Fringe is just so inconsistent - I only still watch for John Noble and Josh Jackson. I'm hoping some day they will actually give Peter a decent storyline...
ReplyDeleteFRINGE É FODA
ReplyDeletesupernatural é uma merda
I watched every episode of Fringe season 1 and sporadically in season 2. I missed the first couple of episodes of season 3 Fringe and stopped watching it because I didn't want to jump into the middle of a major arc. I will watch season 3, but not until the summer when I can see it from the beginning. From what I have heard, I will be amazed.
ReplyDeleteStill, I have seen every episode of Supernatural, and have never missed a new episode on the night it aired except when it was delayed on my station. No show would ever cause me to miss a new episode of Supernatural at the time it originally airs. So, sorry Fringe but my primetime viewing belongs to Supernatural.
Fringe Fringe Fringe, it needs to continue its the best sci-fi/fantasy show on American TV right now for it to end before they writers are ready would be a great loss
ReplyDeleteWord. I do like Fringe but I buy it on DVD and marathon the whole season at once. But I've never missed an episode of Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he made fun of the show too much as much as he stated the fact that Supernatural, while having a VERY loyal fanbase, does not have nearly as many viewers as some of the others series Fringe has been against. Saying he doesn't know what night it is on... now that is a swipe, but pretty much the norm for one network commenting on another network. Not bad spirited at all... more playful in my eyes. I like both series, but if I had to choose one that was ready to end I would say Supernatural... assuming they have time to wrap things up this season. They deserve to end on their own terms after 5 or 6 good years!
ReplyDeleteI like Fringe, but I love Supernatural. I'm not from the US, so my opinion doesn't matter either way, but I would support Supernatural ALL THE WAY. It's my favorite, and it always will be my favorite.
ReplyDeleteSince I'm outside the US this is not such an issue for me *whispers* I download everything......
ReplyDeleteBUT given a choice I would watch AND record SPN, and maybe get a friend to record Fringe (as my shitty recorder will only record one thing at a time.
I like both of those shows but I download Supernatural episodes
ReplyDeleteI am a bad person for TV series ratings, I DVR everything and want (and watch again) at my leisure without having to sit thru commercials.
ReplyDeleteFringe all the way :D think it the better show this season, I watch supernatural but I definitely passed it peak...
ReplyDeleteI'd disagree about Supernatural. I thought season 5 was its weakest, but this season just keeps getting better. I loved RoboSam and his matter-of-fact way of looking at things. The Alpha and Purgatory storyline has been far more interesting than the FunPocalypse. Originally, I was concerned about Supernatural going beyond its planned 5-year arc but this season has blown fresh life into the characters and the storyline and I am eager to see where it will go after the hiatus.
ReplyDeleteFringe! My true TV love now LOST has left me.
ReplyDeleteNothing against Supernatural of course, I find it very enjoyable
This season has been so disappointing, especially for Dean fans and with no story for Dean in sight, I will watch Fringe and record SN. If I hear it's good I will watch it, otherwise, I won't bother.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch Fringe at all. So I have no conflict.
ReplyDeleteWatch and record Fringe. It doesn't repeat on regular TV.
ReplyDeleteIn my area, Supernatural is on more than once a week. I can always find it later.
I will point out that up until this season, SN had been up against CSI for five seasons and held its own.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the same boat here, not from the US so I download everything I watch which is why I didn't vote but if I did I'd probably go with 'Watch Fringe-Download SPN'
ReplyDeleteFringe is the new Buffy in our house, my sister loves it and my mum will actually watch it with us where as Supernatural fell out of favour around mid season 5. I'm now the only person I know who still watches it. SPN is still a OK show but I have to admit (for me) it has definitely seen better days.
Seriously? This was one issue I didn't really want to bring up here...it might piss off quite a few people...
ReplyDeleteAll of the Chuck fans said they were voting Fringe for People's Choice because Supernatural won the TV Guide cover. Seriously. Fringe is a good show. Supernatural is what I think is better.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural has been steadily getting better episode by episode. This is like season 1. The show is starting over. The five story line is done. Give them time. They are far from dead.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna miss RoboSam, but it will interesting when Sam begins to realize the things that happened. The comedy and drama is still as good. The monsters are interesting. Dean and Faeries was equal to some of the best comedy they've done.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural has come up against just as difficult programming as Fringe. Its first season had it placed in with a bunch of teenage shows. At least, that is what I call them. Fringe and Supernatural were on against each other on Thursdays. Supernatural carried most viewers of the two. What has happened this year is it's a new story line and those who claimed to be fans jumped the boat because it change. Supernatural has a worldwide viewing audience and they fight for the show. Believe me, I've seen it.Fringe doesn't have the conventions that bring them in all over the world. Supernatural does.
ReplyDeleteI like Fringe but if it's gonna be the same thing like last year, I'm interested but won't have the time to watch it because I have to watch, discuss, rewatch 'Supernatural'
ReplyDeleteYou are right.
ReplyDeleteCompared to CSI it held its own? Didn't Supernatural top out at around 4 million viewers at its peak? So CSI had.. what 4,5 or 6 times larger viewing audience. I think Fringe was topped out at around 10 million its first year but down steadily to 6ish now... still 2+ times larger viewership than Supernatural. I am not saying larger ratings equates to a better show (I likeboth about the same)... just stating that Fringe has been up against much tougher competition... like Kevin Reilly said.
ReplyDeleteFavorite Human: Ellen, Lisa
ReplyDeleteFavorite Demon: Crowley, Azazel
Favorite Angel: Michael
Favorite Other: ??
