Grey's Anatomy - Episode 7.12 - Start Me Up - Review

Grey's Anatomy continued with another great episode last night "Start Me Up". The episode focused on the residents looking after new first year medical students as the race for Chief Resident began.

Christina was back to her usual, no-emotion determined self which was great. Although it has seemed to go from one extreme to the other a bit with Christina but we have the old her back and that is what matters.

The medical students provided the usual humour that always appears around this storyline. We had the attractive young female that of course Alex ended up with, the clumsy one who was partnered with Christina, the nosey unprofessional one with Meredith and the underdog with Avery. I enjoyed how they were paired and it fitted really well with the storylines that were currently going on. At the end of the day the medical students were asked to evaluate their mentor to which the interns were surprised as nearly all of them (apart from Alex) received negative feedback.

The Chief discovered last night that Teddy had married the Chief and Bailey's patient in order to provide him with medical insurance to which he was less than impressed. It was nice to see more of Teddy. She's been pushed to the back a bit this season so seeing her struggle with the reality and consequences of her actions was refreshing. It appears that Teddy is starting to fall in love with Henry. I hope we don't get another Denny/Izzy situation.

Callie also revealed a huge piece of news last night, she is pregnant with Mark's baby, (sorry Calzona fans!) Throughout the episode, Arizona had been talking to Mark to try and find out how to reach out to Callie, once she finally seemed to manage to achieve this, Callie threw that at her. I was so gutted. As a shipper of Calzona, I'm a bit annoyed at this story. I want to see them back together. At the same time, the story provides some great drama to the show and it will be exciting to see how Arizona responds to this. Will she still be as keen to reunite with Callie? Or will she now be doing everything in her power to avoid her? I am also interested to see Lexie's reaction to the news about Callie and Mark.

Overall, the episode was another brilliant one of season 7 which opened up a lot of brilliant directions for the show for the remainder of the season. There are so many open storylines now all of which provide suspense and drama. Who will be the next Chief Resident? What will happen with Teddy and Henry, will there be major consequences for Teddy? Will Bailey finally settle down with Eli? When will Meredith finally get pregnant? Will Lexie and Arizona forgive Callie and Mark? I could go on. After a shaky start to season 7, the show has certainly found its place again. I am very excited for the rest of the season.

  1. Awesome review, I agree with mostly everything, especially the Cristina rushing to her old back, but what the heck, I missed her!

I'm really enjoying Teddy's storyline with Henry. Kim Raver is awesome and she deserves more spotlight. I'm glad Owen didn't get too much screentime because he's the most annoying character (maybe after Kepner lol)

The pregnancy storyline kinda bothered me a bit, though. Just doesn't sound fair to Meredith. And I'm a die hard Mark/Lexie fan, and I was hoping LEXIE would be the mother of the baby he wants to badly. I was pretty sure Meredith wouldn't be the first one to get pregnant, and I was really expecting Lexie to be it, because they're sisters, Mark and Derek are BFFs and that would only add more drama...

Anyways, nice to watch the new med students. It gives the show some fresh air.

  2. ITA with you Jordana on Teddy/Kim - I love her and I'm so glad that she got a little more screentime, her sl with Henry looks promising and was awesome in this week's episode, kind of hilarious at the beginning and then she was put in the very uncomfortable position...and then Henry's speech, brilliant IMO.

It was a very good episode, more comedic this time, as opposed to last week's Disarm, but still amazing. All was linked in a very good way and I enjoyed everything, patient's cases also, especially personal one fro Callie, don't you think?

And about Christina, I noticed one thing, which impressed me...she gave those advice to her student and it was awesome, it sounded so personal to me again, like she's giving him advice based on what she's been through lately, that he'll survive after all but that he has to have some rules and stick to them, it was an awesome teaching moment after all for me. :D

And the students were hilarious...and April was jealous?! Was it just me? :P
All the students turned out to be different from what we've assumed at the beginning, maybe except Alex's student, haha...but Mer's student defended herself in a good way IMO, Christina's was good too, as I concluded in the previous paragraph, and Jackson's also, well, he wasn't as useless and he thought, trying to put his opportunities before his students, haha.

And great review, as last week's, THANKS! :)

Can't wait for the rest of the season....and episode felt a little bit like the first seasons with students and a lot of humour, seriously.

  5. I don't really like the Callie/Arizona/Mark thing going on. Not because I like Callie and Arizona as a couple, though I do, but because it just seemed so...well, lame. I can't help it, Callie saying "I'm pregnant. With Mark's baby." Was just extremely Brazilian-soap-ish to me. And I say this because I've seen plenty Brazilian soaps, and not that many Mexican ones. I imagine they are similar, though. Anywho, I like Mark and Callie being buddies, and I'd hate to see a change in their relationship like this, especially because I’d like for Mark and Lexie to not have this kind of drama. BUT, all for the excitement of the show, I guess! The writers might pull this off really well, or I’ll just sit through a storyline I don’t like too much. Either way, now that Christina’s back and doing well, the season is going really well, methinks! Loving Teddy’s plotline, Henry is awesome and funny.

On a different note, I wish we saw more of Mark and -Derek- being friends. :c Really, they’ve got plenty of history and it would be cool to have a pair of best buddies being all…well, cool. What I mean is just…everything’s all about who likes who and who has sex with who, I’d love to see more friend interaction. Like Mer and Christina!

    TL;DR:
Skeptical about Callie’s pregnancy, loving Teddy’s plotline, wanna see more Derek and Mark (and Mer and Christina) being BFFs.
