Desperate Housewives and How I met Your Mother.Desperate Housewives could use a new showrunner. ANd the concept behind How I met Your Mother has long ago jumped the shark. They should HIMYM and launch a Barney spinoff.Hell NPH Is best thing about the show.
I think the phrase "Jump The Shark" has, ugh... jumped the shark. I cringe whenever I hear the phrase and the entire concept is nothing but an excuse for people to complain about anything that they don't like.
The fact is that there are very few instances in television where you can point to one specific moment that defines the immanent decline of a series. It's a rare occurrence and the phrase is rarely ever applied correctly.
I think Idol jumped it when Taylor the gre haired idiot won, I think Weeds jumped it this year,Desperate Housewives jumped it years ago and I'm not sure One Tree Hill ever hit the water to begin with! Disagree about House completely. I think firing the original team was the best thing to happen on the show, but I do think it jumped a very egotistical shark with a bad fin when House was institutionalized.Lie to Me jumped it last year some time when they started making Tim Roth over do his accent and made teh show less about his science and more about the characters. I also disagree about HIMYM and think Jennifer Morrison is soooo much better as Zoey than she was on House as Cameron... but not nearly as good as she was on Chase as the Schizo killer mom.
Of these shows I still watch HIMYM and TBBT and I think that they still are good. The ones that I no longer watch is House, Bones and Weeds. I stopped watching House and Bones because they started to only revolve around the relationship of House/Cuddy and Booth/Brennan, and a wanted neither of them to become a couple, or watch the dance on the road to a relationsship. Especially since these shows did not start out being so extremely focused on relationships makes me more disappointed with them. I stopped watching Weeds because the mother started to disgust me with her poor decisions and bad personality...
House, the firing of the Ducklings and Huddy made me stop watching. I love bones but they are taking way to long with the relationship and it is starting to get old. Glee rocks and they have always used big guest stars.
I agree what they wrote about The Mentalist. It became less clever and more irritating for a few episodes in the second season and the finale was kinda below average, to be honest. Season 3 started out on a pretty much similar note; I was really pissed when Patrick started being suspicious of the CBI director and started being a dick to him for no apparent reason. But I am glad to say that the show has done its best to get back to what it was like in the first season. The later episodes of season 3 have been good, especially Red Moon, which was really brilliant.
I quit watching Desperate Housewives the minute Dana delany was gone. The show has turned Into the Eva Lorgoria Comedy hour and the Felicia Huffman contuing Lifetime movie.
damn straight. NPH is the one holding the show together which should have fallen apart long ago. Season 5 really missed the point and it feels like the show is going nowhere in particular. But even with all that, I think its one of the best comedy shows still on air.
Some TV viewers are so harsh and impatient that it's a wonder they find anything to their liking. TV shows have good moments and bad moments. Nothing is ever good all the time. There is rarely, ever a true jump the shark moment in any show. It's a grossly overused phrase.
I agree the guest star episodes have been some of the ebst of the series. The show is not about any one or two singers, it is about the club as a whole. As proven by Ryan Murphy's announcement today that some of them will graduate in a year and there will be more new faces moving in and out in the next two seasons. Poor shippers.....
Could not agree more with both One Tree Hill and housewives... both of their time jumps just didn't work... OTH used theirs a bit better in my opinion, but they've had nothing going on really the last 2 seasons... time to pull the plug. Housewives on the other hand still has some life in it.
To me, One Tree Hill has jumped the shark years ago.
Season 1 was great - sure it was all teenage drama, but it wasn't completely over the top, there were plausible and entertaining storylines and it was emotional and sometimes touching.
I bought the first season on DVD, loved it and bought seasons 2 and 3 directly after. Boy, what a mistake that was. I don't know if they changed the writers after Season 1, but ever since Season 2 it's been a complete soap opera. I forced myself to watch both seasons, since I had bought them and I thought they were awful. Over-the-top drama, no one was ever happy and if they were, something would pop up out of thin air. The storylines were ridiculous and ever more crazy. I can't believe I used to like this show.