The problem with Fringe, is it is not the best sci-fi/fantasy. Supernatural has the best writing, the best directing, the most incredible acting, and the stories are marvelous. There is comedy, drama, action, horror, and family love and values. No other show on television offers all of that. If you watch Vampire Diaries which has become so popular, pay attention. It copies much from Supernatural..down to the age of the actors. The writers and directors were formerly with SPN
ReplyDeleteI'd disagree about you disagreeing about Supernatural. While I still think Supernatural is great this season (Caged Heat, Weekend At Bobby's, Family Matters, and You Can't Handle the Truth WOW) I still feel that season 5's first half was strong until midseason. The only problem I have with season 5 was the middling midseason...I find that turning a "prophecised, gigantic, destined battle that would decimate the world" into two angel brothers bitching at each other that was easily solved with two "insignificant" human brothers putting love before quibbling and fighting to be 100% Supernatural (while the execution obviously mirrors Buffy...which I can deal with...This show mirrors other tv shows more often than you'd think...) I find that so far season 5 is much like season 3 (episodes very strong, the pacing just way all over the place however) and season 6 is like season 2... Anyway, having said that, Fringe has been absolutely spectacular this season, and I am having qualms about staying with Supernatural (especially since I get FOX in HD, yet CW is in piss poor quality....that doesn't help anything...lol)
ReplyDeleteNo it hasn't. It's doing like season 1. Finding its feet for a new story line. It's getting steadily better. they signed J2 for two more seasons last year. Jim Beaver just twitted that he believes there will be a season 7. He's commenting on how tremendous some of the future episodes are going to be. Not even near its peak yet.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural has the most loyal and vocal fans.. I don't think that is in question in anyone's mind! Kevin Reilly does not care about world wide audiences... just USA since that is wehre his channel airs. As far as the head to ehad ratings went. Fringe beat Supernatural by like 6 million or more the two years they were head to head. Again... that does not mean Fringe is a better show. Just the ratings facts according to wiki and 2 other sites I just checked .
ReplyDeleteYeah, that pissed me off too. But also because he doesn't obviously know enough about the competition to make any strong decisions for Fringe in scheduling...He seems a bit distant from his responsibilities...
ReplyDeleteaw come on spn fans! it was a fair game and we lost it, that's just something we need to accept...isnt this kinda immature? i mean seriously, u've got to admit it: this is the worst season of spn..there's now way we could've pulled this off with the sixth season...but dont get me wrong i love the show! still that doesnt mean i couldnt be critical, does it?
ReplyDeleteTotally agree, THIS season is better by the episode for the most part. I do not think they NEED to end, again, not my point. My poitn was that Fringe is at a point where they could if they needed to wrap things up more easily than Fringe. .. which is at the point Supernatural was 2 years ago. They are in the middle of a multi-season arc.
ReplyDelete...Would you mind elaborating on the writing issues you have with Fringe?
ReplyDeleteI didn't miss an episode of Supernatural until season 6... lol
ReplyDeleteI suppose I will stick with SPN first, then follow up with DVR'd Fringe.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural only. But honestly I'm going to stay out of the discussion. This could get very, very ugly. Well, I might discuss if someone makes a really, really stupid comment...
ReplyDeleteI agree, thought Peter had huge and well-done storylines in both Season One and Season Two. This year has been mostly about Olivia/Fauxlivia, but is set up now to have more Peter as he related to the doomsday device and both worlds.
ReplyDeleteDean technically has never had the major story...
ReplyDeleteYou have to ask a certain Fox executive ;D
ReplyDeleteI agree, used to always watch supernatural but this is the I found myself missing episode or watch week after they were air..were as Fringe I have to new episode the minute it out
ReplyDeleteSo, where's your season 2 review? ;)
ReplyDeleteThat may be true. But Supernatural has held its own. The CW doesn't promote Supernatural like Fox does with Fringe. Its a rarity if you so much as see a Supernatural promo. So all in all Supernatural has held its own. Yes, it may not have as many viewers as Fringe or CSI but it does hold its own when it comes to the Loyalty of its fandom.
ReplyDeleteFunny, it's usually been the Samgirls complaining this season. Nice change of pace...
ReplyDeleteYes, but fringe is also on a far superior network.
ReplyDeleteDang, I thought I wasn't going to be in any discussions...
Just fyi, I don't believe FOX has been that active in promoting Fringe until just very recently, and maybe in the first season...
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I think he was clueless as to how vocal and defensive the SPN fans are and was just trying to poke light-hearted fun at the competition while defending his own show. I could be completely wrong and he is an asshat, but it did not come off that way in her article to me. He in all liklihood does not watch Supernatural and maybe doesn't even watch Fringe.... so it would not shock me at all if he was just clueless! LOL
ReplyDeleteyeah that's true...that's why i was kinda disappointed this poll was made in the first place
ReplyDeletelol wrong poll...
ReplyDeleteAgain, no argument about which network gets more viewers or is in more households... or which network promotes their show better. Fringe has a huge advantage on both counts. But those are both irrelevant points (to his statement... not to quality of show) since he was just talking about ratings as I saw it.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think we should keep these shows apart and hope they do not meet in the best show poll.
ReplyDeleteAgreed that this is going to get ugly. Both sides are very passionate and Fringe has a lot of fans here. More and more it seems. The only worse poll to do right now would be a Dean vs. Sam poll.
ReplyDeleteSPN only. I watch a 'live' online stream of Supernatural at 4am on Saturday morning (I live in Europe), then I download it the next day and watch it again. And again.
ReplyDeleteAh, I see. No harm done.
ReplyDeleteOne point: Yes I have noticed greatly that TVD copies TONS of stuff from SPN. HOWEVER, to say that Fringe doesn't have all of the above criteria you have named is to say that you apparently don't know what you're talking about... Fringe most definitely has amazing writing, directing, even better production values than SPN, and some of the most nuanced, mind-breaking acting I've ever seen. There's a twisted and broken family aspect, there's a LOT of horror and drama and action... And Walter alone is enough to break out the comedy. I'm sorry, even with SPN being my favorite show, you completely discrediting Fringe just renders your post almost useless for credibility.
ReplyDeleteWhat game are you talking about?
ReplyDeleteNo worries, Ali. I have recorded your choices for the poll this week. Thanks for nominating.
ReplyDeleteIt is possible to critique a show without saying it is bad....I know you are aware of that... some fans (not saying any one show in particular) just take every critique as an attack and lash out. Have to agree on the production value and acting on Fringe. I think Frigne is a MUCH more nuanced show than Supernatural.... not as straight forward.... not better- just different. But to say either show sucks is just silly and as you stated... useless.
ReplyDeletewait... there is a live online stream and I didn't know about it? you wanna make my day and share a link? ;)
ReplyDeleteHe basically said that he didn't see Supernatural as competition and if you're a FOX executive talking about a FOX show that airs in the same time slot than that's not light-hearted but pathetic.
ReplyDeleteWhile promotion DEOS affect ratings... it does not mean the raw ratings numbers are moot. Facts are facts... numbers are just numbers. It only means one show is watched more... not why.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you Pigeon, and Teija, and Dahne.......
ReplyDeleteanyway, we've much more important issues to discuss....like should the Impala be added to the 'untouchable' list along with Sam, Dean, Bobby and Cas?
They both have great aspects. Peter is my favorite character, but John Noble has a way of stealing scenes he is in. Awesome acting! Fringe definitely has a bigger budget on a better network and thus can do bigger effects. It doesn't have to rely on the "less seen" philosophy that SPN often does. However, I would say, in the first 2 seasons at least, Fringe is more gore than horror. In my opinion, SPN takes that category. I would also say that although the relationship between Peter and Walter is dramatic and has its twists, they have nothing on the Winchesters. They are still the most engrossing family on TV to me. :-P
ReplyDeleteI personally would say Fringe is the best Sci-Fi show on TV....... and Supernatural is the best Fantasy/ Horror on network TV. I honestly do not see tham as direct competitors since the science fiction in Fringe is completely different than the paranormal mythos in Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteAnd were Fringe's ratings good for a FOX show? because 'Supernatural's ratings were good enough for an early renewal on the CW.
ReplyDeleteI love both shows, but Fringe has been better this season than Supernatural (not to say its bad, its still really great!). But at this point Fringe needs the viewers more than Supernatural so I'll be watching Fringe live and recording Supernatural for later.
ReplyDeleteYou are comparing apples and potatoes, sorry. Fox = netWORK. The CW = netLET. Different standards. And Judy didn't say "compared to", she said that while airing against CSI, it held its own - and it did, actually much better than Fringe. SPN has always been among the best shows on the CW, despite the heavy competition. Fringe is much lower on Fox's food chain. I'm not bashing the show, I like Fringe well enough, but you always need to compare shows only to other shows airing on the same network. Also, as Nikita has proven this year, it's not easy to replace SPN in said slot, now there's a show not holding its own against CSI.
ReplyDeletelol I wasn't just talking about Peter and Walter. I was talking about Peter, Walter, Olivia, Gene, Astrid, and Broyles. I could also argue that SPN is more gore than horror as well...(especially this season...Sheesh, Sera has reallllllllyyyy got a hold of some good props, no?)
ReplyDeleteSPN of course wins in the horror department: it's a much more vital part of SPN than Fringe...
It sure should. And I say lets ditch the voting, cause if there were polls asking whether Sam, Dean, Bobby or Cas should be in the polls, there would still be tons of people who would've voted they should. But Dahne as the poll maker made the decision and everyone respects it. Can't she just go and make the decision about the Impala too?
ReplyDeleteNot to mention the first poll of the week is going up in about 5 minutes. Favorite Angel sounds like a much nicer poll to be participating in. Too bad all the angels are douches in Supernatural! I'm not sure which group is more evil - the angels or the demons.
ReplyDeleteThat is a double edged sword. It is easier to get renewed on the CW than any other "major" network on TV. IF a CW show gets a loyal fanbase it tends to stick around, Fox and the other big 3 networks do not care much about fan base... just raw numbers. Fox wants to compete with the big 3 every night and every time-slot. IT just does not care about CW very much and his comments showed that. That aside, Compared to the big Fox shows like Idol Fringe's numbers were questionable.... and that's why it has not been renewed yet.
ReplyDeleteAhem.......just a reminder folks, the purpose of this poll is not to debate which is the better show.....and let's face it we could argue ourselves to a stand-still over this.....
ReplyDeleteI feel for the ones who love both shows......
Which to watch first?
I'm so glad I'm not in that position - SPN will always be first for me....
You could always do a "Supernatural VS Fringe VS Lost VS X Files VS Vampire Diaries VS Battlestar Galactica VS Chuck VS Smallville VS Buffy The Vampire Slayer" poll. ;)
ReplyDeleteOkay. I have read a lot of the comments on here and ended up just stoping b/c I just don't understand. What I do not understand is the battles people will start over shows. Now this poll is just fine. It is not asking which show is the best or which will you choose. It is just asking a simple question: What shows do you watch? And since Fringe and SPN have been placed on the same day it is no doubt to come up. SpoilerTV asks this question almost every night: *Date* What shows will you be watching. It really is no different.