Lol what's your problem with Desperate Housewives? Going back to its roots is the best thing that ever could have happened in its already 7th season. DH has still a lot of life in it, and I think this season is fantastic so far, specially with the addition of Vanessa Williams and bringing back the legendary enemies Paul Young and FELICIA TILLMAN. They're doing a great job. It was already known after S3 that the Paul/Felicia storyline isn't over yet, we knew they'd come back sooner or later. And it truly IS DH again. DH is dftly the best show ever, IN MY OPINION. And please don't judge me for my opinion. Plus the ratings are WAY better than lots of other shows, specially on ABC.
But I can't agree more with OTH. Though I used to love this show, it's totally run its course after S6.
only thing I can comment on here is House, and I find Cassandra's reasoning very weak considering she doesn't watch the show anymore and hasn't since season 5. Season 6 was really strong, and although this season hasn't been as good as usual so far, it's still very strong TV.
I don't think some of these people know what "jump the shark" means. Take, HIMYM. The TITLE of the episode is HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. How is this lost on people? The show centers around the central character meeting one person, therefore that's where it will end. If you want to argue that it's lost its flair, then that's a different story, but until Barney jumps over 10 women while riding a bicycle, I'd say there has been no jumping of sharks.
Same goes for all the other shows.
(Also, NOW is when the people on OTH look sad? Were those people watching when Peyton was on? Yeesh!)
Some great comments. I have to agree with Bruce_F that most of the shows on this list, maybe getting stale, most haven't "jumped the shark," which means there is one point the characters skewed off into a bizarre direction that the universe or the characters shouldn't have gone.
That being said, I loved bones until last season with the coma angle. This season, I actually canceled it on my DVR. I just can't do it. I couldn't care less about any of them anymore. While the show hasn't jumped the shark, it has started sucking...in my opinion
I disagree about House and Glee. Like.. House isn't a soap D= and Glee has his little nice moments. I agree about Bones. I don't know when it started going this way, but yeah I dont like the show now as much as I used to do before season 5/6
Well i agree with all of those, but when it comes to "The Big Bang Theory" i still watch because its smart funny but yeah Leonard and penny are unbearable :/ but that may be because Leonard is the most annoying character ever.
True. It sounds more that people are dissatisfied with where the plot is going in general and not a specific event. In fact I would say half the people writing in suffer from series fatigue and the other half don't like the changes the show runners have made to avoid series fatigue. You can't win either way.
I don't care about any of these shows (except HIMYM) but you made me laugh with your descriptions. If I believed in the jumping the shark concept I would say that One Tree Hill got devoured the second they hired CMM and never had a chance to jump the shark. Glee always bored me with the exception of the musical numbers, Brittany, and Sue. I would happy if the shark feasted on all of them and then broke out in a cheesy production number complete with costumes and backup sharks. Oh, and the same sharks could happily devour all reality shows including American Idol, making life far grander.
until, Season 4 HOUSE was BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN, amazing cases & House's dirty sense of humor WAS SO AWESOME that I never thought about watching anything beside it for the rest of my life .. but now is so lifeless & very stupid esp. w/ this Cuddy/House thing ... YUK!
Another show is THE MENTALIST, it used to be really great & Jane used to be very charming until the mid of season 2 his character switch to be a complete jerk & pain in the a** .. I miss Jane of Season1 so much but he's not the same anymore.. sorry writers u messed him up x(
also, I totally agree about Bones, GLEE, Castle AND Life Unexpected (even I'm a die-hard fan of the later) but Eric/Lux relationship was a HUGE disappointment for me this season (esp. after I saw done on PLL which also made me sick no matter how cute they were IT IS STILL WRONG)
I have to agree about LUX. I loved this show until around episode 5 (the camping episode was 5 right?) and I have to say that is a legitimate Jump-the-shark moment... It's where LUX went from a pseudo retro-WB vibe to CW-Gossip Girl whorish annoying, idiotic vibe...like... instantly...with Lux in the lake with the teacher, Baze in the bus with his boss ( A BUS!? REALLY? Aren't you people effing adults!?) and Cate with Ryan in the tent...it was so cheesy and ridiculous...To see Lux brazenly give a nod at her friend telling her "I'm not giving up on going out with my teacher, even though it's statutory rape" I deleted all episodes of LUX from my DVR and just stopped.