ReplyDeleteAnd as far as Kevin Reilly goes. I LOVE Fringe and have been watching it since the first episode. Basically b/c of Joshua Jackson but I really like the storylines of the show. Now given that, I record both my shows and DVR and watch them later. Why, I freakin hate commercials. I usually watch a pre-recorded show for about the first 30 mins and then I got to SPN first and watch it and then go to Fringe.
But for someone to bash another show just for ratings is dumb. How can you insult fans that way. And for those of you who thinks it all in fun....it is NOT!!! Could you imagine if Eric Kripke or Sara Gamble had made a crack about another show.
Supernatural has never put itself on any kind of pedestal. It is the fans that have done that. Eric Kripke, Jensen, Jared, Jim and Misha all know that SPN is not in compettition with other shows. They come in every day and work their asses off for the fans. They know how much the fans care about the them and appreciate the work that they do. And that appreciation is always given back in thank you videos or on the bloopers in the box sets. Please remember Supernatural has won a handful of meaningless awards and has been snubbed by everyone else in the business and again the ONLY reason why after 5 great seasons they made it onto the cover of TV Guide is b/c of the fans. Oh and let me say something to all of those Chuck fans.....Really??? You are that childish that you would vote against a show just b/c you lost the TV Guide cover.
With all of the new sucky shows airing on TV right now....we all need to band behind the good ones so that they can all stay on the air espcially b/c these are the ones we hear about getting canceled. I am done gripping and I am sorry if I offended anyone. That was not my intent, I just needed to get this out.
Definitely the angels.....
ReplyDeleteOh, Wilson what ARE you doing? Bad Wilson :P
ReplyDeleteLOl. Love the term nerlet! No argument like I have said 3 or 4 times no in this thread alone. Fox is a bigger network than CW. I agree to a large part, but the networks do not ONLY look at a show in regards to the other shows on its network. If a series is beating its competition on other networks or failing.... they take notice. IF a show is winning the night or time slot, that show is held in high regard even if it loses compared to other shows on the network on different nights. In fact I think the time slot battle is the FIRST thing networks look at not how it fares compared to other series on different nights in different time slots. Unless they want to move it to kill it off or strengthen a different night.
ReplyDeleteI see it this way as well.
ReplyDeletePoint well taken. I do like how it shows that the people you work with can become your family. True also - SPN has been getting gorier these days. Maybe they got a budget kick for the props. Still not holding my breath for the dragon though? I foresee much snickering in that CGI future.
ReplyDeleteImagine a network executive being a mindless tool.... ok that was too easy. Much harder to imagine one that is not....
ReplyDeleteLMAO
ReplyDeletelol Simple argument flaw, Jillyanne...there's always something worse that can happen than what you're expecting... :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with this completely, only the problem with equating Kripke and Gamble with Reilly is a little off-balance: it would be more like Dawn Ostroff said something stupid about Fringe lol
ReplyDeleteI realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllyyyyyyy hope we don't see much of the dragon...like the wendigo and the siren...the short glimpses worked wonders ;)
ReplyDeleteHonestly? I don't watch TV anymore because I hate commercials and the restrictive time frame. I order all my shows on iTunes (they still get my money, lol) With that being said, I've stopped watching Fringe because I started to get bored with it. It is still a good show IMO, but I just have no desire to watch it anymore.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural on the other hand...
Thansk for the correction :) In my world CW does not promote SPN we do so I am always looking at Kripke and Gamble as the heads :) Sorry about that :)
ReplyDeleteNo because if I did, I would be contradicting the votes of over 250 people. I'm sorry that this upsets you but I did not imagine that when we voted for the other category that people were going to take it as everything included. Next time I will include the Impala in the no nomination list but for right now we are going to do as the majority voted. My suggestion is that if the Impala being included upsets people too much they can either ignore the poll or ignore the Impala in the poll. You always have the right to vote for something else or not vote. I have tried to be fair in all the polls but it is impossible to please all people.
ReplyDeleteI don't either and I like both shows. The move to Friday is not going to make people stop watching one show or the other... both fanbases are way too into their shows for that to EVER happen. I seriously doubt being up against each other will affect either's ratings very much. The move to Friday is what may affect Fringe.
ReplyDeleteYeah, what Reilly said was uncalled for and, IMHO, not at all funny. Honestly, at this moment, I think that SPN has a much better chance for a renewal than Fringe (because of CW's lower standards). On the other hand, maybe Fox will pull another Dollhouse and pick it up despite bad ratings?
ReplyDeleteAnd it seems you've learned your lesson. lol ;)
ReplyDeleteSeason 5 has nothing on season 3 in the area of great episodes. The episode from season 5 I chose as my favourite - The End - I'd still place behind about 5 episodes from season 3. And it had only 16 of them.
ReplyDeleteSeason 5 was way weaker than season 6 IMO too.
and then, don't be too harsh on Supernatural - I really see no point in comparing two shows at such different stages - Supernatural was way different in its third season than it is now and who knows where Fringe will be in it's sixth (if it gets a sixth). Give 'em a chance, they still may surprise you ;)
And I just find that sadistically enjoyable, lol ;)
ReplyDeleteWhich is funny cause Dollhouse had like 2 million viewers when it was renewed...the difference? Fox got money from DVD sales/syndication...and it was much cheaper than Fringe...FOX gets generally nothing outside of money for commercials during Fringe episodes...
ReplyDeleteI forget or maybe never knew Dollhouse's ratings... I know it underperformed in their eyes, but it was up around 6 million a night? I thought it would have been lower. I wonder what Fox exec's cut-off line is... 6 million? Five million?
ReplyDeleteLOL!!!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I think lots of Supernatural fans would love Fringe, there's no need for a war about it. I will always watch Fringe live and get Supernatural later, though. Nothing will change that now. Although when Supernatural ends, the fans should watch Fringe live because it's a very wonderful show worthy of fans, not just viewers
ReplyDeleteHe's a network head. They believe any press is good press so his comments should just be brushed off as someone who really doesn't understand the fandom of any other show except the ones he's promoting. Besides, I don't think being smart or having class is a prerequisite for the job. As bad a network head as I think Dawn Ostroff has been, at least she had the brains not to trip over her own tongue. And if he thinks anyone is going to believe he doesn't know what the competition is for the shows on his network, either he's underestimating said competition or like Wilson said, a bit distant...
ReplyDeleteUm, wasn't this called the Best Show competition this summer? As I recall, that one did get pretty ugly. Let's just say that I have a better appreciation of internet nuance now. In daily life, I can use the terms best and favorite interchangeably for the most part. Now on the internet.....
ReplyDeletemmmm and what if I record both shows? XD
ReplyDeleteboth networks would be stupid to let either show go. Sci-Fi has always had a little nitch with the fans. It is not like Greys or CSI, but it does have a huge underground following. Kind of like Star Trek. I mean how many Trekkes do you meet in real life. My husband is a HUGE Star Wars fan, but it is a little under the radar again given the movies are done, but he loves to discuss Lucas' new Clone Wars that are on the Cartoon Network. So they should understand and research the true fan base these shows have and not go by just TV ratings :)
ReplyDeleteYou make an extremely valid point there. I'm in agreement. I'd rather watch SPN than Fringe, but Fringe is quite good.
ReplyDeleteI KNOW!!! YCHTT!!! All those bodies hung up like cattle carcasses?? Nice!!! I was impressed with that episode.
ReplyDeleteugh...I hope they don't CGI that thing.
ReplyDeleteDragons never turn out good on TV shows in my eyes... CGI or not... One of the better dragons is on Merlin and that one is still just passable.
ReplyDeleteI don't really watch Fringe ATM, though I did get the first season for Christmas so when I get a life again (I wish), I'll hopefully give it a try. Anyway, it seriously narrows down the poll for me, as obviously I will just watch Supernatural. Other than that, I am staying well out of this one. I hate watching people argue on the internet (or full stop), particularly about something as trivial as this, and I want no part of it.
ReplyDeleteThe less seen of the dragon the better! Unless a series goes full on camp mode like Dr. Who and Torchwood.... overly large or complicated monsters tend to be best unseen and just heard.
ReplyDeleteDahne, I think we've been very insensitive toward you in all this.......you put a lot of time and effort into making sure the hellatus is as bearable as possible for us and we just keep on complaining......
ReplyDeletewe are bad, bad fans and we love you ......sorry :(
The End, Changing Channels, Dark Side of the Moon, Point of No Return, Two Minutes to Midnight, Abandon All Hope, My Bloody Valentine, are all some of my personal favorites of all of SPN. You can disagree but don't try to argue opinions over the strengths of episode vs. episode like that...It's just subjective and frustrating.
ReplyDeleteExecutives at networks rarely if ever look at a shows fans or the shows themselves, they are just pieces to move around on their schedule in an attempt to improve this night or that time slot. Sad really. He is just defending his choice to move Fringe to Fridays... poorly stated or not, incorrect in his thinking or not too.
ReplyDeleteThe numbers aren't "questionable" it's more likely than almost all of the FOX shows to be canceled (except for Lie to Me and Human Target...HT is DONE FOR, but LTM and Fringe have a little fight left in them...) Moving Fringe to Friday is like a last chance: if they can get good enough ratings on Friday (this is a pretty big if, here, folks) it will be renewed more than likely, but compared to every show barring HT and LTM, Fringe is a ratings failure in season 3... But it's still on the brink of picking itself back up. That's why FOX didn't just cancel it to make way for their (MANY MANY) new shows next season, they want to try to build up a Friday night to contend with the other networks because FOX fails on Friday horribly, even to CW...
ReplyDeleteI blame Gamble for me being a total gorehound now... I was impressed to say the least...
ReplyDeleteLie to me is done... they were just told they did not get a back 9 order today.
ReplyDeleteThe only difference was that it was more drawn out and not all of these shows went head to head... If all of them were in the same poll, the world might explode...
ReplyDeleteThat means nothing. They could do 13-episode summer seasons like they used to do...
ReplyDeleteIt certainly means it won't be on the Fall schedule anymore, however. lol
Well, at least many servers would be done for. And likely the internet. And possibly cause a blackout the world over. Yeah - this is the next diabolical plan for a supervillain. :-P
ReplyDeleteI think it MIGHT mean more than that considering it just won a People's Choice Award and they STILL did not give it a back 9 for the Fall. Sounds ominous to me, but maybe I am off on this one.
ReplyDeleteThat's called dividing by zero. ;)
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love Fringe, I'm gonna be watching it online.
ReplyDeletesorry, of course I know none of this is your fault and you can pretty much do nothing about some things going on here. I'll just follow your advice and ignore Impala in the polls, putting her in that special place in my personal clasification :)
ReplyDeleteIt's surprising how often I agree with you...
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking about great Sci-Fi shows that were canceled....
ReplyDeleteDark Angel (although I am not sure about this one b/c we would not have Jensen on SPN if it wasn't..oh so torn)
Moonlight
Kyle XY (even after a year long petition to bring it back....fell on deaf ears.)