Thank you soooo much for saying this. People confuse a lack of quality with jumping the shark. Very few shows jump the shark, they just gradually decrease in quality. For example, glee is not as good as last year, but it has not jumped the shark. A jump the shark moment is when a show clearly shows its out of ideas and is desperate to do something to keep the ratings up. Therefore, only American Idol has jumped the shark. Whether you want to point to when Ellen became a judge, or to when they changed all the judges but Randy, its jumped the shark. That's it. That's the only show on tv these days (that I get in Canada) that has jumped the shark. People, please stop confusing a lack of quality with jumping the shark.
So....I wrote this REALLY long post about how fast Life Unexpected jumped the shark this year (the camping episode where two adults screw on a school bus while Lux is spooning with a teacher in the lake, and her mom is screwing her stepdad in the tent ALL AT THE SAME TIME AT A SCHOOL EVENT...!!!) but it didn't show up. So, I declare out of a tired cliche' word use that "Disqus" has jumped the shark!
I don't know, but I think House hasn't really jumped the shark. t isn't as great as it used to be, that's for sure, but it isn't awful either. It's unfair to compare it to DH, a show that totally lost itself more or less 3 seasons ago and just isn't over because, despite the lack of decent stories, the audience is still pretty good.
Same thing with Glee.
But who cares? All I wanna do is watch the ever so cool TGW. Season two is AMAZING so far.
For me, when I really started doubting House wasn't when he fired his ducklings but when Foreman was hired back. No one really ever liked Foreman (then and now). He's always been the most boring character in the show and it was a huge mistake to leave out two interesting ones and replace them with Foreman.
No, thank you. I've been an opponent of the phrase for a while now. Its meaning has morphed into an empty catch phrase that caps off someone's rant about a storyline they don't like or a character that they want gone from a TV show. "Jump The Shark" is an entire franchise based on the rampant misuse of the term.
I have no idea how crappy plots/characters/actors/shows can be "jumping the shark." The author that source material really needs to spend some time learning what phrases really mean.
I wouldn't really say that's jumping the shark. The show from the beginning has been about very strange, uncomfortabel situations, and how all these messed up relationships run parallel to each other.
Well with house i loved it a first but as soon as he went to rehab and than got out it when down hill from there so i just gave up and dont watch it anymore
I have to agree about HIMYM. Zoey has been a dud from the get-go. And there's been so many hints that rule her out as the "mother" there's no reason to invest in her anyway. Although I do find her husband "the captain" entertaining. Maybe he'll throw her off his boat and end this storyline, lol.
well i dont think BN has " jumped the shark" they all way's have plenty of new ideas i always learn something new every time i watch it . With SVU i think it was a good show i still like it but this season so far has been a little frustrating and it's starting to boar me with my mum was raped oh and mine to omg are we like sisters "pathetic". HIMYM i find that good and nothing wrong with that but i guess they could be running out of ideas to tell about the story because there are only so much you can tell about a show. BBT well that's just funny all together so i dont know why they bothered even putting it up there when it is one of the most watched shows. Now with bones that used to be one of my top shows but now it is to predictaball and they dont do much new. Castle well it's still new so far so i like it so far so good. and house well lets just say that something that was good till like the 2 last seasons.... well that's all i have to say you may not like it but it's what i think
I wouldn't say it has on Fringe...yet. But yeah, pretty much everything else I can think of. That is the best thing about Lost being over. No more of that Skate, Jate, Suliet, blah blah blah crap that makes me want to puke.