Please name some of your favorites that were canceled :)
:-) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAccepting applications for people to write the last two week's polls. Any takers? :-P
That's why my boyfriend refuses to watch Doctor Who with me. Remember the season 3 Christmas special? He left even before the giant spider appeared.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely hope they will follow the Hell Hounds/Wendigo approach to the Dragon.
I download the two of them!! in argentina i can´t watch them "en vivo" without waiting 1 month :( so i always download them. this friday thing changes nothing to me=D
ReplyDeletePD: sorry for my horrible english =D
sorry, I must have misunderstood your "qualms" then. And overlooked the first sentence... :P
ReplyDeleteWell put. They are completely different tonally as well.
ReplyDeleteNão tem coragem de dizer isso em inglês, é?
ReplyDeleteI thinkiti has served its real purpose - to get people to the site and to provoke a lot of comments and debate. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy first reaction to Dr. Who 2005 and Torchwood was..."Ugh, those monsters are like muppets!", but then I realized I said the same thing about Farscape (where the were indeed TRUE Muppets by Jim Henson) and I watched that for 4 or 5 years! I do not watch ANY BBC show for the special effects... how could ANYONE? Seriously! The other positvies make up for the FX negative... in ffact in my eyes, they overcome the lack of budget anf FX negative and turn it into a positive by not even trying to be realistic. Soon as one accepts that they are often brilliant shows!
ReplyDeleteI still say that if Dark Angel had stopped focusing on the super-whiny Max and had more Alec and Joshua the show would have gone on longer.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you there :) Alec (ahhh Jensen, sorry back on track) and Joshua were very good characters. Would have loved to seen more of their story. I think Max would have been okay if they did not keep going back with the Logan angle and the "Ooooh, I can't be with him I will make him sick." They just drug it out too long and it was a really dumb storyline. I liked her before she started the whole I can't be with you but I love you drama for sooo long.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen Farscape, but I agree with what you are saying! I love how campy the effects are, its adds genuine character to the show!
ReplyDeleteI'll probably just DVR both and watch later. Why wasn't that an option?
ReplyDeleteKyle XY was awesome for what it was, John Doe too. In the fantasy/ horror side of sci-fi, BBC's Survivors and BBC's Ultraviolet, Dresden Files, and Legend of the Seeker.
ReplyDeleteIn the true Sci-Fi genre, I liked Farscape and it goes without saying (but I feel the need to sa it LOL) Firefly!
Look, Fringe fans have just as much love for Mr. O'Reilly as SPN fans do... No need to fight.
ReplyDeleteFarscape was awesome. You should give it a chance. They answered my number one pet peeve about many alien shows. Why do all aliens speak the same language? Answer - they don't. Everyone has a translator chip implanted.
ReplyDelete/agrees
ReplyDeleteTwo words: HELL no...:P
ReplyDeleteI've attempted Supernatural, and maybe it was because I watched that and then the X-Files pilot, but I never could get into it. I like the supernatural and paranormal and all but... it seemed to religious, which is strange since it's a demonic based show (from what I've heard). Aliens are much more up my alley.
ReplyDeleteSo it's always been Fringe for me. That ridiculous universe-hopping, FBI investigating, papaya-exploding, Observers watching, pseudo-science show that I'm slightly obsessed with.
I'm going to be taping fringe and watching supernatural. However, I am doing this because I personally enjoy Fringe more. I've recorded fringe all season and this way I keep that continuity. Plus if I'm not going to be home I have to pick one or the other, and Fringe is my favorite serialized TV show now that lost is gone. (FYI: Modern Family is my favorite show on TV, but its a half an hour sitcom so I count it differently) I like Supernatural and will probably watch that online as soon as I can if I am not going to be home Friday nights.
ReplyDeleteAmusing that he doesn't see Supernatural as competition, considering we've kicked Fringe's ass in multiple polls and contests. Oh gee, and which TV show was it that made it to the cover of TV Guide? Oh, wasn't it Supernatural? Yeah, that's what I thought. Asshole.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter whats up against Supernatural!!! They are and always will be number one in my book!! Fringe is good but Supernatural's boys are the BEST!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think Fringe offers drama. I think it offers action. Often, it offers horror. Values are constantly a part of the show. The values of family are constantly challenged in the relationship between Walter and Peter. I have a respect for SPN because the people involved with it worked with the X-Files. That being said, to say that Fringe doesn't have all the stuff you describe is incorrect in my opinion. No insult intended, just being honest.
ReplyDeleteFRINGE is the only tv show i watch.....and i download and rewatch and rewatch and rewatch.
ReplyDeleteAll of my favorites from Season 5 were in the second half except for Changing Channels... Those include some of your favorites... My Bloody Valentine, Dark Side of the Moon, Point of No Return, Two Minutes to Midnight, but for me Swan Song was the best. I loved the fact that the epic battle of two powerful forces could be aborted by two humans.
ReplyDeleteI record all my shows but since I'm in Canada I dont think our numbers matter anyway :P voted just Supernatural :D
ReplyDeleteI would say he did in Season 4... In Season 4 he had the major story and the POV lead....
ReplyDeleteYou obviously didn't read the Like a Virgin Synopsis when Hermit was complaining that Supernatural is "the story of Sam".
ReplyDeleteI love this season of Supernatural a heck of a lot more than Seasons 1, 4 and maybe 5... Different strokes for different folks.
ReplyDeleteI love sci-fi, but Fringe just cannot hold my interest. Sorry Fringe peeps - but I'm sticking with the boys~ Team Winchester!!!