You take the entire cast of Glee, CSI (all of them), American Idol, Desperate Housewives, and Grey's Anatomy and they each take turns trying to literally jump a shark. Or maybe ten sharks, I don't know...however many it takes to make it interesting. Whoever is left (uneaten) by the end is the winner. The prize? They get their shows moved to the crappy time slot.
Kind of agree what they wrote about "The Mentalist". Maybe I wouldn't say it has jumped the shark yet (I don't like that phrase anyway) but I'm not impressed by season 3 so far. The only episode I liked was "Red Hot" and maybe "Ball of Fire". The rest was pretty "meh", especially the last one "red Moon".
Right? Thank you! I stuck around and I'm glad I did. LUX will never be just another CW show. And the Baze/Emma, Cate/Ryan, Lux/Erik(sp?) scene was beautifully edited, I thought.
i totally agree about bones. booth is being obnoxious and completely out of character. at this point, i don't think that booth/brennan can legitimately be together. how could they come back from this? it's getting hard to watch.
I agree about Bones and somewhat about The Big Bang Theory (because those are the only shows I watch/watched out of these selected). I stopped watching Bones halfway through season 5. It was sad to do because I was such a big fan, but it makes me cringe to just watch it these days. They were headed somewhere good in season 4 and then it just got stuck in an awkward place. It looks like, to me, that the writers don't plan on changing that anytime soon either. As for The Big Bang Theory... I'm not too sure how I feel about it this season yet.
I agree about Glee, House, One Tree Hill, Desperate Housewives, Weeds, Law & Order, American Idol, Bones... LMFAO that's all the ones I watch(ed). Add Grey's Anatomy to the list and this would've been perfection IMO
I hope Booth runs off with his new girlfriend and they disappear into the sunset. Honestly, it's not so much that I'm upset about them RUINING such a great show, it's more that Booth and Brennan's relationship is like mother and son...or brother and sister...it would be a little awful for me if they got together now.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I agree about #house and #bones. Dropped both because of the ridiculous 'shipping stuff. Boring.

ReplyDeleteYou take the entire cast of Glee, CSI (all of them), American Idol, Desperate Housewives, and Grey's Anatomy and they each take turns trying to literally jump a shark. Or maybe ten sharks, I don't know...however many it takes to make it interesting. Whoever is left (uneaten) by the end is the winner. The prize? They get their shows moved to the crappy time slot.
Yeah the only thing about lost that it was over like i swear it was never going to end and what and he just lay's there the end!
ReplyDeleteKind of agree what they wrote about "The Mentalist".
ReplyDeleteRight? Thank you! I stuck around and I'm glad I did. LUX will never be just another CW show. And the Baze/Emma, Cate/Ryan, Lux/Erik(sp?) scene was beautifully edited, I thought.
ReplyDeletei totally agree about bones. booth is being obnoxious and completely out of character. at this point, i don't think that booth/brennan can legitimately be together. how could they come back from this? it's getting hard to watch.
ReplyDeleteI agree about Bones and somewhat about The Big Bang Theory (because those are the only shows I watch/watched out of these selected).
ReplyDeleteAs for The Big Bang Theory... I'm not too sure how I feel about it this season yet.
Yeah and with bones you can just about all ways tell like half way through the show who killed who they dont even make it hard anymore
ReplyDeleteWell, we haven't yet seen the whole Peter/Olivia thing played out yet. It's going alright so far though...
ReplyDeleteI agree about Glee, House, One Tree Hill, Desperate Housewives, Weeds, Law & Order, American Idol, Bones... LMFAO that's all the ones I watch(ed). Add Grey's Anatomy to the list and this would've been perfection IMO
ReplyDeleteI hope Booth runs off with his new girlfriend and they disappear into the sunset. Honestly, it's not so much that I'm upset about them RUINING such a great show, it's more that Booth and Brennan's relationship is like mother and son...or brother and sister...it would be a little awful for me if they got together now.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with almost anything, except Glee.