ReplyDeleteOoooh, I loved John Doe too... I totally forgot about that show because it was released when I didn't have time for TV. I found it online after it was already canceled... same thing with Firefly which I think could have been the best series ever; if it was given a chance.
ReplyDeleteMy most recent regret is losing Kyle XY. I go back and rewatch that over and over. It didn't even have a wrap up movie *sigh*.
I watched Season 1 of Fringe because I just KNEW I would love it... it turned out to be not at all what I expected. I really liked Peter and Walter, but wasn't really interested in anything else. I did finish Season 1 and will probably end up watching the other seasons some day, but to me there is no comparison between Supernatural and Fringe. For me it is Supernatural every time.
ReplyDeleteTry season one when there were no angels. It was more of a straight-up monster hunt with great brotherly interaction. It's not until season 4 that you get the angel and demon wars, which I liked less myself.
ReplyDeleteI think we are in the minority, but I agree completely! Season 3 is by far my favorite, then season 2...4 and 5 lost me to a large degree, but this year has gotten better as it went on. I won't judge it as a season just yet since so much is left, but so far it is much better to me than 4 and 5.
ReplyDeleteKyle XY was a very cute show and a very entertaining and had a message... rare combination these days. Perfect combination of family drama, mystery, paranormal, sci-fi and comedy. I was never going to win any awards, but it is still one of my favorite "comfort food" TV series to watch! The only other one that has a similar feeling for me is Veronica Mars. Totally different type of series, but it leave me feeling the same way after I watch an episode.
ReplyDeleteOh... wanted to add The 4400 to my sci-fi missed list. By the end of Season Four I was ready for it to end because it lost much of the quality of the first 2.5 seasons, but I enjoyed it until the end and was mad it ended how it did.
ReplyDeletei watch both, but supernatural came first so gotta give it to my winchester brothers
ReplyDeleteUm, other? I can record 2 shows at once. Though I guess it just depends on which particular episode each week I'm looking forward to that will determine which I'll watch first. Most likely Supernatural most weeks, which was what I did when they were on at the same time last year.
ReplyDeleteDon't.Make.Me.Choose.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural will stay on tv no matter what happens to its ratings; the same thing cannot be said with Fringe. If you love both shows, there is really only one reasonable choice.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural all the way! Never seen Fringe and don't really care to.
ReplyDeleteOk, I can see how this is playing out...Supernatural won the first ever front cover on the tv magazine, also won E! favourtie show of 2010 against Castle by 0.8%...so what is it now: Lets try and put it into the background as quickly as possible....bring it on. The more you try to hide Supernatural the more the fans will come out fighting...oh and not dirty either. Ok there are some fans who are abusive, but thats goes for every fandom.
ReplyDeleteWinning some online polls doesn't mean anything in the end, ratings are all that matters for networks.

ReplyDeleteGood point Aimee, why do we even give these guys air time, they just love to stir things up and set us against each other, WHY?
ReplyDeleteI loved, loved, loved Season 3... Any season that has Mystery Spot, Jus in Bello, and Bad Day at Black Rock just rules... and I am almost embarrassed to mention it because fans give it such a good time... but I also reeeaaallly love Red Sky at Morning... We had dirty Gertie, James Bond Dean, and the best ghost elimination in my opinion. When those two ghosts clashed and splashed, I was just blown away. Sorry, so many people hate that episode (including Kripke), but I thought it was a bunch of fun :-)
ReplyDeleteYou know, I always thought Veronica Mars was a standard CW type show... (Chick Flick / High School melodrama), but I was already hooked on Supernatural, I read the reviews and I gave it a chance... It really wasn't bad at all. I was really disappointed that I never watched it until it was canceled. Veronica was a real tough cookie. There aren't many female characters on TV that I really get into, but she was great!
ReplyDeleteThis really wants to do a war or something. PCA already caused some tension and now Fringe moving to Friday? Are they deliberately trying to fight Supernatural?
ReplyDeleteUse TVUplayer, or go to tvpc.com. But I gotta warn you, both have crapped out on me at least 20 times during SPN (that means if you want to keep your sanity I suggest you wait and download the episodes):D
ReplyDeleteIt's SPN, no doubt about it. Sorry, Fringe. I totally love you - always have, always will - but you'll have to be relegated to the DVR. You just don't have that "sacred hour" status for me that SPN has (and has had for 6 years).
ReplyDeleteUmmm Dark? Are you trying to start a fan war on here?!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand these 'wars'. I mean, it's like arguing about favorite food or something. Pointless.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Fox trying to fight supernatural. I would be surprised if supernatural did not get renewed by CW for another series, it good show. For Fox it all about solving the Friday night problem for poor viewing numbers. They have tried new shows in the time slot but they did not produce the magic numbers they wanted, so the next thing to move a established show with loyal fan base i.e. Fringe as it not retained great percentage of viewer from the lead in when it was showing this last year on Thursday night. Think the swap at supernatural was to get more publicity on Fringe move to Fridays
ReplyDeleteactually the FBI thing is one of the reasons I'm still undecided whether to start watching Fringe. Why does it always have to be FBI? which is also why Supernatural is so unique, with the hunters' world kind of outlawed, self-organized, often with issues against the police. You see, the hunters of SPN pretend to be FBI and those fake IDs of all kinds I just adore ;)
ReplyDeletealthough Fringe does seem a wonderful show and I'm likely going to try it anyway, maybe I'll be surprised. Perhaps any Fringe fan could give me some good reasons not to be afraid of the FBI part of it?
Maybe not,but they weren't just some backwater online polls either. TV Guide was pretty huge last time I checked. And those people who bring up the ratings were the ones who voted, thanks. Anyhow, I'm not going to sit and argue with you over my opinion or how I feel about things, thank you.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. If you begin to watch SPN in season 5 it might seem too angel, demon, Apocalypse and religion heavy. It was for me too. Altough I still loved season 4 when it entered the angel storyline, so unexpected at that point, and somehow the angels, the seals and the threat of Apocalypse was just as enjoyable as any urban legend or monster movie.
ReplyDeleteBut I definitely recommend watching from the very beginning, exploring one mystery at a time, "the road" from its start to finish. It's all so beautifully connected through all five seasons you could be surprised how forgotten things from season 1 or 2 can pop up and turn out important in season 4 or 5.
Fringe first aired after American Idol for a lead-in, the cushiest spot in all of TV, then moved to Thursdays at 9 where Supernatural already was facing the same 'tough' competition and had been doing so for several years. Supernatural is one of the CW's BEST performing dramas, while Fringe is one of FOX's WORST performing dramas. Sure, FOX gets overall higher ratings than the CW. Except when Supernatural beat The Good Guys on Fridays at 9. Reilly knew Supernatural was there.
ReplyDeleteI hate that Fringe is moving. I ALWAYS watch Supernatural when it's on plus I record it which leaves me missing Fringe. I guess I'll have to watch it online like I did last season. I haven't been enjoying Fringe as much this year though, I'm just not feeling this season.
ReplyDeleteActually, as much as I love Supernatural and think it should always be considered a competition (it's just too amazing), it's not exactly the way you say. Online fandom consists of many outside-US viewers (me included), who watch it online or download and have nothing to do with the rankings. Thus, I vote but I do not bring up the rankings. Just as simple as it is.
ReplyDeleteFor now Supernatural only but I might try out Fringe in the near future.
ReplyDeleteFringe. Wanna know why? Same thing I said on tumblr:
ReplyDeleteFringe is a great sci-fi show, innovates most of our opinions and it blows our minds easily. Yes, it has a great cast, but it also has a very interesting plot. I never regreted watching it, it was the series that brought my interest to the sci-fi genre.
It has awesome characters, whose mistakes only proof their humanity, and that fight to save the people, each one with their misterious past.
And there’s just way much more.
I don't even watch "Fringe" regularly, and yet I'll be giving my audience share to that show over "Supernatural" given the disappointing direction the sixth season is going in. I've been a fan since day one, and I can't do it anymore. Thanks for making the decision no decision at all, Sera.
ReplyDeleteI watched Supernatural for the first few seasons and thought it was good. Then it seemed to be going in a direction with monsters and demons behind every door. I ended up switching channels part way through the last episode I was watching. Fringe is far better because it looks at the personal lives of the characters. And at the same time keeps the plot exciting and unpredictable. With a few laughs thrown in,it's an excellent show
ReplyDeleteI voted watch Fringe live, record Supernatural. (I will in fact be recording *both* shows to view again and again.) It's going to be difficult because I breathlessly wait for each new SPN episode but I've really gotten into Fringe this season...
ReplyDeleteI'd actually prefer to watch SPN live and then follow it with the Fringe recording but honestly, Fringe needs my live support right now more than Supernatural does. Have a look at the Renew/Cancel Index (http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/the-renew-cancel-index) and their prediction for SPN renewal: http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2010/11/23/cw-supernatural-fans-have-nothing-to-worry-about/73107
Dude. Welcome to my world :P
ReplyDeletelol I will consider taking care of my sanity, but thanks anyway!
ReplyDeleteDifferent things mean more to different people or different fans. To TV executives, you're right, ratings rule. Did they beat a competitor in a time slot, hold the lead in ratings from the previous show or set up the next show's ratings well. That's about it really. Bonus if the fans love the show and care enough to vote for a TVGuide poll or website poll, but as long as the amount of fans that tune into their show is more than tune in to their competitor's show, they are happy.
ReplyDeletePersonally to me, fan polls and shows like People's Choice are fun, but don't mean much. To others fan polls and award shows where fans vote are of prime importance... equivalent of say the Oscars or Emmy's to me. I will never recall who won a poll a few years ago, but I will remember an Oscar or Emmy award for a movie or series I like.
Actors get a kick out of winning polls, it's good for their careers on some level, but they get raises and contract extensions after winning Oscars and Emmy Awards.
The thing is say Supernatural got 5000 votes for one of these polls (these numbers are just an example). Its not like 5000 people voted for it, more than likely 1000 fans voting 5 times each or 5000 fans of which a 1/3 are outside of the US and don't boost ratings. So whilst I get the polls mean a lot to the fans they don't necessarily mean ratings will be higher because fans (from all shows I shall add) block vote.
ReplyDeleteThe poll seems pretty close which tells me the fans are going to continue the show they enjoy the most. For me I absolutely love Supernatural and nothing would pull me away from that. I have enjoyed S6 so far. The twist with Sam's soul was great and now when they return in less than 2 weeks (thank goodness) I think the fans are in for a wild ride. I personally did watch Fringe when it first came on but then Supernatural grabbed my interest and then I did not watch Fringe again. The comment made by the executive at Fox is just that a comment. If he is trying to stir up controversy or think he is funny I say whatever. I am sure he knows that Supernatural is on Fridays if not he maybe should look for a new job seeing he is in the TV business. For me it Supernatural and nothing else. Supernatural rocks!!!
ReplyDeletelol
ReplyDeletegrr
ReplyDeleteThis poll only allows you to vote once. Right Dark? Right? o.O
ReplyDeletelol, at least I am only allowed to vote one time. Occasionally I'll vote again to test it but it keeps telling me that it has already counted my vote.
